Plato's Crito

The race: 130 riders began the final stage at 12:37.

Here's the report from stage winner Caleb Ewan's Lotto Soudal team:

Lotto Soudal rider Caleb Ewan has won the closing stage of the UAE Tour. The 26-year-old Australian powered to his first victory of the season during a much anticipated bunch sprint in Abu Dhabi.

“We came to the UAE Tour to win a stage and today, there was only one more opportunity left. It feels great to eventually achieve that goal during this last day of racing. My last few sprints were quite average, so I felt a fair amount of pressure to perform well today”, begins Caleb Ewan.

Also in the final UAE Tour stage, the danger for possible echelons forming was always nearby. At around sixty kilometres from the line, Caleb Ewan, Tosh Van der Sande and Jasper De Buyst represented Lotto Soudal in quite a large front group, but the peloton was eventually eager to bring them back and headed for a final bunch sprint. In the run-up to the bunch kick, Ewan was brought into position by his Lotto Soudal teammates. In the end, Caleb Ewan launched his powerful sprint and took his first win of the season as he beat Sam Bennett and Phil Bauhaus, who came in second and third, respectively.

“The team went above and beyond to deliver me in a good position. I entered the final pretty fresh, which was in my opinion crucial to do a good sprint in the end. I wasn’t specifically looking for Bennett’s wheel, instead we tried to focus on ourselves and delivered the best lead-out possible. Roger Kluge maybe went a little too late as we started to get swamped. I had to jump from his wheel quite early as I saw Sam Bennett coming on the right with a fair bit of speed. Luckily, there was some room for me to go there as it was basically the only way out. Once I got past his wheel, I could launch my sprint and finish the job.”

Ewan’s first victory of the season will certainly give him confidence to start the cycling season in Europe.

“I haven’t been this far in the season without a win in my whole career, so it definitely is a bit of a relief to start the cycling season in Europe with a win under the belt. I hope this is the beginning of a great year as I have big plans for the season. So, it means a lot to start off with a win”, concludes Caleb Ewan.

Olympics 50 Craziest Stories

The race: The GC times below reflect the 10-second penalty given to Tadej Pogacar and his teammate Jan Polanc after Polanc gave Pogacar a push in the final meters.

Here's the report from stage winner Sam Bennett's Deceuninck-Quick Step team.

Sam Bennett unleashed another spectacular burst of speed and added another victory to his palmares, this time in Palm Jumeirah – the manmade Dubai archipelago – where stage 6 of the UAE Tour concluded after 165 quiet kilometers. Bennett, who on Wednesday claimed the first World Tour bunch sprint of the season, relied again on the well-drilled lead-out train of Shane Archbold and Michael Mørkøv, who stomped their authority over the final kilometer and delivered him in a perfect position with 200 meters to go.

Once he came out of the Dane’s wheel, last year’s Tour de France green jersey winner never looked back and powered like a locomotive, comfortably winning by two bike lengths, a success that confirmed he is the most in-form sprinter in this start of the season. It was Sam’s ninth victory since joining Deceuninck – Quick-Step, one for which he praised his teammates.

“It feels amazing, but I wouldn’t have done it without my teammates today, who were again tremendous, just like on the first stage I won here. At the end of the day, it’s down to them and my very fast bike. The more sprints we do together, the better we’re getting. It’s just about repeating the same thing and making decisions in the final. We’re really getting to know each other and we’re pretty much nailing it at the minute.”

“I pushed hard this off-season because I wanted to have a strong start to the year and I’m happy to see it pays dividends. We’re having a great time here in the UAE Tour and it feels great to repay the team’s confidence and work. At the same time, it bodes well for Paris-Nice, which will be my next appointment of the season”, a beaming Sam said after the stage and his 28th win at World Tour level.

Story of the Giro d'Italia volume 2

The race: Here's the report from GC third place Joao Almeida's Deceuninck-Quick Step team.

João Almeida successfully defended his place on the podium of the season’s first World Tour race, and he did it by going on the attack with two kilometers remaining of stage 5 to the top of Jabel Jais (21.4km, 5.4%), the country’s highest mountain.

Despite the race being animated by an eight-man breakaway – the largest group to feature at the front this week – the peloton was at all times in complete control, even allowing the escapees to open up a four-minute lead before turning on the gas and bringing them back one by one. With two kilometers to go, João accelerated from the red jersey group, his powerful attack making an important selection and helping the chasers overhaul the last of the escapees.

Tracked down by the other GC guys, the 22-year-old Deceuninck – Quick-Step rider remained at the front as the group was breaking up and arrived home just a few seconds down on Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), who launched a late attack that helped him prevail. Fifth on the stage, Almeida cemented his place in the top 3 overall and is now just two days away from getting his best ever result in a World Tour stage race.

“The climb was quite steady and I felt good from the beginning, so I rode it at a nice pace. In the final, I tried to attack as I had nothing to lose, but the gradient wasn’t steep enough to open a gap. At the end of the day, I am happy that I kept my third place and will continue with the same focus over the next stages”, said João.

Tour de France: 2020

The race: 137 riders began today's stage at 11:48. Jos Van Emden (Jumbo-Visma) did not start.

Here's the report from stage winner Sam Bennett's Deceuninck-Quick Step team:

Sam Bennett was in a league of his own Wednesday afternoon, capturing his first victory of the year after showing a clean pair of wheels to his opponents at the end of the longest stage of the UAE Tour, which started and concluded on the Al Marjan Island, lasting 204 kilometres and almost five hours in the saddle.

For the 30-year-old Irishman it was the first bunch sprint of the season, and the Tour de France green jersey winner benefitted from a perfectly executed lead-out train to navigate what turned out to be a chaotic finale. Piloted by Michael Mørkøv, who used his vast experience to bring him in position with 200 meters to go, Sam took the left side of the road and burst clear of the field, rolling across the line with a comfortable gap on the riders rounding out the podium.

“I was a little frustrated missing the sprint on the first stage and I knew there were only three more opportunities, so I was really motivated today. At the same time, I was pretty nervous, because it was the first bunch sprint of the season for myself and you never know what’s your condition coming out of the winter”, Sam explained shortly after his first win in two years at the UAE Tour.

The victory he got on stage 4 marked a significant milestone for Bennett, who now has 50 wins in the pro ranks, a number which puts him behind only Sean Kelly on a list of the most successful Irish riders in history.

“Having the team do such a great job you just want to bring the victory. I knew all I had to do was follow the guys, who made my job easier, and with my legs good in the end I was able to do the sprint I wanted. It was a messy finale, but I made it thanks to this amazing Wolfpack, who controlled the stage and then delivered me in the perfect position! I am proud to score my 50th victory here! It was a long, hot stage, but it now feels great to get the first bunch sprint of the year out of the way. It’s a perfect way to start the season”, Sam added.

Deceuninck – Quick-Step teammate João Almeida enjoyed a quieter day and remained on the UAE Tour overall podium ahead of Jebel Jais, the race’s last mountain test.

Tuesday, February 23: Stage 3, Al Ain - Jebel Hafeet, 166 km

Tadej Pogacar

Tadej Pogacar wins the stage wearing the GC leader's red jersey.

Weather at Abu Dhabi at 4:45 PM, local time: 24C (76F), fair, with the wind from the north at 21 km/hr (13 mph). No rain.

Tour de France: 2019

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Tadej Pogacar's UAE Team Emirates.

Tadej Pogačar continued his winning ways on the ascent of Jebel Hafeet claiming victory on the third stage, while wearing the race leader’s jersey.
The talented Slovenian battled Adam Yates (Ineos-Grenadiers) who now trails in the GC by 43’’.

A strong team performance by UAE Team Emirates saw them arrive at the final ascent (10.5 km climb, finishing at 1025 meters above sea level) leading the peloton and reducing it heavily by setting a fierce tempo.
Pogačar was able to respond promptly to the attacks of Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma) and Adam Yates, pouncing in the final metres to outsprint the Briton.

This marks UAE Team Emirates’ third success on this climb: Pogačar’s double was preceded by Rui Costa’s win in 2017.

Pogačar: “We wanted to win and we did, at the end of a really hard day. The team showed an excellent performance, always riding in the right positions and setting the pace in the first part of the climb.

"I was able to respond to the various attacks, even those of Yates. Adam was very strong, which made it tougher and for this reason I am even happier. It was also important to have widened the gap with the other guys in the GC.

"I knew the ending well and how to approach it in the best way. I knew I had to start early and enter the last two corners first."

The title of the UAE Tour general classification is far from over, given that we will still have to face an uphill finish and given that the wind can still create dangers in the last four stages”.

The 4th stage will be 204 km of flat roads with start and finish on Marjan Island.

Weather at Abu Dhabi at 4:00 PM, local time: 26C (78F), fair, with the wind from the north-northwest at 24 km/hr (15 mph). No rain.

TDF volume 1

The race: Alpecin-Fenix, the team of stage one winner Mathieu van der Poel, in agreement with the UAE Tour organiser, have decided to withdraw its team from the race, in order to safeguard the race bubble and ensure the safe continuation of the race.

The team was notified of one positive result of a member of its staff from the round of tests conducted on Sunday evening, 21st of February.

Upon receiving the results, the person immediately went into isolation, and all those who came into contact with this person are self-isolating, in compliance with the protocol measures put in place by the race organisers and UAE Health Authorities. All team members will undertake further tests in the coming days, while they remain in isolation.

Here's the report from new GC leader Tadej Pogacar's UAE-Team Emirates:

UAE Team Emirates made a strong step forward after yesterdays exploits to claim the red leaders jersey after stage 2 at the UAE Tour. On the second stage, a 13 km individual time trial on the Al Hudayriyat Island circuit, Mikkel Bjerg set the third best time of the day, with Tadej Pogačar fourth and new race leader.

Bjerg, the young Danish time trial specialist, finished behind stage winner Filippo Ganna (Ineos Granadier) and Bissegger (EF Education – Nippo) on a difficult test marked by strong winds.

Pogačar set-out relaxed and poised after the sixth place in the inaugural stage, and will now pull-on the leader’s jersey of the UAE Tour.

The third stage tomorrow will see the riders face the first real uphill challenge of this Tour: 166km culminating on the arduous summit of Mount Jabel Hafeet.

Pogačar: “I did not start with any particular result in my mind, I just wanted to go as fast and as good as I could and I think I managed to do that. I’m in a good position now with five stages to go, but anything can happen, and tomorrow we already have the hardest finish for this Tour at Jabel Hafeet. I hope to recover well and have good legs and we will see what happens”.

Cycling's 50 Craziest Stories

The race: 139 riders began stage one at 12:33.

Here's the report from second-place David Dekker's Jumbo-Visma team:

David Dekker has finished second in the opening stage of the UAE Tour on his professional debut. In the sprint, the Team Jumbo-Visma rider only had to acknowledge the superiority of his compatriot Mathieu van der Poel.

The first stage was one full of nervousness. From the start, the wind played a major role and the peloton was immediately split apart. After a game of cat and mouse, a little after halfway the stage, twenty-six riders established the decisive leading group and sprinted for the stage victory. Besides Dekker, Chris Harper was also part of the breakaway for Team Jumbo-Visma. The Australian finished eighth.

“The goal was to go for the stage win, but the best was gone after a day of full-on racing”, Dekker said. “The difference on the line with Mathieu was clear, so I can’t be dissatisfied with this second place. In the final it was mainly a matter of getting in and keeping position. Chris and I were a bit too far back in the last two kilometres, but Chris did a good job there with a final effort to get me in Mathieu’s wheel. It was a very tough and fast stage and it immediately broke into echelons. The cooperation in the front group was very good. I think it was mainly because it was a mix of sprinters and GC riders and also because there were teams that were represented with more than two riders. In the last kilometres Deceuninck-QuickStep tried to avoid the sprint, but Chris reacted adequately to counter the attempts a number of times so that I could focus on my sprint.”

Sports director Addy Engels looked back on an eventful stage with a good feeling. “It was a very nervous stage which was decided early. David’s second place is a wonderful entry as a professional, especially as he did it at WorldTour level. A class act. With Chris we also had a rider for the GC in that group. So the situation was okay for us. Of course you always hope that you are in the first group with more riders, but looking at the composition of the group and how many teams missed out, we should be happy with this result.”
