Weather at the finish city of Poitiers at 2:40 PM, local time: 23C (73F), cloudy, with the wind from the south at 23 km/hr (14 mph). There is just a 2% chance of rain, though there was rain at the start.
The race: Here's the report from second-place Paul Penhoët's Team Groupama-FDJ:
Paul Penhoët came close to winning this Friday in Poitiers, in the closing stage of the Tour Poitou-Charentes en Nouvelle Aquitaine. However, at the end of this fourth day of racing, and after remarkable work from his teammates, the young French sprinter had to settle for second place in the sprint behind Arnaud Démare, thus scoring his seventh podium of the season. Enzo Paleni (7th) and Eddy Le Huitouze (9th) secured their top-10 overall.
As usual for its last day of racing, the Tour Poitou-Charentes in Nouvelle Aquitaine headed to Poitiers on Friday, in a fourth stage of 175 kilometres which suited the sprinters. Yet, a five-man breakaway including Sebastian Berwick (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), David Martin (Polti Kometa), Baptiste Gillet (Arkea-B&B Hotels), Dries De Bondt (Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale) and Axel Narbonne Zuccarelli (Nice Métropole Côte d’Azur) still tried to catch the peloton by surprise.
“It was a strong breakaway, which took a 3’30 lead, and Uno-X tried to gamble as much as possible in the back to force the sprinters’ teams to chase,” explained Frédéric Guesdon. “There was a moment of doubt, but things quickly got back to normal once we got a 3/4 tailwind on small roads. That made the peloton nervous, and it quickly came back on the leading group. We were just about to put one guy to chase, but we didn’t need to do it in the end.” On the Poitiers’ finishing circuit, the gap quickly dropped, the fugitives were caught one after the other, and only De Bondt was left in the lead at the start of the last fourteen-kilometre lap.
“The whole team was really motivated because we saw on the first stage that we were the best team to lead a clean sprint”, indicated Paul Penhoët. “We were all the more motivated since we had messed up a bit on the second day. We all wanted to do well, and in the end, that’s what we did. All the guys did a great job throughout the stage. There was a lot of wind, but we were always well positioned, I didn’t need to do any unnecessary effort. It was really great.”
“The whole team was at Paul’s service, and we said that on this type of circuit, we had to ride as a team as much as possible, and that the collective strength would make the difference”, added Frédéric. “The goal was to be all together around Paul. When you’re together, you also manage to impose yourself more easily in the first positions of the peloton. That’s what they did all day and right up until the last lap.” On this last lap, precisely, the last breakaway rider surrendered while the peloton was reduced to around sixty units to head towards the sprint. All the Groupama-FDJ riders were there.
“We were still in a great position at the top of the hill on the last lap, then in the last four kilometres, with the headwind, we all got back together, we all found each other and we managed to execute what we said in the briefing, which was to lead out a clean sprint with the whole team,” Paul said. “It was nice to see.” “Everything went as we had imagined,” added Frédéric. “The rouleurs rode until the last kilometre, then Matt opened the sprint to launch Cyril, Marc and then Paul. They really did what they had decided to do.” The train took the lead, Paul Penhoët made his effort as he wished too, but at the end of the final straight, one man proved to be faster: Arnaud Démare.
“I really wanted to do the best possible sprint to give the guys a reward,” said Paul. “Unfortunately, it didn’t work out. I wanted to start the sprint first because it was a difficult finish, but I ended up launching from a little over 200 metres. It was maybe a little far with the headwind, but that’s what I wanted to do, so I don’t necessarily have proper regrets. Arnaud is still a great sprinter. When he’s in your wheel and you go a little too early, it’s hard to beat him.” “We know that when there’s no big fight for position, Arnaud is among the best,” Frédéric added. “But the boys can be proud of their work. They’re the ones who stretched out the peloton and allowed for a clean sprint to happen.”
It is therefore with a stage podium and two riders in the top 10 overall that Groupama-FDJ completed their week of racing. “We are obviously missing the victory, because we are chasing that”, concluded Frédéric. “That being said, it was a group of youngsters, and it is good that guys like Enzo or Eddy, who are domestiques all year, can go and get results. It’s “only” seventh and ninth in the Tour Poitou-Charentes, but they come out of here in good spirits and should still go up a level for the end of the season. Paul’s second place is also positive for the future, given the year he had. This group raced really well as a team, and I felt this evening, when they left each other, that they’re really motivated to get back together, perform, and go for a victory in the next races.”
“The results are mixed because I would have liked to win to reward the boys, but I’ll really keep in mind the teamwork and I thank everyone for this week,” concluded Paul, whose next event will be the BEMER Cyclassics.

The race: Here's the report from second-place Mirco Maestri's Team Polti Kometa.
Only the defending champion Waerenskjold could beat Mirco Maestri in the Tour Poitou Charentes time trial. The captain of Team Polti Kometa, one of the last riders to start from Menigoute among the GC leaders, completed the challenging 29.2 km to Fontaine-le-Comte in 32’05” and had the thrill of sitting in the “hot seat” for a few minutes.
After finishing on the final podium in last year’s edition, Mirco is now 6th overall thanks to this brilliant 2nd place. Tomorrow’s ending stage will start from the same finishing location as today and will conclude in the regional capital Poitiers: anything can happen, both due to the particular course layout and the various intermediate sprints that count for time bonuses.
Maestri: “This performance leaves us super satisfied, I’m feeling good and have delivered some of the best numbers of my career. I thank sports director Zanatta behind me for pushing me to my limits. I only regret a few seconds lost on the opening day, however the standings are tight and we’ll need to think about both attacking and defending.”
Stefano Zanatta and Giovanni Ellena were thrilled from the team car: “He flew from the first push out of the blocks and kept a steady pace throughout the race! His average speed was 54.6 km/h, only an ITT monster like the Norwegian from Uno X could do better. Tomorrow, we’ll try to further improve our classification.”

Arnaud Démare:
I'm beaten by a thread. My opponent launches before me by half a second. The strongest man won today. I'd like to thank my team-mates from the Arkea-B&B Hotels team for the great job they did for me. We came back up at the right time, one kilometre seven hundred metres from the finish. It was ideal. We knew how to be patient and put in our effort. I don't want to make any excuses, I finished second. That's just the way it is. I came here to win in a sprint, and I've still got one more chance to do that, on Friday in Poitiers. Tonight, I'm disappointed. But I'm not going to give up until the end.

We're obviously disappointed because we're not racing for second place. The Arkea-B&B Hotels riders reacted well today. We assumed our responsibilities by riding with the Uno-X team. But we're beaten. That's sport. There will be an individual time trial tomorrow and the final stage on Friday in Poitiers. Arnaud is this evening 6th in the provisional overall classification of the Tour du Poitou-Charentes. We're going to fight right to the end. Nothing's done yet. The time trial will be important, as will the bonuses awarded on Friday. We're not going to give up.

Weather at the finish city of Cognac at 2:00 PM, local time: 26C (78F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 18 km/hr (11 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.
The race: Early in the stage after crashing, Léo Danès (CIC U Nantes Atlantique) abandoned.
Here's the report from Team Groupama-FDJ:
The riders did not have an easy time on Tuesday, in the opening stage of the Tour Poitou-Charentes en Nouvelle Aquitaine. Due to a fierce fight for the breakaway and then an intense chase at the end of the race, the pace never really slowed down heading towards Cognac. Attentive and offensive, Enzo Paleni managed to join a strong group at the halfway point, then to stay away from the peloton until the finish. The young rider from Groupama-FDJ, however, had to settle for fifth place of the day, twelve seconds ahead of his teammate Paul Penhoët, winner of the peloton sprint.
The week’s least difficult stage, on paper, was supposed to launch the Tour Poitou-Charentes en Nouvelle Aquitaine this Tuesday from Les Gonds, with 178 kilometres to cover towards Cognac. Yet, the riders decided to make it hard and intense. The day’s first breakaway only formed after an hour of racing, and it didn’t last long. “The whole day was hectic,” commented Frédéric Guesdon. “We expected a fast start, we knew we had to be careful, but I didn’t think it would last so long. The most serious move went before the hills, some teams didn’t agree with it, and it lit up again in the hardest part of the stage. At the end of this section, there were riders everywhere.”
“The race was hard from the start, the attacks kept on coming,” confirmed Enzo Paleni. “In the hills, it was going all over the place, and we came out with about twenty riders.” After passing six climbs, and after 100 kilometres of racing, a group of seven men eventually went clear with the former rider of “La Conti”, who got the company of Théo Delacroix (St-Michel-Mavic-Auber 93), Samuel Leroux (Van Rysel-Roubaix), Lawrence Warbasse (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Fredrik Dversnes (Uno-X Pro Mobility), Thomas Gachignard (TotalEnergies) and Francisco Munoz (Polti-Kometa).
“The goal was to go for the sprint with Paul today, we knew that it was the team’s best chance of victory”, said Enzo. “I had to be careful at the start of the stage regarding the breakaways, but it wasn’t a real goal to take part in them. The race ended up happening like that, so I went for it 100%.” ”Enzo was in front, Thibaud was in the chasing group, and all the others in the peloton behind,” added Frédéric. “We were well represented, the goal was to wait and let Enzo do his own race in front. He’s doing well in the time trial, it could have been an opportunity to take a small lead in the general classification, but we had to think above all about the stage victory, because the riders with him were of his level. We also had an option with Paul in the peloton, but we played the offensive card.”
Given the initial disorganization in the pack, the leading group first took a two-minute lead, but the gap dropped to one minute thirty kilometres from the line. A real fight then took place, and the breakaway was able to live up to this battle. Enzo Paleni also made a few accelerations at the front, and the group was reduced to five men. The quintet worked well together to keep one minute with ten kilometers to go, and still forty-five seconds five kilometres from the finish.
Despite a peloton coming back at full speed, and a little “looking at each other” situation in the last kilometre, the breakaway was therefore able to fight for the victory in Cognac, in a five-man sprint on a slight uphill road. “I finished fifth, but we were four on the same line”, said Enzo. “The UnoX-Mobility rider (Frederik Dversnes, editor’s note) won but he had not worked much in front because his team was pulling behind. I am not 100% satisfied because I wanted to do better at the finish, but at least I have a small advantage for the general classification and before the time trial.” The peloton eventually crossed the line twelve seconds behind the fugitives, and it was Paul Penhoët who took sixth place of the day.
“We shouldn’t take it as a frustration,” said Frédéric. “It mainly shows that the boys are doing well, they were up there, and Paul won the sprint. It wasn’t for the win, of course, but the sprint might have been different if it had been. Enzo is in the mix for the general classification, Paul is doing well, and there are two stages left to try and go for the win.” An opportunity should come as for tomorrow in Niort, while Enzo Paleni is in fifth place overall on Tuesday, nine seconds behind the Norwegian leader.
