Marco Canola gets a clear win in Salt lake City.

The race: Here's the report from final GC winner Rob Britton's Rally cycling team.

Tour de France: the Inside Story

Resplendent in yellow and surrounded by the orange jerseys of Rally Cycling, Rob Britton crossed the finish line of Stage 7 Sunday afternoon in front of the State Capitol Building, to be crowned the winner of the 2017 Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah. The victory marks his first UCI 2.HC stage race title and is a career-defining moment for the Canadian from Regina, Saskatchewan. A true champion, Britton is known for his relentless work ethic, dedication and loyalty to teammates. These characteristics are essential elements at the core of Rally Cycling and were on display in Utah as every member of the team sacrificed personal ambitions to defend the yellow jersey.

"This win means the world to me," said Britton. "I have been working toward this my entire career. To pull off a win at the Tour of Utah is huge. I don't know what I can say about the team; they were perfect. They never missed a beat and took care of me from day one. The team showed they are one of, if not the strongest, squads in North America. I just can't thank them enough."

Britton took control of the race on Wednesday with an incredible performance in the stage three uphill time trial where he moved into the lead ahead of overnight race leader and teammate, Sepp Kuss. Flying up Big Cottonwood Canyon in a time of 18:26, Britton dominated affairs arriving 13 seconds faster than runner-up Serghei Tvetcov (Jelly Belly-Maxxis) and 26 seconds faster than third-place Gavin Mannion (UnitedHealthcare). His masterful ride gave him a 26 second lead in the general classification over Mannion, with Tvetcov a further two seconds back. BMC’s Brent Bookwalter, the early race favorite, loomed in sixth overall at 44 seconds.

With Britton in the overall lead, and fully confident in their race leader, the team dedicated itself completely to the task of securing final victory. In the fourth stage into South Jordan City, the team endured sweltering heat and constant attacks but controlled the pace throughout the day, thanks in large part to two-time Utah stage winner Eric Young, who gave up his own chances for a third win. In addition to successfully defending the overall lead, Colin Joyce sprinted to a strong fourth place while Tour of Utah fans chose Young as their Favorite Sprinter. The team again defended the yellow jersey with panache in stage five. On the closing circuits around the city of Bountiful, attacks came fast and furious but were neutralized by Sepp Kuss and Adam de Vos. The duo rode tempo, matched every acceleration and delivered Britton safely across the line.

"Rob is one of the hardest working guys on the team," said Eric Young. Day in and day out, every day we train together he is the one pushing the pace. When we had an opportunity this week to put ourselves on the front for him, we all wanted to do it because he deserves it. I might be more of a sprinter, but I’m part of this team, and if they need me to ride on the front, that is what I am going to do. I’m super proud of Rob and the team. Everyone had one or two outstanding performances that were critical, and that is what it takes to win a race like this."

Saturday’s stage six would be the team’s biggest challenge on the road to overall victory. The Tour of Utah’s queen stage included the climb up American Fork Canyon, before finishing atop the 4,000 ft ascent to Snowbird Resort. With a 26-second lead, other general classification riders knew it was their best, and perhaps last chance to dethrone Britton. On the climb over American Fork Canyon, danger men Bookwalter and Taylor Eisenhart (Holowesko-Citadel) charged off the front, and with help from their teammates, who dropped back from an earlier breakaway to assist, built a lead of 1:20. With the yellow jersey threatened, Evan Huffman, Joyce and Danny Pate powered across the foothills east of Salt Lake City, steadily narrowing their deficit. As Huffman dieseled up the lower slopes of Snowbird, the gap to Bookwalter and Eisenhart fell to 15 seconds. It was then Kuss who guided the yellow jersey up the first half of the ascent. Britton then took control on the climb, setting the pace and marking his rivals. Bookwalter and Eisenhart slipped back due to their earlier efforts while neither Mannion nor Tvetcov proved able to distance themselves from Rally’s leader. Britton crossed the line in fifth and cemented his overall lead with one stage remaining.

Heading into the final day through the streets of Salt Lake City, the team once again controlled the pace and kept Britton near the front of the peloton and out danger. In the final run for the line, Marco Canola (Nippo - Vini Fantini) took the win while Britton crossed safely in sixth place to claim the biggest win of his career. In delivering a strong performance throughout the week, Kuss also finished up in ninth overall.

"The guys had a fantastic week, and Rob is on the form of his life," said Performance Manager Jonas Carney. "We brought the best possible team to defend the jersey if he could take the lead. As well as Rob is riding, he couldn't have done it without the team. The guys just stepped up day-after-day and turned themselves inside out so that Rob could win this thing overall. I am super impressed with the way everyone on the team rode. All the guys gave up their chances at any result to make sure we took home the yellow jersey."

Sunday’s overall win at the 2.HC ranked Tour of Utah marks the biggest stage race victory in the team’s 11-year history. With little respite however, the team will look to continue its most successful season to date next week, at the Colorado Classic.

Giulio ciccine

Giulio Ciccone wins the Tour of Utah's queen stage.

The race: Here's the race story from stage winner Giulio Ciccone's Bardiani-CSF team.

Cycling's World Championships

Bardiani-CSF has made yesterday one-two in queen stage of Tour of Utah, from Heber Valley to Snowbird Resort, sixth and penultimate of the race. Giulio Ciccone claimed an amazing solo win, followed at 35” by teammate Simone Sterbini and by Powless (Axeon-Hagens) at 41”.

“We started building this win since the first km and it’s the deserved reward after all the efforts we did in Utah to stand out. We chased the win every day, we never gave up. Today we raced as top team and sharing the podium with Simone has been the cherry on the top” said Ciccone, who took the second success as pro after Giro d’Italia stage in 2016.

Ciccone’s action has been the last and decisive for Bardiani-CSF, but the #GreenTeam animated the race since the beginning: breakaway and attacks by Luca Wackermann and Simone Velasco in the first part, top race management by the whole team in the finale.

“I raced the finale just with regularity. My teammates were amazing, they made perfect preparatory work: without their effort it would be hard to win. Sterbini’s forcing was the launching pad. At 5 km to the finish I tested the legs of other contenders, but no one followed me, so I decided to go alone” said again Ciccone.

“This win proves I’m in good form, but most important I’ve broken through a mental block after a difficult start of the season. This day is a sort of panacea for me and for the whole team as well. Now we just need to focus on the busy final part of the season, exploiting every chance at our best. By my side, I have special thought for Lombardia”.

Besides Ciccone’s celebration, the #GreenTeam could be really satisfied for the bold performance of Sterbini, great gregario for Giulio and brave attacker in the final kms.

“My goal was only put Cicco in the best condition and then defend its position from potential attacks. When he went alone, I saw other riders struggling. I waited the advantage of Giulio was enough, then exploited the situation. I’m really happy for the team and my personal performance as well, let’s continue so” said Sterbini.

Tour of Utah will live its final act today with a circuit in capital Salt Lake City, 118 km total. In general classification Ciccone jumped from 23rd to 6th place, at 2’16” from leader Britton (Rally Cycling).

Travis McCabe wins Utah Tour stage five

The race: Here's the story from stage winner Travis McCabe's Unitedhealthcare team.

Story of the Giro d'Italia volume 2

BOUNTIFUL, Utah – Travis McCabe clinched an emotional win for the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling team on stage 5 of the Tour of Utah. The US criterium champion sailed across the line in Bountiful after timing his sprint perfectly, taking victory by half a bike length ahead of second place.

His win also moves him up to first in the Utah Sports Commission Sprinter competition. Gavin Mannion remains in second overall, 26 seconds out of the yellow jersey currently worn by Rob Britton (Rally).

“This is a stage I’ve been dreaming about all year,” McCabe said in a post race interview. ‘To get the stage and the sprinter’s jersey is phenomenal. I was a little impatient yesterday, so today I waited until 250m to go.”

It was another fast and furious day of racing for the peloton, who averaged 50 km an hour for the first hour of the 185km stage. A break of 12 eventually escaped that included Chris Jones. The move took the pressure of the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling team, who no longer had to participate in the chase.

Once the riders approached the final climbs in Bountiful, the breakaway group came back and fireworks began. The lead changed hands several times as the GC group attacked each other on the climb. “The guys did a phenomenal job of taking care of me and staying in position,” McCabe said.

McCabe lost contact with the leaders on the last climb, but Jonny Clarke was there to help him stay calm and pace back up to the group. “Clarke looked for McCabe to put in him perfect for the sprint, and he was able to finish the great work the team did for him,” team director Seba Alexandre said.

Around the final corner, McCabe was fifth wheel behind Brent Bookwalter (BMC). “I knew it was going to be a fast sprint because of a tailwind,” McCabe said. “When I opened it up with about 250 meters to go, no one could come around me. I’m pretty proud of this win.”

Tomorrow marks the queen stage of the 2017 Tour of Utah. The 98km stage will take the riders from Heber Valley to Snowbird.

Stage 3 profile

Rob Britton

Rob Britton racing to a stage win and the GC lead

The race: Here's the story from stage winner Rob Britton's Rally Cycling team.

Paris–Roubaix: The Inside Story

Rob Britton charged up Big Cottonwood Canyon in the stage three time trial to claim an emphatic victory and take the Tour of Utah leader's yellow jersey. The nine-kilometer uphill course ascended 1,722 ft, finishing at 8,776 ft above sea level. Britton smashed the course in a fantastic time of 18:26, 13 seconds faster than runner-up Serghei Tvetcov (Jelly Belly-Maxxis) and 26 seconds faster than third-place Gavin Mannion (UnitedHealthcare). Britton’s impressive ride gave the team its second yellow jersey of the race and moved him into the overall lead. Overnight race leader Sepp Kuss finished in 17th, while Adam de Vos crossed the line in 20th and kept the Most Aggressive Rider jersey for another day.

"I was excited when I saw there was going to be an uphill time trial,” said Britton. "The event and course suit my strengths, and I just tried to go flat out and into the red. Once you go over the 8,000 ft mark, you really go into oxygen debt. At that point, I just held on for dear life, tried to limit the damage and hold on in the final kilometer. It is great to have a small gap going into the final four stages, but there is still a lot of racing ahead. We have a strong team and plan on keeping the jersey.”

In the general classification, Britton now leads Mannion by 26 seconds with Tvetcov in third, 28 seconds down. Sepp Kuss remains a threat for overall victory sitting just 1:04 back in tenth place. With four stages remaining, the team aims to add to its tally of stage wins and claim overall victory. In tomorrow’s stage four into South Jordan City, the team will look to Eric Young and Colin Joyce to grab another stage victory while also dedicating itself to the defense of Britton’s yellow jersey. The road ahead includes the traditional finish into Bountiful that ends with two demanding circuits that rarely sees the peloton finish intact. Stage six will see the riders tackle the 32-kilometer, 4,000 ft ascent to Snowbird Resort. The Tour of Utah ends on Sunday with a circuit race through the streets of Salt Lake City.

“Today Rob showed he is here to win the bike race.” said Performance Manager Jonas Carney. “He has been riding and training well, so we knew he was going to be one of the top guys. We are going all in to defend the jersey for Rob – it's going to be very difficult. We have a solid team here, but there are four tough days ahead. It’s hot, it’s at altitude, there is a lot of climbing, but we are going to give it everything we have.”

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Brent Bookwalter's BMC team.

Melanoma: It Started with a Freckle

1 August, 2017, Snowbasin (USA): Brent Bookwalter powered to victory on stage 2 of The Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah on the first summit finish of the race, after a dominant performance by BMC Racing Team put Bookwalter in the perfect position in the finale.

With three climbs on the cards, including the summit finish on Snowbasin, it was a battle to get into the breakaway with the peloton neutralizing multiple attempts.

Joey Rosskopf was consistently on the attack and crested the first climb solo to claim the KOM points before eventually, creating the day's breakaway with Marco Canola (Nippo-Vini Fantini) and Oscar Clark(Holowesko-Citadel Racing Team) after more than 50km of racing.

The trio's advantage rose to more than five minutes but the chase was on behind and the gap was down to less than two minutes with 65km and the two final climbs remaining.

Rosskopf showed his strength to ride away from his breakaway companions on the North Ogden Divide and hold off the peloton to claim the KOM points again. 30km before the finish line, the race hit the reset button when Rosskopf was caught and the reduced peloton made their way towards the base of the Snowbasin climb.

Strong performances and a fast pace set by Patrick Müller and Manuel Senni made it difficult for any attacks to go clear on the run into the climb and left a small group to battle for the stage win.

Anton De Vos (Rally Cycling) broke clear from the bunch and hovered in front of the reduced peloton while behind, BMC Racing Team continued to control the situation and slowly brought De Vos back.

Eder Frayre (Elevate - KHS Pro Cycling) went on the attack inside the final kilometer but Bookwalter proved too strong and launched the winning move with 250 meters to go to overtake Frayre and raise his arms in triumph as he secured his first individual win of the season.

Due to a count back on stage results from the opening two days, Bookwalter now sits in second place on the General Classification, on the same time as race leader Sepp Kuss (Rally Cycling).

Interview with Brent Bookwalter

Brent, congratulations! Talk us through that final climb.

"The climb was in two pieces with 4-5km and then a downhill and another 4-5km. We did a good recon of it last week and we knew that it wasn't super steep, so I was anticipating that it would get a little tactical. Before the race we talked it over, probably too much, and all of the different things that could happen and the way we could ride it. As you saw, the guys in the team just made it happen and delivered me perfectly. I wasn't super confident at the bottom of the climb but the further I went up, seeing the team ride so amazingly, I kept getting more confident and just tried to bide my time and be patient and make the right move at the end."

We have seen a big fight for the breakaway on stages 1 and 2. Did that work to your advantage today?

"I think so. We do a lot of races where the breakaway doesn't go for an hour or two so we are used to this really hard racing. I think the harder the early part of the stage can be, the better it is for us. You saw that with our team today. We had Joey Rosskopf in the move and then the guys really rallied around me and delivered me over the North Ogden Divide, the penultimate climb, and then all the way to the base of Snowbasin. You could see that we had a lot of gas left in the tank."

You're now second on GC. What are your thoughts on tomorrow's time trial?

"It will be brutal. It's definitely not my favorite time trial if I had to make one for myself. It's just going to come down to climbing strength, altitude adaption and ability to suffer. It's pretty straight forward, straight up the canyon, and it's not the steepest climb. It still does favour pure climbers but I'm hoping guys like myself, Joey Rosskopf, Silvan Dillier, all of us can do a good ride. We've had two hard days of racing already so I think we'll recover well and hopefully do a good performance."

Jackson Stewart, Sports Director:

"It was a great win by Brent Bookwalter and this will give him a lot of confidence. It was our stage to win and we gave it everything. We wanted to put someone in the move either to have Brent leapfrog to them or put the pressure on the other teams to chase. All eyes are on us so it's incredible how the teams come out to chase when we have someone in the breakaway. This actually helped Brent as it made the race hard for a lot of teams. Joey was willing to sacrifice himself and we saved Kilian Frankiny and Silvan Dillier to support Brent in the finale. Patrick Müller is super good and it was really good to see him doing all of that work."

"We were a bit nervous when the gap was being closed quickly because we thought the race could go again on the North Ogden Divide but Joey had a gap to the bunch over the top and there were a few tries, but nothing eventuated. At that point we went back to our plan A which was to ride into the base of the climb and set Brent up for the win. He timed his move perfectly so it's really great to see Brent take a win like that. The time trial tomorrow isn't super long but I think Brent can put some good time into some of his GC rivals."

Tyler Magner wins stage one

The race: Here's the stage story from Team BMC.

Melanoma: It Started with a Freckle

Stage 1 of The Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah came down to a predicted bunch sprint in Logan, where [BMC rider] Martin Elmiger sprinted to fifth place in a hectic finale after 213km of racing.

The battle for the breakaway was on as soon as the flag dropped but it took almost one hour of racing before 10 riders were able to go clear on the approach to the first categorized climb.

The peloton, featuring all of BMC Racing Team’s riders, sat up and allowed the group to gain an advantage of almost eight minutes before the chase was organized and the gap started to fall to 5’40” inside the final 100km.

The breakaway split on the second ascent of the Logan Canyon while behind, the peloton’s strong pace halved the advantage again to 2’40” with 50km remaining.

BMC Racing Team remained well-positioned towards the front of the bunch and as soon as the race came back together 8km before the finish line, attacks came from the reduced peloton. As the race entered the circuit finish in Logan, the battle for positioning was on as the peloton navigated the tricky parcours.

Silvan Dillier led the peloton across the finish line with one lap to go, before eventually launching an attack inside the final kilometer. Dillier was caught with 500 meters to go, before Elmiger sprinted to fifth place behind stage winner Ty Magner (Holowesko-Citadel Racing Team).

The battle for the General Classification is expected to heat up on stage 2 which sees the peloton tackle three climbs, including the summit finish in Snowbasin.
