Pascal Ackermann

Pascal Ackermann wins stage two.

Weather at the finish city of Fucecchio at 1:50 PM, local time: 18C (65F), partly cloudy, with the wind fron the north at 24 km/hr (18 mph). No rain is forecast. It was, however, raining at the start in Bologna.

The race: Here's the organizer's stage two summary.

The German rider Pascal Ackermann (Bora – Hansgrohe) won Stage 2 of the 102nd Giro d’Italia, 205km from Bologna to Fucecchio. Elia Viviani (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) and Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) finished second and third, respectively.

Primoz Roglic (Team Jumbo – Visma) retains the Maglia Rosa of leader of the General Classification.

JERSEYS:

Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner Pascal Ackermann said: “I feel so happy. It was my first chance to win a stage and we achieved it straight away. It’s good for the next three weeks. I chose the right moment to sprint from 250 meters to go. To win the first stage of my first Grand Tour is fantastic.”

The race leader Primoz Roglic said: “It wasn’t an easy day because it was cold from the beginning and also quite fast all the time. It’ll be another day in the Maglia Rosa tomorrow. The team worked hard for that. It’s a pleasure to retain the jersey.”

Organizer's stage 2 preview:

The stage is rolling. The route starts uphill, crosses the Apennines and then takes a long descent to Prato. Next, a succession of sharper or gentler ascents and descents, including the Montalbano (Castra) categorised climb, leads to the final kilometres, raced on undulating and twisting roads.

The final 4 km start on narrow urban roads, with sharp bends, followed by broad, straight avenues, with a few roundabouts in-between. The home straight (900 m) is on 7 m wide asphalt road.
