Weather at the start/finish city of Lienz at 2:00 PM, local time: 13C (56F), cloudy, with the wind from the east-northeast at 13 km/hr (8 mph). There is just a 4% chance of rain.

The stage: The Tour of the Alps showdown comes in a compact but potentially explosive 112.2 km stage starting and finishing in Lienz. After 37 km of flat racing, riders face a new challenge: an unprecedented approach to the Bannberg featuring 15 hairpins over 4.5 km at a brutal 10% average gradient. A rolling section follows before a second assault on the Bannberg.

The classic descent leads to the valley floor and the day's final challenge: the Stronach climb, which proved decisive in 2022. Its 3 kilometers of narrow roads average a leg-breaking 13% and could once again determine the overall winner. From the summit, just 10 km of racing remain to the finish in Lienz's Hauptplatz.

The final 3 kilometers provide a straight, flat run-in until the last 300 meters, where a right-left combination leads into the Hauptplatz. Here, in the heart of Lienz, the 2025 Tour of the Alps will crown its champion.

The race: Early in the stage Simone Raccani (JCL Team UKYO) abandoned

Here's the stage five report from GC second place Thymen Arensman's Team INEOS Grenadiers:

Thymen Arensman battled to second overall on the final day of the Tour of the Alps after a fantastic GC showdown against Michael Storer.

Arensman fought for second place as he chased the aggressive Storer for the final third of the race after the Tudor Pro Cycling rider attacked on the steep Banneberg climb.

The race leader fought valiantly to limit his losses, but Storer was able to extend his advantage on the final two climbs, with Arensman crossing the line one minute and 30 seconds behind despite a determined performance.

The peloton at kilometer 24.

A break of 11 escaped in the early stages of the 112.7km stage, after good work from the Grenadiers had controlled the break and prevented counter-attacks.

However, Storer attacked from the main bunch with 34km to go after a leadout from his teammate Florian Stork on the second ascent of the Banneberg, forcing Arensman to respond to the increased pace.

The Australian then attacked again, opening up a 20 second gap which he increased to over a minute with help from teammate Lucas Eiksson in the valley before the final climb.

As Nicolas Prodhomme (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team) took the stage win, Storer finished eighth to take the GC win, with Arensman a minute and a half back in ninth to finish second overall.

The final GC podium, from left: Thymen Arensman (2nd), Michael Storer (1st) & Derek Gee (3rd)

Thymen Arensman:
“Chapeau to Michael, his team did a really good job. My team also did a really good job and we tried to create the best scenario possible for me to make it a hard race and get the punch out of the legs. Michael was just so strong when he attacked. I also felt really strong and I’m really proud of my performance. I had a big gap on the other GC riders so I’m just proud of my performance. I think it’s a well deserved second place.”

Stage 4 map & profile

Thymen Arensman wins the stage and takes over the GC lead with one stage to go.

Weather at the finish city of Obertilliach at 2:15 PM, lcoal time: 9C (49F), cloudy, with the wind from the north at 11 km/hr (7 mph). There is a 25% chance of rain.

The stage: Stage four, a 160 km route starting in Sillian, Tirol, Austria, just a few kilometers from the Italian border, could shake up the standings. After the start, the race immediately returns to Italy to climb to Lake Misurina. A long descent sets up the brutal Passo Sant'Antonio, followed by the more manageable Kreuzbergpass/Passo Monte Croce Comelico.

The route briefly touches Innichen/San Candido before returning to Tirol for a difficult finale. Three climbs come in quick succession: the Anras Oberried KOM, the Tessenberg ascent, and the Kartitscher Sattel KOM - the latter featuring a particularly steep middle section. From its summit, just 7 km remain, mostly downhill to Obertilliach.

The final 3 km follow a wide, gently descending road until the flamme rouge. After the biathlon center, the gradient kicks up again at 4-5% for the uphill finish in Obertilliach's center.

The race: Hugh Carthy (EF Education-EasyPost) did not start. Early on Anton Palzer (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) abandoned and later Geoffrey Bouchard (Decatlon AG2R La Mondiale) did as well.

Here's the stage four report from winner Thymen Arensman's Team INEOS Grenadiers:

Thymen Arensman took an incredible solo win from over 80km out on the fourth stage of the Tour of the Alps, catapulting into the GC lead and taking his first win as a Grenadier.

With one final stage to go, Arensman will ride in the green leader’s jersey tomorrow after gaining an 11 second advantage on the GC.

Stage 4 gets started.

The Grenadiers were active all day, with Kim Heiduk in a six-man break within the first 10km. Heiduk rode strongly, with the group whittling down to four and racking up a four minute lead, before being reeled back by the bunch around the 80km mark.

The peloton immediately counterattacked on the descent, before Arensman made his decisive move and attacked solo.

Tackling two categorised climbs on his own, Arensman continued to keep the lead, showing his strength and determination as the weather conditions worsened.

Early in the stage.

With 20km to go, it looked like Derek Gee (Israel - Premier Tech) was closing in, and GC leader Michael Storer (Tudor Pro Cycling) was less than a minute behind, but Arensman had a second wind and continued to power up the final climb of the day.

Reaching the summit with just 6km remaining, the flying Dutchman descended with ease, before riding up the final kicker to Obertilliach and taking the win by a minute and 18 seconds.

Thymen Arensman:
"The start was super cold, and I was also really cold but I know I go quite well in the cold weather. Straight after the descent, everyone was really cold and Lidl-Trek lit it up and then it was only a small group left. It was quite tactical and I just figured ‘why not, just send it’. I went and I for a moment I thought ‘it’s actually quite far on my own’, but I felt pretty good. I knew everybody was tired from the cold weather. I kept pacing myself and fuelling well. It’s unbelievable.

"I remember the stage from 2022, together with Romain Bardet and actually also Michael Storer from the GC group and we rode away. Romain took the GC and I took the young rider classification, and now the green jersey. Let’s try to hold it tomorrow. It’s going to be hard but I think everybody will feel the legs after today."

Weather at the finish city of Innichen/San Candido at 2:00 PM, local time: 12C (55F), cloudy, with the wind from the southeast at 18 km/hr (10 mph). There is a 45% chance of rain.

The stage: Speed should dominate the opening 55 km of Stage 3, as the 145,5 km South Tyrolean route begins with an extended flat section out of Sterzing/Vipiteno-Ratschings/Racines. The race's character changes dramatically at the first-time inclusion of the Untermoi/Antermoia climb. A fast, flowing descent on wide roads leads to the day's major challenge: Furkelpass/Passo Furcia, whose final 4 km feature relentlessly steep, double-digit gradients.

After descending from Furkelpass/Passo Furcia, riders get their first glimpse of the finish in Innichen/San Candido before embarking on a decisive 21 km circuit. The circuit's main obstacle, Vierschachberg/Monte Versciaco, packs a serious punch over its 5 km length. From its summit, roughly 11 km from the finish, the route traces a twisting path along the ridgeline before plunging down a technical descent into Innichen/San Candido, in the 3 Zinnen Dolomites/3 Cime Dolomiti area.

The descent ends 2.6 km from the finish line, followed by a flat section until reaching the town. The last 1.5 km wind through the historic center, where a pair of cobbled turns lead into the finishing straight.

The race: Yuhi Todome (EF Education-EasyPost) & Alessandro Iacchi (Solution Tech-Vini Fantini) did not start.

Here's the report from stage winner Marco Frigo's Team Israel-Premier Tech:

The wait is over for Marco Frigo: in his third season as a professional, the 25-year-old today claimed his first career victory, producing an unforgettable solo performance of over 70 kilometers to win stage 3 of the Tour of the Alps in Innichen.

Frigo attacked from a 21-rider breakaway group on the approach to the category 1 Furkelpass and impressively never looked like being caught by the peloton despite undulating terrain in the second half of the stage.

The Italian had previously finished third (from a three-rider breakaway) on stage 15 of his Giro d’Italia debut in 2023, before being caught inside the final kilometer of Tour de la Provence stage 2 last year. Today, however, he was not going to be denied.

The peloton early in the stage.

He says: “It has been a great day. We knew it could be a breakaway day today and we paid attention to that. Luckily I entered a big group, but big groups can be chaos. I knew it was probably a good idea to make the selection from distance.

“Actually, the attacks today were me trying to test the legs because I’m here at this race for a bit of preparation. I didn’t believe in the first part [that I could win], but once the gap was increasing I did everything I could.”

In a season of long attacks, it is believed that Frigo’s successful solo effort today is the longest of the lot.

“I remembered what happened at the Vuelta last year [when he was second on stage 6] in the same situation – Ben O’Connor attacked from far and he went to the finish,” he adds. “I had good legs, of course, and it was good to race at my pace.

A great day for IPT was enhanced when Derek Gee finished third in the reduced bunch sprint 19 seconds behind Frigo, capping his strongest performance of the race so far.

GC leader Michael Storer. Sirotti photo

Sports Director Oscar Guerrero says: “It was a very nice day for the team. We knew that a breakaway was an option today, but we also thought that other teams would want to accelerate on the climbs, making it hard for a breakaway.

“Only with the legs that Marco had today was this performance possible. In the end, nobody else from the breakaway could follow him. Marco was amazing – he has tried so many times to win a race like this before, he has been second, third, and even caught on the finish line as he was in Provence last year, but today he was so impressive. A long attack, with big climbs, and he deserves it.

“I think this will be just the start of Marco’s victories. This will give him a lot of motivation and confidence, and he knows how to move in breakaways. He is very smart, and he showed this today with the timing of the attack.

“Of course, it wasn’t just about Marco today. Derek showed that he is getting better each day, and we are all happy to see him finish third. We gave Matthew [Riccitello] a free card on the final climb, and he showed that he is climbing really well, too.”

Weather at the finish city of Sterzing/Vipiteno at 2:30 PM, local time: 18C (65F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the southeast at 10 km/hr (6 mph). There is a 7% chance of rain.

The stage: Stage 2 from Mezzolombardo to Sterzing/Vipiteno-Ratschings/Racines stands as the race's queen stage, covering 178 km and tackling 3,750 meters of climbing. From the flat start in Mezzolombardo (Trentino), riders face the Petersberg/Monte San Pietro KOM followed by a series of punchy climbs and descents - a combination designed to wear down the peloton before the decisive latter half.

A long false flat leads the race into Südtirol/Alto Adige and the town of Sterzing/Vipiteno, where riders tackle two laps of a 16 km circuit. Each lap features the testing climb to Obertelfes/Telves di Sopra - 4 km averaging 7% with sections over 10% - followed by a technical descent that ends 8 kilometers from the finish.

While the final kilometers are fast, several wide roundabouts demand attention. A sharp right-hander marks the last kilometer, followed by a sweeping left curve. The finish straight in central Sterzing/Vipiteno rises slightly, with the final meters contested on distinctive porphyry cobblestones.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner and new GC leader Michael Storer's Tudor Pro Cycling Team.

Tudor Pro Cycling came into the Tour of the Alps with a strong squad built for climbing—and they made their intentions clear right from the start. After a solid showing in Stage 1, where Florian Stork finished 5th and Michael Storer took 7th, the team backed it up with a strong performance on Stage 2.

Stage one winner & GC leader Giulio Ciccone at the rider presentation ceremony before the stage start.

Covering 178 kilometers from Mezzolombardo to Vipiteno and featuring over 4,000 meters of climbing, Stage 2 was a true test of the climbers. With just 11 kilometers remaining and the front group reduced to fewer than 10 riders, the Australian launched his decisive move.

Young rider classification leader Paul Seixas (white jersey) with teammates before the start.

His first attack came at 12km to go, drawing out only three riders. Then, just one kilometer later - 600 meters from the summit — he went all-in. Cresting the final KOM with a 10-second advantage, he held his lead through a 5km descent before extending it further on the flat section to the finish.

Tucked into a full aero position aboard his new Teammachine R Mpc, Storer powered ahead and benefitted by the lack of organization in the chargers group.

He crossed the finish line solo, celebrating his second victory of the season.

Michael Storer: “I was feeling really, really good today. In the second half of the stage, I realized I might be the strongest in the group, so I decided to go for it. I didn’t look back much—I just put my head down and gave it everything.”

With a winning gap of 41 seconds and a 10-second time bonus, Storer also pulled on the leader’s jersey.

“It’s great to be leading now, but we know the race is far from over. We know that we still have three hard stages to go and many high quality riders who also want to win this race.”

Monday, April 21: Stage 1, San Lorenzo Dorsino - San Lorenzo Dorsino, 148.5 km

Stage 1 map & profile

Giulio Ciccone wins the first stage.

Story of the Giro d'Italia, volume 1

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Giro d'Italia, A Year-by-Year History of the Tour of Italy, Vol 1: 1909 - 1970 is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the start/finish city of San Lorenzo Dorsino at 2:00 PM, local time: 12C (54F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the south-southeast at 8 km/hr (5 mph). There is a 6% chance of rain.

The stage: The Tour of the Alps kicks off with its traditional challenging opener - a 148.5 km stage through Trentino packed with notable climbs. Rolling out from San Lorenzo Dorsino, riders tackle a gentle ascent towards Andalo before enjoying a smooth, sweeping descent.

Then, the route winds through Val di Non and Val di Sole, gradually gaining altitude before the day's main challenge: the Campo Carlo Magno climb. This steady ascent gains 900 meters in elevation before riders sweep through Madonna di Campiglio and down to Pinzolo via a series of wide hairpins.

A 27-kilometer stretch of favorable terrain follows along the valley floor until the race hits the Passo del Durone. These twisting switchbacks could see an initial selection, which is likely to continue in the final 9 km, a steady but irregular climb to the finish line in San Lorenzo Dorsino. With 2 km to go, the gradient steepens, with inclines between 7% and 8%.

The race: Oscar Chamberlain (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) & Moritz Kretschy (Israel-Premier tech) did not start.

Stage winner Giulio Ciccone's Team Lidl-Trek posted this report:

Giulio Ciccone claimed the 15th victory of the season for Lidl-Trek in an uphill sprint battle between climbers. The stage, starting and finishing in San Lorenzo Dorsino, was perfect on paper for the Italian – a first category mountain punctuated a hilly stage, which finished with a three-kilometer climb to the finish. It was also the most challenging stage of the race, although the parcours did not prove difficult enough to make a real selection.

Pre-race ceremonies, Team Lidl-Trek is presented.

After a committed team-effort by Lidl-Trek to control the race, Cicco launched an attack shortly before cresting the penultimate climb of Passo Durone, however it wasn’t enough to break away from the group of favorites. In the end, it came down some savvy positioning by Ciccone ahead of the sprint, and a powerful kick to the line which earned the Italian his first victory in close to two years. Cicco celebrated in trademark fashion, tossing his 100% sunglasses to the cheering crowd in a moment of passion. His victory comes after a successful Lidl-Trek altitude training camp, and is a clear indication that Ciccone is in excellent form ahead of the Giro d’Italia.

Early in the stage.

“I think we did a great job today, I really need to say thanks to all my teammates. We had a plan and I think we did it in the perfect way. Honestly it was a long time without victory for me and I really needed it today. I think it’s even more special being in Italy in this race that I really like. After a long time at altitude it’s always nice to restart the racing with a victory. It was honestly really hard. We went super-fast from the start, and the parcours was hard. I’m really happy.”
