A muddy Michael Vanthourenhout wins a big one.

The race: Here's the report from second-place Tom Pidcock's Team INEOS Grenadiers:

Tom Pidcock bounced back from a mechanical on the start line and a late crash to finish just three seconds behind winner Michael Vanthourenhout in driving rain.

The World Champion suffered an early setback as he had a bike issue as the race started, dropping to 31st overall, but a superb effort saw him carve through the field to make the front group of three by the second lap.

Pidcock was joined by Vanthourenhout and Eli Iserbyt, until the latter was distanced in the following lap.

Pidcock then gained a small advantage over Vanthourenhout as the laps progressed, both riders managing the technical course in terrible conditions.

The pivotal moment occurred on the penultimate lap as Pidcock suffered a small crash, allowing his Belgian rival to take the lead.

Pidcock trailed by 11 seconds at the start of the final lap and managed to reduce the gap to just three seconds, but Vanthourenhout held on to take a hard-fought victory.

Puck Pieterse finishes more than a minute ahead of her nearest chaser.

Les Woodland's book Dirty Feet: How the Great Unwashed Created the Tour de France is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

The race: Marianne Vos did not start.

Here's the UCI's race report:

Puck Pieterse was able to win the 'Mother of all crosses' in Overijse after a clever solo. The young Dutchwoman from the Alpecin-Deceuninck team took off from the start, eventually putting her competitors at more than a minute in the results.

France's Hélène Clauzel was the first to turn onto the red carpet in Overijse. A minor crash by Lucia Bramati held up Belgian champion Sanne Cant, the Italian's chain broke in two leaving no escape from a fall. Of course, World Cup leader Fem van Empel and World Undertakers champion Puck Pieterse were immediately at the front. Lucinda Brand was less lucky, having to click out during the start, losing a good position to start her race.

Pieterse seemed to have set her sights on this race and immediately found her turn on the first technical and slippery descent. She immediately turned the knob there and seemed to glide full downhill without fear. That was slightly less the case with Van Empel, she had been introduced to the surface earlier during reconnaissance and thus seemed to build some caution into her descent. Meanwhile, Shirin Van Anrooij, who just last week managed to win the World Cup race in the Beekse Bergen, moved up to third place.

After 1 lap, Pieterse already put her next competitor Van Empel at 19 seconds. Van Empel looked back for a moment and so seemed to quickly make peace with a possible second place. Van Anrooij, Betsema and Van Alphen who were fighting for place three all slid down in the same corner. This again highlighted the slippery course. Van Empel also made a mistake on a descent moments later and was unable to avoid touching the surface.

Pieterse did not seem to be bothered by slips at all. After the second lap, she was already riding around with a lead of 45 seconds over Van Empel and a minute over Van Anrooij. Mistakes were piling up in the background but Pieterse seemed to be able to keep her balance perfectly in the slippery mud like a tightrope walker. Lap after lap, the young Dutchwoman built her lead and behind her, Van Empel and Shirin Van Anrooij seemed certain of a podium place.

Offscreen, Brand made a tremendously strong remount. From a lost position, she still managed to ride towards 4th place. But of course the strong Pieterse no longer had to take that into account. A beaming smile appeared on her muddy face at the finish line arch. Van Empel crossed the finish line in second place at 1 minute and three seconds and remains the leader in the World Cup standings. Van Anrooij completed the podium.
