Austrian cycling fans had to wait 13 years for an overall victory at the Lidl Tour of Austria (formerly the *Österreich Rundfahrt*). For Tour de France stage winner Konrad, it was a satisfying conclusion: "I recently had to withdraw from the Tour de Suisse due to illness. My form wasn't perfect at the Lidl Tour of Austria, but today—in front of so many spectators—it was a satisfying finish."

Gregor Mühlberger Makes Cycling History
Austrian cycling fans had to wait 13 years for a home victory in the tour since Riccardo Zoidl’s win. The 32-year-old Gregor Mühlberger—the third tour winner from Lower Austria—is the first overall winner riding for the national team since Harald Morscher in 1994. Gerrit Glomser claimed two stage wins in the 2003 tour, a feat Mühlberger also matched during this event. Furthermore, he is the second Austrian since Roman Humenberger in 1971 to wear the leader's jersey from the first stage to the last. His success was no coincidence; it reflects his performances over the past decade and, of course, his 15th-place overall finish at this year's Giro d’Italia, where he played a pivotal role as a key support rider in Felix Gall’s second-place overall finish.

"Mübsi" is a two-time national champion in the elite category and today celebrated his fifth stage race victory overall. His record also includes prestigious stage wins at the Tour of the Alps, the Deutschland Tour, the BinckBank Tour, and the Sibiu Cycling Tour (twice). Another standout achievement was his victory at the German classic *Rund um Köln* in 2017.

For the rider—who has made Salzburg his home—a dream came true today: "I want to thank my entire team; they sacrificed so much for me. You can't win anything in a stage race with such a strong field without a team." He said it wasn't until after the final climb to Doppler Hütte, just before reaching Vienna, that the reality of the tour victory truly sank in: "This isn't just any triumph for me. Winning the biggest race on home soil is so special. We’re all staying in Vienna tonight; my whole family and many friends are here, of course. We’re going to celebrate properly together."

The Jersey Wearers
Gregor Mühlberger won the general classification, finishing 1 minute 25 seconds ahead of UAE pro Kevin Vermaerke and 1 minute 40 seconds ahead of Bauke Mollema (Lidl–Trek). Vorarlberg pro Philipp Hofbauer moved up to 14th place today, finishing as the second-best Austrian rider, just as he did last year. As the peloton approached the Porscheberg climb, the major teams took control; the last lone breakaway rider, Pekala, was caught with 20 kilometers still to race, sparking a flurry of attacks.

On the Porscheberg, Gregor Mühlberger broke away with three other riders. It was only in the final kilometers before Steyr that seven more riders managed to bridge the gap to the leaders. The group of eleven battled for the stage win in the final sprint, with Italian rider Andrea Bagioli (Lidl-Trek) claiming his first victory of the race. The runner-up from the Tour of Lombardy beat UAE pro Kevin Vermaerke and the best young rider, Andrew August (Ineos). Gregor Mühlberger took no risks in the sprint, rolling across the finish line at the back of the lead group.

"We were determined to get the stage win! The first few days were tough, but today everything came together for the team. Everyone says tomorrow's final stage to Vienna—just over 100 kilometers—will be easy. But that’s exactly why many teams will try something tomorrow—and we’re ready for it," Bagioli rejoiced at the finish.

Gregor Mühlberger Nears Career Highlight
After Stage 4, Gregor Mühlberger leads the general classification by 1 minute 25 seconds over UAE pro Kevin Vermaerke and 1 minute 40 seconds over Bauke Mollema (Lidl-Trek). "It was an absolutely spine-tingling atmosphere. It was incredible to see so many people there—friends, acquaintances, and, of course, my whole family. The Porscheberg was a cauldron of noise; it gave me so much motivation. At the top, after the sprint classification, I decided not to take any more risks and just bring it home safely. Two stage wins are a dream come true, and now we’re fully focused on winning the overall tour in Vienna."

When asked about the significance of a potential overall victory, he said: "Emotionally, the national championship title—with my wife in the team car supporting me—was the greatest moment. But from a sporting perspective, nothing beats winning the overall title at my home race."

There were some changes in the standings today: Kevin Vermaerke has moved ahead of Mühlberger in the Škoda points classification thanks to his second-place finish, while Poland’s Piotr Pękala took the lead in the Mautner-Markhof mountains classification through aggressive riding. Andrew August (Netcompany INEOS) will wear the DAN Küchen jersey for the best young professional on tomorrow’s stage to Vienna, and Philipp Hofbauer (Team Vorarlberg)—sitting in 15th place and as the second-best Austrian—will carry the Gebrüder Weiss jersey for the best Austrian rider to Vienna on behalf of Gregor Mühlberger.

On the third stage of the Lidl Tour of Austria, American rider Neilson Powless celebrated his first stage victory in the Alpine nation during his debut appearance there. Overall leader Gregor Mühlberger faced a few anxious moments between East Tyrol and Salzburg, but ultimately, he and his national team teammates kept the situation firmly under control.

Covering 189.5 kilometers and 2,315 meters of elevation gain, today’s third stage connected Lienz in East Tyrol with St. Johann/Alpendorf in Salzburg—a location hosting a stage finish for the 16th time. After an initial loop around Lienz featuring a sprint classification point, the route headed toward Salzburg via the Felbertauern Pass. The stage winner would ultimately be decided on the infamous final climb to Alpendorf near St. Johann: a 2.6-kilometer ascent with a maximum gradient of 14.8 percent, known as "the Wall."

The pace was furious right from the start in East Tyrol, signaling a high-speed stage. Eventually, a group of 22 riders broke away at the Felbertauern Pass. The group included several big names—such as Giro d’Italia winner Tao Geoghegan Hart and his Lidl-Trek teammate Héctor Álvarez; UAE professionals Jan Christen, Portuguese champion Antonio Morgado, and Igor Arrieta; Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost); national champion Michael Gogl (Alpecin-Premier Tech); Patrick Gamper (Team Jayco AlUla); former tour winner Riccardo Zoidl (Hrinkow Advarics); as well as Sebastian Putz (national team) and Thomas Tichler (WSA KTM Graz). After 100 kilometers of racing, their lead stood at around three minutes. However, the national team, riding for overall leader Gregor Mühlberger, kept the situation in hand and maintained control of the race throughout.

Anxious moments for Mühlberger
The breakaway group splintered at the Buchberg climb, located about 50 kilometers from the finish. Top professionals Neilson Powless and Igor Arrieta broke away from the peloton, building a lead of over four minutes. Spaniard Arrieta—a Giro stage winner this year—was trailing Mühlberger by only 5:51 minutes in the general classification at the time, posing a genuine threat to the Lower Austrian. Meanwhile, in the main pack, riders from the national team and Team Vorarlberg—later joined by Lidl-Trek—set the pace. The final 20 kilometers shaped up to be a head-to-head battle for the stage win, while the national team breathed a sigh of relief as the gap to the leaders steadily narrowed.

Powless wins duel for stage victory
The two leaders reached the final climb to St. Johann/Alpendorf together, where American Neilson Powless secured the victory in a thrilling sprint to the finish. Behind Igor Arrieta, his UAE teammate Jan Christen took third place, finishing 27 seconds back. Michael Gogl was the top-placed Austrian, finishing seventh. "Racing here in Austria is truly amazing. The stages are beautiful and the landscapes fantastic; I think I’ll come back here with my family soon." Regarding the win, he added: "I was very cautious in the finale so I wouldn't hit my limits too early. A great victory for me," said the 29-year-old, who won the 2023 Étoile de Bessèges and triumphed at Dwars door Vlaanderen last year.

Gregor Mühlberger retains overall lead
He took the tense moments regarding the gap to Igor Arrieta in his stride: "I told my guys that the riders behind me were the ones under pressure, since they didn't want to lose their podium spots. Still, we had to try to keep everything under control. I’m happy with the result. Now we all need to recover well." Tomorrow, on the stage around Steyr, Mühlberger is essentially racing on home turf: "I’ll definitely be waving to plenty of friends and acquaintances tomorrow—and they’ll get to see me suffer out on the course around my hometown!"

Gregor Mühlberger also leads the Škoda points classification and the Mautner-Markhof mountains classification. Gregor Mühlberger of the Austrian national team continues to dominate the 75th Lidl Tour of Austria: on the Glockner stage, he celebrated his second stage victory in just 24 hours, crowning himself "Glockner King" once again—a title he previously held in 2014. The Lower Austrian rider extended his overall lead to one and a half minutes and is also dominating the mountains and points classifications.

Marking the 75th anniversary of the Lidl Tour of Austria, today’s Glockner stage—running from Bad Kleinkirchheim to the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe on the Grossglockner—featured a special anniversary of its own at an altitude of 2,369 meters: 170 years ago, in 1856, Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth visited this unique viewpoint in the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park for the first time. The question of the day was: who would be crowned the "Emperor of the Tour of Austria"? After all, both the stage victory and the title of Glockner King were up for grabs.

This second stage marked a debut for Bad Kleinkirchheim, Carinthia, as a stage host. After starting in this winter sports hotspot, the riders covered 188.8 kilometers and 2,914 vertical meters en route to the Grossglockner, where the finale began on the 16.5-kilometer climb to the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe—a climb reaching a maximum gradient of 14.3 percent. Notably, this was only the fourth time the location has served as a Tour finish, following 1977, 1990, and 2010.

After approximately 50 kilometers, a group of nine riders successfully broke away. Among them were two Austrians—Lukas Hatz (WSA KTM Graz) and Maximilian Schmidbauer (Schwingshandl Intralogistics)—as well as the German rider Tobias Nolde (riding for the Vorarlberg team), who leads the mountains classification. The Carinthian team ARBÖ Kärnten Sport Feld am See also had a rider at the front in the form of New Zealander Christian Rush. As the race passed through the Mölltal—where riders from the Austrian national team, including overall leader Gregor Mühlberger, shouldered the workload in the peloton against a strong headwind—the breakaway's lead grew to over four minutes.

Ineos pushes the pace on the Glockner
The breakaway riders were caught just before the start of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, marking the beginning of the race's final phase. The peloton quickly dwindled to a handful of professionals under the fierce pace set by the WorldTour team Ineos Grenadiers; Gregor Mühlberger found himself riding solo after the first few hairpins but held his own admirably at the front. In the final eight kilometers, a leading quartet formed, consisting of Ineos pro Carlos Rodriguez, Paul Double (Team Jayco Alula), Bauke Mollema (Lidl – Trek), and a strong-riding Gregor Mühlberger.

Mühlberger attacks relentlessly
Then, 4.5 kilometers from the finish, it happened: 32-year-old Mühlberger went all-in with an unstoppable attack. He quickly built a lead and claimed victory in front of a large crowd, finishing 1 minute and 10 seconds ahead of James Shaw (EF Education – EasyPost) and Kevin Vermaerke (UAE Team Emirates). Bauke Mollema (Lidl – Trek) finished a disappointing fourth. Philipp Hofbauer (Team Vorarlberg) rode a strong race, finishing 13th and securing the spot of second-best Austrian. "I’m absolutely thrilled, even though the final kilometers felt very long. The headwind played a major role, and the last 400 meters of elevation gain were brutal. I didn't want to make my move too early, and for a while, Paul Double and I were on the same page during the closing kilometers. But when he started struggling, I knew I had to seize the opportunity," said Mühlberger at the finish line, where he also thanked his teammates: "The team did an incredible job. I had full support right from the start, which saved me a lot of energy. Now, over the coming days, we’ll try to keep our rivals in check as a team."

In the general classification, Gregor Mühlberger now leads Kevin Vermaerke by 1 minute 31 seconds and Bauke Mollema by 1 minute 41 seconds. The Salzburg-based rider also leads the Škoda points classification and the Mautner-Markhof mountains classification. Tomorrow, Andrew August (Netcompany INEOS) will wear the DAN Küchen jersey for the best young rider for the first time, while Philipp Hofbauer (Team Vorarlberg) will wear the Gebrüder Weiss jersey as the best-placed Austrian.

The 75th anniversary edition of the Lidl Tour of Austria could not have gotten off to a better start for the host nation: Lower Austrian rider Gregor Mühlberger claimed victory in front of thousands of spectators in Gamlitz, southern Styria, and will wear the red-and-white leader's jersey during tomorrow's Glockner stage. National champion Michael Gogl rounded out the strong Austrian performance by finishing sixth.

As expected, the first stage of the Lidl Tour of Austria—running from Graz to Gamlitz in southern Styria—proved to be a grueling opener. Covering 188 kilometers and featuring a challenging 2,716 meters of elevation gain, the route took riders through three distinct wine-growing regions—Schilcher, Sausal, and the South Styrian Wine Road—for the first time in the Tour's 75-year history. Things heated up immediately after the start at Graz’s Mariahilferplatz as the riders approached the Voitsberg sprint classification. Riders from the local Styrian team, WSA KTM Graz, were particularly keen to join the day's breakaway group.

However, it was four other riders who managed to break away shortly before the first King of the Mountains climb (Schilcherweinstraße) at the 40-kilometer mark: Luxembourg’s Loic Bettendorff (Hrinkow Advarics) and three Germans—Tobias Nolde (Team Vorarlberg), Tim Gloßner, and last year’s road race champion Mauro Brenner. Behind them, Christoph Holzer (WSA KTM Graz) and Czech rider Filip Lepka (Schwingshandl Intralogistics) attempted to bridge the gap. The peloton quickly fell behind, conceding a deficit of over eight minutes.

Halfway through the race—amidst the rolling hills of southern Styria, with their sweeping vistas and impressive panoramas—Holzer and Lepka were reabsorbed by the main field as WorldTour teams ramped up the pace. With 60 kilometers remaining until the finish in Gamlitz—where thousands of spectators were eagerly awaiting the riders—the gap stood at five minutes and began to shrink steadily. After crossing the finish line in Gamlitz for the first time, the riders tackled a 40-kilometer final lap featuring some truly punishing climbs through the vineyards.

As the leading quartet broke up, the peloton was trailing by just two minutes. Then, the action came thick and fast: on the final long climb—just as Nolde and Brenner were being reeled in—a group of eleven professionals surged to the front, including national team rider Gregor Mühlberger and national champion Michael Gogl.

Mühlberger wins solo
The leaders were heading toward the finish in Gamlitz when Gregor Mühlberger launched an attack and broke clear with eleven kilometers to go. The Salzburg-based rider celebrated a comfortable victory in Gamlitz, finishing eleven seconds ahead of Kevin Vermaerke (UAE Emirates XRG); Hector Alvarez (Lidl–Trek) took third place, finishing ahead of his teammates Bauke Mollema and Andrea Bagioli.

"The team worked brilliantly for our first outing together. I had great legs right from the start and was able to launch a successful attack in the finale. I just hope I didn't dig too deep before tomorrow's Glockner stage. I'm absolutely thrilled with my first stage race victory and the leader's jersey," said the beaming winner at the finish line; he now holds a 15-second lead over Vermaerke in the general classification.

National champion Michael Gogl (Alpecin-Premier Tech) also rode a fantastic race: "It was really tough, and fortunately, I had scouted the stage beforehand. Congratulations to Gregor, who was by far the strongest rider today." Incidentally, the last time an Austrian national team rider won a stage was in 2002, when Hans-Peter Obwaller triumphed on the Kitzbüheler Horn.

Local Continental teams also delighted
German rider Tobias Nolde (Team Vorarlberg) is the first leader of the Mautner-Markhof King of the Mountains classification. In addition to the general classification, 32-year-old Gregor Mühlberger also leads the Skoda points classification. Breakaway rider Loïc Bettendorff (Hrinkow-Advarics) sits in fourth place. Hector Alvarez (Lidl – Trek) claimed the DAN Küchen jersey for the best young rider today.
