Weather at the finish city of Helsingør at 1:25 PM, local time: 24C (76F), fair, with the wind from the southeast at 21 km/hr (13 mph). There is a 2% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from Team Soudal Quick-Step.

The last stage of the Danmark Rundt scheduled a completely flat and non-technical 16.1km individual time trial, and Soudal Quick-Step was again prominent, after the pair of victories that Fabio Jakobsen racked up on the previous days of the competition.

One of the early starters, Josef Cerny put up a solid ITT that allowed him to go into the hot seat for an hour, before his result was improved by one of the home riders. Later into the stage, it was the turn of Casper Pedersen to show again what he’s capable of on a course like this, and the Dane didn’t disappoint, producing a solid effort that netted him seventh on the stage classification in Helsingør.

Fabio Jakobsen (white jersey) wins stage 4.

Weather at the finish city of Bagsvaerd at 2:00 PM, local time: 22C (81F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the east at 13 km/hr (8 mph). There is just a 4% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Fabio Jakobsen's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

For the 11th time in the last twelve years – the only exception being 2020, when many races got cancelled due to the pandemic – Soudal Quick-Step made it to 40 successes, the most recent milestone being recorded Friday afternoon, courtesy of a truly unstoppable Fabio Jakobsen.

The European Champion confirmed he is the best sprinter at the Danmark Rundt, winning stage four by a clear margin after another superb lead-out. If two days ago it was Casper Pedersen who launched him to victory, this time Michael Mørkøv was on lead-out duties, and the experienced Dane showed again there’s a reason why he’s one of the best in the business.

Coming off Michael’s wheel with around 200 meters to go, Jakobsen blasted past all the other riders as he dashed to his 45th victory in the pro ranks and his seventh of the season – a result that puts the 26-year-old Dutchman in the Danmark Rundt points classification jersey with one stage to go – the individual time trial in Helsingør.

“I am happy with my two victories here this week, which wouldn’t have been possible without the help of my teammates, to whom I want to thank for their incredible work. Having such a great squad around you gives a lot of confidence and makes it a lot easier in the finale, and I am delighted I could repay their confidence and amazing effort. The fact that today’s success was Soudal Quick-Step’s 40th win of the season is just the icing on the cake”, Fabio said after the stage that concluded in Bagsvaerd.

Story of the Tour de France Volume 2

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, Vol 2: 1976 - 2018 is available in print, Kindle eBook & Audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Vejle at 1:50 PM, local time: 17C (63F), cloudy, with the wind from the northeast at 6 km/hr (4 mph). There is a 1% chance of rain, rising to 60% at 5:00.

The race: Here's the report from Team Soudal Quick-Step.

It was an action-packed day at the five-stage race, with the peloton tackling the famous Vejle stage, the very one that Remco Evenepoel used to build his success on two years ago, at his first outing in Denmark. Just like back then, the attacks began coming early, as soon as the bunch caught the breakaway that had animated the day for more than 150 kilometers.

On one of the many climbs, the group split leaving only nine men – including Casper Pedersen and Martin Svrcek – at the front, with a small gap that in the space of a couple of kilometers grew to almost 40 seconds. The Figueroa Champions Classic winner tried his luck and briefly got away, but the others responded and made sure the group remained as one ahead of the final lap.

It was there that Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) made his move and soloed to victory and the leader’s jersey. Around one minute later, Tim Declercq came home and concluded the stage as the best-placed Soudal Quick-Step rider, a result that puts him in the top 20 overall before the individual time trial in Bagsvaerd.

Tour of Flanders, the Inside Story

Les Woodland's book Tour of Flanders: The Inside Story - The rocky roads of the Ronde van Vlaanderen is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Silkeborg at 1:45 PM, local time: 18C (65F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 14 km/hr (9 mph). There is a 75% chance of rain, dropping to 7% at 4:00.

The race: Here's the report from fourth-place Tobias Lund Andresen's Team dsm-firmenich.

A day destined to end in a fast finale, Tobias Lund Andresen once again showed his quick legs with a fourth place finish into the town of Silkeborg.

Like the opening day of racing, a breakaway was able to establish itself early on with all Team dsm-firmenich riders in the bunch; looking to conserve energy to support sprint finish Lund Andresen for the finale. As the kilometres ticked by the gap to the break fell and heading towards the local circuits, Enzo Leijnse and Tim Naberman brought the team forward, staying safe in case of any potential crosswind danger which in the end never materialiased.

Florian Stork, Martijn Tusveld and Marco Brenner positioned Lund Andresen who was attentive in following dangerous moves on the penultimate and final time up the climb. Any attackers would be brought back and it was clear the race was heading for a sprint finish. The fight for position was hectic and Brenner tried to bring Lund Andresen forward but coming out of the last corner the Team dsm-firmenich riders were in around tenth wheel. Unleashing a strong finish and fighting to the line, Lund Andresen passed several riders on his way to fourth place as Jakobsen took the win ahead.

Lund Andresen said: “Today was stressful because of the chance of crosswind the whole day. We were fighting to stay towards the front to be proactive if something was going to happen. We entered the laps all the way in the front as planned, to make it easier for me to preserve energy towards the sprint. On the last lap I followed the move to stay in front and be sure to make it over in the first group. With a kilometre to go Marco found his way back to me to try and set me up for the sprint. In the end I had to open my sprint with 300 metres to go because we were too far back but almost made it onto the podium. I had amazing legs so hopefully we can get more tomorrow.”

Team dsm-firmenich coach Roy Curvers added: “Again it was another good day of teamwork setting up Tobias for a sprint. Unfortunately, the boys got a little distanced from the front of the bunch; so Tobi and Marco had to come from too far in the final straight, but with a real fast sprint Tobi was again able to grab another top five finish.”

Tuesday, August 15: Stage 1, Aalborg - Aalborg, 169.9 km

Stage 1 map & profile

Soren Waerenskjold has time to sit up and celebrate his win with the thundering herd six seconds back.

Cycling's World ChampionshipsLes Woodland's book Cycling's World Championships: The Inside Story is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the start/finish city of Aalborg at 1:20 PM, local time: 21C (70F), rain showers, with the wind from the south-southwest at 10 km/hr (6 mph). There is a 50% chance that the rain will continue through the afternoon.

The race Here's the report from second-place Fabio Jakobsen's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Danmark Rundt, the country’s most important race, got underway Tuesday afternoon with a flat stage held around Aalborg. On paper, it should have been a pretty straightforward day, with the sprinters’ teams controlling the breakaway and a mass gallop to decide the first leader of the competition, but it turned out to be more complicated.

The main reason for this was that once the six-man breakaway was reeled in – in part, thanks to a mammoth work of the Soudal Quick-Step boys – attacks began coming left and right. In the last 30 kilometers of the stage, these countless accelerations and a crash that ended up splitting the bunch played a huge role in the final outcome. Despite an incredibly long pull of Casper Pedersen – who made his return from injury at his home race – in the closing kilometers, late attacker Soren Waerenskjold (Uno-X) made it, taking the win by a handful of seconds.

Fabio Jakobsen was the fastest rider of the chasing group, taking runner-up behind the Norwegian for what was his ninth podium finish of the season, a result that puts him in second place on the general classification. The race will now continue with an undulating stage to Silkeborg, but without Mauri Vansevenant. The Belgian was among those involved in the crash and had to abandon the race, but fortunately only with some abrasions and surface injuries as consequence.
