Weather at the finish city of Font Romeu at 2:30 PM, local time: 22C (72F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the south-southwest at 26 km/hr (16 mph). At 3:00 PM there is a 44% chance of scattered thunderstorms, rising to a 72% chance of rain at 4:00 PM.

The stage: This stage begins on flat terrain but will gradually ascend towards the Pyrénées Orientales. The Col de Mont-Louis will be this edition’s first notable mountain pass - a predecessor to the Font-Romeu, the race’s first high-altitude finale. It is expected to identify a group of around 20 or 30 of the strongest riders that will fight it out for the top spots of La Vuelta 26.

The race: As the riders were beginning the final Font Romeu climb the stage was paused and then cancelled as heavy hail began to fall and the riders had to find shelter.

The Vuelta Organization posted: For the security of the riders, stage three has been cancelled due to hail and severe weather. There will be no winner and no podium ceremony.

They later posted this: As the riders were heading towards the first summit finish of La Vuelta 26 in Font-Romeu (France), they had to stop and seek shelter because of hail and extreme weather. With safety the main concern, the decision was made to cancel stage 3. The race will resume on Tuesday with a 104.8 km route around Andorra la Vella.
