Bicycle History

Stage 18 photos | Stage 18 map and profile |

The Race: Today's challenging day in the mountains will be ridden without two important protagonists, Diego Ulissi (Lampre-Merida) and Ivan Santaromita (Orica-GreenEdge).

The first big climb of the day, the Passo San Pellegrino, was the scene of the stage's first big move, where about 14 riders went clear. Near the top a few riders went ahead of the break with the maglia rosa group further back.

One the final ascent to Rifugio Panarotta, Thomas de Gendt raced ahead, but KOM Julian Arredondo was having none of that. Arredondo chased him down, went away and won the stage.

In the maglia rosa group Nairo Quintana was able to defend his lead, but Cadel Evans suffered enough time loss that his chances of a podium finish are about gone.
