Melanoma: It Started with a Freckle

David L. Stanley's masterful telling of his bout with skin cancer Melanoma: It Started with a Freckle is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Kraków at 2:10 PM, local time: 29C (84F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the south-southwest at 8 km/hr (5 mph). There is a 5% chance of rain.

The stage: Here's the race organizer's stage 7 description.

It’s no secret that Kraków is to the Tour de Pologne what Paris is to the Tour de France. The 81st edition of the race traditionally concludes at the Kraków Błonia, where sprinters are expected to compete for the victory once again. Recent history remembers a successful breakaway on the relatively flat stage finishing in Kraków, so any scenario cannot be ruled out here.

Riders will start the final stage from the Wieliczka Salt Mine, then head towards Myślenice, where the first LOTTO intermediate sprint will be located. Later in the race they will compete for special prizes sponsored by Decathlon and Soudal, respectively in Czernichów and Kaszów.

Everything will conclude with three laps around Błonia. In recent years, sprinters from the peloton have won there, such as Arnaud Demare, Davide Ballerini, Pascal Ackermann, and Peter Sagan.

“On the last day, we will start from the Wieliczka Salt Mine. The stage will pass through beautiful terrain, and traditionally, the finish will be at Błonia. We say that Kraków is to the Tour de Pologne what Paris is to the Tour de France, and we want to maintain this tradition,” said Czesław Lang.

The race: Here's the report from second-place Tim Merlier's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Tim Merlier racked up his 18th podium since the beginning of the year after a hectic bunch sprint in Krakow, where the 81st edition of the Tour de Pologne came to an end Sunday afternoon. One of the fastest riders in the world, victorious in more than a dozen races this season, the Belgian had the speed to fight for the win on stage seven, but unfortunately ran out of road, as Olav Kooij (Visma-Lease a Bike) took the victory.

The general classification remained unchanged after what had been a pretty straightforward day, meaning that Jonas Vingegaard kept the yellow jersey following this stage that had in the spotlight the sprinters’ teams, all keen on having a mass gallop.

Following the week spent in Poland, Soudal Quick-Step sits on 27 wins scored by seven different riders since the start of the season, and cemented its place just outside the podium of the UCI World Team Classification.

Story of the Giro d'Italia, volume 1

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Giro d'Italia, A Year-by-Year History of the Tour of Italy, Vol 1: 1909 - 1970 is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Bukovina at 1:50 PM, local time: 32C (89F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the southwest at 8 km/hr (5 mph). There is a 3% chance of rain.

The stage: Here's the race organizer's stage 6 description.

The penultimate stage of the 81st Tour de Pologne will be considered the queen stage. The peloton will cover 183 kilometers over the climbs of Małopolska, starting in Wadowice, the birthplace of Pope John Paul II. After commencing the race in this city, the riders will head towards the famous route near Bukowina Tatrzańska and BUKOVINA Resort.

Along the route, there will be two intermediate sprints sponsored by LOTTO – in Jabłonka and Szaflary. Points towards the PZU mountain classification will be contested on Category I climbs in Gliczarów Górny and Rzepiska, including the renowned and challenging Harnaś and Bukovina Walls.

The finish line at BUKOVINA Resort will test all riders, with the victory being sought after by pure climbers. Previous winners at Bukowina Tatrzańska include Rafał Majka, Remco Evenepoel, Joao Almeida, Simon Yates, and Matej Mohorič.

“We start in Wadowice – we want to honor the city where the great Pole, Pope John Paul II, was born. We will pass through Przełęcz Krowiarki and Szaflary, and then enter the well-known circuit that cycling enthusiasts are very familiar with. The finish will be at BUKOVINA Resort, after passing climbs such as Gliczarów, Ściana Harnaś, the same place where Rafał Majka and Remco Evenepoel have won before. This stage will be dedicated to those who may not be completely satisfied with their general classification. It will be a queen stage that can change everything," said Czesław Lang, General Director of the Tour de Pologne.

The race: After crashing yesterday Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) did not start today's stage.

Here's the report from third-place Oscar Onley's Team dsm-firmenich PostNL:

The penultimate day of racing at the Tour de Pologne saw the peloton take on a staple of the race with the uphill finish at Bukovina Resort, and it’s punchy gradients. Setting out with a plan, Team dsm-firmenich PostNL wanted to help take control of the day and make the race hard in the finale with a view of going for a top stage result with Oscar Onley and potentially moving up on GC through that.

Riding well as a group throughout the day, the team stayed safe in the bunch and protected Onley while the peloton kept the break in check. Coming into the final 40 kilometres the team then came towards the front and alongside other teams upped the pace, thinning things out as the chase behind the break continued. On the penultimate ascent of the day Onley attacked but was quickly shut down by the other GC contenders and things regrouped, with the last man standing from the break caught.

Coming onto the final three kilometre climb to the line Romain Bardet moved Onley up expertly and increased the tempo, stringing the peloton out. Once again Onley attacked from his wheel but he just couldn’t get separation from the other GC riders. In the end the stage came down to a reduced uphill sprint where Onley showed great legs, alongside some grit and determination to fight to third place on the day moving up to tenth place on GC.

Onley expressed: “The guys did another good job to hold me in position coming into all the key sections today. I really have to thank Romain for the work he did to try and make the last two climbs hard enough hoping to reduce the group. In the end it came down to a sprint again where I managed to pick up third place.”

Team dsm-firmenich PostNL coach Matt Winston continued: “I think it was a really good and solid team performance from the guys today. We wanted to make the race as hard as possible to give Oscar the best possible chance to go for a result on the stage and try and move up on the GC. I think the guys did that really well. Oscar gave everything to get third on the stage and he even tried to go on the attack to take time but he wasn’t given any leeway from the GC group. I think we can say it was a really nice result for him and the team.”

Weather at the start/finish city of Katowice at 1:55 PM, local time: 31C (87F), fair, with the wind from the southwest at 10 km/hr (6 mph). There is a 1% chance of rain, growing to 19% at 4:00 PM.

The stage: Here's the race organizer's stage 5 description.

The Tour de Pologne regularly visits Katowice, and this time will be no different. The capital of the Silesian Voivodeship will host both the start and finish of the 5th stage of the race. The 187-kilometer route will be varied and feature many climbs, amounting to over 1500 meters of elevation gain. Although the stage will favor sprinters, it will not be an easy passage.

Twenty-one kilometers after the start, in Jaworzno, the first LOTTO sprint bonus will be located. Riders will then enter the Kraków-Częstochowa Jura and showcase the beauty and charm of the Trail of the Eagles’ Nests. The peloton will visit well-known places such as Ojców, where riders can compete for the PZU III category KOM. They will then return to Silesia, passing through the Decathlon special bonus in Bukowno and the LOTTO sprint bonus in Mysłowice.

Soon after, they will enter Katowice, stopping at the famous Nikiszowiec district, from where only 11 kilometers remain to the finish. The finish will be located under the Katowice Spodek, on Walenty Roździeński Avenue.

“The fifth stage will start and finish in Katowice, but it will also be a unique stage. We will ride the ‘Trail of the Eagles’ Nests’ – passing through Mysłowice, Jaworzno, we want to present the Kraków-Częstochowa Jura to viewers and riders. It won’t be an easy stage, as the elevation gain will be about 1500 meters. From a tourist point of view, it will be a beautiful stage, similar to those in Lower Silesia,” said Czesław Lang, highlighting the charm of the Kraków-Częstochowa Jura and the castles built on it, known as the “Eagles’ Nests.”

Katowice has a rich history in the Tour de Pologne, and in recent years, winners there have included Mattia Cattaneo, Remi Cavagna, Fabio Jakobsen, Pascal Ackermann, and Fernando Gaviria. Who will join this group this year?

The race: Here's the report from third-place Olav Kooij's & GC leader Jonas Vingegaard's Team Visma | Lease a Bike.

Olav Kooij finished third in the fifth stage of the Tour de Pologne. In another hectic final, the 22-year-old Dutchman only had Jordi Meeus and stage winner Tim Merlier in front of him after the finish.

For the second day in a row a sprinting opportunity awaited in the Tour de Pologne. Today the riders rode 188 kilometres on relatively flat roads. After the start in Katowice, three riders formed the breakaway of the day, but the sprinters' teams kept the trio under control. They were caught at ten kilometres from the line.

With four kilometres to go, the peloton was startled by a crash. The Team Visma | Lease a Bike riders remained unscathed. After the crash, a depleted peloton rode towards the finish line. Kooij was led to the front at the right moment by teammate Mick van Dijke. After a strong launch, Kooij was eventually passed by Meeus and stage winner Merlier.

Classification leader Jonas Vingegaard looks back on the hectic final kilometres. “It was even more nervous than yesterday”, the Dane said. “We are racing without earpieces and that causes more stress in the peloton. It's supposed to make the sport safer, but I think it has the opposite effect. The battle to be at the front of the bunch creates unnecessary risks.”

“Tomorrow's stage is one that should suit me. The climbs and hot weather conditions will make it extra tough. We will do everything we can to defend my position in the general classification. My feeling is getting better and better.”

Olav Kooij wins stage four.

Story of the Tour de France Volume 2

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, Vol 2: 1976 - 2018 is available in print, Kindle eBook & Audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Prudnik at 2:10 PM, local time: 28C (82F), cloudy, with the wind from the north at 6 km/hr (4 mph). There is a 14% chance of rain, growing to 36% at 4:00 PM.

The stage: Here's the race organizer's stage four description.

It appears that only on the fourth day of the 81st Tour de Pologne will sprinters get their chance for a stage win. The stage from Park Zdrojowy in Kudowa-Zdrój to Prudnik will be flat, although it will paradoxically start with a few kilometers of an uncategorized climb.

On the 195-kilometer route, there will be three LOTTO sprint bonuses – in Bystrzyca Kłodzka, Ząbkowice Śląskie, and Otmuchów – which will certainly attract riders competing for the blue jersey of the active rider. Points for the PZU mountain classification will also be up for grabs, thanks to the II category KOM at Jaworowa Pass. In the later part of the stage, there will be no climbs capable of splitting the peloton, so we can expect the fastest riders in the field to battle for the win in Prudnik.

“The fourth stage will be dedicated to the great cyclist and my dear friend Stasiek Szozda, as we will finish in Prudnik, where he lived. We start from Kudowa-Zdrój, over 200 kilometers – I think it will be a more sprinter-oriented stage, and the entire peloton will arrive together,” said Czesław Lang, General Director of the Tour de Pologne.

The stage and finish in Prudnik will be dedicated to the memory of Stanisław Szozda. The outstanding Polish cyclist, Olympic and World Championship medalist, winner of the Tour de Pologne and the Peace Race.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Olav Kooij's Team Vicma | Lease a Bike.

Olav Kooij has won the fourth stage of the Tour de Pologne. In an exciting bunch sprint, the 22-year-old Dutchman beat Sam Bennett and Mads Pedersen. Jonas Vingegaard remains GC leader.

The fourth stage in the Tour de Pologne took the peloton from Kudowa-Zdrój to Prudnik, where a first chance for the sprinters awaited. Along the way, Team Visma | Lease a Bike's riders took control in the peloton. Entering the final kilometres, Kooij was in an excellent position. The young Dutchman sprinted convincing to his third stage victory in as many editions in Poland.

“I already had great memories from my previous participations here, so I am very happy to add another win”, Kooij said afterwards. “After several hard stages, we knew there was a chance for me today. It was a nervous final, but I was perfectly placed going into the final kilometer. I'm happy I could finish it off for the team today.”

“The previous stages already went extremely well for us”, Kooij added. “With Jonas and Wilco Kelderman, we are in an excellent position in the general classification. Today we went for the stage win and we succeeded. Tomorrow it could turn into a sprint again. I'm looking forward to that.”

Weather at the finish city of Duszniki-Zdrój at 2:00 PM, local time: 30C (86F), sunny, with the wind from the southeast at 14 km/hr (9mph). There is a 7% chance of rain.

The stage: Here's the race organizer's stage three description.

The third stage of the 81st Tour de Pologne will take riders and fans on a journey through the climbs of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. The peloton will touch most of the significant climbs in the region, and the entire stage will start at the Old Mine in Wałbrzych.

After less than 30 kilometers, riders will tackle the first PZU II category KOM – the famous Walim Pass. They will then compete for points at the LOTTO sprint bonus in Pieszyce, followed by more climbs. The fast-moving peloton will face the Jugowska Pass, Saint Anne Mountain, and the categorized climb in Karłów.

The peloton will pass through this climb twice, but only once will they compete for points in the PZU mountain classification. After the second climb and covering about 150 kilometers, the riders will enter Duszniki-Zdrój, where – like last year – they will race for victory on the demanding climb to COS Jamrozowa Polana.

In last year’s Tour de Pologne, we experienced many Polish emotions on this climb. The stage winner was Rafał Majka from UAE Team Emirates, and Michał Kwiatkowski, representing INEOS Grenadiers, took third place. We hope for a repeat and more Polish victories!

“We are still in Lower Silesia – starting from Wałbrzych, followed by many tough climbs. The finish will be at Jamrozowa Polana in Duszniki-Zdrój, where last year Rafał Majka won ahead of Michał Kwiatkowski. Before that, the riders will have to tackle very difficult climbs, totaling over 3000 meters of elevation gain. Among others, Walim, Silver Mountain, and practically all the climbs in the area,” described Czesław Lang.

The race: Wilco Kelderman (Visma | Lease a Bike) crashed during the neutral start, so the race was delayed a bit.

Here's the organizer's stage 3 summary.

The series of difficult, mountainous stages at the start of the 81st Tour de Pologne concluded with a segment from the Old Mine in Wałbrzych to the climb up to COS Jamrozowa Polana in Duszniki-Zdrój. Despite many aggressive moves, the favorites finished in contention for the victory, with the fastest being Thibau Nys, who secured his second stage win in this year’s race. Jonas Vingegaard from Team Visma | Lease a Bike retained the ORLEN leader’s yellow jersey.

Jonas Vingegaard remains the GC leader.

The stage, filled with climbs, from the Old Mine in Wałbrzych to the ascent up to COS Jamrozowa Polana in Duszniki-Zdrój, promised great excitement. At the start, a 3-man breakaway took off, including PZU Mountain Classification leader Michał Paluta (Poland National Team), Jan Maas (Team Jayco AlUla), and Nicolas Debeaumarche (Cofidis).

The riders gained a few minutes on the peloton and competed in the PZU KOM sprints at Walimska Pass, Jugowska Pass, and St. Anne’s Mountain. On each of these climbs, Michał Paluta, wearing the polka-dot jersey, was the best, motivated by the cheers of Polish fans along the route. Nicolas Debeaumarche from Cofidis won the LOTTO intermediate sprint in Pieszyce.

On the last of the mentioned climbs, the peloton accelerated, after which the breakaway grew by several riders. Passing along the Stołowe Mountains, the riders climbed towards Karłów, the last PZU KOM prime. Once again, Michał Paluta was the best there.

“We pulled away quite easily, immediately setting a high pace to gain at least a minute’s lead, and it worked. Midway through the stage, another group of riders joined us, and the pace increased significantly. I focused on the mountain sprints, which was my goal from the start,” Michał Paluta recounted.

However, the breakaway didn’t manage to reach the finish line in Duszniki-Zdrój before the main group. Diego Ulissi from UAE Team Emirates was the first to start the sprint, but the finale at Jamrozowa Polana in Duszniki-Zdrój belonged to the young Thibau Nys from Lidl-Trek, who claimed his second stage victory in the 81st Tour de Pologne.

“I knew this was a route that suited my characteristics and the type of rider I am. I knew I could get close. Today I found the legs to try again and it went well. Before coming to the Tour de Pologne, I focused on my strengths and worked very hard. I have to thank my team for believing in me and putting me in the right position. It was a bit difficult for me after losing Ryan in the crash, it made me lose focus for a few moments. It’s never nice to know that one of your team mates has crashed and I hope he’s OK now. This win is for him,” said Thibau Nys.

Diego Ulissi and Wilco Kelderman, second in the ORLEN general classification, completed the podium. The leader remained his teammate from Team Visma | Lease a Bike, Jonas Vingegaard, a two-time Tour de France winner who reached the finish line with the first group. At the finish, he was happy to defend the leader’s jersey and recalled 2019, when he couldn’t keep the lead after a stage win.

“It was a very demanding stage with descents and climbs. We had a few dangerous moments. The finale was very beautiful. Thibau Nys showed that he is a rider suited for this type of finish, but all those fighting for the general classification were at the front and finished—Vingegaard, Ulissi, Kelderman.” said Czesław Lang, General Director of the Tour de Pologne.

Tomorrow, the riders will fight on a stage from Kudowa-Zdrój to Prudnik, where sprinters are expected to compete for the victory.

Tuesday, August 13: Stage 2, Mysłakowice - Karpacz 15.4 km individual time trial

Stage 2 map & profile

Tim Wellens on his way to winning stage two.

Paris–Roubaix: The Inside Story

Les Woodland's book Paris-Roubaix: The Inside Story - All the bumps of cycling's cobbled classic is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Karpacz at 1:45 PM, local time: 27C (81F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the east at 6 km/hr (4 mph). No rain is forecast.

The stage: Here's the race organizer's stage two description.

The second stage of the 81st Tour de Pologne will be an opportunity for a rematch after the first segment of the national tour. The colorful race caravan will remain around Karpacz and Orlinek, where the finish line will again be located – this time for an individual time trial.

This iconic time trial stage returns to the Tour de Pologne. In the past, the stage with the finish on Orlinek was won by, among others, Alberto Contador, for whom it was his first professional victory. Later, the Spaniard triumphed in the general classifications of all the grand tours.

The 15-kilometer time trial route will be demanding – riders will start in Mysłakowice, then face a flat section followed by a climb up Orlinek. It will be a treat for fans who will be able to cheer on their favorite riders up close.

The time trial stage will be tailored for cyclists specializing in this discipline but also for those who feel good in mountainous terrain.

“We stay in Karpacz, on Orlinek. The time trial will be on a 15-kilometer route. We will start in Mysłakowice, not entering Karpacz directly but going around it. It will be a nice climb, a cronoscalata (from Italian: ‘climb against the clock’). We remember that Alberto Contador started his career here, winning such an individual time trial,” said Czesław Lang.

Riders will start the individual time trial every minute, and the top ten in the general classification will compete in two-minute intervals.

The race: Juan Sebastian Molano (UAE Team Emirates) did not start. Alex Kirsch (Lidl-Trek) was the first rider off.

Here's the race organizer's stage two summary.

The Tour de Pologne stopped in Karpacz, where the second stage also finished – an individual time trial starting in Mysłakowice. The best on the 15-kilometer route was Tim Wellens of UAE Team Emirates, with Jonas Vingegaard – now the new ORLEN general classification leader – taking second place.

Big stars battled today for victory in the individual time trial on the second stage of the 81st Tour de Pologne. The competition took place on a 15-kilometer route from Mysłakowice to the climb to Orlinek in Karpacz and favored time trial specialists who perform well in mountain rides.

“Individual time trials are a completely different competition from road racing. More and more often, in stage races, it is the individual time trial that decides the overall classification victory. Riders prepare for this competition in a completely different way. The same goes for the bikes, which have a full wheel known as a ‘disc,’ an aerodynamic water bottle, and a handlebar extension known as an ‘aero bar,’ which allows the cyclists to position themselves on the bike to have the least air resistance. The cyclists also compete in a special helmet and a one-piece suit that allows them to ride very fast while conserving energy at such high speeds. The warm-up is also crucial. The riders must be warmed up at the start because they need to exert maximum effort from the very beginning of the race,” said Tomasz Marczyński, a former professional cyclist, including with Lotto Soudal, and now a television expert.

After yesterday’s victory – also on Orlinek – he leader of the ORLEN general classification and the last rider to start was Thibau Nys from Lidl-Trek, but he had already said yesterday that it would be hard for him to compete with the best. In the first part of the time trial, the Poles showed themselves well, including national representative Kacper Gieryk and the current Polish elite champion Filip Maciejuk, racing with Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe. Both riders took the lead after their runs, but later others took over.

Experienced Romain Bardet from Team dsm-firmenich PostNL performed well but was overtaken by more than a minute by Tim Wellens, the Belgian champion from UAE Team Emirates, who already has a general classification victory in the race. Now, winning the jersey will be tough, as he suffered significant losses yesterday, but he took full advantage of today’s opportunity.

“This victory was different from my last one in Poland. I knew the time trial would be very important for the general classification, as I lost a lot of time yesterday. Today, I didn’t expect to win because there are many good riders here, including Jonas, but I’m very happy that I won,” said Tim Wellens.

Jonas Vingegaard will start stage three in the leader's yellow jersey.

The aforementioned Jonas Vingegaard, the main favorite of today’s time trial and the stage winner of the Tour de Pologne in 2019, finished second, just 9 seconds behind the winner. After the race, however, he was satisfied – he became the new leader of the ORLEN general classification, leading his teammate from Team Visma | Lease a Bike, Wilco Kelderman, by 24 seconds, who fell on one of the turns. “I wanted to win today’s stage, but Tim rode a very good time trial. I also did well, and I’m happy with the jersey. I hope today’s stage was crucial for the entire race. I was counting on doing well in the individual time trial and also on taking the ORLEN general classification leader’s jersey. I think the most challenging stages will be tomorrow’s and the sixth one. Of course, you also have to be very careful on the sprint stages so as not to lose time or have an accident,” said Jonas Vingegaard.

Diego Ulissi from UAE Team Emirates completes the podium of the GC and Felix Grossschartner, another rider from Rafał Majka’s team, took third place in today’s stage. The Pole finished in 37th place today, and in the general classification, he is 19th. The best-placed Pole today was Piotr Pękala, who took 25th place.

“I didn’t really know what to expect today because I hadn’t started in an individual time trial for a long time. But such a long, steady, and strong climb has always been my strength. Although I didn’t really know what I was capable of today, I tried to do my best. I may have started a little too cautiously, but when the climb began, I felt I was in my environment. The result is satisfactory, especially since the mechanics of the Polish national team were assembling my bike last night, and I wanted to thank them very much for that. I didn’t think at all that I could be the best of the Poles today. I just focused on my effort and tried to do my best to make up for yesterday’s stage, which was very tough for me,” said Piotr Pękala after today’s stage.

Tomorrow, the third stage of the 81st Tour de Pologne. The cyclists face a mountain challenge  from Wałbrzych to Duszniki-Zdrój.

Thibau Nys wins stage one.

Weather at the finish city of Karpacz at 2:00 PM, local time: 24C (75F), fair, with the wind from the southwest at 8 km/hr (5 mph). No rain is forecast.

The stage: Here's the race organizer's stage description.

The 81st edition of the Tour de Pologne will start with a demanding stage from Wrocław to Karpacz on August 12. Riders will set off from the famous Centennial Hall, which will host the presentation of all teams and riders the day before. After a ceremonial section on the roads of Wrocław, the competitors will begin the proper race.

The first part of the stage, measuring just under 160 kilometers, will be flat, but that doesn’t mean it will lack excitement. Riders will compete for the LOTTO sprint bonus in Sobótka, and then – as the terrain begins to rise – for the PZU III category KOM, located at Tąpadła Pass.

Heading towards Karpacz, cyclists will pass through the special Soudal bonus in Świdnica, the Lotto sprint bonus in Czarny Bór, the PZU II category KOM at Kowarska Pass, and the special Lake Hill bonus in Karpacz. The pace will be very high there, as riders will climb the iconic Orlinek, where Tour de Pologne stages have often ended. Last year, Slovenian Matej Mohorič from the Bahrain Victorious team triumphed there and went on to win the overall classification of the entire race.

The tough finish should provide fans with a lot of excitement and lead to the first selection in the fight for the yellow jersey of the general classification leader.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Thibau Nys' Team Lidl-Trek.

Belgian talent Thibau Nys wins the first stage of Tour de Pologne and continues his personal streak of wins in stage race: one (at least) in every multi-day event he participated in this year!

Race after race, Thibau Nys is confirming his style, an almost unique mix of strength and talent. Few in the peloton can boast his explosiveness, timing and strength in races that end with a short kick. Today, in the first stage of the Tour de Pologne, the young Belgian proved it again, crossing the finish line alone after a sprint that proved impossible for the peloton to match.

In his comeback race after a long break, Nys didn’t hesitate to take his seventh win of the season.

“I think it’s pretty hard when you know it could be a good chance but you are coming back to racing after a break of many weeks. So, today’s win is even more nice. I went into the last 300 meters today with the confidence that I could make it. The last meters before crossing the finish line, when I was in control, I could really enjoy and taste the victory.” - Thibau

Everything happened on the final, decisive kick. A couple of attempts broke the balance in the last five kilometers, but it was Thibau’s move that made the difference with about 300 meters to go. “It was a long sprint, but I didn’t want to take any risks,” he explained. His attack left no room for response by Kelderman (Visma) and Nerurkar (EF), who finished second and third at 3″. At 6″ was the group of the GC contenders, led by Vingegaard (Visma).

Nys will start tomorrow (15km uphill TT) with the leader’s jersey, but by his own admission, with these small gaps, it will be hard to keep it. “I believe that in the future I can compete for the GC in races like the Tour de Pologne, but it’s not time yet,” he said.

More words from Thibau on today’s win:
“I think I proved in the last couple of months how much this kind of finish suits me. I got more and more confident and now I know I can be among the most competitive riders in the peloton, at the moment, on days like this. I’ve learned what it takes to win on this finish, but this also brings a kind of nervousness because I know how hard it is to make it happen.

“I’m really happy I made it today. If you had told me I would take a win in every stage race I started, I would have laughed. It’s like a dream. I’m really proud about this because it’s the result of constant effort, hard work and a strong mindset. Without this and the support of Lidl-Trek, on and off the bike, this would not have happened.

“I’m convinced that these are the kind of the races I have to focus more on in the future and, of course, try to keep growing to be among the best in the world. That’s my goal, my motivation. Step by step, day by day, that’s what I want in my future.”
