Weather at the city of Cagli at 2:15 PM, local time: 14C (57F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the southwest at 10 km/hr (6 mph). There is a 7% chance of rain.

The race: Roman Bardet (dsm-Firmenich-PostNL) did not start after crashing yesterday. Other non-starters include: Campbell Stewart (Jayco AlUla), Damien Howson (Q36.5), Fausto Masnada (Soudal-QuickStep), Matteo Fabbro (Polti-Kometa) and Filippo Fiorelli (VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè).

Here's the report from winner Jonas Vingegaard's Team Visma| Lease a Bike.

Jonas Vingegaard has seized power in Tirreno – Adriatico. In the queen stage, the 27-year-old Dane again proved a size too strong for his competitors. The GC leader made the difference on the tough final climb of Monte Petrano. With only the final sprint stage to go, the overall victory in the Race of the Two Seas seems a certainty.

Early in the stage, a lined-out peloton rolls through the Italian countryside.

During the penultimate stage, the riders faced 3,500 altimeters. The final climb of Monte Petrano was the focal point. Along the way, nine strong riders formed the early breakaway. Team Visma | Lease a Bike, serving GC leader Vingegaard, took control in the peloton to keep the gap small. Once at the foot of the final climb, the escapees were caught by the group of favourites.

Vingegaard, Juan Ayuso and Jai Hindley eventually stood out from the rest. After several attack attempts among the three favourites, the Team Visma | Lease a Bike leader launched the decisive attack with five kilometres to go. Vingegaard systematically built his lead and he reached the finish line solo to take his second stage win in a row.

He's gone. Wearing the GC leader's blue jersey, Jonas Vingegaard has left everyone else behind on his way to a solo victory. RCS Sport photo

"It was great to get the second win," said the Dane. "On the road, the team again did a fantastic job to bring me in a good position to the foot of the final climb. On that climb, Bora - Hansgrohe maintained a very high pace, which was not to my disadvantage. Hindley tried to attack a few times, after which I finally decided to go myself. After that it was a time trial to the finish."

"With two stage wins, we can speak of a perfect week for the team. Tomorrow it's a matter of reaching the finish line safely to secure the overall victory as well. I am very satisfied with how my feeling was during this round. I am in better shape than last season at this time," Vingegaard concluded.

Team Visma | Lease a Bike's victory counter in 2024 reached 13 after this victory. On Sunday, the flat final stage in San Benedetto del Tronto awaits.

Weather at the finish at Valle Castellana at 2:20 PM, local time: 11C (51F), sunny, with the wind from the east at 8 Km/hr (5 mph). There is a 4% chance of rain during the afternoon.

The race: Diagnosed with a fractured scaphoid (wrist bone) sustained in a stage two crash, Chris Froome (Israel-Premier Tech) did not start. Also not starting were Anthony Delaplace (Arkéa-B&B Hotels), Kristian Sbaragli (Corratec-Vini Fantini) and Rune Herregodts (Intermarché-Wanty).

Here's the race organizer's stage five summary:

Just four days ago, when Jonas Vingegaard didn’t quite shine in the opening time trial of the Tirreno-Adriatico 2024, conceding a few seconds too many to a dangerous rival such as Juan Ayuso, everyone knew that it would only be a matter of time before the Dane would try to ride his way back to his favourite position: the one where he looks down on everyone.

The chance came today on the steepest section of the San Giacomo climb, the first real test for the GC men, whose summit was located around 24 km before the finish. The 27-year-old Visma-Lease A Bike rider finished the 144-kilometre stage over a minute ahead of the chasing pack led by Juan Ayuso and snatched the lead from Jonathan Milan. Jonas had been kicking for a few days, waiting for the right moment to show his prowess. From the very first ramps he put his team-mate Attila Valter in the lead to set the pace, and shortly afterwards the “hornets” launched their attack. Ben Tulett’s forcing split the peloton and Vingegaard sped away on the steep 11% section, looking behind him once before steering ahead and almost out of sight.

About 50 kilometers into the stage, the riders climb towards Castellalto (7.7km @ 4.5%), the day's first KOM. RCS Sport photo

In 5 km Jonas extended his advantage to one minute on the ascent and kept increasing it on the descent thanks to some masterful trajectories, showing the world that he has no weak points at the moment and establishing what is likely to be an unassailable lead. Vingegaard now has the chance to extend it on the next mountainous stage and secure the trident trophy.

In the last two years, Vingegaard has won all but two of the stage races he has competed in: last year’s Paris-Nice, in which he was beaten by Tadej Pogačar, and the Vuelta a España, which he “left” to team-mate Sepp Kuss. In between, he won a Tour of the Basque Country, a Tour of the Dauphiné, a Tour de France and twice the O Gran Camiño. And in Spain, a couple of weeks ago, he played the cannibal, winning three out of four stages and the general classification, leaving his rivals in the dust.

This is precisely why we have little faith in the assumption that he will merely control the situation tomorrow. In the Queen Stage, atop Monte Petrano, we can bet he will want his Maglia Azzurra to shine even brighter. Rivals are warned.

Speaking seconds after the stage finish Vingegaard said: “We always had the plan to give it a shot today. The team rode amazingly. The plan was perfectly executed and I’m really happy to pay the guys back. We wanted to go full gas from the bottom of the climb with Ben [Tulett] taking over from Attila [Valter] and then Steven [Kruijswijk]. I didn’t know it was the international women’s day but I dedicated this win to my wife for all the support she gives me”.

Thursday, March 7: Stage 4, Arrone - Giulianova, 207 km

Jonathan Milan wins the stage and takes over the GC lead. RCS Sport photo

Melanoma: It Started with a Freckle

David L. Stanley's masterful telling of his bout with skin cancer Melanoma: It Started with a Freckle is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Giulianova at 1:40 PM, local time: 12C (54F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the northwest at 19 km/hr (12 mph). There is a 4% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage four summary.

It had been rumoured on the eve of the race that Jonathan Milan had come to this Tirreno-Adriatico with a knot to untie: namely, understanding and testing his level. After his exploit at last year’s Giro d’Italia, which included a stage win and the Maglia Ciclamino, the Lidl-Trek rider was called upon to confirm his sprinting ambitions. His victory in Giulianova marks his second of the season, after he opened his tally at the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana last month.

If competition in the latter was rather limited, in this Race of the Two Seas, he is confronting himself with the crème de la crème of fast wheels, the ideal context to put his growth to test. And what remarkable feedback he is giving himself and the team, not only because of today’s masterful stage win, pipping Jasper Philipsen on the finish line in Giulianova, but also for the way the Italian interpreted and tackled all the previous stages.

Just like we rightfully extolled Philipsen as the best sprinter in the world, we should just as vehemently celebrate Milan as probably the greatest sprinting talent out there. Jonny took the Belgian’s wheel and skipped him in the last 50 metres, beating him by half a bike length while still seated in the saddle. This tells us one thing: Jonathan Milan from Buja, in the province of Udine, is among the strongest sprinters in the world.

The riders met harsh conditions at the summit of the Valico di Castelluccio. RCS Sport photo

To call him a simple sprinter, however, would be somewhat reductive. The last two sprints, in fact, were anything but easy to interpret due to somewhat tricky finishes, with the road constantly rising. We saw the likes of Tim Merlier, Caleb Ewan and Mark Cavendish, among others, being dropped, while Milan was invariably there fighting for glory. Yesterday he failed to catch Phil Bauhaus, today he timed it to perfection and overtook none other than Philipsen himself. Tomorrow he will enjoy a day in the Maglia Azzurra (which he will probably lose at the end of the stage), but whatever the outcome of this Tirreno-Adriatico, he will return home with a new awareness, which we are sure he will bring to bear in the coming events, providing us with plenty of fun.

Today, however, Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X Mobility) – the only survivor of a six-man breakaway – also deserves a special mention. After being out for 205 km, the Norwegian had enough left in the tank to try one last burst inside the final kilometre. He was denied the joy of victory by 40 merciless metres, but for what it’s worth, let us thank him for making this finale all the more electrifying.

Story of the Giro d'Italia volume 2

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Giro d'Italia, A Year-by-Year History of the Tour of Italy, Vol 2: 1971 - 2011 is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Gualdo Tadino at 1:50 pm, local time: 4C (40F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the southwest at 11 km/hr (7 mph). There is rain in the area and a 40% chance of rain at Gualdo Tadino.

The race: Here's the report from winner Phil Bauhaus' Team Baharin Victorious.

Phil Bauhaus roared back to victory with a commanding win on stage 3 of Tirreno-Adriatico, covering 220km from Volterra to Gualdo Tadino. Battling through the challenging hills around Siena and a 4% uphill finish on a cold, wet day, Bauhaus showcased his sprinting prowess. Despite the demanding course and a day that seemed favourable to attackers, the breakaway succumbed to the peloton in the end. In a hard-fought sprint, Bauhaus, perfectly positioned by Bahrain Victorious in the finale, unleashed a powerful acceleration to secure his first win of the season, outpacing his former teammate Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek).

Reflecting on the victory, Bauhaus expressed his joy, saying, “I’m more than happy to have my first win of the year, and also the first after more than a year, as the last one was at the Tour Down Under in 2023. Today for the sprinters was really hard, but the team always believed in me. They were convinced I can get a good result and It gives me big motivation. In the end I was strong enough and they were right in believing in me. We made a good plan with the team how to fuel as it was a long stage and we spent lots of energy. You need power especially in such a hard final for the sprinters. I guess this was the key, and actually I had enough energy in the final. Also without my teammates it would not have been possible. I was a little bit doubting maybe that it was too hard for me, but already yesterday evening they were believing in me and this gave me a lot of confidence.”

TBV Sports Director Gorazd Stangelj praised Bauhaus and the team’s exceptional performance, stating, “ It’s always a great result to win in a stage in race like Tirreno and today more than ever for how we took it. It was a tough stage and a tough final. All day in the cold, with rain. Phil was our man, but seen the course we also had a plan B. Achieving a win that it’s not 100% expected is even more sweet. With three guys in the top ten – Caruso 7th and Arndt 10th – it means they did an exceptional job. It was not needed to say nothing as everybody knows exactly what to do and they did it without any mistake. Chapeau to our boys.”

Bicycle History

James Witherell's book Bicycle History: A Chronological History of People, Races and Technology is available in both print and Kindle eBook formats. To get your copy just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Follonica at 2:00 PM, local time: 18C (65F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the northwest at 13 km/hr (8 mph). There is a 1% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the race organizer's report.

The fact that he had not yet sprinted this year had perhaps caused many to forget how strong Jasper Philipsen actually is. Last year he had sprinted to victory no fewer than 19 times, more than anyone else in the world, clearly demonstrating that he is the top sprinter in the peloton.

Tim Merlier (Soudal-QuickStep), however, seemed perfectly capable of challenging this status thanks to a sparkling start to the season, capped by two victories at the AlUla Tour and three at the UAE Tour, defeating all the top sprinters. All, except one: Philipsen. In the second stage of Tirreno-Adriatico 2024, the strong Soudal-QuickStep rider was annihilated by the powerful sprint of his countryman in the jeans-style jersey of Alpecin-Deceuninck.

Just as he did last year, Philipsen opens his season account at Race of the Two Seas, and if the rest of the year is anything like 2023, then the other sprinters had better start attending those races that Philipsen decides to skip. It’s worth remembering that, after his two stage wins at Tirreno, last year he scored at Brugge-DePanne, Scheldeprijs and took home four stages at the Tour de France along with the green jersey, as well as an impressive second place at Paris-Roubaix behind team-mate Mathieu Van der Poel.

“This winter I didn’t do any special training for sprints, because I know that’s where I’m strong, but I concentrated more on training for the classics”. With these words Jasper confirmed what had already been guessed last year: he is not content with being a simple sprinter, he is aiming to be a more complete rider. Should he manage to do it as well as he sprints, well, that would be trouble for many. In the meantime, he has three more chances to update his score in this Tirreno-Adriatico.

Weather at the turnaround at Viareggio at 1:30 PM, local time: 13C (55F), rain showers, with the wind from the west at 10 km/hr (6 mph). The rain is forecast to end around 2:15.

The race: Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner and first Maglia Azzurra Juan Ayuso said: “It’s great. It wasn’t clear until the final. Everyone knew Filippo Ganna was the main rival. He was up there at the intermediate time check. It’s a very emotional victory, a very special one. I had to save the legs in the first part. When I turned back I knew I was going to do a good time. This gives me a good motivation for the week ahead”.

Here's the report from winner Juan Ayuso's UAE Team Emirates:

Juan Ayuso put in a highly impressive performance against the clock today on the opening stage of Tirreno-Adriatico, clinching victory against top competition in the ITT at Lido di Camaiore (10km).

The 21 year old Spaniard clocked a blistering time of 11:54 at an average pace of 52.6kmph on the flat course, beating former World Time Trial Champion Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) by just 1”.

The result puts Ayuso into the general classification lead heading into stage 2, a mostly flat 198km stage from Camaiore to Follonica.

Ayuso: “I think everybody knew Ganna was going to be the big rival to try and beat me. He was there and then in the final until the last second, we still didn’t know. It’s a very emotional victory, a very special one. I think it gets a good morale and good motivation for the week ahead.

"Before I started, I saw the times and the average speed was much less coming back then going due to the headwind. So I knew I had to save the legs and then when I turned around, I knew I was going to do a good time because I still hadn’t gone full gas, and I was already at the same time in the intermediate.

"I didn’t know in that moment that I could win against the GC guys. I didn’t know that I was going to do a good time. Coming back, I just gave my all until the finish."
