Story of the Giro d'Italia volume 2

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Giro d'Italia, A Year-by-Year History of the Tour of Italy, Vol 2: 1971 - 2011 is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the start/finish city of Vernier at 2:00 PM, local time: 11C (52F), rain, with the wind from the west at 8 km/hr (5 mph).

The race: Here's the report from GC winner Carlos Rodriguez's Team INEOS Grenadiers.

Carlos Rodriguez claimed the overall victory in Tour De Romandie after a nervy, rain soaked final stage in Switzerland.

Initially, stage five of the race was a slow affair, with a small move up the road being controlled by the Grenadiers. However, on entering the final lap, the pace was increased via a series of attacks on both the categorised and uncategorised climbs that littered the course on the outskirts of Vernier.

The riders wait in the rain for the start signal.

Egan Bernal was quick to mark out the most serious of these, with Magnus Sheffield marshalling the peloton behind. The team did a great job of keeping Carlos up to the front of the bunch, and out of trouble.

Into the final few kilometres and the race was all back together, and a bunch sprint would supply us with the winner of the day. Once again, the Grenadiers did a great job keeping Carlos towards the front of the bunch, and he would cross the line flanked by Magnus and Egan, to claim the first WorldTour stage race of his career.

Despite the fact Egan Bernal worked selflessly across the week, he also finished 10th overall after another consistent, strong display in Switzerland.

Riders before the stage start. Looks like a nice day for a bike race.

Here's the report from stage winner Carlos Rodriguez's Team EF Educaton-EasyPost:

With two kilometers to go in the fourth stage of the Tour de Romandie, Richard Carapaz launched his attack.

The reigning Olympic champion danced away from an elite group of GC favorites and rode solo to the mountain village of Leysin, where he celebrated his second victory of the 2024 season. After a difficult spring, this win in the prestigious Swiss race proves that Richie’s persistence and self belief have paid off.

“I knew that the stage was key today, and that I had a lot of options,” Richie said after he had sprayed champagne from the top step of the podium. “In the end, I took the opportunity: go for it until the finish line. I knew the roads and waited for the moment I wanted to go.”

And then he soared like an Ecuadorian eagle. A hundred meters from the finish line, Richie knew he had it. He never let off the pedals, but allowed his determined grimace to turn into a grin.

“I knew I was faster and that I had it in the bag, so I could enjoy it!” he said.

Our whole team is going to celebrate tonight. EF Education-EasyPost Head Sports Director Charly Wegelius watched Richard’s attack from the race car.

“Richie's been knocking on the door for a while now,” Charly said. “He's obviously had a hard, tricky start to the season with some setbacks, but he put a good period of training in and he's been there or thereabouts. We knew that he was good, but he just had to keep going at it. I think he did a great job, not giving up. He had to show some patience today. He waited until just the right moment, and then he let fly.”

Richie’s teammates are excited to see him back to his best. They did a huge job today to get him to the final climb fresh.

“To be around a rider of his level is motivating for the whole group,” Charly said. “Everybody put a lot of work into the stage, supporting him, and to see him finish it off is just great energy for the whole group.”

We’ll keep this momentum rolling. Grand tour season is about to kick off. Richie has his sights set on the Tour de France.

“I am very happy after this first campaign in Europe and I think the team has shown what they are made of,” Richard said. “Now we are going to enjoy this.”

Today’s win shows that Richie is in a great spot to start his final preparations for La Grand Boucle.

Weather at the nearby city of Fribourg at 1:45 PM, local time: 12C (54F), cloudy, with the wind from the west at 13 km/hr (8 mph). There is a 12% chance of rain, rising to 34% at 5:00 PM.

The race: Stan Van Tricht (Alpecin-Deceuninck) was the first rider off, at 2:24 PM. Alan Riou (Arkea-B&B Hotels) did not start.

Benjamin Thomas finishes his ride.

Here's the report from stage winner Brandon McNulty's UAE Team Emirates:

UAE Team Emirates celebrated a successful day at the races with US TT Champion Brandon McNulty putting his stamp on the stage 3 time trial, winning the 15.5km race against the clock in 20:06 at the Tour de Romandie.

His teammate Juan Ayuso finished 4th, 20” behind and goes into the yellow jersey with 2 stages remaining. Felix Grossschartner also put in a great ride to take 3rd place at 14”.

McNulty: “It was nice. I didn’t know what to expect after the last few days. I had a good ride, and maybe I was a bit lucky with the weather. It’s nice to have a win, I was lucky to be in the dry, and it’s a bit strange because you don’t know if you were actually the fastest, but always happy with a win.Now we obviously need to defend because tomorrow will be a tough day, we look forward to defending the jersey now.”

Ayuso now leads the overall classification by seven seconds ahead of Ilan Van Wilder (Soudal-QuickStep) and 10 seconds ahead of Aleksandr Vlasov (Bora-Hansgrohe).

Ayuso: “It was a very hard TT and I think everybody suffered on it. All my teammates said they found it really tough when they got back to the bus so mentally I was prepared for that. Personally I didn’t have great sensations but I think I managed to control my effort and push in the right places. In the wet it was quite tricky and I had to take a few risks. I think I’m in a good position on GC and hope we can hold on for a few more days and take home the GC. Quite a few guys are within a minute so we still have a lot of work to do to be able to win this race.”

Weather at the finish city of Salvan at 1:30 PM, local time: 7C (46F), sunny, with the wind from the northwest at 8 km/hr (5 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The race: Santiago Umba (Astana Qazaqstan) did not start.

Here's the stage 2 report from winner Thibau Nys' Team Lidl-Trek:

Thibau Nys secured his first WorldTour victory on Stage 2 at the Tour de Romandie on a day that saw two puncheurs go head-to-head on a mountain top finish.

Nys’ disappointment after being boxed in at the finish of Stage 1 turned into elation in Les Marécottes after an impressive display of strength from young Belgian on only his third race day of his 2024 road season.

Lidl-Trek had a plan going into the 171km-long stage and that was to have Nys in a strong breakaway and Nys was so strong himself today that is was the 21-year-old that forced the move, that eventually grew to be seven-riders strong, to go clear.

This was also a first, the first breakaway of Nys’ career so far and makes for a nice statistic, a 100 percent success rate of victories from an early move.

The group worked well together, they had a solid advantage going over the top of the Col des Mosses and as they reached the base of the final eight-kilometer climb, five riders remained in front with an advantage over two minutes.

From there it was game on and the reduced bunch, with Tao Geoghegan Hart, Giulio Ciccone, Patrick Konrad and Sam Oomen sitting relaxed, started to apply the pressure.

With the gap down to around 30 seconds, Luke Plapp (Team Jayco AlUla) launched an attack that saw him bridge across to the leaders and draw Nys and Andrea Vendrame (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team) with him.

After a final hairpin bend with 200 meters to go, Nys, who had looked calm and composed in the final kilometers, knowing he was the fastest of the race, launched his sprint.

Nys’ stage win also secured him his third career-first of the day: a leader’s jersey at a WorldTour stage race.

Thibau’s Reaction:
“I was so disappointed yesterday that I couldn’t show my good legs. We made a plan to go in the break if it was a strong one. I think I set up the break in the perfect moment. It was a group of pretty strong guys, I just tried to save as much energy as possible but I didn’t really know what to expect to be honest because it was the first time I’m in the breakaway in my career.

“Also I didn’t really know the last climb or the corners, so I must say a massive thanks to the team, they did a hell of a job to guide me in the last kilometers. I was surprised when Michi [Schär, Sports Director] told me there was a hairpin 200m to go, I almost missed it but it was just in time for me to make my sprint.

“It gets difficult if you think about it [that it’s your race to lose], that’s the moment when it can slip out of your hands. I tired to stay cool and not risk anything, then do everything at the right moment.

“I cannot describe this. For some people it might just look like a normal victory, but I wanted it so bad and I worked so hard for it. It was the first big goal of the season to be in good shape here. That’s one thing, and then to win it’s something else. I will remember this for the rest of my life.

“My TT is not good enough at the moment to keep the jersey, but I will enjoy my day in Yellow tomorrow and I will definitely sleep better than yesterday after today. I started my season three days ago and to be sitting here right now is better than I could ever dream of.”

Weather at the finish city of Fribourg at 2:30 PM, local time: 7C (45F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the west-southwest at 18 km/hr (11 mph). There is a 14% chance of rain.

The race Jan Stöckli (Corretec-Vini Fantini) did not start.

Riders await the start.

Here's the report from fourth-place Milan Menten's Team Soudal Quick-Step:

Fausto Masnada was the “engine” of the breakaway on stage 1 of the Tour de Romandie, a hilly one punctuated by several climbs, the last of which came inside ten kilometers to go. The experienced Italian attacked right from the off, drawing a response from five other riders, who joined him, opening a maximum gap of four minutes.

Masnada, a Giro stage winner and Il Lombardia runner-up, drove a strong tempo on the many hills of the 165.7km stage, helping the group stay away until after the final ascent. There, they were joined by Julian Alaphilippe, who in the meantime had attacked over the top of the climb, and Fausto moved to the front to help the move gain momentum, but the peloton reacted and shut down the move on the descent.

Alaphilippe tried another roll of the dice, with the same result, and the stage came down to a bunch sprint, won by Dorian Godon (Decathlon AG2R). Kasper Asgreen got involved and finished fifth, while Ilan Van Wilder concluded with the peloton and moved up to eighth on the general classification. After the stage, Fausto took to the podium, where he was rewarded with the trophy for the most combative rider of the day.

Weather at the race city of Payerne at 2:00 PM, local time: 6C (43F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the northeast at 21 km/hr (14 mph). There is an 11% chance of rain, grown to 24% at 4:00.

The race: First rider scheduled to start was Jenni Luca (Swiss Cycling) at 2:50 PM.

Here's the report from third-place Julian Alaphilippe's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

The prestigious Swiss race returned to Payerne after seven years, this time not for a road stage but for a prologue held on its twisty streets. The opening day of the 74th Tour de Romandie was a short and explosive one, the 2.2km course comprising a dozen corners, a tricky chicane, an undulating part close to the finish and even some cobbles.

Julian Alaphilippe was one of the few riders to like this demanding route, and the Frenchman – whose palmares features a couple of resounding time trial victories – produced a strong and fast ride that helped him stop the clock in 2:57, just two seconds off Maikel Zijlaard’s (Tudor Pro Cycling) time, who took the win Tuesday afternoon.

Making just his second outing at the Tour de Romandie after the one of 2015, Alaphilippe eventually concluded in third place, scoring his 54th World Tour podium and a result that augurs well for the upcoming stages, the first of which will be the hilly one from Château d’Oex to Fribourg. Julian wasn’t the only Soudal Quick-Step rider to put in a solid effort in Payerne, Ilan Van Wilder – who is targeting a good GC result this week – finishing only four seconds from the winner, in 12th place.
