The Race: Here's the organizer's race summary.
The 78th edition of Omloop het Nieuwsblad was right up Dylan van Baarle's alley. The Dutchman soloed to victory on the Elisabethlaan in Ninove. He made it ahead of De Lie and Laporte.
At 10.55 am the starting gun sounded for the 78th edition of Omloop het Nieuwsblad for the men. 't Kuipke opened its doors wide again for the fans to cheer on their favourite at the start. 207 km between Ghent and Ninove, that's what was on the menu.
Not long after the start signal, the early break was already in full swing. There were seven of them, the men who would colour the first hours of the race: Louis Blouwe (Bingoal-Wallonie Bruxelles), Alex Colman and Gilles De Wilde (Team Flanders-Baloise), Adam de Vos (Human Powered Health), Mathis Le Berre (Team Arkea-Samsic), Mathias Norsgaard (Movistar Team) and Jelle Wallays (Cofidis). Their lead was up to seven minutes.
In the peloton, it was Jumbo-Visma that took control of the race and set the pace in the peloton. With Jan Tratnik, they sent a man on the counter-attack. He was joined by Haller (Bora-Hansgrohe), O'Brien (Team Jayco Alula), Swift (INEOS Grenadiers), Van Hooydonck (Jumbo-Visma) and Wright (Bahrain Victorious). But their attack did not really carry far. The peloton did not let up and the lead of the break began to shrink.
Just over 50km from the line, top favourite Arnaud de Lie went to ground. The young Belgian of Lotto Dstny had to change bikes and was forced into the chase. He was soon able to rejoin the peloton, however, just before the final began. Leading up to that final, the leading group also began to shrink. At the front, only Wallays, Norsgaard and Le Berre remained.
Jumbo-Visma meanwhile rushed to the foot of the Molenberg, where Van Hooydonck opened the throttle. That also meant the immediate end of the breakaway. A group of about 25 riders formed. Jumbo-Visma clearly wanted to make it a tough race. Van Baarle was the next to shake the tree. He was joined by Milan (Bahrain Victorious), Vermeersch (Lotto Dstny) and Le Berre, who was also in the early breakaway. At the back, Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo) and Geniets (Groupama FDJ) tried to cross on the Haaghoek, while a regrouping followed in the peloton. After the final Leberg, Stuyven and Geniets were joined by Van Moer (Lotto Dstny), Eekhoorn (Team DSM) Tratnik (Jumbo-Visma) and Oliveira (UAE Team Emirates).
On the Berendries, things at the front went too fast for Milan. Meanwhile, it was Van Avermaet (AG2R Citroen Team) leading the forcing in the peloton. Organisation did not come, a new attack did. Tim Wellens tried it in turn on Elverenberg - Vossenhol. Not much later, Pidcock also did his bit. In the meantime, it was Van Baarle at the front who went full out in search of victory. The only one who could follow was Le Berre. In the peloton, Jumbo-Visma put the block on it.
Meanwhile, at the front, Van Baarle was the favourite. Bahrain Victorious tried to rectify the lopsided situation at the back. The gap was around 40 seconds leading up to the Muur van Geraardsbergen. On the Vesten, it was over and out for Le Berre. Van Baarle started the climb of Muur and Kapelmuur solo. In the peloton, it was Wellens who upped the tempo. Together with Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious), he went in search of the lone leader. De Lie, with Laporte (Jumbo-Visma) in his wheel, also went smoothly over the Wall. That group of four went in search of leader Van Baarle.
Also on the Bosberg, Van Baarle successfully defended his lead of 15 seconds over the quartet. He started the final 12 km solo towards the new finish on the Elisabethlaan in Ninove. In the sprint for second place, it was De Lie who made it ahead of Laporte.
The sprint for second: Arnaud de Lie (left) beats Christophe Laporte.
