Weather at the start/finish city of Alula at 3:30 PM, local time: 18C (64F), fair, with the wind from the southwest at 11 km/hr (7 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the race organizer's final summary.

The final stage of the 2022 Saudi Tour ended, as expected by a bunched sprint and Dylan Groenewegen proved he was the fastest man of the pack claiming a second success on the event. After his master piece on the decisive hilltop finish of stage 4, Maxim Van Gils wins this 2nd edition of the Saudi Tour. In the final general classification, the young Belgian wins by 36’’ over Santiago Buitrago and 48’’ over Rui Costa.

For the final stage of the 2022 Saudi Tour, the 86 remaining riders had the opportunity to discover the splendid Old Town of Al Ula where the start was set. A quick stroll through the picturesque cobbled streets before taking off for a 138-km stage.

Soon after crossing the km 0 line several riders blasted away. In vain at first. Eventually Jannik Steimle (QST) made his move. The German was later caught by three other men at km 14: Charmig, Blue jersey Urianstad (both UXT) and of course the untiring Tzortzakis ready to battle it out for the Most Active rider’s jersey. At km 25 their advantage over the pack had reached 1’55’’. A gap that was rapidly stabilised by the likes of teams Lotto-Soudal and BikeExchange-Jayco.

At the first Intermediate Active sprint, Tzortzakis captured 3 precious points ahead of his rival Urianstad while the pack had the escapees under control at 1’35’’. After so many efforts this week, Tzortzakis was the first to be dropped. The Greek was swallowed by the chasing pack with 25kms to go. The leading three could then still count on a 50’’ advantage.

The second Intermediate sprint was claimed by Urianstad which meant he was guaranteed to win the Blue Jersey. Eventually only one man remained in the lead, Steimle, but he was finally caught with exactly one lap to go, on the line where the bonus sprint was claimed by Van Poppel (BOH).

The pack mainly controlled by team Bahrain Victorious remained bunched all the way to the last straight. With just under 3kms to go, Caleb Ewan (LTS) lost all hopes of a second success when he punctured. Well led out by his new BikeExchange team mates, Dylan Groenewegen powered to the line beating Dan McLay (ARK) and Davide Ballerini (QST). The Dutchman wins again on this Saudi Tour and adds a 58th success to his career record. He also wins the Red jersey (point’s classification) ahead of Caleb Ewan by just one point.

Perfectly surrounded by his Lotto-Soudal squad Maxim Van Gils made it to the finish within the peloton and that of course meant a first overall victory in the Middle-East. The young Belgian who had made the difference yesterday at the Skyviews of Harrat Uwayrid wins the general classification ahead of Santiago Buitrago (TBV) and Rui Costa. As well as the Green jersey, the 22-year-old also wins the White jersey for the best young rider. Martin Urianstad (UXT) finishes most active rider of this 2nd edition.

Weather at Alula near the start/finish at 4:00 PM, local time: 17C (63F), fair, with the wind from the southwest at 40 km/hr (25 mph). No rain.

The race: Here's the stage four report from the race organizer:

More wind and more drama in the Saudi Tour. After a fierce battle on the flat part of this fourth stage where several teams made the best of the tough conditions to create chaos in the pack, a group of 15 reached the bottom of the final climb to the Skyviews of Harrat Uwayrid. Andrea Bagioli (QST) was the first to attack but was later caught and dropped by young Maxim Van Gils (LTS). The 22-year-old went on to claim his first professional victory ahead of Mezgec (BEX) and Declercq (QST). The Belgian also takes command of the general classification and will be wearing the Green Jersey on the final day of the event tomorrow.

After an action-packed stage 3 due to the strong wind blowing across the Al Ula region, it was slightly calmer this morning at the start of day 4 of the Saudi Tour set at the Winter Park. The 90 remaining riders took off just before 11 AM for a 149-km stage all the way to the spectacular Skyviews of Harrat Uwayrid, in other words a demanding summit finish awaited the peloton.

As soon as the first kilometre, ‘’mister breakaway’’ Polychronis Tzortzakis (KUW) took off from the pack. He was rapidly caught by Muhamad Othman (TSG). Both men reached km 21 enjoying a 2’30’’ lead. While Tzortzakis made it first to the first Intermediate sprint (km 57) the pack had lost more time: 3’20’’.

The situation changed dramatically with the wind picking up. Under the influence of teams DSM and of course Quickstep-Alpha Vynil, the pack broke up into several groups, leaving only 16 riders in the first one at km 80. Six kilometres later the front two were caught and eventually dropped. The leading 16 continued pushing hard. In that leading group were the likes of Bonifazio, Oss, Turgis (TEN), Mezgec (BEX), Van Gils (LTS), Bagioli (QST) and four team mates, Van Poppel (BOH) and Consonni (COF).

The front group reached the second Intermediate sprint (km 120) led out by Turgis with a 1’20’’ advantage over the chasing pack led by the Bahrain Victorious squad of Green Jersey Santiago Buitrago. With 25kms to go, fifteen riders remained in the lead (Denz dropped) enjoying a 1’25’’ advantage. With 10kms to go Andrea Bagioli attacked on the steep climb of the day. The Italian was later caught and dropped by Maxim Van Gils. The Belgian reached the summit claiming the bonus sprint (km 140) with a 30” lead over Bagioli and 1’ over Rui Costa (UAE) and the Green Jersey group.

Van Gils enjoys his wn.

Despite the strong wind blowing on the last 8kms, Van Gils continued his impressive solo effort. The 22-year-old eventually crossed the finish line victoriously, beating Luka Mezgec (BEX) and Tim Declercq (QST) by 40”. Van Gils claims his first ever pro win on this Saudi Tour and takes command of the general classification. He’ll therefore be defending the Green Jersey (and the White Jersey for best young rider) on tomorrow’s final stage enjoying a rather comfortable lead of 36” over Buitrago and 48” over Rui Costa. The Red Jersey (point’s classification) remains on the shoulders of Caleb Ewan (LTS) while Urianstad is still the leader of the Most Active rider classification.

Weather at Alula near the start/finish at 1:45 PM, local time: 23C (73F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 29 km/hr (18 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from the race organizer:

After a fabulous battle in the windy conditions of Saudi Arabia, stage 3 ended once again with a bunched sprint. For his third race under his new BikeExchange-Jayco colours Dylan Groenewegen managed to deliver. In the old town of AlUla, the Dutchman outsprinted Dan McLay and Caleb Ewan to conquer victory. Despite suffering all day in the echelons, Santiago Buitrago keeps the overall leader’s Green Jersey.

Seeing the riders show up close to 20min before the flag was dropped on the start line said it all… A windy day was expected and there was a tense feeling in the peloton. Indeed, shortly after leaving the impressive Tayma Hadaj well, chaos struck. The strong sidewind on the opening 30kms created all sorts of damage. Crashes (Selig and Laas),  dropped riders and of course echelons. Eventually after 14kms only 26 riders remained at the front including: Ewan (LTS), second overall, Gaviria (UAE), Oss, Turgis (TEN), Groenewegen (BEX), Bagioli, Ballerini, Senechal and three other Quickstep riders, Van Poppel (TBV), Consonni (COF) as well as White jersey and 3rd man overall Charmig (UXT), but not the overall leader Santiago Buitrago (TBV). And what a battle it would be. The front 26 reached km 30 with a 1’05’’ advantage over the Green Jersey group. Slowly that gap started dropping but it still took close to 30kms to close that gap.

After a very short moment of calm, three riders took off: Turgis (TEN), Planckaert (AFC) and Declercq (ARK). They reached the first Intermediate sprint (km 83) led out by Planckaert with a 3’20’’ advantage. After another change in direction the wind specialists of Quickstep decided to create more drama. Again the pack broke into several echelons with only 16 riders in the front group including the Green Jersey and 6 Quickstep men, but no Caleb Ewan this time. While the front three were caught, a grueling battle continued. Finally things settled down at km100 and the pack bunched up together again.

Once again, there was no stopping Anthony Turgis. The Frenchman decided to give it another go at km 102, but this time on his own. He reached the second Intermediate sprint with a 3’ lead over counter-attackers Bonifazio (TEN) and Keisse (QST) and 5’ over the pack. While the two chasers were caught, Turgis bravely continued his effort despite the strong headwind. He still had a 2’ advantage with 25kms to go. The TotalEnergies rider managed to make it to the bonus sprint with a 40’’ lead but was caught shortly after.

Despite a solo effort from Niki Terpstra with 5kms to go, the pack remained bunched all the way to the old town of Al Ula. Well led out by his new BikeExchange-Jayco team mates, Dylan Groenewegen powered to the line, beating Dan McLay (ARK) and Caleb Ewan (LTS) to win his first success of 2022, his 57th overall. After an intense battle all day long, Santago Buitrago manages to keep his overall leader’s Green Jersey and the best young rider’s White Jersey and will have a 3” advantage over Caleb Ewan when he starts tomorrow’s decisive stage 4. The Australian remains the leader of the point’s classification while Martin Urianstad keeps his Blue Jersey (most active rider).

Wednesday, February 2: Stage 2, Taibah University - Abu Rakah, 163.9 km

Stage 2 profile

Santiago Buitrago wins stage two.

Les Woodland's book Tour of Flanders: The Inside Story - The rocky roads of the Ronde van Vlaanderen is available as an audiobook here. For the print and Kindle eBook versions, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at Alula near the start/finish at 4:00 PM, local time: 23C (73F), fair, with the wind from the south at 11 km/hr (7 mph). No rain.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage two summary.

Stage 2 of the 2022 Saudi Tour will be a day that Santiago Buitrago will remember for a very long time. The 22-year-old Colombian captured his very first professional victory in Abu Rakha. Making the best of the final decisive climb, the Bahrain Victorious rider powered away from the pack and eventually beat to the line Andrea Bagioli (QST) and Charmig (UXT). A fine day for Buitrago who also takes the overall leader’s Green Jersey.

After yesterday’s breathtaking stage that included a passage through the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hegra, the 96 riders of the 2022 Saudi Tour gathered together in front of the Taibah University for the start of stage 3. And a fast start it would be as the peloton headed towards the north west of the Al Ula region.

Things settled down when Jeroen Meijers (TSG) broke away at km2. He was rapidly caught by two other brave escapees: Best young rider of the Tour, Martin Urianstad (UXT) and Polychronis Tzortzakis (KUW), both already present in yesterday’s two breakaways. In their quest for the Most Active rider’s jersey there would be quite a battle for points between these two men. Round 1 would go Urianstad’s way when he claimed the first Intermediate Active sprint (km16) ahead of rival Tzortzakis while the peloton, not too concerned, remained 3’15’’ adrift.

The gap grew to 4’10’’ at km 30 before gradually dropping down as Thomas De Gendt took control of the peloton’s stage. With the leading trio under control, the race could go on quietly as the riders enjoyed a pleasant tailwind. At the second Intermediate Active sprint (km94), Urianstad again captured the most points comforting his lead in the blue jersey classification. Meanwhile the chasing pack led by UAE Team Emirates and Lotto-Soudal moved closer: 2’10’’. The gap dropped down to 30’’ with 25kms to go. The front men still managed to make it clear to the bonus sprint (km 142) with Urianstad beating Meijers while Tzortzakis was dropped and caught by the pack.

The last rider to survive would be Meijers but he too was gobbled up by the pack at km 150.

With just over 6 kilometres to go Julius Jayde (KUW) gave it a go on his own but the South African’s solo effort only lasted two kilometres. Eventually on the final climb of the day to reach Abu Rakha at 1273m in altitude, Santiago Buitrago (TBV) and Daniel Oss (TEN) pulled away. They were soon caught by Andrea Bagioli who had clearly recovered from his crash yesterday. While Oss failed to follow, Buitrago remained smatrly in the wheel of his Italian companion. The Colombian made his decisive move in the final 100m, beating Bagioli by just a second while Anthon Charmig (UXT) finished third at 7”. Buitrago claims his first ever pro success in his second year under the Bahrain Victorious colours. He also captures the overall leader’s Green Jersey but only has a slim 7” advantage over Caleb Ewan (LTS), sixth today and still in the lead of the point’s classification. Alongside the overall lead, Buitrago also becomes the best young rider of the event while Urianstad keeps the Blue Jersey.

Tuesday, February 1: Stage 1, Winter Park - Winter Park, 198 km

Stage 1 profile

Weather at Alula near the start/finish of Winter Park at 4:00 PM, local time: 18C (64F), fair, with the wind from the north at 11 km/hr (7 mph). No rain.

The race: Here's the race organizer's report:

The Saudi Tour is back and it returns with a bang. The opening stage of this second edition that now takes place in the region of AlUla, north-west of the Kingdom, ended as expected with a bunched sprint. After surviving the 7-km long gravel section through the spectacular site of Hegra the pack made it bunched to Winter Park where Caleb Ewan (LTS) conquered his first win of the year. The Australian beats Martin Laas (BOR) and Fernando Gaviria (UAE) to claim the first Green Jersey of this Saudi Tour.

Two years after the inaugural Saudi Tour took place in and around Riyadh, it was back to racing in Saudi Arabia but this time in the north western part of the Kingdom around AlUla. A splendid setting and perfect weather conditions for the start of stage 1 at the Winter Park. After the strong wind blowing during the opening ceremony a day prior in front of the impressive Elephant Rock, it was far calmer for this opening stage.

THREE IN THE LEAD
Shortly after 11 AM, the 96 riders representing 15 teams took off for a 198-km race that would include a gravel sequence while going through the picturesque Hegra zone. It took just a kilometre for Polychronis Tzortzakis (KUW) to break away from the pack. The Greek was rapidly caught by two other escapees: Urianstad (UXT) and Mat Amin (TSG). The leading trio reached the first Intermediate Most Active Rider sprint (km 18) with an advantage of 3’40’’ as Urianstad captured the most points. The pack eventually started chasing led out by teams BikeExchange-Jayco and Lotto-Soudal. Just before a change in direction the gap had dropped down to 1’30’’ and with the wind that had picked up blowing from the side, the pack accelerated. After a brave first effort, the front men were caught at km 75.5.

UNTIRING DUO
Another left turn meant the wind would be even more favourable and the pace of the pack continued picking up. There was no breaking away at this speed... at least until km 102 when Urianstad and Tzortzakis again powered away. At the second Intermediate Active sprint won by Urianstad, the gap over the peloton had reached 1’30’’. Their second effort was once again vain as the Norwegian and his Greek companion were caught again at km 147. The pack remained bunched as it entered the splendid site of Hegra.

SPLENDID HEGRA
Once on the 7-km long gravel section of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hegra, drama occurred early. Indeed, a crash sent several riders to the ground including Italy’s Andrea Bagioli (QST). Among the dropped riders was also Ronde Van Vlaanderen and Paris-Roubaix champion Niki Terpstra (TEN). Meanwhile teams Lotto-Soudal and Quickstep were pushing hard at the front.

MIRZA IN THE LEAD
With 11 kms to go, UAE’s Youssif Mirza managed to take off. The rider from the Emirates saw his lead grow gradually to 15” just five kilometres from the line. But it wouldn’t be enough to stay clear of the hungry pack. He was caught just before the final 3-km sign. Well led out by his Lotto-Soudal sprint train, Caleb Ewan flew to victory. For his debut at the Saudi Tour, the Australian crossed the line with a comfortable lead over Marttin Laas (BOR) and Fernando Gaviria. Ewan naturally captures the first overall leader’s Green Jersey of this edition. He also takes command of the point’s classification while Martin Urianstad claims the Blue Jersey for the Most Active Rider as well as the White Jersey for the best young rider.
