Tour of Flanders, the Inside Story

Les Woodland's book Tour of Flanders: The Inside Story - The rocky roads of the Ronde van Vlaanderen is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Geraardsbergen at 2:00 PM, local time: 31C (87F), fair, with the wind from the east-southeast at 10 km/hr (6 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Mathieu van de Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) injured his knee in stage 4 and did not start. Dusan Rajovic (Bahrain Victorious) also did not start. Midway in the stage Mick Van Dijke (Visma | Lease a Bike) abandoned.

Here's the race report from stage winner Arnaud De Lie's Team Lotto Dstny:

Arnaud De Lie finished off the almost perfect week for the Lotto Dstny Team with a win in the queen stage of the Renewi Tour, in Geraardsbergen. Alec Segaert showed his great form once again and became second in the GC, remaining the best young rider.

Alec Segaert started the last stage of the Renewi Tour in the leader’s jersey, but with small margins it was promised to be a nervous and hard stage. 21 riders took part in the early breakaway, with among them Brent Van Moer for Lotto Dstny. With 26 kilometers to go, the break got taken back. On the second climb of the iconic Muur Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates) attacked and Arnaud De Lie followed. After the Bosberg 5 other riders joined the leading duo. In the group behind Alec Segaert kept pushing hard to defend his leader’s jersey.

An early attack of 21 riders.

On the Denderoodberg De Lie and Wellens rode away once again, going to a sprint with two on the cobbled finish in Geraardsbergen. De Lie won easily in front of Wellens, who took home the general classification before Segaert, who left it all out there today.

After winning the Tour of Denmark, the Belgian champion could raise his arms for the first time in his jersey: “It’s super special to win here in this jersey in Geraardsbergen. I felt very strong but the first goal was to defend the GC of Alec. It was my job to follow and there I also took away some boni seconds. Tim Wellens was really strong as well and with the weather it was even harder. I didn’t wait for the sprint, but I chose my moment and won. Alec becomes second in the GC in the end, which still makes a very successful week for the team.”

Alec Segaert finished the week as second in the GC, taking home the youth jersey. After winning his first WorldTour stage and riding in the leader’s jersey for four days, Segaert looks back satisfied: “We expected the chaos and tried to control. It wasn’t a bad situation with the big breakaway and Brent being part of it. They didn’t get a very big advantage, so I was quite confident we would take them back. In the end it was very hard, I can handle the warm weather quite well so that was good. Until the last time the Muur I felt strong, I came up there as fifth. In our group it was difficult to get it organised, in the end Tim wins the GC for the fourth time. It has been a fantastic week in any case and I will definitely come back and try again in the future.”

Paris–Roubaix: The Inside Story

Weather at the finish city of Aalter at 2:20 PM, local time: 23C (74F), sunny, with the wind from the northeast at 19 km/hr (12 kmh). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The race: Alex Edmondson (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL) did not start. After crashing Petr Kelemen (Tudor Pro Cycling) & Manlio Moro (Movistar) abandoned. Later Sam Bennett (Decathlon Ag2r La Mondiale), Oliver Knight (Cofidis) & Fabio Jakobsen (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL) quit the race.

Here's the stage 4 report from second-place Christophe Laporte's Team Visma | Lease a Bike:

Christophe Laporte just missed out on victory in the fourth stage of the Renewi Tour. The 31-year-old Frenchman sprinted to second place behind stage winner Jasper Philipsen. Thanks to the bonification seconds gained, Laporte moved up to fifth place in the general classification.

The wind made for a nervous start to the stage. Mick van Dijke, Tiesj Benoot, Per Strand Hagenes and Laporte were alert and were part of the first echelon group. However, everything came together again and although several leading groups tried to surprise the sprinters' teams, a bunch sprint was inevitable.

Laporte was well-positioned and sprinted to second place. "The team did a great job and dropped me off in a good position. I was in Jasper's wheel and that turned out to be a good choice. In the sprint, he was simply too fast", Laporte said.

Mick van Dijke crashed in the final kilometre and reached the finish with some scratches. "Per, Christophe and I were well in front in the last kilometres. The moment I wanted to go on, I was crashed. Fortunately Christophe made up for the day with a nice second place", Van Dijke said.

Tomorrow, the Renewi Tour ends with a gruelling stage to Geraardsbergen. Laporte is looking forward to it with a lot of confidence. "I hope I have the legs to go for the stage win. The course suits me, so if I feel good, I hope to show something great."

Jonathan Milan wins stage 3.

Cycling's 50 Triumphs and Tragedies

Les Woodland's book Cycling's 50 Triumphs and Tragedies: The rise and fall of bicycle racing's champions is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Ardooie at 1:50 PM, local time: 22C (72F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the northeast at 16 km/hr (10 mph). There is a 1% chance of rain, growing to 21% at 5:00 PM.

The race: Tim Merlier (Soudal Quick-Step) did not start.

Here's the race report from stage winner Jonathan Milan's Team Lidl-Trek:

There is no end to Jonathan Milan and Lidl-Trek’s hunger for victory. In the third stage of Renewi Tour (185km-long from Blankenberge to Ardooie) the ‘Bull of Buja’ laid down the law once again, leaving Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Walscheid (Jayco-Alula) in his wake.

At the start of the stage.

"We are really happy. I was really looking forward to doing another nice result, to win a sprint in this way. I made it the satisfaction is even double." - Jonny Milan

It was a clear victory. A sprint dominated by Milan in the last two hundred metres that left no room for any comeback which, once again, came at the end of another commendable day’s work from the team to build a golden opportunity.

“I have to say thanks like always to the Team. It was a bit chaotic in the final but they helped me in the best way possible during the race so I’m really happy and proud of us, and all that we did today.

“What Jasper [Stuyven] did in the last two kilometers it was simply perfect. We knew it was crucial to take this chicane in the first position and he really put me in the best place. We knew it was tricky and last year there was a crash. It was really important and he did a super job leaving me in the front. A masterclass leadout!”

“Today, compared to the first stage, we had a trickier course to race. The peloton was clearly nervous, especially on the final circuit with narrow roads and lots of corners. Racing together and holding the position was difficult, but we did a great job at key moments.

A four-man break with a 2min 30sec lead on the peloton with 80 km to go: Aaron Van Poucke (Flanders-Baloise), Ward Vanhoof (Flanders-Baloise), Warre Vangheluwe (Soudal Quick-Step) & Jordy Bouts (TDT-Unibet).

“We have achieved a high level of cohesion and, from the beginning of the year to now, we worked a lot the mechanisms of the leadout. On days like these, we can really act as the leading team. The results then come because, in addition to strength and good tactics, there is a strong bond between us and a great hunger for victory. We all work towards one goal. I have the duty to finalise, but victory is built from the beginning, working to control the breakaway and then holding the position. The dedication and motivation that each of us has, makes everything easier. That’s Teamwork, with a capital T!”

The Belgian stage race will offer two more chances for results. Tomorrow, on paper, is another day for the sprinters, while Sunday will be the queen stage with a Flemish classic route, with climbs such as the Paterberg and the iconic Kapelmuur.

“I am 23’ seconds behind the GC leader [7th position] and fighting for the overall victory it’s really not an easy thing. Let’s take it day by day. Tomorrow I think will be a bit windy so we need to be careful, but for sure we will try to do another nice race. On Sunday, let’s see what will come out”

Alec Segaert near the end of his stage-winning ride

Dirty Feet: Early days of the Tour de France

Weather at the race city of Tessenderlo at 1:20 PM, local time: 26C (79F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 11 km/hr (7 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco AlUla), Olav Kooij (Visma | Lease a Bike), Florian Senechal (Arkea-B&B Hotels), Filippo Ganna (INEOS Grenadiers) & John Degenkolb (Team dsm-Firmenich PostNL) did not start.

Here's the stage report from stage winner Alec Segaert's Team Lotto Dstny:

On the second stage of the Renewi Tour a time trial of 15,4 kilometers was on the menu, with start and finish in Tessenderlo. It was Alec Segaert who took the new best time, 10 seconds faster than Stefan Bissegger (EF Education-EasyPost) who had been sitting on the hot seat for quite some time. Segaert’s time of 16:59 proved to be the fastest one, nobody could go under it anymore. The 21-year-old Belgian takes his first WorldTour victory and now leads the general, points and youth classification.

Stage winner Alec Segaert on his way to winning the stage.

“I immediately had a good feeling and took the right pacing. I studied the course well and did a good recon, so I knew where I had to make the difference. Everything ran as planned, I didn’t know any intermediate times though as I was fully focused on myself. It went great. I couldn’t have dreamed of this win this morning, as a lot of top riders are at the start. I will always keep that picture of the top 10 with me”, a very happy Segaert said after his win.

“I also lead the general classification now. I will try to keep this jersey, especially in the last stage to Geraardsbergen that will not be easy. It’s my first WorldTour win and I will enjoy this first now.”

Weather at the finish city of Bilzen at 1:50 PM, local time: 28C (83F), sunny, with the wind from the southeast at 11 km/hr (7 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from fifth place Paul Penhoët's Team Grouapma-FDJ.

For his first battle with the world’s best sprinters this Wednesday in Bilzen, in the opening stage of the Renewi Tour, Paul Penhoët claimed a very solid fifth place. At the end of a slightly uphill final, the Frenchman also obtained his first top-10 in the WorldTour this season, on his first day of racing at this level. Thursday, a crucial time trial regarding the general classification will be on the menu.

One hundred and sixty-three kilometres were planned this Wednesday, not far away from Maastricht, in the first stage of the Renewi Tour. Made for the sprinters despite a challenging course at times, the day followed the usual scenario. “A five-man breakaway went almost from the start and the peloton kept it at two minutes throughout the day,” summed up Frédéric Guesdon. “The race wasn’t very lively, but the pace was still quite high all day long. Therefore, it was tiring and that’s why some riders got dropped from behind in the final.”

The start line in Riemst.

After a well-controlled chase, the peloton caught the break about fifteen kilometres from the finish, while the tension was growing. One of the favorites of the day, Olav Kooij, was even put out of contention due to a crash. “It was a bit of a mess because the race was quite easy until the last sixty kilometres, then it got really nervous and it was really hard to find each other,” said Paul. “In the final, the goal was to set up the train to position Paul as best as possible,” explained Frédéric. “There was already a key moment at fifteen kilometers where we had to move up a bit, then there was a succession of turns in the last three kilometres that we had to tackle in the first 20-30 positions.”

The nervousness increased even more in the last ten kilometres given the extremely high level of the field in this race. “There are twenty-three teams and almost as many world-class sprinters,” added Frédéric. “We knew it would be difficult. So the goal was more to put Paul in the right wheels and lead him as far as possible than to launch the sprint ourselves. The guys did a really good job from this point of view. Paul had new teammates for the train, in the likes of Fabian. We also had to adjust because Marc, who was supposed to be his last man, was not feeling very well and was not there for the final. Olivier and Fabian did the job for Paul, and they did it very well thanks to their experience.”

“I got Fabian and Oliv’ with myself fifteen kilometres from the finish, and that was enough,” added Paul. “Oliv’ did a great job to keep us in front until five kilometres, then Fabi moved well so that we weren’t overtaken. I had a good position two kilometres from the finish, at the right turn. Then, it was up to me to follow the right wheels and position myself as well as possible. I managed it pretty well until the flamme rouge, at the left turn.”

Around fifteenth position after the final hairpin, then around tenth place when the sprint started, Paul Penhoët managed to overtake a few more riders in the last 150 metres to take sixth place, which became fifth after Tim Merlier was disqualified. “Paul was in a good position when the bunch started to stretch out and he was able to keep his place up there, which shows that he had good legs,” said Frédéric. “I’m just a little disappointed because I was a bit on the right from one kilometre to 500 metres, and the wind was coming from the right,” added Paul. “I was kind of protecting the guys who were on the left while I was in the wind, but given that it was quite hard, the peloton was also stretched out. I was able to get back on Groenewegen’s wheel pretty quickly and then the sprint started very early. We were quite far from the first guys at that point, and on this kind of finish, you really have to be in front if you want to fight for a better result. It’s still a good day, because the legs are good, it was a tough finish, and it shows that it’s getting better and better. We always want to do better, I could have done better today, but it’s always good to see that we can fight at this level. This is the first time I have competed in a sprint with so many top guys. I am also looking forward to seeing what it can be like on Friday and Saturday in flat sprints.”

Before that, the riders will take part in a 15-kilometre time trial on Thursday, which should partly determine the general classification.
