Weather at the race city of Carpi at 12:45 PM, local time: 22C (72F), fair, with the wind from the east at 29 km/hr (18 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from GC winner Mauro Schmid's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Mauro Schmid became the first Swiss rider to add his name to the roll of honour at the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali, wrapping up the general classification of the 38th edition thanks to a rock-solid display on the stage 5 individual time trial in Carpi, won by teammate Rémi Cavagna.

It’s the second stage race success in the career of the 23-year-old from Bülach, and it follows the one he took last year at the Belgium Tour, in his first season with the Wolfpack. Schmid enjoyed an excellent week in Italy, showing amazing consistency over the event’s five stages, concluding every single one of these in the top 10, so it came as no surprise that in addition to the GC win, he also received the points jersey.

“It feels special that my first win of the year came in the form of a stage race. I wasn’t sure I could survive the climb, but I went better than expected. Two stages and the GC – we couldn’t be happier!”, Mauro said after delivering the team’s 17th victory of the season. “I suffered a bit today, because I went too hard in the middle part and this made me nervous, but I calmed down near the finish because in the end I had quite some seconds left in the overall standings. It was a hard week, but we can be proud of how we rode as a team.”

Rémi Cavagna capped off Soudal Quick-Step’s great outing at Coppi e Bartali the same way he started the whole thing, with a victory. After attacking from the peloton and producing an outstanding solo effort to capture the opening stage, the “TGV of Clermont-Ferrand” now took the spoils in the time trial, where nothing and no one could stop him from racking up his tenth pro victory.

“We are all super happy with how things went for us this week! This time trial was my biggest goal here. It was a technical course, but I didn’t take any risks and just pushed hard on the straight roads so I could gain seconds there. I’m delighted with this performance, which netted my first ITT victory of the season after that close second in Algarve. The fact that Mauro finished first in the GC is the cherry on the cake. I feel the form is there and now I look forward to Pais Vasco”, said Rémi, the only rider to average more than 50km/h in Saturday’s time trial.

Weather at the start/finish city of Fiorano Modenese at 12:40 PM, local time: 19C (66F), sunny, with the wind from the southwest at 18 km/hr (11 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Today's route was shortened by 8.7 km. There is only one local lap in Fiorano Modenese instead of two.

Here's the report from GC leader Mauro Schmid's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Mauro Schmid showcased again his remarkable consistency, racking up a third runner-up spot in four days of racing at the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali after another strong ride on the hardest day of the week, which took in seven climbs for more than 2500 vertical meters.

A numerous group animated the day, opening up a gap of three minutes on the peloton where Soudal Quick-Step made sure of setting a steady tempo that didn’t allow the move to become dangerous. The likes of James Knox and Stan Van Tricht buried themselves for Schmid – who remained out of the wind until the penultimate hill – bringing back the escapees one by one.

An injection of pace followed by a series of sharp attacks with 15 kilometers to go led to a strong chasing group being formed behind lone leader Alexis Guerin (Bingoal). Mauro Schmid showed there is a reason why he is wearing the leader’s jersey, responding with ease and joining this move that came very close to bringing back Guerin, who in the end made it for a mere three seconds.

Second on the stage meant more valuable bonifications for our rider, who enters the final day ITT with a margin of 14 seconds over James Shaw (EF Education-EasyPost). A strong time trialist – gold medalist in the discipline with the team relay at last year’s Worlds – Schmid will look to put in another solid ride and seal what would be the second GC success of his career.

“The whole team did a great job the whole day. We had a tough climb in the beginning and an 18-ma breakaway, so we had to chase full gas as nobody helped. In the end I just had to make sure that I didn’t lose too much time. I think I had quite good legs, I wanted to try to win the stage but it was a bit risky as I had two EF guys with me. If I pulled too hard and I lost time it could have been difficult for the last stage, so I just focused instead on taking the bonus seconds. Saturday’s time trial is flat, quite technical, but nothing too crazy, so I can be confident about my chances”, Schmid explained after the stage.

Thursday, March 23: Stage 3, Forli - Forli, 139.7 km

Tour de France: 2020

Bill & Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, 2020: The Tour During Covid-19, Better Late Than Never is available in both Kindle eBook and Audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the start/finish city of Forli at 1:10 PM, local time: 21C (70F), sunny, with the wind from the northwest at 2 km/hr (1 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from GC leader Mauro Schmid's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Mauro Schmid defended his overall lead at this week’s Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali, after a complicated stage 3 which took the peloton to Forli – the town of Caterina Sforza, one of Renaissance Italy’s most influential and powerful women.

Monte Cavallo (4.7km, 7.2%) with its tricky gravel roads sections was the day’s main attraction, the hardest climb on a circuit that the peloton had to tackle several times. It was there with 20 kilometers to go that three riders jumped clear, just as the gradient stiffened, opening a hefty gap over the stretched-out peloton. Mauro found himself part of the reduced chasing group, taking some long pulls on the descent to claw back time as the leading trio was driving hard to expand their advantage.

An old-school finish, on the Forli velodrome, awaited the riders at the end of Thursday’s 140 kilometers, and it was Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) who prevailed there, 25 seconds clear of the chasers. Schmid concluded in fifth place, enough to keep the leader’s jersey ahead of the penultimate stage – in addition to the points one – and even increase his lead over the next rider in the general classification to eight seconds.

Weather at the finish city of Longiano at 12:45 PM, local time: 16C (61F), sunny, with the wind from the east at 11 km/hr (7 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from new GC leader Mauro Schmid's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Mauro Schmid took over the leader’s jersey in Italy from teammate Rémi Cavagna, after another podium finish, this time on the aptly named “Muur di Belvedere” – the 800m climb averaging 11% which awaited the peloton in Longione, at the end of the 172.5km stage 2.

The race was shaped by the penultimate ascent, where a strong group containing the 23-year-old Mauro Schmid set off in pursuit of the breakaway. Featuring many GC riders, that move easily reeled in the escapees and continued to push a strong pace that soon turned into an insurmountable lead for the chasers, who had to say goodbye to their hopes for the stage.

Two kilometers from the finish, things started heating up, attacks coming left and right, and one rider managed to snap the elastic. At the one kilometer to go mark, he had a gap of 18 seconds, but Mauro Schmid rode admirably behind, throwing any caution to the wind to bring back the lone leader and remain in contention for the victory. The Swiss made the catch with 200 meters to go, and despite the gargantuesque effort, he could still finish on the podium, just behind Sean Quinn (EF Education-EasyPost), a result that elevated Mauro to the top of the standings.

“When the attacks came, I just followed and stayed in the wheels, as Rémi was still in the bunch. I began pulling once I heard he got dropped and had my eyes on the stage win, but then Brambilla attacked and the group stopped working. Nevertheless, I pulled hard to close the gap, but then I maybe waited a bit more to start my sprint. On the other hand, I took the leader’s jersey, and even though the margin is small, I will try my best to keep it, especially as the final stage time trial suits me”, said Mauro – the fourth different Soudal Quick-Step rider to lead a stage race this year.

Tuesday, March 21: Stage 1, Riccone - Riccone, 161.8 km

Paris–Roubaix: The Inside Story

Les Woodland's book Paris-Roubaix: The Inside Story - All the bumps of cycling's cobbled classic is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the start/finish city of Riccone at 12:40 PM, local time: 15C (59F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the north at 14 km/hr (9 mph). There is just a 2% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from winner Remi Cavagna's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Rémi Cavagna soloed to a spectacular victory on stage 1 of Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali, after displaying his strength on the hilly parcours around Riccione. His move was launched 37 kilometers from the finish, just as the peloton was preparing to tackle the Montescudo climb (6.6km, 3.7%) for the second and last time Tuesday afternoon.

Cavagna rode away from the bunch, picked up the remnants of the breakaway, and showing effortless power opened an impressive 1:40 gap by the time he crested the summit. Using his superb time trial skills, the “TGV of Clermont-Ferrand” flew down the descent, and entered the last ten kilometers with a full minute in his hands.

Despite the chasers getting organised behind him and further reducing his buffer on the flat roads of Riccione, nothing and no one could stop Rémi from taking the ninth pro win of his career, and a well-deserved one for that matter after a challenging 2022 season. The peloton arrived around half a minute later, and Mauro Schmid finished runner-up, making it a memorable 1-2 for Soudal Quick-Step.

“Coming into the race, the plan was to ride every stage as a one-day race. My goal at the start of the day was to try something in the last ten kilometers, but I sensed an opportunity on that final climb and just followed my instinct. Once I got a gap, I tried to keep the power and went all-in for the victory, as this really motivated me.”

“Having had a good start to the season I was confident at the start of the race, and this win will be a huge morale-boost. I’m happy for myself and I’m happy for Mauro too. We are good friends, and just the other day we were talking about trying to do something nice this week, so it was special to be joined by him on the podium. We have our win and now we’ll see what the next stages will bring”, added the first Frenchman in six years to take a stage at Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali.
