Weather at the start/finish city of Nanning at 10:10 AM,. local time: 26C (79F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the northeast at 11 km/hr (6 mph). There is just a 2% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from GC winner Lennert Van Eetvelt's Team Lotto Dstny.

After his victory in yesterday’s queen stage, Lennert Van Eetvelt has now secured the overall win in the Gree-Tour of Guangxi. The team had to fend off a barrage of attacks in the final stage, but succeeded with flying colors. “You don’t win a World Tour race alone, the team worked incredibly hard,” Van Eetvelt said.

“It was a tricky day from start to finish,” Van Eetvelt recounted after the race. The final stage of the Gree-Tour of Guangxi featured a local circuit in Nanning, with a steep climb in each of the five laps acting as the decisive factor. “It got pretty tense at times. The team had to work really hard when a breakaway got away. And even in the final lap, the attacks kept coming. If Oscar Onley (Team DSM-Firmenich PostNL) – second in the standings – had finished second, or if someone had attacked in the last kilometer... So many scenarios could have played out, and we were under stress until the very end. Fortunately, I had a good day, and the rest of the team did an amazing job. Winning a World Tour race isn’t something you do on your own, and today proved that once again."

Opening the season with a stage race victory in the UAE Tour and closing it with another overall win – Van Eetvelt eventually claimed Guangxi with a five-second lead over Onley – is not something everyone can achieve. “Most years, I end my season somewhere in the rain, wondering what I’m even doing (laughs). But now, because I took a break from racing after the Vuelta, I actually feel really fresh. Just two weeks ago, I had a 30-hour training week, and I’m really happy that all that hard work so late in the year has paid off. I never expected to reach this level at the end of October. It gives me a lot of confidence after a difficult season. Plus, I can go on vacation without any worries, and that feels really good.”

Weather at the start city of Yizhou at 11:30 AM, local time: 27C (80F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the east at 11 km/hr (7 mph). There is a 40% chance of rain, declining to 15% at 1:00 PM.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner and new GC leader Lennert Van Eetvelt's Team Lotto Dstny.

Another victory for Lotto Dstny in China. After Lionel Taminiaux won stage one, Lennert Van Eetvelt has now claimed victory in stage five of the Gree-Tour of Guangxi. Van Eetvelt was the fastest in the queen stage, which finished with a steep climb. He is also the new leader in the general classification. "I am so happy with this win."

"I didn’t feel very good at first today. But when the team wants to work for you, you can’t complain, and you just have to give it everything you’ve got," Lennert Van Eetvelt said after the race. And that’s exactly what he did. Today’s stage in the Tour of Guangxi featured the first mountain stage, between Yizhou and Nongla. The stage was marked by an early breakaway of four riders, but thanks to the efforts of teams like Lotto Dstny, the gap gradually shrank as they approached the final climb. "When Tim Wellens attacked, I thought today wasn’t going to be my day. But the last kilometer is so tough (the final 1.2 kilometers have an average gradient of 14.8%, ed.), and I know how to keep my own pace on such sections, so I just kept going."

Van Eetvelt had already announced last weekend in Lombardy that he wanted to end his season on a high note after being forced to withdraw from the Vuelta. He finished a strong seventh in Italy and now gets to celebrate a major victory in China. "I am so happy with this win," he said, relieved.

Van Eetvelt is also the new leader in the GC. Lionel Taminiaux is fourth in the points classification. Tomorrow, Sunday, is the sixth and final stage of the Gree-Tour of Guangxi.

Stage 4 map & profile

Ethan Vernon (in red jersey) wins stage four but loses the GC lead.

Story of the Giro d'Italia volume 2

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Giro d'Italia, A Year-by-Year History of the Tour of Italy, Vol 2: 1971 - 2011 is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Jinchengjiang at 11:45 AM, local time: 27C (80F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the east at 8 km/hr (5 mph). There is a 30% chance of rain, dropping to 13% at 2:00 PM.

The race: Though Ethan Vernon won the stage, he lost the GC lead because of a 20-second time penalty.

Here's the report from stage winner Ethan Vernon's Team Israel-Premier Tech:

Two days after Corbin Strong won the Giro del Veneto and 24 hours after Vernon claimed his first UCI WorldTour victory in IPT colors in China, the British rider sprinted to an even more impressive victory on stage 4 in Jinchengjiang.

Vernon says: “I think that sometimes that first victory gives you the confidence you need, and you can back it up. I’ve had that a couple of times in my career now, where I’ve won back-to-back races. When you get the morale and the momentum going it leads to great results. I’m super happy with another win.”

The hardest stage of this year’s race to date was held under uncomfortably hot and humid conditions. A four-rider breakaway formed shortly after KM0 and it took a committed effort from IPT to bring the last of the quartet back with approximately 2.5 kilometers remaining. From there, the IPT train sprung into life, and after Vernon hit the front only one winner looked likely.

“It was a real team performance,” says DS Sep Vanmarcke. “Chris [Froome] and Guy [Sagiv] rode most of the day alone on the front, and they did it well. They controlled a very strong four-man breakaway.

“Later in the stage Nadav [Raisberg] also joined in with the work, and other teams started helping us out. Joe [Blackmore] then helped bring back the final few seconds.”

Vernon also singled out compatriot and teammate Jake Stewart for delivering another impressive lead-out.

“Every time he’s nailed it – I can trust him to deliver me to the right place, and I can’t wait to keep building on that going into next year, and to see if we can make it into a successful little duo,” he says.

Just behind Vernon, Riley Pickrell placed seventh. For the second day running, the finish line photos show Stewart celebrating a teammate’s victory: a picture-perfect ending to a textbook performance.

“Ethan showed how strong he is – a few guys tried to come alongside him but they couldn’t,” says Vanmarcke. “That, together with a seventh place for Riley and the way we kept the GC together going into tomorrow’s crucial stage for Joe means we’re really happy.”

One small disappointment came when the race commissaires gave Vernon a 20-second time penalty, which meant he relinquished the red leader’s jersey.

Vanmarcke adds: “Unfortunately, we lost the jersey because of a penalty during the stage. We have to accept it, but we’re obviously really happy with the second stage win, and now we look to the GC tomorrow.”

Weather at the finish city of Bama at 10:30 PM local time: 25C (77F), light rain, with the wind from the south-southeast at 10 km/hr (6 mph). The rain is forecast to last until 1:00 PM.

The race: Fabio Jakobsen (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), Emanuel Buchmann (Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe) & Jasper Stuyven (Lidl-Trek) did not start.

Early in the stage there was a giant crash. Vegard Stake Laengen (UAE Team Emirates), Milan Vader (Visma | Lease a Bike), Binyan Ma (China), Luke Plapp (Jayco AlUla), Jhonatan Narvaez (INEOS Grenadiers) & Mikel Honoré (EF Education-EasyPost) abandoned as a result.

The race was paused until the fallen riders could rejoin the peloton.

The stage was paused after the crash.

Here's the race report from stage winner and new GC leader Ethan Vernon's Team Israel-Premier Tech:

Third time lucky for IPT in China: having come close in the opening two stages of the Tour of Guangxi, the team’s riders dominated the stage 3 finish on Thursday. Ethan Vernon took his first UCI WorldTour victory in the team’s colors and Riley Pickrell finished third after a strong lead out from Jake Stewart.

Victory in Bama was Vernon’s second win of the season; it also moved him into the lead of the GC, points and best young rider standings.

The win was deserved reward for the British rider’s determination to end the road season on a high after he missed four months of it to focus on the track at the Olympic Games. Vernon and the GB team pursuit squad narrowly missed out on winning the gold medal in Paris.

“I’m really happy,” he said. “I’ve been struggling a bit after the Olympic Games to get back into it. In training, my shape is getting better and better but I just haven’t really had the results to prove it. I’ve had a good week so far and a few close calls so I’m really happy that I could end the season with a win.

“My original plan was to go to Track Worlds but after the Olympics, I was pretty down because it hadn’t gone to plan and really struggling. I started getting my rhythm back on the road and didn’t really fancy going back to the track and wanted to focus on the road. So I really pushed hard to be selected for the team here as I really believed that I could win a stage. I put some pressure on myself as I told the team this so I felt like I had to deliver.”

Ethan Vernon is the new GC leader.

Vernon, who placed fourth in Tuesday’s opening stage and seventh yesterday, revealed that the team’s strategy for the day was a two-pronged attack to maximize the chances of winning, either with him or his Canadian teammate Pickrell.

He added: “We changed the tactic a bit from previous days. We were leading Riley Pickrell out instead and I had a free card, which actually worked out really well as it ended up being an extended lead out.

“There was a slight headwind and maybe Riley opened up a bit too early out of Jake’s wheel, which gave me the advantage. What we did was perfect, so everyone is really happy.”

In addition to being Vernon’s second victory for IPT, following on from his triumph on the opening day of Tour des Alpes – Maritimes in February, it also continued a run dating back to 2022 that many riders would wish to have against their name.

“It’s my third WorldTour win,” Vernon added. ”I’ve had one each year so I didn’t want to lose that streak. I hope I can continue it in 2025.”

Third represents the best UCI WorldTour result of Pickrell’s career to date, coming at the end of a neo-pro season that also includes a win at the Sibiu Cycling Tour in Romania.

“We came here with two main goals: getting a stage win with either Ethan or Riley and going for a good GC result with Joe [Blackmore],” explains Sports Director Sep Vanmarcke.

“After the first two stages we were confident our guys could win today and achieve that first objective. Riley and Ethan are very fast, Jake is a great last man, and everybody played their part.

“Everything went perfectly. It was close: Ethan maybe left it a little bit late but it’s good he’s got long arms to stretch out at the finish. It’s a sweet victory; he was looking for that for a while, and we’re super happy that he’s done it. Now he will get a lot of confidence from this win.

“This is also the same for Riley: it’s his first WorldTour podium, and that’s a big thing.”

Weather at the finish city of Jingxi at 11:20 AM, local time: 22C (72F), light rain, with the wind from the east at 8 km/hr (6 mph). The chances for rain will decline to 54% at 2:00 PM.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Warre Vangheluwe's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Warre Vangheluwe delivered our team’s 34th win of the year with a brilliant late surge in the final 300 meters of the Tour of Guangxi stage 2. The Belgian, who earlier this season held off an entire peloton at the Quatre Jours de Dunkerque en route to his maiden pro success, punched the air as he crossed the finish line after producing an impressive turn of speed in Jingxi.

Up until that point, the day had been animated by a six-man breakaway which featured his Soudal Quick-Step teammate Martin Svrcek. The Slovak, a silver medalist at the U23 Worlds last month, was one of the only two riders in the group to remain off the front until 500 meters to go, when the peloton overhauled them after a massive effort, helped also by the slightly uphill roads in the final part of the stage.

Moments after the break was caught and a crash disrupted the bunch, Vangheluwe came out of nowhere and powered down the middle of the road to a spectacular win. It was Soudal Quick-Step’s eighth stage victory at the Tour of Guangxi, a record for a team since the race was created.

Here's another shot of the finish. Photo: Sprint Cycling

“I came to China with high expectations and it’s just incredible I got this victory. I trained hard at home and was very motivated, I even told my friends that I will come back only after I get a win here, so I’m delighted I could do it. My job was to lead out Luke Lamperti, but he got boxed in, and the moment the peloton caught Martin I launched my sprint and gave my all to finish it off. I am so happy with this victory”, Warre said after the stage which saw teammate Martin Svrcek move to tenth place overall.

Stage 1 map & profile

Lotto Dstny's Lionel Taminiaux (on right, head down) wins the first stage photo finish sprint.

Melanoma: It Started with a Freckle

David L. Stanley's masterful telling of his bout with skin cancer Melanoma: It Started with a Freckle is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the start/finish city of Fangchenggang at 11:20 AM, local time: 28C (83F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the north-northeast at 14 km/hr (9 mph). At 2:00 PM there is a 72% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from winner Lionel Taminiaux's Team Lotto Dstny.

Celebration in China, as Lionel Taminiaux has secured his first win for the team. Taminiaux was the fastest in the bunch sprint of the first stage of the Gree-Tour of Guangxi, also claiming the leader's jersey.

The first stage in Guangxi—the final WorldTour race of the season, by the way—started and finished in Fangchenggang and was marked by an early breakaway of two riders. Only in the final stretch were they caught by the chasing peloton. In the expected bunch sprint, Lionel Taminiaux proved to be the fastest. Taminiaux, who has been with Lotto Dstny since the beginning of this year, claimed his first win for the team. He is also the first leader of the six-day race in China.

Another view of the sprint finish.

"I’m particularly happy to win this first stage here in Guangxi. The fact that it comes with the leader's jersey makes the victory even sweeter. I was able to launch my sprint well. One rider was still ahead of me initially, but with 50 meters to go, I managed to come out of his wheel perfectly. I had plenty of space and stayed in front. I was here last year too, but then I finished fifth and sixth. I came here to do better, and I’ve succeeded right away."
