Krists Nielands wins the final stage
The race: Here's the organizer's telling of the final stage.
Israel Cycling Academy takes second stage victory while Synergy Baku Cycling Project wins home race for first time
At the end of the fifth and final stage of the 2017 Tour d'Azerbaidjan, Krists Neilands (Israel Cycling Academy) managed to hold off a charging peloton to take an impressive solo victory in Baku. In the fight for the overall there was no change as race leader Kirill Pozdnyakov (Synergy Baku Cycling Project) finished in the peloton to take a home GC victory for his team.
With four hard stages in their legs, the peloton took off in a sunny Baku for the final stage of the Tour d'Azerbaidjan. After 89km of racing the parcours entered the Baku Circuit for five laps of 14km, including a 3rd category climb at the iconic Flame Towers.
Right from the start a group took off for today's breakaway: a group of six riders including Kohei Uchima (Nippo - Vini Fantini), Remy Di Grégorio (Delko Marseille Provence Ktm), Ryu Suzuki (Bridgestone Anchor Cycling Team), Nils Friedl (Hrinkow Advarics Cycleang), Lubos Malovec (Dukla Banska Bystrica) and Emils Liepins (Rietumu Banka - Riga). The six managed to gain a maximum advantage of 3'15", but behind the race was controlled very well by the Synergy Baku Cycling Project.
The gap to the leaders dropped gradually as the riders entered the Baku Circuit, at which point the escape split into two groups. Going into the final lap and a half the last two riders out front were caught by the peloton and that was the moment Krists Neilands (Israel Cycling Academy) took off in pursuit of stage victory. With an impressive solo effort, he took the stage win 21" in front of the peloton which was left sprinting for second place behind. Ahmet Orken (Torku Sekerspor) was the fastest of those from the bunch, just in front of Edwin Avila (Team Illuminate) who secured the green Points jersey in this Tour d'Azerbaidjan.
Kirill Pozdnyakov (Synergy Baku Cycling Project) defended his blue GC jersey and the red KOM jersey with success, and as an added extra he received the jersey for Best Azeri rider. The magenta Young jersey was successfully held by John Anderson Rodriguez Salazar (Delko Marseille Provence KTM). The best team at this year's Tour d'Azerbaidjan is Kolss Cycling Team who finished with four riders in the top ten.

Saturday, May 6: Stage 4, Gabala – Pirgulu, 164 km
Edwin Avila wins stage four
The race: Here's the organizer's telling of the day's racing.
Edwin Avila (Team Illuminate) has won stage 4 of the Tour d'Azerbaidjan after an impressive breakaway effort, followed by a strong finishing sprint. Besides the stage victory, Avila also assumes the lead in the green Points' jersey competition ahead of tomorrow's final stage. In the GC battle, the queen stage was always under control for the Synergy Baku Cycling Project team, who successfully defended the blue leader's jersey of Kirill Pozdnyakov.
After yesterday's chaotic final which saw six crashes in total, the peloton of 115 riders took off in Gabala for the queen stage of the race from Gabala to Pirgulu. With a high pace and some climbs in the beginning of the race, the results of the crashes were visible with abandons in the first hour of the race.
After some attacks of smaller groups that never gained more then a few seconds on the peloton, with 65km to race a breakaway was formed by three riders: Jan Andrej Cully (Dukla Banska Bystrica), Manabu Ishibashi (Bridgestone Anchor) and initiator Simon Pellaud (Team Iluminate). The three worked well together, building a maximum gap of 4'45". In the chase behind the peloton broke in two and several riders were dropped as the pace increased when climbing the final climbs of the stage.
The final of the stage would decide the stage win and most probably the overall general classification, as riders tackled two final climbs - a 1st category and HC category to finish. The three leaders were eventually caught at the top of the first classified climb of the day by a group of chasers, with the first KOM points of the stage going to Ishibashi. After the descent, going into the final 30km, the four chasers - Ildar Arslanov (Gazprom-RusVelo), Alex Turrin (Wilier Triestina - Selle Italia), John Anderson Rodriguez Salazar (Delko Marseille Provence KTM) and Edwin Avila (Team Illuminate) - dropped the three leaders and built a lead of 1'35" on the reduced peloton.
Going into the final 20km and at the start of the final climb the four leaders had an advantage of 2'20" on GC leader Pozdnyakov. On the climb proper, the peloton started to splinter, and the four leaders were able to hold their gap to a select chase group that included Pozdnyakov. In the final sprint it was Avila who gave Team Illuminate a deserved win after the team's coordinated efforts and attacking display on the day.

Friday, May 5: Stage 3, Gabala - Gabala, 177 km
Matej Mugerli wins stage 3
The race: Here's the organizer's race report.
Gabala, 05.05.2017 - Matej Mugerli (Amplatz - BMC) has won the third stage of the Tour d'Azerbaidjan after a chaotic final with crashes in the peloton. The ex-Synergy Baku rider was the fastest from a small group that managed to avoid any of the several crashes in the final kilometers of the stage. Points jersey wearer Mihkel Räim (Israel Cycling Academy) finished second, while KOM leader Vitaliy Buts (Kolss Cycling Team) came third. Kirill Pozdnyakov (Synergy Baku Cycling Project) remains in the blue leader's jersey, with a 39 seconds advantage.
In rainy and cloudy weather conditions the 115-strong peloton rolled out from Gabala for the 177.2km third stage, that would bring them from Gabala to Sheki and then back to Gabala for an uphill finish. After several attacks right from the start, a group of five riders formed the break that would stay clear for much of the stage.
Daniel Diaz (Delko Marseille Provence KTM), Christoph Schweizer (Team Sauerland NRW P/b Henley & Partners), Jan Andrej Cully (Dukla Banska), Eriks Tom Gavars (Rietumu Banka - Riga) and Ryota Nishizono (Bridgestone Anchor) built a maximum advantage of 5' over the peloton. In the heavy weather conditions, the peloton looked quite relaxed, but going into the final 50km they picked up the chase and the gap started to drop.
Looking to profit from his day out front, Schweitzer took maximum points at the two intermediate sprints from the breakaway. With 20km to go the leaders still had an advantage of 55" over the chasing peloton, but were down to four - including added firepower from Janos Pelikan (Amplatz - BMC) who bridged across the gap.
Diaz, Schweizer, Nishizono and Pelikan were working well together, maintaining their 55" advantage heading into the finale, but the peloton had its sights set on a sprint finish and in the final 10km the race came back together. On the run in to the finish the chaos unfolded, seeing several crashes affect the race and a final group of just 32 riders sprinted for the stage win, from which Mugerli came through as the strongest rider on the day.

Thursday, May 4: Stage 2, Baku – Ismayilli, 187 km
Kirill Pozdnyakov gets an impressive solo win
The race: Here's the organizer's race report.
Ismayilli, 04.05.2017 - After an impressive solo effort in the final 15km of today's stage, Kirill Pozdnyakov (Synergy Baku Cycling Project) did the double in winning both the stage and taking the race lead of the Tour d'Azerbaidjan. Second and third place went to riders from a chasing group of seven: Oleksandr Polivoda (Kolss Cycling Team) and Dennis Van Winden (Israel Cycling Academy) respectively. There was no change in the KOM classification, with Vitaliy Buts (Kolss Cycling Team) scoring enough points to keep hold of the red jersey, while Pozdnyakov also took the lead in the points classification, with second place Mihkel Räim (Israel Cycling Academy) wearing green tomorrow.
The second stage would bring the international peloton from Baku to Ismayilli, covering a parcours with three climbs and two intermediate sprints that promised to be an interesting race like past years. After a fast start which saw attack after attack, a large group of 27 riders managed to break clear of the peloton over the first climb. Several crashes in the front group saw their number reduced to 20 riders at the front of the race.
After the first mountain and towards the first intermediate sprint the peloton almost caught the breakaway, the advantage dropping to just 35". However, the peloton slowed and the group now down to 18 riders, extended their advantage to over 2'. On the second climb of the day the group split in two, resulting in two small lead groups and one large chase group behind.
The man in the mountain's jersey, Vitaliy Buts (Kolss Cycling Team), was in the first group and managed to take maximum points at the first two KOMs, comforting his lead in the red jersey competition. On the final climb the leaders came back together, but again multiple attacks followed.
After the final KOM, which saw Pozdnyakov take maximum points, and the following decent, a group of 12 riders split off the front. They built a maximum advantage of 4'30", before Pozdnyakov escaped from the breakaway with less than 20km to race.
In the final 15km Pozdnyakov built his advantage from 10" to 40", taking a fine solo finish in Ismayilli ahead of a chase group of seven riders.

Wednesday, May 3: Stage 1, Baku - Sumgayit, 150 km
Mihkel Raim (dark blue jersey, center) gets the win
The race: Here's the organizer's telling of the day's racing.
Mihkel Räim (Israel Cycling Academy) has won the opening stage bunch sprint at the Tour d’Azerbaidjan, crossing the finish line in Sumgayit just ahead of Emils Liepins (Rietumu Banka - Riga) and Pier Paolo De Negri (Nippo - Vini Fantini). The win also sees Räim take hold of the first leader’s jersey of the race.
It was a tough opening day for the riders at the Tour d'Azerbaidjan with a fierce fight for the day's breakaway seeing nothing stick. That meant the first and only KOM points of the day were raced for by the peloton, with Vitaliy Buts (Kolss Cycling Team) taking maximum points. His reward, the first red Mountain jersey of the race.
Crosswinds also made for a hard and fast race, and shortly after entering Sumgayit, where the riders took on five town centre laps, a five-man escape group formed taking a maximum lead of 2'40". With the sprinters' teams keen to make the most of today's opportunity, the break was eventually reeled back in, and going into the final lap the peloton caught the last remaining rider out front and the teams got ready for the final sprint.
There was still time for several late attacks as riders tried to jump the sprinters, but no one was able to break free from the bunch. In the final sprint Nippo - Vini Fantini took control, but it was the Estonian sprinter Mikel Räim (Israel Cycling Academy) who came through strongest on the day after an explosive finish.
After three years of competing at the Tour d'Azerbaidjan, it is the first stage win and the first GC-jersey for Mihkel Räim.
