Tour de France: 2021

Bill & Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, 2021: The Little Cannibal Dominates is available as an audiobook here. For the Kindle eBook version, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at Abu Dhabi at 4:30 PM, local time: 27C (80F), fair, with the wind from the north-northwest at 14 km/hr (9 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the stage 7 summary from winner Tadej Pogacar's UAE Team Emirates:

Tadej Pogačar used the 7th and final stage of the UAE Tour, 148 km starting from Al Ain and finishing uphill at Jebel Hafeet (10.9 km at 6.8% average gradient), to extend his impressive winning streak.

By beating Adam Yates (Ineos-Grenadiers) at the end of an intense duel, the Slovenian took his third consecutive victory at Jebel Hafeet and repeated the overall victory of the UAE Tour.

The win tally for Pogačar already in 2022 rises to three, while for UAE Team Emirates the victory count rises to 8.

Before the summit, UAE Team Emirates put in a huge team effort to put their leader in place.

Pogačar moved to the front only 3 km from the finish to follow an intense attack from Adam Yates. The duo were subsequently joined by Pello Bilbao (Bahrain-Victorious) and João Almedia, with the latter able to make a counterattack, before being neutralized shortly after.

Yates found the energy to go again, but the Slovenian of UAE Team Emirates resisted with determination, passing the British rider in a two-up sprint.

Almeida to a good 4th place (+15 “) and good placement also for Majka (7th at 16″), results that led the Portuguese to finish the UAE Tour in 5th place in the general classification (+55 ” from Pogačar) and the Polish in 6 ^ (+ 1’24 “).
UAE Team Emirates also finished top of the team rankings.

Pogačar: “I am delighted to have won the UAE Tour and to have conquered the finish line of Jebel Hafeet for the third time. It is a climb that suits my characteristics well, with steep slopes and a technical final stretch.

"In the final, with Almeida in the leading group, we set ourselves the goal of winning the stage, so João also tried to take advantage of his good condition to attack and get the win. However, Yates was on a great day and yolk him back: at that point, I concentrated on following him and winning the sprint .

:We found ourselves in a similar situation to last year, although I struggled to stay with Adam: his attacks are among the best in the world of cycling, so I’m happy I was able to follow him and get the jump on him in the sprint.

"Winning the UAE Tour is very important for our team, it’s fantastic to be able to celebrate with our sponsors: I thank everyone for the great contribution made this week.”

From the breakaway that stayed away, Mathais Vacek of Gazprom-RusVelo wins stage six.

Story of the Tour de France Volume 2

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, Vol 2: 1976 - 2018 is available as an audiobook here. For the print and Kindle eBook versions, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at Dubai at 5:00 PM, local time: 24C (75F), fair, with the wind from the north at 21 km/hr (13 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: 125 riders began stage six at 12:25 PM.

Stage winner Mathias Vacek's Gazprom-RusVelo team posted this:

Today Gazprom-RusVelo rider Mathias Vacek from the Czech Republic won the sixth stage at the UAE Tour. Mathias Vacek became the youngest winner of the UCI World Tour stage ever.

The whole day in the breakaway was worth it. Mathias Vacek, Dmitry Strakhov and Pavel Kochetkov worked hard from the beginning of the sixth stage and fought until the final. Mathias Vacek finished first, Dmitry Strakhov was third and Pavel Kochetkov closed the top-5.

Mathias Vacek on his victory: "Today I went into the breakaway to help my teammates. I also had a goal to try to attack from the breakaway in the final kilometres. On the kilometer 100 we had only a 1-minute advantage. It was hard to imagine that we will make it to the finish. It is unbelievable, I am very happy. We worked really hard and it is an amazing feeling to win! I think we have a great team right now with everyone being ready at their maximum. I would like to thank our team partners for their support!"

A well-pleased Mathias Vacek wins the UAE Tour's penultimate stage.

Here's the short report from GC 3rd-place Aleksandr Vlasov's Bora-hansgorhe team:

The fourth and last flat stage of the race traversed 180 km through the Dubai metropolitan area and concluded on Palm Jumeirah Island. A breakaway group went clear from the peloton early in the race and with a few kilometres remaining, they still had a one-minute lead. Patrick Konrad joined the chase at the head of the peloton, but the field was ultimately unable to reel in the leaders. The escapees fought out the victory among themselves, while all BORA-hansgrohe riders reached the finish in the group behind. Aleksandr Vlasov will head into tomorrow's final stage in third place overall.

"Today it didn't come down to the expected mass sprint. With the break making it to the end, we were unable to contest a top placing. Shortly before the finish there was a crash, but luckily we weren't involved. So we are pleased that our riders made it safely to the finish. On tomorrow's mountain stage, we will try with Aleksandr to maintain or even improve his podium standing." - Rolf Aldag, Sports Director

Weather at the start city of Ras Al Khaimah at 4:50 PM, local time: 23C (74F), fair, with the wind from the north-northwest at 16 km/hr (10 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: 125 riders began the stage at 12:17 PM.

Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner Jasper Philipsen said: “It was a really fast finish. We lined up really well with the team and had a good plan but then my lead out man’s chain dropped in the last kilometer so it was chaos trying to find a good wheel. It all came out well in the end though and I’m super happy. We’ll go for it tomorrow, anything after this is an extra bonus.”

The Red Jersey Tadej Pogacar said: “I had a puncture today but I didn’t panic, it happens sometimes. The team was perfect and I was not stressed at all. Alpecin-Fenix were attacking for the stage and the team was present at every attack. I saw the opportunity to take some seconds in the intermediate sprint and took it. You always need to be careful with echelons in cycling but here in the UAE you can move up if you’re strong because of the big roads.”

Here's the report from GC leader Tadej Pogacar's UAE Team Emirates:

Tadej Pogačar put in a strong but calm display on Stage 5 of the UAE Tour, defying bad luck while extending his lead in the general classification by a further 2 seconds.

Pogačar played his cards well on the flat but windy day from Ras al Khaimah Corniche to Al Marjan Island (182km), taking second behind the flying Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Fenix) in an intermediate sprint to extend his lead to 4’’ over second place in the GC, Filippo Ganna (Ineos-Grenadiers). Philipsen would go on to win the stage which had a dramatic finish in store for Pogacar and UAE.

Tadej Pogacar slightly extended his lead in stage 5.

The 23-year old once again had to call upon his teammates when at -6.4km from the finish he suffered an untimely puncture. Mikkel Bjerg was first to come back to help, with the rest of the UAE Team Emirates squad dropping back to safely deliver their leader back to the peloton before the finish.

Pogačar: “We didn’t panic when I punctured, I believe in the guys and they brought me back safe to the bunch. It was a perfect team job.

Alpecin were attacking during the whole stage and we managed to be present in every attack. We arrived to the bonus sprint with about 35 riders and I saw the opportunity to go for it. And to get a few bonus seconds but Jasper is just that bit faster! We had some echelons but here its wide roads so you can move up a bit easier. But you still have to be careful. ”

Tomorrow, stage 6, will be a big day for the race as the Expo 2020 Dubai takes centre stage with the start and finish of the flat 180km day held at the global event.

Weather at Ras al-Khaimah, near the second intermediate sprint, at 4:50 PM, local time: 24C (75F), fair, with the wind from the north at 16 km/hr (10 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: 125 riders started at 11:49 AM.

Here's the report from stage winner and new GC leader Tadej Pogačar's UAE Team Emirates:

On his fourth day of competition in 2022, Tadej Pogačar has already written the first chapter of the book of personal seasonal victories, and the 31st victory of his career.

The captain of UAE Team Emirates won the 4th stage of the UAE Tour, imposing himself on the uphill finish of Jebel Jais (climb of 18.8 km at 5.7% average gradient), a finish where last year he was second to Jonas Vingegaard.
This year, the success did not escape Pogačar, who successful completing the great work of the entire Emirati team in the best possible way.

After narrowing down of the group, the Slovenian, with a sprint in view of the finish line, outmanoeuvred Adam Yates (Ineos-Grenadiers) and Aleksandr Vlasov (Bora-hansgrohe) , climbing to first place in the general classification of the UAE Tour ( Ganna 2nd to 2”, Vlasov 3rd to 13”).

UAE Team Emirates, which also has João Almeida in 6th place in the overall ranking (+28 “), now takes their 6th win of the season.

Pogačar: “I always like to win, having succeeded makes this day beautiful for me and for the team. As a team we rode well, also trying to move with João and Rafal: the latter was the strongest climber of the group today.

"João and Rafal were also excellent in the final in launching me towards the sprint, the victory pays off all the work done in the past months, it’s great to start the season like this.

"Despite all the attacks that followed one another uphill, I saw that practically all the big names of the race remained in the leading group, so I checked that we reached the final with the compact group, since I knew it would not be possible to go solo I decided to wait for the sprint.

"Already in training, even after recovering from Covid-19, the sensations were very good, but in the race everything can be different; the period of the illness was not so heavy for me thankfully . I had the support of the team, they helped me and gave me peace of mind: also for this reason, today’s result is the result of an overall work of the whole team. Having a team like this gives you goosebumps."

For the 5th stage, the Ras al Khaimah Corniche-Al Marjan Island (182 km), the sprinters will be back in action.

Tour of Flanders, the Inside Story

Les Woodland's book Tour of Flanders: The Inside Story - The rocky roads of the Ronde van Vlaanderen is available as an audiobook here. For the print and Kindle eBook versions, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the start/finish city of Ajman at 5:30 PM, local time: 22C (72F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 21 km/hr (13 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Stefan Bissegger's EF Education-EasyPost team.

One year ago to the day, Stefan Bissegger sat on the hot seat at the UAE Tour and watched world champion Filippo Ganna narrowly take his first WorldTour victory away from him. Today, on stage 3 of the 2022 edition, the Swiss rider was out on a redemption tour.

Bissegger took an impressive win in a hotly contested time trial, averaging over 55 kilometers per hour over the 9-kilometer course which also saw him move into the overall lead.

“It’s nice in the end that you really win, that you made it, because you know in a time trial, it is always hard to say how good the others are,” said Bissegger at the finish. “Somebody could have the best day of his life, so you never know till the end. But I knew when I was at the finish line with my time, I knew I was going really good.”

Bissegger proved he could time trial with the best on his maiden year in the WorldTour. After his second place finish at the 2021 UAE Tour Time trial, he went on to win the time trial at Paris-Nice and the Benelux Tour, while posting some impressive performances at the Tour de France. He also proved he could do it on the road, when he took an especially meaningful win at his home race - the Tour de Suisse.

His preparation for the 2022 season however has been less than ideal. “I was looking forward to this time-trial for a long time. I had kind of a rough winter as well with my broken scaphoid,” said Bissegger. “It took a long time before this was fixed. But now I am really happy that I made it.

Bissegger will go into the first mountain test of the week wearing the leader’s jersey. The summit finish atop Jebel Jais is sure to be a stage for the climbers but you can be sure that he will give it his all tomorrow.

Weather at Abu Dhabi at 5:00 PM, local time: 23C (73F), fair, with the wind from the northwest at 34 km/hr (21 mph). No rain.

The race: 125 riders began the stage at 12:27 PM.

Here's the report from stage winner Mark Cavendish's Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl team.

Mark Cavendish netted Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl’s 10th victory of the year after an enthralling sprint in Abu Dhabi, where stage 2 of the season’s first World Tour race concluded. Just like one day ago, the finale was an intense one, with a headwind complicating matters, but this couldn’t stop the Manxman, who emerged from the scrum and produced a massive acceleration in the final 250 meters.

Except for some crosswinds that spiced up things with 120 kilometers to go, the stage was a quiet one until the closing kilometers, when the sprinters’ teams began making their presence felt. The Wolfpack left it late, making an appearance with only three kilometers remaining and piloting Mark Cavendish towards the front of the peloton, in anticipation of what looked to be another nervous mass gallop.

Michael Mørkøv used his vast experience to guide the 2021 Tour de France points jersey winner, who launched the sprint down the left-hand side of the road and produced a rapid acceleration that saw him hold off the other fast men for his 158th victory in the pro ranks.

“Being in Abu Dhabi always feels special and winning a stage here it’s even more so. I knew I was capable of getting more wins, and this victory, my first World Tour one of the season, gives me a lot of confidence not just for the remaining stages of the UAE Tour, but also for the next races.”

“I want to thank the team for their work today. We have a young squad here, with two neo-pros, but we all believe in each other, and all the guys did a great job in bringing me to the finish as fresh as possible. It was again very hectic, but we remained calm, and as I felt good allowed me to launch my sprint from 250 meters to go, despite the headwind. I had the energy to maintain my sprint all the way to the line and I’m happy with the way things went for us today”, said Mark Cavendish after his 20th victory in the Middle East.

Les Woodland's book Dirty Feet: How the Great Unwashed Created the Tour de France is available as an audiobook here. For the print and Kindle eBook versions, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the start/finish city of Madinat Zayed at 4:45 PM, local time: 32C (90F), sunny, with the wind from the south at 14 km/hr (9 mph). No rain.

The race: 125 riders started stage one at 12:19 PM. Therre was one non-starter, Denis Nekrasov (Gazprom-RusVelo).

Here's the stage one report from second-place Sam Bennett's Bora-hansgorhe team:

The seven-stage UAE Tour today opened this year's WorldTour calendar. The 185km flat course starting and finishing in Madinat Zayed was designed for the sprinters. The early breakaway group was unable to prevail and was reeled back in with 20km of racing remaining. The squad from Raubling, which at this point had been riding tucked away in the peloton to save energy, brought Sam Bennett to the front over the final kilometre. On the home stretch, however, the Irishman was pipped at the last moment by Jasper Philipsen, taking second place in his season debut for BORA- hansgrohe.

Jasper Philipsen taking the first stage.

“Because my form isn't quite at 100% yet, we didn't have such high expectations today. Our goal was to work on our leadout and learn how to best ride together. We took a bit of a risk, and started the leadout late, but it worked out very well in the end. The guys did a great job in a stressful situation, and this performance is of course very confidence-boosting for us. I think our performances will only get better from here. We can be really pleased with how things went today. Thanks again to the team for their amazing work and for putting their trust in me." - Sam Bennett

"There were extreme wind conditions today, which meant we had headwind on the way out and tailwind on the way back, without much crosswind. In principle, the idea was to go for a sprint with Sam and come into the finale a little later, so to wait and come from behind with momentum. Of course, that entails a certain element of risk, but it ultimately worked out quite well. We're really pleased with the result and can certainly build this performance of ours today. Tomorrow is another sprint stage and we'll be trying again for a result there."  Rolf Aldag, Sports Director
