Weather at the finish city of Bologna at 2:20 PM, local time: 13C (55F), cloudy, with the wind from the northwest at 8 km/hr (5 mph). There is a 17% chance of rain. It was raining on the riders at the start.

The race: Here's the report from second-place Tim Pidcock's Team INEOS Grenadiers.

Tom Pidcock produced a superb display to claim second in atrocious conditions at the Giro dell’Emilia.

The first of the Italian autumn classics is often defined by the final ascent of the iconic San Luca climb, but, such were the conditions, the race found itself in two before it had even reached the first of the five ascents.

Tom was attentive all day, being seen in second wheel from the moment of the split.

As the much-reduced peloton hit the first of the ascent of San Luca, the pace was increased. Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team-Emirates) would then launch his move, going solo over the top, and quickly amassing a gap on the rest.

Pidcock would be an instrumental part of the chase group, pushing the pace on the slick, technical descents, and riding a strong tempo on the climbs.

Into the last few hundred metres of the final climb, and Tom would sprint clear from the escape group to claim second on the day, behind lone winner Pogacar.
