Weather at the start/finish city of Nanning at 12:00 PM, local time: 29C (84F), partly cloudy, with the win from the north-northeast at 13 km/hr (8 mph). There is just a 3% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Paul Magnier's Team Soudal Quick-Step:

Paul Magnier continued to write history at the Tour of Guangxi, where he also captured the last stage of the event to become the only rider with five victories this year in a World Tour race. It was a jaw-dropping performance in China from the 21-year-old, who joined Tom Boonen and Mark Cavendish as the only riders in the history of Soudal Quick-Step to have won at least 19 races for the team in a single season.

The Frenchman, who since mid-September has gone on an almost unstoppable winning romp, took home also the points jersey – the third of this kind of his career, after the ones he got at the Okolo Slovenska and the CRO Race, in the last four weeks.

Nanning welcomed the peloton on Sunday with a tricky circuit for the final stage of the week, and it was on the last lap that the bunch split, once they hit the punishing gradients of a 1.3km climb that came with 20 kilometers to go. Magnier found himself in the second chasing group, but thanks to a stellar effort of his Soudal Quick-Step teammates, he made it back inside the final ten kilometers and went on to prevail again in the sprint.

“We came here with a lot of ambition, as we wanted to do a good race, but we didn’t expect to have this fantastic run. The team did a really great job and I had a strong form in the last two months, but I didn’t think it was possible to take five stages, especially as sprinting on these wide roads it’s different from what I am used to. Once I got my first victory, I was more relaxed and each win that came from that moment on was a bonus.”

“It’s been an unforgettable week for us in China and I would like to return here one day, maybe even next year. The way I ended my season augurs well for the next one, when I hope to continue improving and win some important races for Soudal Quick-Step”, said the first Frenchman in almost three decades to win 19 races in a season.

Weather at the start city of Yizhou at 11:50 AM, local time: 27C (81F), light rain, with the wind from the east at 10 km/hr (6 mph). The rain is forecast to continue until 2:00 PM, then start again a little before 3:00 PM.

The race: Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Victorious) did not start, leaving 125 riders in the race.

Here's the report from stage winner and new GC leader Paul Double's Team Jayco AlUla:

Paul Double continued his superb run of queen stage victories, taking a solo win atop the toughest stage of this year’s Tour of Guangxi – his first at WorldTour level.

Still riding high from his overall win at Okolo Slovenska at the end of last month, Double picked up where he left off on the penultimate day in China. Stage five of the Tour of Guangxi was the first major chance for the general classification riders after four sprint finishes.

The 29-year-old went clear with a group of three other riders on the final climb of the day to Nongla after the bunch had reeled in the day’s early escape. Double’s breakaway companions fell away but the British rider remained strong, attacking and dropping the final rider just inside the ultimate kilometre.

Double’s lead over his chasers was never secure but he dug deep and crossed the line nine seconds ahead of the next best rider. Along with the bonus seconds on the line, the win was enough to give him a 15-second lead over Victor Lafay going into the short, punchy final stage.

Paul Double:
“It’s a bit surreal really. You say to your friends and your teammates ‘oh, I’m going to win tomorrow’ but with the guys that are here I’m not sure that I really expected it. To pull it off is amazing. It’s a bit of a surprise, but I’m super happy to have done it. Hopefully, we can look after the jersey tomorrow and have a good day, it would be super to bring home a WorldTour general classification win, not to mention my first WorldTour win. The boys were great and they’ve been great all week. We haven’t quite managed to get the results that we hoped for, but we’ve been there. I managed well with the heat today and I pulled it off. It’s awesome.”

Weather at the finish city of Jinchengjiang at 11:30 AM, local time: 29C (86F), cloudy. with the wind from the south at 6 km/hr (4 mph). There is an 8% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner & GC leader Paul Magnier's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Paul Magnier never ceases to amaze. The 21-year-old notched up his fourth consecutive victory of the week after a demonstration of raw power in the closing meters of the Tour of Guangxi, where this time he produced a fantastic seated sprint to take the spoils in Jinchengjiang. For Magnier, this was the 18th win of a fantastic season, a number only three other riders reached for the Wolfpack in the team’s 23-year history: Tom Boonen in 2004 and 2006, Mark Cavendish in 2013, and Elia Viviani in 2018.

Friday’s stage was a complicated one, containing four classified climbs – some with pretty hard gradients – and a small hill just before the final ten kilometers of the race, but Soudal Quick-Step was again on duty, pacing in the peloton behind the six-man breakaway and neutralizing all the attacks that came in the closing part of the day. Riding under the flamme rouge, Paul was guided by the experienced Dries Van Gestel before hitting the front from the distance and outpowering all his opponents for our squad’s seventh consecutive victory in just three days.

It was another superb display of dominance from Paul, who picked up ten bonus seconds that helped him increase his lead in the general classification ahead of the penultimate stage, concluding on the tough climb to the Nongla Scenic Spot.

“We had to control a strong leading group, which wasn’t easy, because everyone was tired after four hard days of chasing the breakaway, but in the end also the GC teams helped and we managed to bring the group back. I want to thank my teammates for doing another fantastic job, without them this wouldn’t have been possible”, said Paul, the youngest rider in 47 years to get to 23 pro victories. “Today I had to start from far, but in the end, I could make it on my own. It was a long and hard sprint, and I’m delighted I could pull it off. It feels amazing to score again four wins in a race after Slovakia and Croatia.”

Weather at the finish city of Bama at 11:50 AM, local time: 28C (83F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the south at 8 km/hr (5 mph). There is a 40% chance of rain, dropping to 9% at 2:00 PM.

The race: Luca Mozzato (Arkea-B&B Hotels) & Martin López (XDS Astana) did not start.

Here's the stage three report from stage winner & GC leader Paul Magnier's Team Soudal Quick-Step:

Paul Magnier, Ethan Hayter, Paul Magnier, Tim Merlier, Paul Magnier. The last three days have been truly amazing for our team, who is on a roll in the final week of the season, with five consecutive victories delivered by three different riders. The most recent of these came in China, where Paul Magnier became the first rider to win three consecutive stages in a World Tour race this season after another huge sprint, this time in Bama.

On paper, it was the hardest day of the Tour of Guangxi so far, with more than 2300 meters of climbing, but this didn’t stop the Soudal Quick-Step boys from chasing the breakaway again and keeping things together on the final hill, which came inside 15 kilometers to go and featured a short but steep section. Not even a late attack could prevent the longest stage of the week from coming down to a bunch sprint, and Magnier – who rounded the last corner in an excellent position – produced another brilliant sprint and dashed to his 22nd pro victory.

“It was an early start and a long day, but we were all motivated to give our best. We worked hard the entire stage and it’s nice to be rewarded for this with another stage victory here in China. I want to thank my teammates and the staff for all their work and commitment, it’s beautiful to experience this amazing Wolfpack atmosphere on a daily basis. It’s something special, that makes the difference.”

“I’m happy with this success and with retaining the red jersey, but I’m not thinking of the general classification. Our plan is to continue taking it one day at a time, while making the most of every opportunity”, said the youngest rider this century to amass 17 victories in a single season.

Weather at the finish city of Jingxi at 11:30 AM, local time: 24C (76F), cloudy, with the wind from the south at 8 km/hr (5 mph). There is a 60% chance of rain, dropping to 34% at 2:00 PM, then increasing to 70% at 3:00 PM. It was raining at the start.

The race: Simone Consonni (Lidl-Trek) did not start.

Here's the report from stage winner Paul Magnier's Team Soudal Quick-Step:

Paul Magnier displayed again his impeccable form as he became just the second rider to reach 16 victories this season, at the end of the Tour of Guangxi’s second stage, which concluded in Jingxi, after almost 180 kilometers. It was an emphatic sprint win for the Frenchman, who consolidated his place at the top of the general classification and will continue to wear the race’s red jersey.

The final part of the stage was also the most complicated one. On the only classified climb of the day, while the breakaway was being reduced to just three men, several riders attacked from the bunch in an attempt to put pressure and fragment it. Just as it had done until that moment, Soudal Quick-Step controlled these moves and brought them back before eventually overhauling the escapees. Another attack, this time with five kilometers to go, tried to surprise the sprinters’ teams, but the peloton remained as one and went full speed under the flamme rouge.

It was another hectic bunch sprint, but Paul Magnier remained calm and took the right wheels before unleashing a blistering speed inside the last 150 meters that saw him put several bike lengths into his opponents. Soudal Quick-Step’s speedster crossed the line arms aloft for the second day in a row, racking up the team’s third victory in the past 24 hours. At the same time, Paul became the first Frenchman in 28 years to get to 16 wins in a single season, a stunning achievement for the 21-year-old.

“We had another good day at the office. It was fast today and the breakaway was strong, but Warre was incredibly strong and was motivated to do a great job, especially as he won here last year and we wanted to take the victory again. I saved energy in the bunch, then Dries put me in a perfect position for the finishing straight, and I did my best in the sprint. I am happy with my two victories so far, and we’ll just see what we can do in the remaining stages”, Magnier explained after the podium ceremony.

Paul Magnier takes the first stage.

Story of the Giro d'Italia, volume 1

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Giro d'Italia, A Year-by-Year History of the Tour of Italy, Vol 1: 1909 - 1970 is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Paul Magnier's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Paul Magnier started the Tour of Guangxi with a bang, taking the opening stage in Fangchenggang after another towering sprint. Paul has now won at least a stage in his last three races: Okolo Slovenska, Cro Race, and the Tour of Guangxi, the season’s final World Tour event. In doing so, he became the first overall leader of the Chinese race, which is running its sixth edition, one that is sure to give several chances to the fast men.

Consisting of several laps, the 148.8km stage one was a pretty straightforward one, animated by two different breakaways chased by the sprinters’ teams, including Soudal Quick-Step. A stage victor here last year, Warre Vangheluwe did an excellent job at the front of the bunch, helping it catch the first of these moves and later reel in also the other two escapees, inside the closing 20 kilometers.

Going under the flamme rouge of this stage, a crash split the peloton, leaving only a handful of riders in contention, including Magnier. The phenomenal Frenchman had Dries Van Gestel with him, who once again delivered a sensational lead-out, leaving Paul in an excellent position with 150 meters to go, and the 21-year-old from Grenoble didn’t miss the opportunity to surge past the others and take his 20th victory in the Soudal Quick-Step jersey.

“It was for the first time in my career that I sprinted on straight and big roads like this, and I must say that I was a bit nervous in the final kilometers, because I had no idea if I would find some space, but my teammates did an excellent job and in the last 200 meters I was still feeling strong and fresh, so I made it to the line. I’m happy to celebrate my 15th success of the season and take another win for the Wolfpack”, said Paul – who also leads the points and youth classifications – after bringing Soudal Quick-Step’s tenth victory at the Tour of Guangxi.
