Women

The podium, from left: Ceylin Del Carmen Alvarado (2nd), Lucinda Brand (1st) & Inge Van Der Heijden (3rd). TDF volume 1

Bill & Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, Vol 1: 1903 - 1975 is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

The race:

Lucinda Brand won the Superprestige Diegem to take her first victory since Dublin at the start of the month. She beat Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado who came second, and Inge van der Heijden in third place.

Lucinda Brand and Alvarado started fast, while Sanne Cant struggled at first but soon made her way back to near the front of the pack.

With two laps remaining it was between Brand and Alvarado. They appeared to be well-matched, but in the final lap Brand simply rode away to take the race.
