Weather at the start/finish city of Villars-sur-Ollon at 2:30 PM, local time: 27C (81F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 13 km/hr (8 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The stage: The final stage is the queen stage of the tour – with over 4,000 metres of elevation gain.

The climb to the Col de la Croix begins even before kilometre 0. This is followed by a long descent towards Aigle, before the road heads straight uphill again. The stage essentially has only two modes: climbing or descending – recovery sections are rare.

The race: Alec Segaert (Bahrain Victorious), Julian Alaphilippe (Tudor Pro Cycling Team), Sjoerd Bax (Pinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team), Lucas Hamilton (Netcompany INEOS), & Matthew Brennan (Visma | Lease a Bike) did not start.

Early on Alexander Kamp (Uno-X Mobility), Menno Huising (Visma | Lease a Bike), & Dion Smith (NSN Cycling Team) abandoned. On the second ascent of the Col de la Croix Oscar Riesebeek (Alpecin-Premier Tech) & Clément Russo (Groupama-FDJ United) quit the race.

Here is the report from stage and GC winner Tadej Pogacar's UAE Team Emirates-XRG:

On the punishing slopes of Villars-sur-Ollon, Tadej Pogačar rode to his third stage win of the week in Switzerland, with the Slovenian sealing the overall Tour de Suisse title.

For the UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider, the race is another addition to his palmarès, which now counts six of cycling’s ‘big seven’ stage races. Only Itzulia Basque Country is left to claim for Pogačar, who has recently won the Tour de Romandie and the Tour de Suisse as his build-up to the Tour de France continues.

The Tour de Suisse has been a memorable one for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, with the Emirati squad taking four of the race’s five stages, through Pogačar and his teammate Jhonatan Narváez. In addition to Pogačar’s victory in the general classification, the 27-year-old’s teammate Brandon McNulty also finished the week in sixth overall.

At the start line.

Stage 5 offered Pogačar a final opportunity to make clear his authority in the leader’s jersey, and the world champion did not pass up the chance. Despite a strong breakaway heading up the road, Pogačar refused to relinquish his ambitions on a third stage win.

As the likes of Nairo Quintana (Movistar), Lenny Martinez (Bahrain Victorious) and Paul Double (Jayco AlUla) butted heads in the breakaway, Pogačar’s UAE Team Emirates-XRG squad went to work at the front of the peloton. Little by little, the gap to the front was reduced, and with the help of Decathlon CMA CGM, the breakaway was within touching distance at the bottom of the final climb.

The peloton on its way in the final stage with a total of three Col de la Croix climbs.

There was still work for Pogačar to do, however, who went on the attack with 8.2km to go. His gap from the front of the race was around a minute, and the Slovenian rode past dropped riders as the kilometres to go ticked down. As the sun shone in Switzerland, so too did Pogačar in the yellow leader’s jersey.

In the end, only Lenny Martinez stood between the world champion and a third stage win of the week, and the Frenchman could only resist Pogačar’s might for so long. With a little over a kilometre to ride, Pogačar snapped at the heels of Martinez, and immediately launched an attack over the top of the Bahrain Victorious rider.

The move was enough to see Pogačar go alone, with the 27-year-old crossing the line some seven seconds ahead of Martinez at the summit. The victory secured Pogačar’s win overall, taken with an advantage of over six and a half minutes to his nearest competitor. Now with 121 wins in his palmarès, the UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider can look ahead to the Tour de France full of confidence.

Pogačar: “It was a super hard day. The parcours was really tough and with the team, we did a super job. It was getting harder and harder every lap that we did, and in the end, it was an all-out effort. Decathlon was also trying to do a big pace in the last climb, so I just tried to continue and keep with this pace to the top. It was a brutal day today, and also super hot, so I am happy to take the win, also the GC, and now I can go back home to Urška.

“It was good on the final climb. With this heat, this is likely how it will look at the Tour de France, and so much elevation before. So it was really good to test the legs, the heart, and the lungs on the final climb. I went all out, and it was really hard, but actually a nice climb.

“Now it is time to reset a little bit at home, do a bit of specific training, and we are off to Barcelona very soon for the Tour de France.”

Weather at the race city of Aarburg at 2:50 PM, local time: 32C (90F), sunny, with the wind from the west-southwest at 6 km/hr (4 mph). No rain is forecast.

The stage: The approximately 23-kilometre time trial is a classic specialist discipline: few elevation changes, fast sections and several corners where technically strong riders can gain valuable time.

The course is not overly technical, but still offers enough opportunities to create differences. For time trial specialists, this is a key stage to gain time in the overall classification – or at least avoid losing ground. - David Loosli

The race: Not Starting: Patrick Konrad (lidl-Trek), Alberto Dainese (Soudal Quick-Step), & Orluis Aular (Movistar).

First rider off was Marco Brenner (Tudor Pro Cycling Team) at 2:57 PM. Tadej Pogacar started at 5:02.

Here's the race organizer's stage four report:

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates XRG) narrowly edged out Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Premier Tech) in the 23.8-kilometer individual time trial around Aarburg, winning Stage 4. Only 0.04 seconds separated the two at the finish line. Tobias Foss (Netcompany INEOS) finished third, six seconds off the pace.

Several riders set strong benchmark times early on the fast course. Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates XRG) took a commanding lead at one point before Van der Poel lowered the fastest time to 26:37 minutes. For a long time, the Dutchman appeared to be on track for the stage win.

Mathias Vacek (Lidl-Trek) also put in a strong performance, leading Van der Poel at the intermediate time check. However, the Czech rider lost time in the second half of the course and missed out on taking the lead at the finish. As the overall leader, Pogačar was the final rider to start and was only slightly ahead of Vacek at the intermediate check. In the final meters, the overall leader dug deep and edged ahead of Van der Poel by the narrowest of margins.

With his second stage win of this Tour de Suisse, Pogačar further extended his lead in the general classification. Heading into the final "queen stage," he now holds a 4-minute, 22-second advantage over Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost). The Slovenian thus enters the final day of racing with a comfortable lead.

Schmid breaks into the top 10
Mauro Schmid (Team Jayco AlUla) delivered a strong time trial performance, finishing eighth and securing the best result among the Swiss riders. The Zurich native finished just half a minute behind Pogačar, marking the best result for a Swiss rider in the tour so far. Marc Hirschi (Tudor Pro Cycling Team) finished 42nd, Fabian Weiss (Tudor Pro Cycling Team) 48th, and Silvan Dillier (Alpecin-Premier Tech) placed 60th.

On Sunday, the race concludes with the queen stage, starting and finishing in Villars-sur-Ollon. Covering approximately 152 kilometers, the route features over 4,000 meters of elevation gain and several tough climbs. After the time trial, Pogačar himself described it as a "brutal stage" that will decide the outcome of this year's Tour de Suisse.

Weather at the start/finish city of Bad Ragaz at 2:30 PM local time: 31C (87F), showers in the vicinity, with the wind from the west-northwest at 13 km/hr (8 mph). There is a 57% chance of rain.

The stage: This year, Stage 3 begins without any easing in: right from start, the St. Luzisteig provides a short but demanding opening climb.

The route then leads through the Principality of Liechtenstein before returning to Switzerland. A longer flat section follows, before the race rises again towards the Appenzellerland.

The decisive obstacle of the day is the Schwägalp. It is here that it will become clear whether the sprinters can hold on – and if not, how much time they will lose.

After the descent towards Altstätten, the route is completely flat all the way to the finish in Bad Ragaz. That means the key point of the stage comes well before the finish. Riders who are dropped therefore have a realistic chance of coming back, provided their teams organise the chase effectively.

That is exactly what makes this stage so intriguing: will the race be decided early, or will it still come down to a sprint? For the sprinters, this is certainly one of the few genuine opportunities for a stage win. – David Loosli

The race: Early in the stage Casper Van Uden (Team Picnic-PostNL) abandoned.

Here's the report from stage winner Jhonatan Narvaez's UAE Team Emirates-XRG:

With a fantastic show of force and determination, Jhonatan Narváez won stage 3 of the Tour de Suisse for UAE Team Emirates-XRG. The Ecuadorian won a two-up sprint from the day’s breakaway to take the honours, with the peloton coming tantalisingly close to making the catch for good.

Pipping his breakaway companion Xandro Meurisse (Pinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling) to the stage victory, Narváez added another brilliant win to his palmarès, just weeks after taking three stages at the Giro d’Italia. Clearly still in sparkling form, the UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider spent 112km off the front of the race on Friday afternoon, before taking the Emirati squad’s 41st win of the campaign.

As the finish in Bad Ragaz approached, it looked as though the two-man breakaway would be caught, but still, the two riders continued to work in unison to extend their hopes. With the road rearing up inside the final kilometre, Narváez spotted his opportunity to launch a sprint and dash the dreams of Meurisse.

Inside the final 300m, Narváez packed a punch and delivered a knockout blow to Meurisse, with the Belgian still able to keep hold of second place across the line. The peloton, meanwhile, was less than a time split behind the pair, but would be forced to settle for third place on the day. That honour was taken by Magnus Cort of Uno-X Mobility Team.

Narváez’s teammate, Tadej Pogačar, meanwhile, finished inside the peloton to take his commanding lead of the general classification into the weekend. The Slovenian holds an advantage of a little under three minutes over Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost), with just two stages remaining.

Narváez: “It was a hard day. Especially in the last part, it was a headwind, and we rode full, Xandro Meurisse and me. So I am happy. We rode really good in the final.

“We did a mistake yesterday, and today, two riders from the team were free to chase a stage win, so I tried to go into the breakaway. Then we just rode full gas with Xandro. I am happy to have had the chance today.”

Dirty Feet: Early days of the Tour de France

Les Woodland's book Dirty Feet: How the Great Unwashed Created the Tour de France is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the start/finish city of Locarno at 2:40 PM, local time: 31C (87F), fair, with the wind from the southwest at 10 km/hr (6 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The stage: The second stage begins along the lake towards Tenero. From there, the route climbs over Monte Ceneri towards Lugano before looping back. This time, however, the course remains at mid-altitude before heading back towards Locarno.

Overall, this is not one of the toughest stages in terms of elevation gain. Monte Ceneri is not a major obstacle, but depending on the race dynamics, it can still take its toll on the peloton.

The decisive moves are likely to come in the final. Shortly before Tenero, a climb of around three kilometres begins, followed by a short descent and another climb of just under one and a half kilometres, which is steep in parts. From there, the route descends towards Locarno and continues via Ascona. A bunch sprint is unlikely, with riders who excel on short, steep climbs expected to have the advantage. - David Loosli

The race: Here's the report from third-place Bart Lemmen's Team Visma | Lease a Bike:

Bart Lemmen has shown his strength in stage two of the Tour de Suisse. The 30-year-old Dutch rider was part of the early breakaway and launched his effort in the demanding finale. Lemmen ultimately finished third, with Romain Grégoire taking the stage victory.

Stage two of the Swiss stage race featured a lively opening phase. On the first climb of the day, riders battled fiercely for a place in the break of the day. Lemmen was attentive and eventually joined a group of fourteen riders that managed to escape from the peloton.

Stage two gets started.

The breakaway built up a solid advantage heading into the finale. On the climbs, Lemmen showed he was in excellent form, staying with the strongest riders in the front group. He entered the final kilometre with a small select group but just missed out on the victory, eventually taking third place.

“I felt really good today,” the 30-year-old said afterwards. “I rode a strong race, but it’s a shame I couldn’t finish it off. To be competing for the win in this field is very special, but in the final three kilometres I started getting cramps, so I knew it would be difficult to win today.”

His performance gives Lemmen confidence for the coming days. “The feeling is really good and today’s performance only confirms that. Tomorrow we hopefully get a chance to go for the win with Matthew, and on Sunday there is an important day coming up for Wilco. I hope to contribute in both stages.”

Melanoma: It Started with a Freckle

David L. Stanley's masterful telling of his bout with skin cancer Melanoma: It Started with a Freckle is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the start/finish city of Sondrio at 2:35 PM, local time: 31C (87F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the west-southwest at 10 km/hr (6 mph). There is just a 2% chance of rain.

The stage: The Tour de Suisse begins with a demanding opening stage around Sondrio. After an initial flat section, the route quickly turns into a constant up and down. The character of the stage is less comparable to flat classics such as the Flanders-Classics, and instead resembles more demanding races like the Il Lombardia. The race heads into the Valtellina and mainly runs at mid-altitude, which will shape the rhythm of the peloton.

In the finale, two short but very steep climbs are likely to create a first clear selection. A bunch sprint is highly unlikely under these conditions. Instead, the stage win is expected to be decided by small groups or even a solo rider.

The race: Alessandro Pinarello (NSN Cycling Team) did not start.

Here's the report from stage winner Tadej Pogacar's UAE Team Emirates-XRG:

On stage 1 of the Tour de Suisse, Tadej Pogačar produced a remarkable display to take the stage and ride his way into the leader’s jersey. The world champion went alone with 69.3km to go, and would not be caught again before the finish.

As the day lulled behind the breakaway, Pogačar saw his opportunity to attack, and made it count. The UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider clipped off the front of the peloton, and was not to be followed.

Kilometre by kilometre, Pogačar bridged his way across to the breakaway, and after 4km, he was at the front of the race. Then, as the road rose again, the Slovenian attacked off the front and went solo with 69.3km to go. Over an hour later, Pogačar had only extended his lead over those behind, taking a commanding lead in the general classification.

He's gone. Tadej Pogacar is alone and off the front, 2min 20sec ahead of his nearest chaser Richard Carapaz with 16 km to go.

By the finish in Sondrio, the UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider had an advantage of over two minutes to his nearest competitor, Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost), with the third-nearest rider almost two and a half minutes down.

Heading into stage 2, Pogačar holds a gap of two minutes and 22 seconds over Carapaz, with Andrea Bagioli (Lidl-Trek) at 2:39, and anybody else at over four minutes. His lead is commanding, but his ambition will not be tempered. After the finish on Wednesday afternoon, the 27-year-old was happy to reflect on a successful afternoon.

Pogačar: “It was hard, it was really hard. the parcours this time was easy, eevrything was under control and then from the first climb of the day, it was already super hard just to go up. Nils did an amazing pace there, and after the bonus seconds, me and Brandon really took the challenge and tried something.

“I didn’t have radio there, so I didn’t know what was happening there, so I just kept on riding. Once I knew the gap was big, I could settle into the rhythm and try to hold it to the finish, which was really long and super hard, but also quite technical, so it was quite nice to be alone.

“Somehow it worked, thanks to the teammates I think, blocking in the back, and setting the pace beforehand. Without this, it wouldn’t be possible. We have a strong team, so we can try to go for the stages in the days to come.”
