Dirty Feet: Early days of the Tour de France

Les Woodland's book Dirty Feet: How the Great Unwashed Created the Tour de France is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Matosinhos at 1:15 PM, local time: 14C (58F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 8 km/hr (5 mph). No rain is forecast.

The stage: O Gran Camiño will start its 2025 edition with an international leap. The first stage outside our borders will take us to Portugal, following the Pilgrims’ Roads to Santiago, to vindicate the social, cultural and, above all, sporting links with our neighbouring country. The route will start and finish in the District of Porto, between Maia and Matosinhos.

The race: Here's the report from fifth-place Jordi Warlop's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

The fourth edition of O Gran Camiño, Galicia’s most important race, got underway this year from Portugal, with a 189.7km stage between Maia and Matosinhos. It was a pretty straightforward day, without any important obstacles for the peloton, who was determined to have a bunch sprint at the finish.

Soudal Quick-Step, who came to the start with seven riders – three racing for the World Tour team and four for the Devo squad – was prominent from the beginning of the stage, controlling the gap of the six escapees. Our youngsters put in a huge amount of work at the front of the peloton, bringing back both the original breakaway as well as the one that formed later, inside the last hour of the race.

Ten kilometers from the line, the peloton was again as one, and on the finishing straight, last year’s Piccolo Lombardia runner-up Federico Savino piloted Jordi Warlop through the field, helping the Belgian score a solid top five on the stage won by Magnus Cort (Uno X-Mobility).

Complete results:

189.7 kilometers raced at an average speed of 43.977 km/hr
