Weather at the start/finish city of Eibar at 1:40 PM, local time: 25C (77F), sunny, with the wind from the southeast at 19 km/hr (12 mph). No rain is forecast.

The route: As in 2023, this will be the final stage of the Itzulia. A special and demanding stage from the get-go, where the main protagonists of the day will be the riders competing in the general classification. And where a great team will be very important to ensure control, as in previous editions.

The race: Not startling: Loe Van Belle (Visma | Lease a Bike) & Guillermo Silva (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA)

Here's the race organizer's stage six summary:

We have reached the sixth and final stage of the Itzulia 2024. With both start and finish lines in Eibar, 137 kilometres and 7 mountain passes to go. The general classification is very tight with only a few seconds separating the favourites. Mattias Skjelmose (71, LDT) to defend his yellow jersey.

The day, as throughout the Itzulia, started very quickly and a very large breakaway formed with 22 riders. Almost every team had a rider involved, Visma-Lease a Bike had 3 riders.  Behind, it was up to Lidl-Trek to maintain the gap to the escapees. The most significant rider in the breakaway in terms of the general classification was Brandon Rivera (167, IGD), at 1’21” behind the leader. After the first two mountain passes of the day, the breakaway was 3’20” ahead.

At the front, David de la Cruz (234, Q36) upped the pace on the climb to Gorla which he managed to reach alone. The leader’s team was still pulling away from the peloton with a lead of 3’50”. The breakaway continued on its way, with several attempts to escape the breakaway, but without success.

Krabelin had arrived, the ascent to Arrate, one of the most feared mountain passes of the Itzulia. The breakaway kept up the pace and the attacks began from behind. Marc Soler and William Junior Lecerf jumped from the peloton at the start of the tough ramps. The race leader was 2’30” ahead. As the climb wore on, the main group started to disperse. There were no attacks among the favourites. At the Markina-Xemein pass, with 54 kilometres to go, the race leader was 55 seconds ahead of the chasing group and 1’30” ahead of the peloton. In the latter group, Bora-Hansgrohe started to close the gap in anticipation of a possible attack by Max Schachmann (36, BOH).

Marc Soler finally managed to get into the leading group of the race thanks to the work of his teammate Sjoerd Bax. At which point, and with 40 kilometres to go, he was the virtual leader of the race. Good move so far from UAE Team Emirates. Igor Arrieta (102, UAD) led the breakaway and maintained the gap. Marc took the points in the second intermediate sprint of the day. It was getting complicated for the leader.

The leader, seeing his victory at risk in Izua, upped his speed and set a very strong pace Only Ayuso, Carlos Rodríguez, Santi Buitrado and Isaac del Toro were able to follow. First Carlos Rodríguez and then Ayuso, counterattacked Skjelmose who lost a few seconds. Juan Ayuso did not look back and went solo. Ahead of him, his team-mate Marc Soler was waiting to take him further. The yellow jersey did not give up and caught Carlos Rodríguez on the climb, a rider who has gone from strength to strength at this Itzulia. On the descent to Etxebarria, Skjelmose managed to link up with Ayuso’s group. The last mountain pass of the Itzulia was the last chance to make a difference and Juan Ayuso attacked just at the start of the pass, with only Carlos Rodríguez on his wheel. The yellow jersey found an ally from the breakaway, Oscar Onley (155, DFP), to follow the two escapees, with Marc Soler still on his wheel.

The two Spaniards understood each other perfectly, and with 14 kilometres to go were already 25” ahead of Skjelmose.

Finally, Juan Ayuso and Carlos Rodríguez reached the finish line together with enough of an advantage to secure the stage victory, the overall victory and the podium. A great display by the riders in the last stage of the Itzulia 2024.

Behind them, Skjelmose’s group arrived aware that he had lost the txapela. The final podium was comprised of: Carlos Rodríguez and Mattias Skjelmose.

GC winner Juan Ayuso

Weather at the finish city of Amorebieta Etxano at 1:30 PM, local time: 23C (74F), sunny, with the wind from the southeast at 16 km/hr (10 mph). No rain is forecast.

The route: The start promises to be the only “quiet” part of the day until the descent to the first of the 4 passes through Amorebieta. From there, the race climbs Urkiola, a Category 1 climb, and enters a circuit involving two climbs up Muniketa and another non-scoring steep slope. It will then cross the finish line checkpoint in reverse and through Amorebieta twice before reaching the finish.

The race: Emils Lipins (dsm-fimenich-PostNL) & Sebastian Berwick (Caja Rural- Seugos RGA) did not start.

Here's the race organizer's stage five report:

Following yesterday’s stage, the riders lined up at the start in Vitoria-Gasteiz to tackle the 175.9 km to Amorebieta-Etxano. With the favourites out of contention, a new race scenario opened up for the remaining riders.

The stage started with the riders in a compact group, the peloton did not want to allow a breakaway. The race progressed at an average speed of 53 km/h for the first hour. After leaving the province of Araba, there was a crash which caused Mikel Landa and Pelayo Sánchez, among others, to drop out. Once again, the Itzulia was plagued by falls.

On the Urkiola climb, the hardest ascent of the day, Sepp Kuss (3, TVL) and Isaac Del Toro (104, UAD) upped the pace and broke away from the peloton. Having achieved a maximum lead of 1 minute they took their foot off the gas after reaching the plain, with more than 60 kilometres to go Lidl-Trek led the pack.

The whole group had compacted again until a large breakaway formed with 9 riders before the second pass through Amorebieta-Etxano: Johannes Staune-Mittet (5, TVL), Mauro Schmid (67, JAY), Harrison Wood (97, COF), Mathieu Burgaudeau (141, TEN), Martijn Tusveld (156, DFP), Enekoitz Azparren (177, EUS), Ivan Cobo (193, EKP), Jimmy Janssens (203, ADC), and Jose Manuel Diaz (221, BBH).

The peloton again looked to regain control of the stage and caught the breakaway by maintaining a high pace and constant attacks. Marc Soler (106, UAD) and Santi Buitrago (113, TBV) both tried, the Bahrain-Victorious rider linked up with the only remaining escapee, Jimmy Janssens and started the descent The main group did not want to leave any space and reduced the gap on the descent. The downhill was very fast, with several gaps in the group.

The stage was a hard nut to crack, another group of 8 riders formed, but failed to understand each other. It was clear to Lidl-Trek that they could not allow any breakaways with such small gaps in the general classification. Another attack would allow a group of 5 riders to gain a 30” margin over the peloton. The leader’s team pulling from behind as always, with UAE Team Emirates on the wheel.

The race was well ahead of schedule, with an average speed of over 47 km/h. Now the breakaway started to work, although the last climb to Muniketagaina remained. The riders battled the approach to gain the leading positions, with many riders looking like they had a chance of taking the stage or perhaps more. Isaac del Toro tried to set a hard pace, but the peloton, with Tao Geoghegan Hart in the lead, closed the gap.

The last few kilometres of the stage transpired at breakneck pace with Santi Buitrago launched downwards, making it difficult for other riders. Finally neutralised, with 6 kilometres to go, it was the turn of UAE Team Emirates’ Brandon McNulty to start his charge. Followed by Tao Geoghegan Hart still hard at work for his leader. Other teams started to help with the chase glimpsing an opportunity to compete for the stage.

He was neutralised with less than 4 kilometres to go, Pablo Castrillo of Kern-Pharma had tried but without success. A group of 30 riders would reach the final straight to fight it out in a sprint.

The fastest was Romain Grégoire from team Groupama-FDJ, whose victory was confirmed in a photo finish. Mattias Skjelmose (71, LDT) remains in the lead.

Tour de France: the Inside Story

Les Woodland's book Tour de France: The Inside Story - Making the World's Greatest Bicycle Race is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Leguito at 2:30 PM, local time: 16C (62F), cloudy, with the wind from the southwest at 27 km/hr (17 mph). There is a 13% chance of rain.

The route: The stage starts with 25 km of false flat and the climb to Opakua, an ideal pass for a breakaway. Followed by wilderness until the riders cross the finish line for the first time. Nervousness will start to set in during the final part of the circuit, with 3 short but demanding climbs. The last climb is only 8 km from the finish line.

The race: Ide Schelling (Astana Qazaqstan) did not start. With the abandonment of Primoz Roglic and Remco Evenepoel, Mattias Skjelmose is the new GC leader.

There was a terrible crash 35 kilometers from the finish. Jonas Vingegaard, Remco Evenepoel & Primoz Roglic went down. Here is the post from Jonas Vingegaard's team Visma | Lease a Bike:

Team Visma | Lease a Bike lost Jonas Vingegaard in the fourth stage of Itzulia Basque Country. The leader of the Dutch cycling formation was involved in a big crash. The remainder of the race was neutralised by the organisation.

At 35 kilometres before the finish line, things went horribly wrong in the descent of the Olaeta climb. At the front of the peloton, several riders slid straight on at a right-hand bend. Vingegaard crashed hard and had to be taken to hospital by ambulance.

The scene as the race is neutalized.

The remainder of the race was neutralised. Only the six-rider breakaway group was still allowed to battle for the day's victory. Louis Meintjes won the fourth stage.

Sports director Addy Engels: "Over the radio we heard that Jonas was involved in a big crash. We immediately saw that it didn't look good when we arrived to him. Fortunately, he was conscious. Jonas is now being examined at the hospital. We are waiting for any updates now.”

Another shot of Louis Meintjes winning the stage. Organizer's photo

Weather at the finish city of Altsasu at 1:50 PM, local time: 17C (62F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 16 km/hr (10 mph). No rain is forecast.

The route: The longest stage of the 2024 race, with 6 scoring mountain passes. From practically a standstill, the riders will start the climb to Otsondo, a good place for a significant large breakaway to open up the way. The last two climbs may well define the group leading the charge to the finish line.

The race: David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) & Ben Tulett (Visma | Lease a Bike) did not start.

Here's the race organizer's stage three summary:

Ezpeleta awoke to a radiant sun and the best cyclists in the world on its streets. The small town of Iparralde hosted the start of the third stage to Altsasu. At 190 kilometres, it is this year’s longest stage. The cyclists would have to overcome the distance and 6 mountain passes on the route.

After the start there were many breakaway attempts, this stage being important in terms of competition for the mountain jersey. After the summit of Otxondo, a breakaway of three riders formed: Louis Meintjes (121, IWA), Quinten Hermans (202 , ADC) and Filippo Conca (233, Q36). Euskaltel-Euskadi, not happy with the breakaway, put its team to work to neutralise the escapees. The orange team ultimately managed to catch the leading trio. The first hour of the race was very fast, with an average speed of 45.2 kph. Tom Paquot (124, IWA), Alan Jousseaume (145, TEN), Eric Fagundez (226, BBH) and James Fouche (176, EUS) formed the day’s breakaway.

Bora-Hansgrohe controlled the distance, with a maximum margin of 3’30”. The first pass through Altsasu, and the intermediate sprint, were timidly tackled by the breakaway. The pace was upped by UAE Team Emirates, Ineos Grenadiers and Bora-Hansgrohe once the peloton had passed through, with 59 kilometres to go. The three teams wanted to neutralise the breakaway. Within a few kilometres, they had reduced the distance to 45”.

The most critical kilometres of the stage were imminent, with their narrow roads, ups and downs and the last two climbs of the day. Ineos Grenadiers pushed downhill to force the peloton and place its riders at the front. The gap to the escapees had been reduced to 15″. The breakaway was neutralised with 42 kilometres to go, but the pace did not relent. All of the leading teams still fought to lead the peloton, aware that the end of the stage was going to be complicated. There was a lot of stress in the group and a fall happened on one of the corners entering Olaberria involving race leader Primoz Roglic (31, BOH). He was able to resume but lost more than 2 minutes to the peloton. Team Bora-Hansgrohe was soon on hand to accompany Roglic forwards. The peloton continued its drive towards the finish line.

Neither Bora-Hansgrohe nor Roglic relented and reduced the advantage to 55” with 28 kilometres to go. Great work by the team. With 25 kilometres to go, the race leader rejoined the peloton. The Lizarrusti pass and the high pace of Ineos Grenadiers reduced the main group of riders. The mountain jersey was up for grabs and Louis Meintjes upped the pace to pass alone and gain additional points in the mountains classification.

The last kilometres were heart-stopping, with several falls, including one involving Juan Ayuso. Ultimately, Quinten Hermans of Alpecin-Deceuninck took the win in a close sprint.

Melanoma: It Started with a Freckle

David L. Stanley's masterful telling of his bout with skin cancer Melanoma: It Started with a Freckle is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle, on the route, 20 kms form the finish at 2:25 PM, local time: 18C (65F), fair, with the wind from the south at 23 km/hr (14 mph). There is a 22% chance of rain.

The route: The race enters France during a stage on very tricky terrain. There is only one scoring pass, but the roads are constantly up and down. Including narrow sections where the peloton will have to fight for position. It could be the stage for the breakaway.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage two summary.

After several years’ absence, the Itzulia returned to Iparralde for the second stage between Irun and Kanbo. Although the stage only has one mountain pass, 160 kilometres of constant ups and downs awaited the riders. A sunny start to the day in Irun saw all of the riders still in the race take to the starting line.

The day’s breakaway formed almost immediately at kilometre 7, comprised of Alexis Vuillermoz (147, TEN), Enekoitz Azparren (177, EUS), Ivan Cobo (193, EKP), Jetse Bol (227, BBH) and Xabier Azparren (231, Q36). The group of 5 riders pushed on towards the finish line in Kanbo at a good pace with a maximum margin of 3’40” over the peloton.

Ivan Cobo (193, EKP) subsequently lost contact with the leaders at kilometre 70. The trailing peloton was led by team Bora-Hansgrohe, which worked constantly to support its leader. The Azparren brothers, Bol and Vuillermoz kept the gap at about 3 minutes. With 60 kilometres to go, Ineos Grenadiers put its men to work to close the gap with the breakaway. The race became tougher with more ups and downs. Areas with very narrow roads where everyone wanted to lead.

As the kilometres passed, it became clear that the peloton wanted to sprint. With 25 kilometres to go, the escapees maintained a 45’’ lead. 13 kilometres out from the finish, the 4 escapees were neutralised by the peloton. The final kilometres were very fast as the riders competed for the intermediate sprint points and given the importance of good position for the last 3 kilometres of the stage.

After a very close sprint, Paul Lapeira (186, DAT) took the win.

Stage 1 map & profile

Primoz Roglic on his way to winning the stage and being the first GC leader.

Story of the Giro d'Italia, volume 1

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Giro d'Italia, A Year-by-Year History of the Tour of Italy, Vol 1: 1909 - 1970 is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the race city of Irun at 1:40 PM, local time: 17C (63F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the southwest at 29 km/hr (18 mph). There is a 15% chance of rain. Late in the race it did rain at the finish.

The route: The time trial returns to the Itzulia during a short and not very demanding stage but with several steep climbs. The first leg will be vital to get off to a good start and set a good pace. There is a short, cobbled section with a 10% gradient right at the start. That should separate the wheat from the chaff. After several ups and downs, begins the only ascent of the stage, with an elevation of 1.7km at 5.2% that will have to be ridden flat out. From there, the race crosses the length of the Olaberria neighbourhood downhill until the ramp up to the town hall square. The favourites are expected to be close, barring any surprises.

The race: First rider scheduled to start was Damien Howsen (Q36.5) at 2:10.

Thomas Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers) did not start.

Here is the race organizer's report.

After a year of waiting, the Itzulia is finally rolling again. In its centenary edition, the race started with a 10km individual time trial, with both start and finish lines located in Irun.

The day dawned sunny, cloudy and threatening rain in the afternoon. The favourites in the general classification decided to start early to avoid the potential rainfall. Before the race, Thomas Pidcock (166, IGD) had suffered a fall during the reconnaissance lap which ruled him out of the starting lineup.

As the riders began to flow through the streets of Irun, their times were soon smashed by the favourites. Pello Bilbao (111, TBV) set the best time, but Juan Ayuso (101, UAD) stole first place by 9 seconds soon after. Behind, Primoz Roglic (31, BOH) and Jonas Vingegaard (1, TVL) started their races. The double winner of the Itzulia was on fire, overcoming the Spaniard by 19 seconds, despite a mistake at the entrance to the finish, a great time for the Slovenian.

Defending champion Vingegaard was 18 seconds behind. Stage favourites included Mattias Skjelmose (71, LDT) and Remco Evenepoel (21, SOQ), the reigning world time trial champion who started the Itzulia in the rainbow jersey, and whose wheel lost grip in the second corner, going to ground and losing time, but was able to continue. Ultimately losing 11 seconds to the virtual leader. The Lidl-Trek rider took the second fastest provisional time at the finish line ahead of Evenepoel.

The riders continued to arrive at the finish, but none managed to beat the best time. Where, despite the confusion, Roglic took the best provisional time.

Jay Vine managed to take second place at the finish just 7 seconds behind Roglic.

At the end of the first stage, Primoz Roglic is the overall race leader, with his main competitors close behind. Tomorrow sees the first online stage, starting in Irun and finishing in Kanbo.
