Weather at the start/finish city of Levico Terme PM at 2:35 PM, local time: 15C (59F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the wind from the southwest at 13 km/hr (8 mph). No rain is forecast.

The stage: The closing stage of the 2024 Tour of the Alps is held entirely in Trentino and in Valsugana, with start and finish in Levico Terme. Despite the relatively short distance: 118.6 kilometers, the continuous ups and downs might still be decisive for the race’s final outcome.

The route kicks off with an undulating loop of about 20 kilometers, which crosses the finish line twice in Levico Terme. After that, the peloton tackles a second loop of about 25 kilometers that showcases completely different features as it winds through the Valle dei Mocheni.

The final part of the 2024 #TotA is a long and typical climb toward Palù del Fersina, which will be ridden twice, with a long downhill in the middle. Following the second descent, a flat segment takes the pack to the race’s last climb, the Valico di Tenna, followed by a false flat that ends with about five kilometers to go. The majority of these final five kilometers is downhill, yet the last kilometer in Levico Terme climbs once more to offer a grand finale worthy of the 2024 Tour of the Alps.

The race: Early in the stage Baptiste Huyet (TDT Unibet) abandoned.

Early in the stage Lidl-Trek works to protect Juan Pedro Lopez's GC lead.

Here's is the report from GC winner Juan Pedro Lopez's Team Lidl-Trek:

On Stage 3, Juanpe attacked through the icy rain to take a beautiful solo win 38 seconds ahead of his main GC rivals. A solid margin, but by no means comfortable with two more days in the mountains left to race. The next day, proudly wearing the green jersey as race leader, Juanpe stepped up and doggedly defended his lead. With so many riders dangerously close in the overall standings, he had no choice but to follow every move he could, right to the end of the stage.

The final stage, a loop around Levico Terme, presented two more mountains standing in the way of Juanpe and his first stage-race victory. Fortunately, it wasn’t just Juanpe who stepped up to the challenge, but also his teammates who played a vital role in controlling the peloton throughout the day. When the time came for Juanpe to take matters into his own hands, he did, looking as composed and experienced as his nickname ‘El Patrón’ suggests.

As the group of climbers fought for the stage win, Juanpe crossed the line a few meters behind punching the air with elation to celebrate the first overall race victory of his career.

The winner’s words:
“I feel super happy because I worked really hard in Tenerife with the team, and being with all my teammates there made me really motivated. Last year I had some hard months after the crash, but now I’m really good, especially in the downhill. I really surprised myself, it was super nice for me.

“Today the team did a good job one by one, the young ones – Nils and Liam – were great from the start, and then Fabio and Dario were really important for me, keeping me calm and giving me confidence. Then, if I said Amanuel and Carlos did their job 100%, that wouldn’t be enough praise. They did a f***ing nice job. This victory is for the whole team.

“The green jersey is extra special because it is the color of Real Betis, my team.”

Stage 4 map & profile

Simon Carr has left everyone behind.

Story of the Giro d'Italia volume 2

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Giro d'Italia, A Year-by-Year History of the Tour of Italy, Vol 2: 1971 - 2011 is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Borgo Valsugana at 2:20 PM, local time: 10C (50F), raining, with the wind from the east at 14 km/hr 6 mph. The rain is forecast to end at 3:30 PM.

The stage: Stage 4 will again start from Leifers/Laives in Südtirol/Alto Adige and end in Borgo Valsugana, in Trentino, following 141.3 kilometers and almost 4000 meters of elevation gain. Without a doubt, these digits make ( the queen stage of the 2024 Tour of the Alps.

After a quick warm up in the first kilometers, the riders will face the ascent toward St. Lugan Pass/Passo San Lugano. Once the racers enter the Val di Cembra, a new climb toward Brusago will prepare the peloton for an even more challenging 4 kilometers up to the Passo Redebus. A long, smooth downhill brings the pack to Pergine Valsugana, right before a new climb to the Passo del Compet KOM: 845 m of elevation gain in about 10 kilometers, featuring steep, double-digit grades.

The route continues descending toward Levico Terme, before a sudden turn skyward to tackle a new and highly demanding climb up the Passo del Vetriolo, the “Strada dei Baiti.” This climb will be followed by a long descent to bring the peloton to the valley floor before taking on the day’s final climb, the Colle San Marco. From its peak, the road features seven kilometers of average descending, and two kilometers of flat riding until the finish in Borgo Valsugana.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Simon Carr's Team EF Education-EasyPost.

Stage 4 of the Tour of the Alps was expected to be truly epic, and Simon Carr delivered a performance that lived up to those expectations.

Back at the race where he took his first pro win just under a year ago, the 25-year old spent the day in the break and put on an incredible display of strength, going solo with 45-kilometers to go, to take his second win of the season.

The peloton early in the stage.

“Today was pretty special also because the first few days were so hard,” said Simon after the finish. “I came here with some pretty legitimate ambitions for the GC and worked really hard for it. But I got here and really struggled with allergies. The team and Juanma – my DS – said they still had confidence in me and those things can go as quick as they come. Today, I found myself again.”

The queen stage of the Tour of the Alps only had two classified climbs on the menu, but virtually no flat roads on the profile; the riders were faced with over 4000 meters of climbing on the 140-kilometer stage.

After going on the attack on the first incline of the day, Simon Carr was joined by teammate Hugh Carthy in the breakaway. The eleven-man break worked well together over the ensuing climbs and built up a sizable lead over the peloton behind.

"The plan for today was exactly what happened," said sport director Juanma Garate. "We knew that we had to be in the break even if the morale was a bit down in the team after a tough few days. The plan was to have the climbers in the break and have the belief that we could do it."

Sergio Higuita (BOH) was the first to attack the break on the Passo del Compet and Simon was the only rider that was able to follow. The two of them crested the climb and worked together on the descent slowly increasing their lead over the chase behind. They didn’t have much time to rest however as the duo quickly took on the brutally steep Passo del Vetriolo.

Simon made his decisive move on the hardest inclines of the climb and rolled off the front with 45 kilometers to go. He rode hard over the climb and took on the tricky descent a little over a minute in front of the charging group of GC favorites behind.

A crash in the group behind helped him extend his lead and seal the victory for the young rider.

“The gap came down to under a minute at one point so I kept on pushing on the downhill,” said Simon. “On the final climb I was more confident but I was definitely running on fumes. I am really happy with the result.”

DS Juanma Garate knew Simon could do it.

"I told Simon yesterday, 'the work you have done to get here will show somewhere, somehow. Just have confidence.' And that's exactly what happened today.

"He came back to the car in the beginning of the stage and said 'I am feeling super strong today.' So when the opportunity came, Simon took it. He did everything perfectly today."

One last stage to go tomorrow. You can be sure that the team will go all in to try to match Simon’s exploits.

Weather in the start/finish city of Schwaz at 2:05 PM, local time: 7C (44F), rain showers, with the wind from the north at 8 km/hr (5 mph). The rain is forecast to continues through the afternoon.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner and new GC leader Juan Pedro Lopez's Team Lidl-Trek.

Juan Pedro López claimed his first win as a professional rider after an impressive attack at 26km from the finish. He joined Giulio Pellizzari as the duo climbed and descended through unabating rain and low temperatures as they gained on the peloton.

Juanpe attacked and dropped Pellizzari on the final climb before descending to the finish in Schwaz. The Spaniard never relented his effort, knowing that every second would count for the general classification. He crossed the line 38 seconds ahead of the chasing group and moves into the race lead by a margin of 31 seconds with two stages left to race.

"It was an amazing day for me, my first pro victory, but it was a really s**t day for everybody. We started with four degrees and rain and it was one of the coldest days on the bike in my life. We started with the objective of not getting cold, but that was impossible, so in the end I changed to the other objective, which was to go for the stage. At the beginning I didn’t feel very good, I didn’t feel my hands, I didn’t feel the rest of my body so good. In the end, I could feel that my legs were good, which was important."

Weather at the finish city of Stans, Austria, at 1:50 PM, local time: 13C (55F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 16 km/hr (10 mph). There is a 9% chance of rain.

The race: Davide Bais (Polti Kometa) did not start.

Here's the report from winner Alessandro De Marchi's Team Jayco AlUla:

Italian Alessandro De Marchi soloed to a memorable and stunning victory on stage two of the Tour of the Alps.

The veteran used all of his experience to outfox his breakaway rivals on the longest stage of this year’s race to take a special first win in Team Jayco AlUla colours for the 37-year-old.

De Marchi initially made up part of a six-man breakaway that opened up a sizeable advantage over the peloton ahead of the first climb of the stage. As the road continued to rise, the numbers in the breakaway started to fall, with just three riders, including De Marchi, remaining ahead of the final obstacle of the day, the category two Gnadenwald ascent.

Patrick Gamper was the first rider to make a bid for glory, but De Marchi refused to panic as he slowly clawed his way back to the head of the race before launching an attack of his own. Simon Pellaud was able to follow the Italian at first, before the three-time Vuelta a España stage winner made his race wining move with 17km to go.

There was no looking back for De Marchi as he raced away over the top of the climb, putting over one minute into his rivals. As the line approached the Team Jayco AlUla man had time to savour the moment and his first victory since 2021.

The stage win sees De Marchi move into the lead of points jersey classification, while teammate Chris Harper maintains his second place overall.

Alessandro De Marchi:
“It took a lot [of courage], but I was confident. Two years ago I found a new, nice, super environment here at Team Jayco AlUla and in the end I knew it was just about the right moment, the right time.

"Already last year in the Giro we were there to play, and this year again, we are there, and with a bit of luck and a bit of courage, sometimes it happens.

"When you are almost 38, in this era of cycling a win like this is one of the most important after so many years, and I repeat, at this age, in this cycling, it means a lot.”

David McPartland (Sport Director):
“Alessandro had the opportunity today to go in the break and he certainly took it with open arms, that’s for sure! He’s one of the best in the business at making it to the finish in breakaways and today he was a crucial part of that strong group.

"When it came down to the business end of the stage in the final, basically he was the strongest on that final climb, without doubt. He really deserved the win, he had the legs to make it happen today and to represent Team Jayco AlUla up there on the podium with a stage win, it’s a fantastic day for all involved.”

Weather at the finish city of Kurtinig/Cortina at 1:55 PM, local time: 24C (75F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the south-southwest at 13 km/hr (8 mph). There is a 4% chance of rain.

The race: Alessio Martinelli (VF Group-Bardiani CSF) did not start and early in the stage Kevin Inkelaar (TDT-Unibet) abandoned.

Here's the report from stage winner Tobias Foss' Team INEOS Grenadiers:

Tobias Foss sprinted to his first victory for the Grenadiers in emphatic style on stage one of Tour of the Alps. The win sees the Norwegian move into the race lead at the start of the five-day event.

The Grenadiers set the pace for the majority of the day, ensuring a six man move never gained more than four minutes of an advantage on the relatively short run to Cortina. On the final climb, with roughly 20 kilometres to go, the pace was high, with the peloton rapidly shrinking.

Over the top, and the team had Foss and Geraint Thomas in a select lead group, with Filippo Ganna working hard to chase back on behind.

A myriad of attacks came and went in the run-in, with both G and Tobias getting stuck in, before a four man move including Foss went clear with under two kilometres to go.

The move rapidly established a gap, as Geraint worked to slow down the chase. Into the sprint and Foss launched from afar, driving into the slight incline all the way to the line, to claim his maiden victory with the Grenadiers.

Geraint Thomas, after some great teamwork, came home sixth, with Filippo Ganna leading the chasing back in twelfth.
