Weather at the finish city of Poitiers at 2:05 PM, local time: 20C (68F), thunder in the vicinity, with the wind from the west at 23 km/hr (14 mph). There is an 80% chance of rain, dropping to 18% at 4:00 PM.

The race: Here's the report from third-place Giovanni Lonardi's Team Polti-VisitMalta.

After helping to control two moves of five riders each — one from long range and one inside the last 10 kilometers — Team Polti VisitMalta wrapped up the Tour Poitou Charentes with Giovanni Lonardi taking 3rd place in the explosive finish in the regional capital on a windy, rainy day. Staying with the leading group until the end, Fran Muñoz finished as the squad’s best overall in 18th place, in a GC won by Leroux (Total Energies) thanks to yesterday’s ITT.

On the start line in La Rochefoucauld-en-Angoumois

Lonardi: “It was a very fast and nervous stage. In the finale, Muñoz and Manuel Peñalver did a great job positioning me. After Peñalver led me into the final climb, I got on the Groupama train and managed to pass almost everyone. Only Izagirre was still ahead, then Godon came from behind and overtook us both. Still, it was a strong uphill sprint.”

Sports Director Stefano Zanatta: “We didn’t start on a high note, with Mirco Maestri not feeling well overnight and unable to start in the morning, but we ended with satisfaction thanks to our sprinter finishing just behind top-level opponents and ahead of a champion like Démare. A good trip!”

Tour de France: the Inside Story

Les Woodland's book Tour de France: The Inside Story - Making the World's Greatest Bicycle Race is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Jardes at 2:15 PM, local time: 22C (72F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 21 km/hr (13 mph). There is a 9% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from second-place Nicolas Milesi's Team Arkea-B&B Hotels.

Second in the time trial at the end of stage 3 of the Tour Poitou-Charentes, Nicolas Milesi takes the best young rider jersey ahead of Friday's final stage. He is now third in the provisional overall standings.

Nicolas Milesi:
I am pleased with my time. I enjoy this type of solo effort on courses like this one. After the Italian time trial championships, I did some altitude training. Since then, I have been feeling good. On the first two stages, the whole Arkea-B&B Hotels team played the Arnaud Démare card. We all worked well. Today, on this third stage, I wanted to clock a good time. And I did. I put in a great effort at the end of the race. In the last ten kilometres, I felt that my legs were strong. I just went all out. And I finished well. I took the best young rider jersey and I am third in the provisional general classification. I am happy with today and I remain focused on finishing well on the last stage on Friday, where there are still great things to achieve.

Thibault Guernalec:
It was my first time trial since my crash at the French time trial championships. There is still work to be done. I think I've done a good job since my comeback, but judging by my result, four weeks wasn't enough to compete. I didn't feel great today. I lacked a little bit to maintain my power for a long time in a time trial made difficult by the wind. I'm still a little bit off. It's a mixed bag between the satisfaction of coming back and racing here and the disappointment of my placing. I'm not in optimal shape yet. There's still work to be done before the Tour of Luxembourg.

Léonard Cosnier, Directeur sportif:
Nicolas is performing very well. This comes as no surprise. It's a performance that matches his talent. He has proven that he has a lot of power. He has had a few minor physical setbacks this year that have slowed him down. Today, he is showing that he is in great form. Finishing second in a time trial in the Tour Poitou-Charentes alongside virtually all the best French riders is a source of satisfaction. Before the final stage, he is wearing the best young rider's jersey and is third in the overall standings. Even though the final stage is not the hardest, the weather forecast is unpredictable and anything is still possible. We still have Arnaud Démare to call on in the event of a sprint finish, and the team can count on him to fight for the win as well.

Since the start of the Tour Poitou-Charentes, the Arkea-B&B Hotels team has been present and has shown great teamwork.

Weather at the finish city of Gond-Pontouvre at 2:15 PM, local time: 23C (74F), cloudy, with the wind from the southwest at 8 km/hr (5 mph). There is a 5% chance of rain.

The race: Justin Ducret (CIC-U-Nantes) did not start.

Here's the stage two report from Team Groupama-FDJ:

Unlike the opening stage, the second day of racing in the Tour Poitou-Charentes en Nouvelle Aquitaine did not go the way of the Groupama-FDJ cycling team on Wednesday, between Jonzac and Gond-Pontouvre. Cyril Barthe and his teammates couldn’t find a gap, nor make a good enough positioning to contest the final sprint. The Frenchman crossed the line in 18th place, while Lewis Bower retained the white jersey for best young rider and remains in fourth place overall.

The stage two start line.

Just like on the first day, the breakaway formed quite early on Wednesday’s stage in the Tour Poitou-Charentes en Nouvelle Aquitaine. Four riders—three of whom came from the Parkhotel Valkenburg team—broke clear shortly after the start in Jonzac, while the peloton easily took control of the chase.

“We decided not to go in the break today because our goal was to race hard in the final,” explained Philippe Mauduit. “There were three climbs where the race could have played out. The other scenario was a bunch sprint”. After quite an uneventful day, the peloton reached the final three climbs with less than a two-minute gap to the leaders. As expected, attacks occurred. “There was a move with seven riders, and we had Enzo in there,” Philippe added. “It was really important to be part of it because when a group goes with 10 kilometres to go, you never know how it might end. They caught the last men of the breakaway, but this disorganized the group, and it didn’t go very far. So it ended up being a sprint.”

The peloton eventually caught the final attacker with four kilometres to go, with a slight uphill sprint (400 metres at 5%) coming up in Gond-Pontouvre. “The goal was to set up Cyril in the best possible way,” said Philippe. “Unfortunately, as a team, we weren’t able to support him up to the start of the sprint. Positioning at 500-600 metres was absolutely crucial with a large roundabout at the bottom of a descent and right before the final climb. To have a chance, you had to be well-positioned at that moment, without having used too much energy beforehand. We didn’t manage to position ourselves, we got blocked behind, and Cyril couldn’t tackle the base of the climb in a good position”.

As a result, the Frenchman couldn’t sprint for the top spots and had to settle for 18th place across the line. Still present in the peloton, Lewis Bower slipped to fourth overall but retained the best young rider’s jersey. Up next is a 27-kilometre time trial. “The general classification will be decided tomorrow,” Philippe concluded. “Everyone will go full gas to try and get the best possible result.”

Weather at the finish city of La Genétouze at 2:50 PM, local time: 28C (83F), fair, with the wind from the west-soutwest at 13 km/hr (8 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from seventh-place Andrea Peron's Team Novo Nordisk.

Veteran Team Novo Nordisk sprinter Andrea Peron showed his late summer form on the opening stage of Tour Poitou – Charentes Nouvelle Aquitaine today, sprinting into seventh place after some strong teamwork by the American squad.

A long, but steady stage unfolded for the peloton behind four breakaway riders who went clear early, without posing a great threat to the sprinters teams who kept the situation under control.

Team Novo Nordisk stayed sheltered throughout, together until the final circuits before Peron and compatriot Filippo Ridolfo moved into position for the sprint, finishing 7th and 13th respectively.

“It was a pretty calm stage throughout,” said Peron. “Well controlled behind the break though we knew it would come to life at the very end and the last 10km were quite hectic as we approached the sprint.”

“This kind of course still suits me well and this season I’ve been feeling better as we get deeper into the year, so I came in feeling optimistic about Tour Poitou and it’s nice to start strongly. For me and for the team.”
