Primoz Roglic

Primoz Roglic was the day's fastest rider. He'll start stage two in pink.

Weather at Bologna at 1:50 PM, local time: 22C (71F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the north at 11 km/hr (7 mph). No rain is forecast for today. It will almost surely rain Sunday.

The race: Here's the organizer's stage 1 summary.

A hot favourite for the inaugural Individual Time Trial of the 102nd Giro d’Italia, Primoz Roglic (Team Jumbo – Visma) took the win with a significant margin of 19 seconds over Simon Yates (Mitchelton – Scott), 23 seconds over Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain – Merida) and 28 seconds over Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana Pro Team), who is the best young rider while Giulio Ciccone (Trek – Segafredo) is the first King of the Mountains this year. This is the first Maglia Rosa for a Slovenian rider, three years after Roglic made his Giro d’Italia debut by missing out on the win for only one hundredth of a second to Tom Dumoulin in the opening time trial in Apeldoorn.

Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the race leader Roglic said: “It’s true that I’ve had to wait a lot on the hot seat before I was declared the winner but I’m very happy with this victory. I didn’t have any particular tactic except for going as fast as possible. I’m surprised by the gaps. Two days ago I met Gianni Bugno who wore the Maglia Rosa from start to finish [in 1990]. I don’t know if I can do this too but the most important is to have the Maglia Rosa in Verona.”

The Maglia Bianca Miguel Angel Lopez said: “I’m very happy with my performance today. I went fast on the flat but since it was a short time trial, I just to go flat out from start to finish.”

The Maglia Azzurra Giulio Ciccone said: “It was my goal to set the fastest time up the hill, so we studied the course carefully and opted for a bike change at the bottom of the climb. I’m glad it worked out well. I really wanted to achieve this first goal.”

Organizer's stage 1 preview: The ITT starts with 6 flat kilometres on broad, mostly straight urban boulevards, and ends with a steep 2 km climb to the Sanctuary of San Luca.

Final kilometres: The closing phases of the stage are very demanding: 2,100 metres before the finish, the route takes a sharp U-turn to the right, and the climb to San Luca begins. The climb alternates sharp ramps (up to 16%) and short lengths with 8-9% gradients. The roadway is narrowed and runs along an arcade, climbing all the way to the sanctuary. The road reaches the maximum gradient after the first pass under the cloister, by a double curve (“le Orfanelle”). The home straight is short (90 m), and the finish line sits on 5 m tarmac.
