Weather at the finish city of Poitiers at 2:35 PM, local time: 23C (74F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the west-southwest at 35 km/hr (22 mph). There is a 7% chance of rain, rising to 23% at 5:00 PM. The roads were wet at the start.
The race: Early in the stage Clément Davy & Dylan Massa (both Nice Metropole-Cote d'Azur) abandoned. By the end of the stage 14 riders had quit the race.
Here's the report from stage winner Milan Fretin's Team Cofidis:
Having already won three days ago, the Belgian sprinter Milan Fretin did it again on the final stage of the Tour Poitou-Charentes. He clinched a hard-fought victory, taking the green jersey as the best sprinter and securing the 11th win of the season for Team Cofidis. Behind him, Ion Izagirre took third place, which saw him finish seventh in the general classification.
Milan Fretin is one of those riders who is never satisfied with a single victory for long. Three days ago, having won the first stage at Dompierre-sur-Mer, the Belgian was already eagerly looking ahead to what was to come. Frustrated by the following day’s stage (in which he finished second), Milan made up for it this Friday at the end of the final stage of the Tour Poitou-Charentes.
Milan, still in top form!
Wearing the green jersey as the best sprinter, he fought his way to victory from a group of four riders who managed to maintain a three-second lead over the rest of the peloton. Also in this group was Ion Izagirre, who battled right to the end and secured another ‘top 10’ finish in the general classification.
Milan Fretin, for his part, is proving that he remains in excellent form day after day, a form already evident in Hamburg (at the ADAC Cyclassics) in mid-August. He can now look forward to the rest of the season with enthusiasm, as he is set to compete in the Bretagne Classic CIC in two days’ time. And Milan intends to continue giving his all to fly the flag for Cofidis!
Milan Fretin:
“I’m absolutely delighted. What’s really great is that we stuck to the plan we’d set ourselves to the letter, and it worked. We came here this week to win stage victories, and we’ve won two. We can be proud of the way we raced. I’m happy for myself, but also for Ion and for everything the team has done. I was lucky enough to benefit from a very good lead-out and to be in the perfect position in the final stretch this afternoon. Everyone did a brilliant job and the best thing I could do was to bring home the victory for them. As a sprinter, the most important thing is to win races. I’m on a roll and I want it to continue!”
Evaldas Šiškevičius, sporting director:
“It was a race much like the previous three stages; there was a lot of tension, especially as there was a chance the breakaway might hold on to the end. We’d planned for every possible scenario. We knew there was that slight uphill section in the final stretch that could make all the difference. That’s where Ion Izagirre attacked, which allowed the rest of the team to focus on supporting Milan. And in the final stretch, Milan held on right to the end. It’s clear that our riders who competed in the Tour de France have that little bit extra, and Milan has simply confirmed that. It’s absolutely brilliant to finish this Tour Poitou-Charentes just as we started it: with a victory!”

Stage 4 profile
Thursday, August 27: Stage 3, Cherves - Vouillé 27.7 km individual time trial

Maxime Decomble on his way to winning the stage and the GC leadership.
Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Giro d'Italia, A Year-by-Year History of the Tour of Italy, Vol 1: 1909 - 1970 is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.
Weather at the finish city of Vouillé at 2:40 PM, local time: 23C (73F), showers in the vicinity, with the wind from the west-southwest at 10 km/hr (6 mph). There is a 60% chance of thunderstorms, declining to 6% at 4:00 PM.
The race: First rider off was Victor Guernalec (CIC Pro Cycling Team) at 2:15 PM.
Here's the report from stage winner Maxime Decomble's Team Groupama-FDJ United:
Maxime Decomble may not have been the most eagerly anticipated rider from the Groupama-FDJ United cycling team on Thursday, for the individual time trial that served as the third stage of the TPC en Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Yet it was indeed he who triumphed after 27 kilometres of solo effort, beating his teammate and French national time trial champion Rémi Cavagna by 28 seconds at the finish, thereby securing his very first professional victory. To top it all off, he also took the race lead on the eve of the final stage to Poitiers.
Usually decisive for the final general classification, the time trial of the TPC en Nouvelle-Aquitaine was held between Cherves and Vouillé this year, over a 27-kilometre course with no major difficulties. “It was a very flat course, suited to specialists, with some false-flat uphill sections where you had to avoid cracking, especially as they were located in the second half of the race,” explained team coach Anthony Bouillod. “You still had to manage your effort well.”
Wearing his French champion’s jersey, Rémi Cavagna naturally attracted all eyes on this third stage, but he started relatively early, just one hour after the time trial got underway. “During our simulation yesterday, we saw that the conditions could improve for the later starters,” Anthony continued. “The riders were therefore advised during the briefing to position themselves towards the front so they could start fairly late today. Unfortunately, as we know, Rémi was caught behind a crash, which cost him time and forced him to start a little earlier than Maxime today. When he set off, the road was still slightly wet over the first third of the course following showers in the early afternoon, whereas it was completely dry for the later starters. There was also a slight change in the wind.”
Despite this, Rémi Cavagna lived up to his status as the overwhelming favourite, setting the fastest time at every intermediate checkpoint before stopping the clock at 30:51. “His performance lived up to expectations,” Anthony confirmed. “He had a pacing plan, with a power level he needed to maintain, and he stuck to it.” Over the following hour, several riders came close and threatened his time, but none managed to take his place in the “hot seat”. Before the final 20 riders set off, he therefore remained in the lead.
But at 4:42 p.m., Maxime Decomble appeared on the start ramp, and the young Frenchman made an immediate impression at the first intermediate checkpoint, after nine kilometres, as he was already three seconds ahead of his teammate. The gap increased to 14 seconds after almost 20 kilometres of racing. In the final section, the former rider from “La Conti” showed no sign of slowing down and took the fastest time with a mark of 30:23, almost 30 seconds faster than Rémi Cavagna. “I’m really pleased with my effort,” he said. “We had planned a pacing strategy, but I was feeling really good and you have to know how to adapt. I was always a little higher, and Tanguy was pushing me. I was also lucky to start on a dry course, and I had Rémi’s split times, which helped me. I felt great, I was managing to gain time and then push even harder. It’s a really great feeling.”
“The time difference is not entirely due to the conditions, but certainly partly,” Anthony explained, before adding: “I think Maxime’s power numbers were slightly above what had been planned. It is a continuation of his Tour du Limousin, where he finished very strongly in his role of protecting the yellow jersey. Today, he put in a huge time trial and really made the most of his qualities on the uphill sections. Excellent pacing, very good physical condition, and an outstanding performance at the finish.”It was a performance that no other competitor was able to match, earning Maxime Decomble his first professional victory.
“I’m absolutely delighted, and I’m very proud,” he said. “I had a start to the season with quite a few WorldTour races, but that gave me a solid base and helped me take a step up. I’m happy to show today that I’ve made progress, particularly in the time trial, which is a discipline I really enjoy.” “It’s really fantastic,” Anthony celebrated. “His start to the season, mainly at WorldTour level, has helped him progress. He also completed an altitude training camp in July, with the aim of reaching a peak of form for these races. That is what has enabled him to claim his first professional victory, and hopefully a second one tomorrow.”
Thanks to his dominant victory, the 21-year-old naturally took over the lead in the general classification, heading into the final stage with a 33-second advantage over his nearest rival. “Tomorrow, the priority will obviously be to keep the jersey,” Anthony concluded. “We’ll need to ride a strong race so that we reach the final kilometres with everyone together. If that is the case, and Maxime’s position is secured, it will also give us the opportunity to go for the sprint.”

Stage 3 profile
Wednesday, August 26: Stage 2, Puilboreau - Lezay, 199.5 km

Doesn't get much closer. Jason Tesson (on left) wins stage two.
Bill & Carol McGann’s book The Story of the 2024 Tour de France: The Happy Warrior Triumphs is available print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the link on the right.
Weather at the finish city of Lezay at 2:35 PM, local time: 28C (83F), fair, with the wind from the east at 18 km/hr (11 mph). There is just a 2% chance of rain.
The race: Maël Guégan (CIC Pro Cycling Academy) did not start.
Here's the stage two report from GC leader Milan Fretin's Cofidis team:
After winning the opening stage, Milan Fretin was once again in the mix this Wednesday at the Tour du Poitou-Charentes en Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The Belgian sprinter took 2nd place in Lezay and retained his overall leader’s jersey.
The riders faced almost 200 kilometres between Puilboreau and Lezay. Five riders quickly went clear, and with the overall leader’s jersey in its ranks, Cofidis took responsibility for controlling the gap.
Clément Izquierdo did a huge amount of work at the front of the peloton for much of the day. The breakaway was eventually caught with 10 kilometres to go.
Two riders then tried their luck in the finale before being caught with 3 kilometres remaining. Despite a tricky final circuit with crosswinds and a crash that held up Piet Allegaert with 5 kilometres to go, the team remained focused on supporting Milan Fretin.
The Belgian contested the sprint and finished 2nd, beaten on the line by Jason Tesson. Thanks to another strong result, he retains the overall lead ahead of Thursday’s time trial.
Evaldas Šiškevičius, Sports Director:
“Today, we were the team with the leader’s jersey, so we knew we would have work to do to control the race. Clément Izquierdo did a huge job, riding on the front for almost 160 km, and I want to congratulate him. Then the whole team worked around Milan to protect him.
"The final circuit was a little tricky with the crosswinds, but the team did a good job. Unfortunately, with 5 km to go, Piet Allegaert was held up by a crash. That’s what we were missing in the finale to give Milan the perfect lead-out. He still finished second, which is a very good result, and keeps his leader’s jersey. Tomorrow, it’s time for the time trial.”

Weather at the finish city of Dompierre-sur-Mer at 2:40 PM, local time: 26C (79F), fair, with the wind from the southwest at 19 km/hr (12 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain, though it did rain on the riders halfway into the stage.
The race: Here's the report from second-place Paul Penhoët's Team Groupama-FDJ United.
On paper, the opening stage of the TPC in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, also known as the Tour Poitou-Charentes, was bound to favor the sprinters. In practice, it was indeed the fast men who took center stage in Dompierre-sur-Mer after 191 kilometers. Paul Penhoët then carried the hopes of the Groupama-FDJ United cycling team, with only Milan Fretin managing to beat him to the finish line. Another mass sprint is expected on Wednesday in Lezay.
Before the time-trial specialists take the spotlight on Thursday, during the individual time trial that is always decisive on the “TPC,” the sprinters had their shot on Tuesday for the opening stage of the French race. A bunch sprint seemed the only realistic outcome, particularly as a breakaway of just five riders formed early in the race. “It wasn’t a dangerous breakaway, so we didn’t take control from the start,” explained William Green. “Later on, though, there was a possibility that the other teams would stop riding into the headwind if they weren’t getting any help, so we eventually joined the chase. We tried to adapt as well as possible to deliver the best performance we could. We have a very strong team here, both for the general classification and for the sprint, and we were highly motivated today. The goal was to back Paul in the final, as it suited him well.”
The breakaway never gained more than a three-minute advantage, and Groupama-FDJ United took on its responsibilities through Johan Jacobs. “Since we started riding fairly late, Johan felt capable of pulling at the front of the peloton and doing his job in the final,” William added. “He was a key teammate today.”
The Swiss rider’s work, combined with that of the other sprint teams, enabled the peloton to catch the breakaway just after the first passage across the finish line, with about 15 kilometres to go. “We knew the circuit would be quite technical,” William explained. “There was quite a lot of road furniture, some wind and narrow roads, so we took control for the whole last lap. Even before crossing the finish line for the first time, we moved to the front with confidence and really gave it everything in the final.”
Then, thanks in particular to the work of Blake Agnoletto, Cyril Barthe and Matteo Milan in the closing kilometers, the Groupama-FDJ United lead-out train remained at the front to put Paul Penhoët in the best possible position. “The initial plan was for Matteo to launch Paul,” William explained. “Coming into the final 500 metres, Matteo was at the front, but there was a bit of a headwind, so Paul decided to move back into fourth position and launch his effort from behind. Fretin went just after that, around 350 meters from the finish, and caught Paul somewhat by surprise. But, to be honest, there wasn’t much we could do. Paulo was beaten by a faster rider on the day. There are no regrets, and we are very pleased with the team’s performance.” The French sprinter therefore had to settle for second place, while the rest of his teammates were awarded the same finishing time following a crash in the final.
On Wednesday, a second round between the sprinters is expected in Lezay, after 200 kilometers.
