Tour of Flanders, the Inside Story

The Race: It was a stage of pure aggression, with breaks escaping and getting caught. The final escape wasn't reeled in until after the final lap had begun.

The sprint for the stage win was a race between Marcel Kittel and Mark Cavendish. So far this season Kittel has been the faster finisher and today it was no different, with Kittel winning the Tour of Britain's final stage by a half-length.

Race leader Dylan van Baarle emerged from the morning's time trial still at the top of the standings. He finished 29th in the final stage to win the 2014 Tour of Britain. Not only is this van Baarle's first professional win, I believe it is his first trip to the final podium of a professional race.

Michal Kwiatkowski was second overall, 10 seconds behind van Baarle.

Sunday, September 14: Stage 8a, London 8.8 km individual time trial

Stage 8a map |

Tour de France: the Inside Story

The Race: Sir Bradley Wiggins won the Tour of Britain's penultimate stage, an 8.8 km individual time trial on the streets of London. But, because he had lost so much time earlier in the race (he was down 47 seconds in the GC), capturing the lead with such a short time trial was always going to be unlikely.

Race leader Dylan van Baarle finished 11th, 25 seconds slower than Wiggins. More importantly, he lost only nine seconds to second-place Michal Kwiatkowski, allowing him to retain the race lead, now down to ten seconds over Kwiatkowski.

There remains the afternoon's 88.8 km London circuit race and barring catastrophe, van Baarle should retain his lead. This would be especially true if Kwiatkowski is called on to help teammate Mark Cavendish win the final sprint.

Tour de France: the Inside Story

The Race: Again, an early break decided the race. Five riders slipped their leashes and half-way through the stage, they had a lead of about nine minutes. And like yesterday, efforts to bring back the break came too late and was done with insufficient force.

Julien Vermote left his breakaway companions behind on the first category Ditchling Beacon ascent. That was it. He was gone. Vermote won the stage.

Two other members of the break survived as well, Ignatas Konovalovas and Dylan Van Baarle. They followed Vermote to the line 23 seconds later.

Former race leader Michal Kwiatkowski led in the 17 remaining members of the peloton 1 minute, 23 seconds later. That was enough time to make Van Baarle the new overall leader.

Tomorrow is a split stage day with an 8.8 km individual time trial in the morning. Less than a minute separates the top ten GC men with Bradley Wiggins sitting in 7th place, 47 seconds down. Should be interesting.

Stage 6 map |

The Race: Just like yesterday, the peloton let a quality break get away and then waited too long to shut it down. And when the attempt to close the gap was made, the chase lacked fervor.

Alex Dowsett (Movistar), Matthias Brandle (IAM Cycling) and Thomas Stewart (Madison-Genesis) took off when the stage was 50 kilometers old. The trio managed to get five minutes up the road. It was strange that a break with Alex Dowsett, only 1min 25sec down on GC and a good rider, was allowed to get away.

When race leader Michel Kwiatkowski's Omega Pharma team finally tried to catch the trio, they just couldn't.

Near the end, Matthias Brandle again scooted away to win his second stage in a row. Dowsett's reward for a day of hard riding is the GC lead.

Paris–Roubaix: The Inside Story

The Race: An important part of stage racing tactics is deciding how much energy to expend corralling an opponent and when to do it. Today, the big teams got it wrong.

A five-man break was never allowed to go too far down the road, but the decision to make the actual catch was made too late.

From the break, Austrian rider Matthias Brandle escaped and rode up the final ascent and downhill to the finish in Exeter, finishing alone. Behind him two other riders from the day's break, Shane Archbold and Maarten Wynants also made it to the line without being caught. The chasing pack came in fourteen seconds after Brandle had won the stage.

Michal Kwiatkowski finished in the main peloton to preserve his three-seconds lead in the GC over Edoardo Zanini.

Stage 4 map |

Story of the Giro d'Italia, volume 1

The Race: Albert Timmer (Giant-Shimano) had remained off the front after the rest of the day's break had been absorbed. The finale was an uphill in Bristol and there Jack Bauer (Garmin-Sharp) bridged up to Timmer.

But Omega Pharma rider Michel Kwiatkowski is currently enjoying splendid form and used that good condition to catch and pass the pair and win the stage.

Going into the stage Kwiatkowski had been in second place, 13 seconds behind GC leader Edoardo Zardini. Zardini was on the wrong side of a split in the peloton, finishing 19th, six seconds behind Kwiatkowski. With Kwiatkowski's 10-second stage winning bonification, he now leads the Tour of Britain, three seconds ahead of Zardini.

Tuesday, September 9: Stage 3, Newtown - The Tumble (hilltop finish), 179.9 km (119.9 miles)

Stage 3 map |

The Race: Today the Tour of Britain was again in Wales. The day's decider was hilltop finish at The Tumble, a 4 km ascent averaging 6.2% gradient.

Story of the Tour de France Volume 2

Tinkoff-Saxo rider Manuele Boaro was the last rider from the day's break that was still off the front, and he was caught as the race approached The Tumble.

Jack Bauer (Garmin-Sharp) was the first to try his luck as the hill began to rear upwards. He was quickly joined by Edoardo Zardini (Bardiani-CSF), who had earlier in the year won a stage at the Giro del Trentino. Bauer was soon shelled by Zardini.

Nicolas Roche (Tinkoff-Saxo) bridged and was ahead of the Italian for a short while, but the Bardiani rider dug deep and was able to drop Roche and head for the line alone. Then Michal Kwiatkowski showed up and passed Roche, but could only come within nine seconds of Zardini.

Zardini accomplished the double coup. He won both the stage and the GC leadership. Zardini made it clear in post-race comments that he intends to defend his lead and emerge on September 14th the 2014 Tour of Britain winner.

Monday, September 8: Stage 2, Knowsley - Llandudno, 200.8 km

The Race: The day's break of six was never allowed much rope and was caught well before the stage finish. After they had been absorbed, Michel Kwiatkowski tried his luck, but he too was chased down, setting things up for a big sprint.

The day was won by Omega Pharma rider Mark Renshaw, who normally has lead-out duty for Mark Cavendish. But since Cavendish crashed badly enough yesterday to warrant a trip to the hospital to make sure he was OK, Renshaw was Omega Pharma's man to go for the stage win.

Renshaw did not waste the opportunity, winning not only the stage but the overall leadership. Yesterday's winner and GC leader, Marcel Kittel, didn't make the front group, finishing 99th, more than 3 minutes behind Renshaw.

Sunday, September 7: Stage 1, Liverpool Circuit Race, 104.8 km (8 laps of 13.1 km)

Stage 1 map |

Tour of Flanders, the Inside Story

The Race: After the breakaways had been absorbed by the fast-moving peloton, nearly the entire peloton was together for the sprint for the stage win at the end of eight laps of the Liverpool circuit.

Marcel Kittel won his first race since taking the final stage of the Tour de France on the Champs Elysées and becomes the race leader by one second over Sonny Colbrelli. This was Kittel's eleventh race win this season.

Colbrelli had accumulated time bonifications while out on a break.

Mark Cavendish's luck doesn't seem to want to improve. He crashed, but was still able to finish third. After the race he was taken to a hospital for examination.
