Weather at the finish city of Uraidla at 11:25 AM, local time: 19C (66F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 11 km/hr (6 mph). There is a 60% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage three summary.

Movistar’s Javier Romo’s maiden WorldTour victory stunned the favourites at the Santos Tour Down Under at the Uraidla finish line on Thursday.

The 26-year-old Spaniard conquered the efex men’s stage 3 and powered to victory over the Pound Road, Knotts Hill climb which made its debut and was the most talked about stage of the 25th anniversary of the coveted race.

It's time to race. Stage 3 gets going.

“I’m very happy, this morning I cannot imagine this day but I worked from September for this race,’’ Romo said. “My team had a lot of confidence in me, and they worked very well to help me.

“The position today was very important and in the final (to the finish line) I had very good legs and everything was perfect.”

Romo’s solo attack five kilometerrs from the finish line saw him wrestle the Santos ochre leader’s jersey from Australian sprint king Sam Welsford.

The West Australian road and track star owned the leader’s jersey for the first two stages but kept the Ziptrak sprint jersey ahead of Friday's Hahn Stage 4, Glenelg to Victor Harbor

UAE Team Emirates – XRG’s Jhonatan Narvaez finished third ahead of Finn Fisher-Black (Red Bull – BORA – Hansgrohe) across the finish line at Uraidla.

Weather at the start/finish city of Stirling at 11:30 PM, local time: 32C (90F), with the wind from the northwest at 11 km/hr (7 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Chloé Dygert's Team Canyon-SRAM zondacrypto.

Chloé Dygert teased riders and spectators alike with flashes of her phenomenal power in the previous days of racing, but today, the American dual-disciplinary superstar put it all on display in the third and final stage of the Tour Down Under.

After a superb lead-out into the final 300 metres from Neve Bradbury, combined with key assistance from Alice Towers in the preceding two kilometres, Dygert rocketed away the peloton and blasted effortlessly up the final leg-sapping drag, distancing any possible challengers with every stomp on the pedals.

Dygert crossed the finish line victorious for the first time in a road race since her triumph at the USA National Road Championships in June 2023. She immediately credited her teammates for their belief, hard work, and flawless execution of the team strategy.

“Heading into the stage, we wanted to make it as hard as possible, but honestly, there wasn’t really much action going on during the whole race. It was a bit frustrating because there were so many riders still in the peloton the whole time. Going into the final lap, that’s when we wanted to have the numbers, and that’s when we wanted to make it tough, so everybody put an effort into this win. Having Alice and Neve there for that final little bit before my launch, it was exactly the plan, and I’m really happy to pull off one of our goals here, to achieve a victory.”

Stage 3 gets underway.

While the first three laps of today’s 20 kilometre Stirling circuit were ridden at a high pace, much of the aggression came from the hotly contested Queen of the Mountain and sprint points, rather than any real strategic play. A solo breakaway rider kept things from escalating for much of the middle part of the stage, with the team quick to cover any spontaneous digs or throwaway attacks.

As the laps ticked down and the peloton regrouped, the intensity went up, and the attacks became more deliberate and determined.

Along with Lidl-Trek, who appeared to share similar ambitions of creating an attritional race, Tiffany Cromwell and Maike van der Duin went into combat mode during the final lap, firing off the front and forcing others teams to chase and expend resources.

Maike put in a brilliant dig to forge ahead solo, leading until the final 10 kilometres with a maximum advantage of 30 seconds. As the race approached the final seven kilometres of gradual climbing toward the finish, other teams took control of the pace, pushing the race toward a bunch sprint.

Neve initiated a strong tempo with two kilometres to go, and after a brief lull in pace, Alice took over within the final kilometre. Neve then returned to the front for one last, crucial pull, setting Chloé up perfectly for her spectacular launch. The enormous wattage surging through her trademark pink shoes evident for all to see.

Dygert reflected on the tension of these final moments:
“It’s funny because I was really jittery going into the final kilometre, I’m like, why aren’t we going faster? Why aren’t we going faster? And I was getting a little nervous. I was thinking to myself, everybody’s recovering right now and I’m gonna get passed, so I’m really, really happy that I stayed patient, calm and attacked when I did, because it was just planned perfectly.”

The win is as much a personal triumph as it is a public one for Dygert, who faced significant challenges in unlocking her peak performance and meeting her own sky-high standards in 2024. Despite claiming an Olympic gold in the team pursuit, a bronze medal in the Olympic time trial, and two medals at the Zurich UCI Road World Championships, she struggled to reach the level she had set for herself.

“This victory has boosted my confidence in many ways because I know now that I’m not playing catch up. I feel like I’m at the level that I should be at this point in the season. It’s still early, but it’s where I should be after not having any recent injuries. Going into the spring, it’s only going to get better and better. I won’t be playing catch-up, so I won’t be risking injury because I don’t need to push the limits. Now, I’m right where everybody else is, at the same percentage level. It’s just safer for me physically, that I’m not going to be hurting myself by trying to make up for lost time.”

With her Australian training camp already deemed a success, Chloé is now focused on the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race in two weeks’ time, a key target as she progresses toward peak form for her major goals this spring.

Saturday, January 18: Stage 2, Unley - Willunga Hill, 115 km

Stage 2 map & profile

Noemi Rüegg wins the stage and is the new GC leader.

Why Your Bike is Made in Asia

Bill McGann’s book Why Your Bike Is Made in Asia: My career in bicycles as I watched two continents squander an industry is available in print, Kindle eBook & Audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the city of Willunga, on the route, 5 kms from the finish, at 11:40 AM, local time: 29C (85F), sunny, with the wind from the north at 10 km/hr (6 mph). The temperature is forecast to climb to 31C (88F) at 2:00. No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from winner Noemi Rüegg's Team EF Education-Oatly:

Noemi Rüegg won stage 2 of the Tour Down Under after a brilliantly timed attack with 400 meters to go of the queen stage and moved into the overall lead of the race. As the Swiss champion crossed the line atop the infamous Willunga Hill, she had time to let it all soak in and savor the moment.

“I am super happy, and I still can’t really believe what happened today,” Noemi said. “We went into the race with this goal—that we would win this stage with either Kim or me. But to really finish it off is crazy. It feels really good.”

Unlike last year, when Noemi opened her season with a victory on the first day of racing at the Trofeo Felanitx, this year she waited until her second day of competition to secure her first win.

After a few cooler days down in South Australia, the habitual summer heat returned today as the riders prepared to take on the 115 kilometer stage. The team came into the Tour Down Under with a plan: to go all in for Noemi knowing that stage 2 was perfectly suited for her. Today, the squad did just that.

Women's stage 2 gets underway.

Covering moves and driving the pace in the peloton from the very beginning, the team guided Noemi perfectly to the base of the first ascent up Willunga. With a fierce pace being set by her competitors, all Noemi had to do was follow those moves and keep her composure. After the first ascent of the climb, both Kim Cadzow and Noemi had made it into the lead group.

Attacks started to come quickly from the teams with multiple riders in the pack. Kim covered several of those moves brilliantly and neutralized the group going into the town of Willunga. After a late attack from Chloe Dyggert (CSR) right before the base of the climb, the pace once again ramped up and Kim navigated Noemi to the front of the group to get her ready for the final leg of the race.

Noemi had to work hard, right from the beginning after an attack saw a small gap open up between her and two riders.

“I knew the beginning of the climb was the hardest part for me because it’s the steepest part, so I knew I just had to do my own pace and try to close this gap in my own rhythm, which I did. And then I just tried to save energy,” said Noemi after the stage.

With the group now back together, Noemi navigated to the front and followed numerous more moves all the way up the climb.

“There were a lot of attacks going on, which I had to follow. The group got smaller and smaller, and then at one point, we were only two left. She attacked, and I just followed her, and then I went by myself. At first, I thought, ‘Oh no, this was too early; I can’t keep going like this,’ but then I looked back, and I had a gap, so I had no other choice. I just had to keep going and was able to keep it to the line.”

Noemi crossed crested Willunga ten seconds ahead of the next closest rival and moved into the overall lead of the race.

She will go into the final stage of the Tour Down Under with a fifteen second lead to defend in her lead of the Tour Down Under’s Ochre leader’s jersey. But Noemi knows she can trust her teammates to do everything they can for her.

“Tomorrow is going to be a really hard stage,” Noemi said. “It’s also going to be super hot again, so I think we just have to stay calm and in control, and follow big breakaways. The stage should suit me really well. It’s always up and down with no rest, so I’ll try to just keep staying with my team. I think we have it under control. We proved that we’re really a strong team, and if we stick together, we can do great things.”

Weather at the finish city of Aldinga Beach at 11:00 AM, local time: 23C (74F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the east at 18 km/hr (11 mph). The temperature is expected to climb to 26C (79F) by 2:00 PM. No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage 1 report:

It was Daniek Hengeveld’s moment of truth when she bravely rode solo to claim her most important UCI Women’s WorldTour victory at Aldinga on Friday.

Hengeveld, 22, claimed the 101.9-kilometre Ziptrak Women’s Stage 1 from Brighton to Aldinga after an unexpected solo to the end stunned the peloton about 50km from the finish.

The Dutch rider admitted doubt had consumed her thoughts as to whether she would return to bike racing after a horrendous crash at the Tour of Britain last June.

Hengeveld broke her jaw, her collarbone and fractured several ribs in the crash.

She said nerves had set in before making her debut for new Ceratizit-WNT team who joined her at the podium to celebrate the shock win on Friday.

“This is so different because it’s my first race after my crash last year on a new team and I lost a little bit of confidence after last year,’’ Hengeveld said.

“I was finally racing like I was 18 and I thought this is why I race.

“I struggled a lot, especially with the mental part of it.

“I could train and enjoy it.

“It was hard to see if I actually still like to ride my bike and how it is to ride with a team that believes in me.

“It’s nice. It’s a good feeling.”

Hengeveld claimed the stage win and holds a 43-second gap over last year’s Ziptrak Stage 1 winner: New Zealand’s Ally Wallston (FDJ-Suez).

Human Powered Health’s Kathrin Schweinberger was on the podium 45 seconds behind Hengeveld.

The 2025 bike racing season is officially underway.

Hengeveld admitted she could struggle to tackle Willunga Hill twice in Saturday’s Health Partners Stage 2, but remained optimistic that her team would stay aggressive in a bid to cause further shocks during the opening Women’s WorldTour race of the year.

“They will help me, I will help them,’’ Hengeveld said.

“I’m not a typical climber so we will see if I can stay in the lead; otherwise I’ll give it to one of my teammates. We just want to be aggressive again and hopefully it works out.

“I did Willunga Hill a few times in my training…I will see.

“I just want to race like a family. It’s small team; I really enjoy the time with them and have fun and get wins.”

Hengeveld takes control of the Santos Ochre Leader’s jersey and the Ziptrak points classification.

She is flanked by ARA Australian Cycling Team’s Alyssa Polites who will wear the efex Queen of the Mountain jersey and lead the Zwift Young Rider classification.

“It’s definitely boosted my confidence,’’ Polites said. It’s come at a good time and I’m enjoying the experience on home roads. I had a bit of a crack and it’s OK.”

The race: Here's the report from winner Sam Welsford's Team Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe.

Sam Welsford continues his sensational start to the 2025 season. A week after taking the Australian Criterium Championship title, he came out firing at the Villawood Classic in Adelaide, Australia, clinching the first international win of the year for Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe. With a mix of strength and smart positioning, Sam led the team to a perfect outcome on the high-speed circuit.

The team played a crucial role in today's victory, with Sam’s teammates controlling the race at the front for several laps. Their effort to set the pace and bring proceedings back together in the closing stages ensured Sam was perfectly positioned for the sprint. On the finishing stretch, the 28-year-old from Perth kept his cool and powered through, taking the win in his national champion's colours.

Sam Welsford:
We took control of the race quite early. We knew we had to be at the front as all teams looked to us to do the work. We made sure to keep the break in check and didn't let them get too far out, which took up quite a bit of our energy. With three or four laps to go, some other teams came over the top of us, but we kept our cool. We're really happy to have taken the win. Hats off to all the boys, they did a massive job to keep everything in check. It would have been quite tough otherwise, so thank you very much to the team.
