Roman philosopher Seneca’s Letter to his Friend Lucilius and an Essay Addressed to Emperor Nero is available in both audiobook and Kindle eBook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Aubel at 2:35 PM, local time: 18C (65F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the southwest at 21 km/hr (13 mph). Starting at 3:00 PM there is a 69% chance of rain.

The stage: The final stage of the 2026 Ethias Tour de Wallonie will lead the riders from Bassenge—which hosted a stage finish in 2014—to Aubel, a town that is a regular fixture of the race, notably having hosted the final finish in 2023. This stage will undoubtedly be the most demanding of the five days of racing and is expected to cause significant upheaval in the general classification.

After a stretch along the banks of the Meuse, the peloton will head into the Pays de Herve region for the first time, then tackle several famous climbs from Liège–Bastogne–Liège, such as the Côte de Forges and La Redoute. Subsequently—traversing equally challenging terrain—the route will lead them back toward the Pays de Herve. After crossing the finish line for the first time at the 128-kilometer mark, the riders will have two 30-kilometer laps left to complete.

This circuit, designed around Aubel, features not a single flat meter and includes two major climbs: the Côte de Stockis and the Côte de Magis—the summit of which lies less than three kilometers from the final finish line of the Ethias Tour de Wallonie.

The race: Loic Vanlaere (Pauwels Sauzen-Altez Industriebouw) & Jarno Bellens (Baloise Verzekeringen-Het Poetsbureau Lions) did not start. Early in the stage Lars Daelmans (Pauwels Sauzen-Altez Industriebouw) abandoned

Here's the report from stage winner & new GC leader Ben Oliver's Modern Adventure Pro Cycling team:

New Zealander Ben Oliver caps off a dominant team performance at the Ethias Tour de Wallonie,  sprinting to victory on stage five and delivering Modern Adventure Pro Cycling’s first GC win.

The result was the culmination of five days of determined racing from the whole team. Oliver opened his account on stage two with an impressive victory in difficult conditions, moving into the overall race lead after a strong team performance. Meanwhile, teammate Samuel Flórez made his mark in the mountains competition, taking the KOM jersey after an aggressive ride on stage one and successfully defending it through stage two.

The race took a turn on stage three, with a late crash costing Oliver the overall lead and Flórez relinquishing the KOM jersey, leaving the team facing an uphill battle heading into the final two stages. Rather than letting the setback define the rest of their race, they responded with determination, racing aggressively to put themselves back into contention. Stage four saw Flórez back in the KOM jersey, with Oliver picking up valuable bonus seconds to keep the team in the GC fight.

Entering the fifth, and potentially most challenging, final stage, Oliver was just four seconds down on the general classification. The team rode a calm and patient race, fully focused on the final sprint. The challenging parcours brought a reduced group to the line, where Oliver produced a perfectly timed sprint to take the stage victory and the crucial bonus seconds needed to overturn the deficit and secure overall victory at the Tour de Wallonie.

Modern Adventure co-founder, George Hincapie:  “I’m really proud of all the guys this week - riders and staff. We were put in a new position by winning stage two and taking the overall lead, and the guys  all stepped up. In fact, not only did they step up, but they took control. Today they rode with confidence,  they sat back all day, biding their time for the finish and in the end it paid off. I could not be any happier with the guys. Super proud.”

Weather at the finish city of Eupen at 2:40 PM, local time: 14C (58F), showers in the vicinity, with the wind from the south-southwest at 23 km/hr (14 mph). Chance of the showers continuing is 33%.

The stage: For this fourth stage, the race will set off from Dison—which hosted the start of the Lotto Grand Prix de Wallonie in 2025—and finish in Eupen, a town visited by the Ethias Tour de Wallonie in 2013.

This route will undoubtedly play to the strengths of the Ardennes Classics specialists. The peloton will head toward the High Fens, making for the Signal de Botrange—Belgium’s highest point. It is a demanding start before the course plunges southward into Belgium’s German-speaking Community, passing through Saint Vith and Malmedy. From there, the riders will face a highly challenging route featuring, in particular, the ascents of the Ferme Libert and the Côte de Ster.

The riders will then head toward Eupen, where they will cross the finish line—situated atop the Côte de Frankendelle—for the first time. They will complete an initial circuit loop heading toward Membach, followed by a second, nearly identical loop that includes the added challenge of the Edelstrasse—a brutal wall featuring gradients exceeding 20%. All this leads up to a final ascent of the Frankendelle for an explosive finish!

The race: Not starting: Axandre Van Petegem (Tarteletto-Isorex), Asbjorn Hellemose (Jayco-AlUla), Arne Marit (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe). Jon Barrenetxea (Movistar), & Milan Menten (Lotto-Intermarché). That should leave a stage-start peloton of 109 riders.

The large number of non-starters is a result of the of the massive crash at the end of stage three.

Here's the report from new GC leader Riley Sheehan's NSN Cycling Team:

After mixed fortunes to start the Tour de Wallonie, Riley Sheehan experienced the joy and cruelty of cycling once again in Eupen on Thursday.

Sheehan looked like he was about to claim his second win on Wallonian roads in the space of three weeks this afternoon when no other rider could follow his bold solo attack with 7km to go.

He showed off his technical prowess on a fast and technical approach to the flamme rouge, maintaining a small gap over his nearest GC rivals after another hard day of racing in the rain on undulating terrain.

However, the uphill final kilometer proved too much for Sheehan, as the surging home rider Arnaud De Lie (LOI) managed to close down what appeared to be a stage-winning gap to pass him barely meters from the finish line.

Sheehan says: “You know, I’m a bit disappointed and just in shock. I went so, so deep, and to get passed on the line by De Lie is heartbreaking. It’s good to be up there in the fight on GC today. I made some progress today, and I’m proud of the effort.

“It was the tactic to attack on the final climb – [Krists] Neilands was also up there, so it was going to be one of us, and I saw a good moment to put some pressure on. I saw how good I felt on the top of the climb, and I thought I’d keep on going. I made the gap, and from there I was just holding off the peloton. I went so, so deep, and it almost paid off!

The American’s second place adds to an eventful four days in Belgium so far for Sheehan. He placed third in heavy rain on stage 2, but suffered a flat tire in the final KM in Monday’s opener and was caught behind a huge crash late on in Wednesday’s stage.

Nonetheless, his heroics moved him into the race lead, as he looks to emulate teammate Corbin Strong’s GC victory in last year’s edition. He holds a three-second lead over Ben Oliver (MAP) and De Lie, with fourth-placed Kim Heiduk (NCI) a further 12 seconds in arrears.

“It’s good to hear that I’m the leader,” he adds. “Tomorrow is the hardest day, I hope it’s not any harder than I went today, but with the team we have, I think we have a good shot at this. The guys are really strong, and the team we have, I think we can give everything. I feel confident in our team – let’s play our cards right, and let’s go for the win.

“I really enjoy the parcours here, it’s really nice. It suits me well – I’m a punchy rider. If I can win this race it would be fantastic.”

DS Dror Pekatch believes Sheehan moving into the distinctive orange jersey is a belated reward for the team’s performance in Belgium this week.

He says: “Finally, today we got what we deserved more or less after three days – the first day we had the bad luck of a flat tire in the end, and then a crash yesterday. We knew Riley was one of the strongest guys, and we know we have a good team here.

“He took his shot going for the bonus seconds going on the last climb, and then he held his gap until the finish. He missed out by one meter, basically, so it’s bittersweet to take the jersey.

“The race will be decided tomorrow – there are very small gaps on GC, there are the intermediate sprints, so we will need to fight tomorrow. We are ready for the challenge, but we know it’s going to be very hard. We will do our best – we’ve got seven guys here riding very well every day.”

Weather at the finish city of Vaux-sur-Sûre at 2:30 PM, local time: 15C (59F), cloudy, with the wind from the wouthwest at 23 km/hr (14 mph). There is a 40% chance of rain.

The stage: Two brand-new towns feature in this third stage: Habay and Vaux-sur-Sûre. Indeed, these municipalities have never before hosted the Ethias Tour de Wallonie! This entire stage will take place within the Province of Luxembourg.

The first section—heading toward the southern part of the province, and specifically toward Virton—will be relatively flat. The riders will then encounter more rugged terrain as they make their way toward Neufchâteau. After covering more than 130 km, the riders will enter a 20-km circuit, which they must complete two additional times. This local loop will feature a mix of wide and narrow roads. The finish line is situated at the end of a straight stretch of nearly 4 kilometers featuring a gentle uphill gradient. This finale is sure to be ripe for attacks once again, though punchy sprinters will also have their chance!

The race: There was a giant crash near the finish. Arne Marit (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) fell while trying to set things up for his teammates in the finishing sprint. That resulted in a giant chain-reaction crash that took down or blocked about 30 riders.

Here's the report from new GC leader Kim Heiduk's Team Netcompany INEOS:

Kim Heiduk sprinted to second place on the third stage of Tour De Wallonie to also be promoted into the race lead.

Axel Laurance also managed to come home fourth in the sprint after a crash inside the final 2km of the 176km race saw much of the field out of contention to the sprint.

Speaking after the stage, Heiduk said:
“Yeah I’m really happy. A bit of a surprise I would say, and a bit disappointed to not win the stage. I think today was a really beautiful stage and luckily it was dry, unlike yesterday! It was super nice, and the final was a bit more difficult with the wind today.

“We tried to split the bunch in the second last lap but it didn’t really work. We then focused on the final and the boys did an amazing job to position me, Axel and Sam. Originally, we wanted to try and go for Sam [Welsford] today but he was blocked a bit further behind and was held up after the crash.

“I’m enjoying some good shape and it’s fun being here with the boys, we have a really good atmosphere. Every day is nice and we try and get the best result. For sure, I will try and keep the leaders jersey. In the end, we’re here with Axel and me for GC, and we have two good cards I think. We will try and win with one of us, and tomorrow will be a good test for us."

As well as leading the GC, three seconds ahead of Jordi Meeus (Red Bull - BORA - Hansgrohe) Heiduk is also leading the points classification.

Tomorrow will see the riders tackle another punchy stage from Dison to Eupen, covering 166km.

Weather at the finish town of Libramont-Chevigny at 2:30 PM, local time: 16C (61F), rain, with the wind from the southwest at 23 km/hr (14 mph). The rain is forecast to end about 3:30 PM.

The stage: The second stage will set off from the town of Jodoigne in Walloon Brabant. The first 30 kilometers of the stage will be relatively flat and exposed to the wind. After crossing the Meuse Valley, the riders will head south into the province of Namur—passing through Ciney—before reaching Rochefort, where the first bonus sprint will take place.

The course will then become hillier, notably featuring the ascent of Fourneau-Saint-Michel and a passage through Saint-Hubert. Next, the route heads toward Libramont-Chevigny, where the riders will enter a local circuit—comprising primarily narrow roads—which they must complete twice. This stage could well favor the audacious riders.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner and new GC leader Ben Oliver's Modern Adventure Pro Cycling Team.

Emerging from the rain-swept finale on stage 2 of the Tour de Wallonie, New Zealander Ben Oliver sprinted to an impressive stage victory, taking his first win of the season and Modern Adventure Pro Cycling’s third race victory of the year.

The win didn’t come easy as the team fought not only the tough conditions but a late mishap which saw Oliver unclip heading into the finish, before being brought back to the front by teammates Riley Pickrell and Paul Wright in the final kilometre before powering through to take the team’s biggest victory to date in its debut season.

Having finished fourth on stage 1, Oliver’s victory and time bonuses propel him into the race lead heading into tomorrow’s third stage. Teammate Samuel Flóres maintained his lead in the KOM jersey at the end of stage 2, having taken the jersey on day one from his efforts in the breakaway.

Ben Oliver: “First European win for the team! We were chasing stage wins this week, and to get that on the second stage after a close day yesterday with fourth with George watching before he heads home tomorrow. To get it done whilst he was here was an awesome way to finish a wet and windy day in the Tour of Wallonie. The boys had my back all day. Me and Riley were in a good position for the sprint then him and Paul got me out of trouble with 1500m to go. We got the job done - a wicked day for the team.”

Modern Adventure Pro Cycling DS Ty Magner:  “So happy for the guys. So happy for the organization. We’ve been telling the team for months to commit to each other, commit to the plans, commit to being a team, and results will follow. From day one in Alula the guys showed what was possible, and it’s only taken 6 months to take our first win in Europe.

"Also just extremely happy for Ben. This time last year he was racing crits in the states, and for him to have these opportunities now is one reason this team was founded. A bike racer will always be a bike racer. We’ll enjoy this one!”

Weather at the finish city of Lobbes at 2:40 PM, local time: 22C (72F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the southwest at 11 km/hr (7 mph). No rain is forecast.

The stage: The Grand Départ of the Ethias Tour de Wallonie will take place in Manage, in the Centre region. This marks the first time that Manage has hosted this stage race. The first part of the course will be relatively flat as it heads toward Walloon Brabant. The riders will then tackle the demanding cobbled sector of the Rue de l’Abbaye in Villers-la-Ville, stretching nearly 3 kilometers. After the first sprint in Spy, the riders will descend toward the Sambre River and encounter the Tour’s first major challenge: the Côte de Trémouroux.

The peloton will skirt the Charleroi urban area before heading toward the final circuit. After crossing the finish line in Lobbes for the first time, the riders will head toward the Mur de Thuin, which they must ascend twice. The finish itself will be contested at the top of a false flat rising for over 2,500 meters. The winner will undoubtedly be a powerful rider.

The race: Here's the report from second-place Anders Foldager's Team Jayco AlUla.

Team Jayco AlUla has made a strong start to the Tour de Wallonie, with Anders Foldager finishing second in stage one.

The purple MAAP jerseys of Team Jayco AlUla were impossible to miss in the 180-kilometre opening stage. Dries De Bondt was part of the early escape, alongside two other riders.

The breakaway riders built up a maximum lead of over four minutes, but with 17 kilometres to go they were caught by the chasing peloton.

On the local final circuit, which included the short climb of the Mur de Thuin, there were plenty of attacks afterwards. Foldager attacked as well and showed there that he had come to Belgium with high ambitions.

Ultimately, the stage ended in a bunch sprint. The 24-year-old Foldager, winner of the Flèche Brabançonne earlier this season, sprinted strongly to claim second place.

Anders Foldager:
“As a team, we rode aggressively and took risks. In the end, I went for the sprint and finished second, which earned me some crucial bonus seconds for the general classification! I’m pleased with that. This was a good start to my next block of racing following my break.”
