Weather at the start/finish city of Bintulu at 12:20 PM, local time: 30C (86F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 5 km/hr (3 mph). There is a 24% chance of rain.

The race: Here is the race organizer's final 2024 race report.

Team DSM-Firmenich PostNL rider Max Poole made history by becoming the second British cyclist to be crowned as the overall champion of Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) 2024 on Sunday.

The climbing specialist was crowned champion with an overall time of 26:27.44, also claiming the Green Jersey for this year’s 28th edition.

Poole can take pride in maintaining the reputation of British riders in the LTdL, following EF Education-EasyPost’s Simor Carr, who won in 2023.

Although he finished the final stage in Bintulu at 35th place with a time of three hours, seven minutes, and 38 seconds, this was sufficient for Poole to secure the championship.

Notably, at 21 years and 219 days old, Poole became one of the youngest champion of this prestigious Asian race, just one day older than the youngest ever champion, Jonathan Monsalve, who won in 2011 at 21 years and 218 days.

“I came to Malaysia not to make new history for the LTdL. Honestly, I never thought about becoming the youngest winner. Instead, I focused on each stage of the race.

“Perhaps my victory in Stage 3 (from Taiping to Cameron Highlands) opened the door for me to become the overall champion.

“I’m thrilled with my success in the LTdL this year; it was a fantastic week. I hope to return next year to defend my title. This victory gives me motivation to pursue more achievements in my professional career,” said Poole.

Second place went to Thomas Pesenti from JCL Team Ukyo, who finished just 0.13 seconds behind Poole, while Unai Iribar Jauregi from Equipo Kern Pharma came in third with 26:28.04.

The best Malaysian rider was Muhammad Nur Aiman Mohd Zariff from Terengganu Cycling Team (TSG), who placed 41st overall with a time of 26:35.18.

In addition to Poole’s remarkable victory, LTdL 2024 also saw JCL Team Ukyo’s Matteo Malucelli achieve a hat trick, being crowned the King of Sprints.

After winning Stages 2 and 7, the Italian sprinter secured victory in Stage 8, a 147.5-kilometer race around Bintulu, which began and ended at Lasar Kenyalang, today.

The final stage is given its official start.

This final stage win was enough for Malucelli to clinch the Orange Jersey, denying Tudor Pro Cycling Team’s Arvid de Kleijn the chance to retain his sprint title.

Malucelli accumulated 80 points, two points ahead of de Kleijn, who won Stages 4 and 5, while Gleb Syritsa from Astana Qazaqstan Team finished third with 57 points.

“Once again, thanks to my teammates; they did a great job. My tactics today were the same as yesterday – I just attacked at the end of the race. I never expected to win three stage victories in the LTdL this year. Winning three stages and the Orange Jersey is amazing,” Malucelli said.

Meanwhile, JCL Team UKYO’s Manabu Ishibashi confirmed his status as the Best Asian Rider, wearing the White Jersey with an overall time of 26:30.02.

The Polka Dot Jersey for the King of the Mountains went to Munoz Mario Aparicio from Burgos-BH, who collected 27 points after there were no climbing zones in the final stage.

As expected, the Spanish-based Equipo Kern Pharma emerged as the overall team champion with a total time of 79:24.12, followed closely by Astana Qazaqstan Team (79:25.42) and Team Polti Kometa (79:25.52).

JCL Team UKYO won the best Asian team with a total time of 79:35.36, followed by the national team from Thailand (79:58.24) and Malaysia Pro Cycling (MPC) at 79:58.46.

Matteo Malucelli wins stage seven.

Why Your Bike is Made in Asia

Weather at the finish city of Bintulu at 11:15 AM, local time: 26C (78F), light rain shower, with the wind from the east at 3 km/hr (2 mph). Early in the stage the rain came down hard. During the afternoon there is an 18% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage seven summary.

JCL Team Ukyo rider Matteo Malucelli put on a powerful performance to win Stage 7 of Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) 2024 at Lasar Kenyalang on Saturday.

The race, which started from Miri Waterfront over a distance of 199.3 kilometers, saw Malucelli, a 30-year-old Italian sprinter, clock in at four hours, 18 minutes, and 3 seconds.

Stage 7 had a wet start.

His final sprint in the last 10 meters allowed him to overtake two Tudor Pro Cycling Team riders, Arvid de Kleijn and Maikel Zijlaard.

Before being passed by Malucelli in the closing moments, Zijlaard created an opening for de Kleijn as they approached the finish line.

However, Malucelli was able to surge ahead with a burst of energy which enabled him to slip through the pack to achieve a dramatic finish.

“My teammates did a great job in today’s race. It was an amazing finish as I managed to overtake two Tudor riders at the end. All our hard work since the beginning of the race today paid off. In the last 3 kilometers, my teammate and I started looking for openings to position ourselves at the front.

“In the final 100 meters, I saw an opportunity and moved ahead to pass the two Tudor riders in the last 10 meters. I’m really happy with today’s win,” said Malucelli.

About 17 kilometers into the stage, it is pouring rain.

In the longest stage of LTdL 2024, Terengganu Cycling Team (TSG) rider, Muhammad Nur Aiman Rosli emerged as the best Malaysian, finishing in 22nd place with a time of 4:18:03s.

His teammate, Mohamad Nur Aiman Mohd Zariff, drew attention by being named the ‘Most Combative Rider’ after being a key player for TSG in Stage 7.

Meanwhile, David Max Poole from Team DSM-Firmenich PostNL looks set to be crowned the LTdL champion this year, with one stage remaining.

Even though he finished 50th in Stage 7, the 21-year-old climbing specialist from Great Britain retained the Green Jersey as overall leader with a time of 23:20:06.

Poole now leads by 13 seconds over JCL Team Ukyo’s Thomas Pesenti, while Unai Iribar Jauregi from Equipo Kern Pharma is in third place with an overall time of 23:20:26.

The Polka Dot Jersey for the King of the Mountains for LTdL 2024 looks set confirmed to belong to Burgos-BH rider Munoz Mario Aparicio, who has amassed 27 points with three climbing zones in the final stage on Sunday.

The competition for the Orange Jersey as the King of the Sprint is intensifying, with Malucelli and de Kleijn continuing their rivalry into the final stage tomorrow, as both sprinters are separated by just one point.

De Kleijn, who won Stages 4 and 5 this edition, currently holds the Orange Jersey with 66 points, while Malucelli has 65 points.

Known as Little Gorilla, de Kleijn expressed mixed feelings after missing the chance for victory in Stage 7, despite still wearing the Orange Jersey.

“Of course, I’m quite disappointed for not winning today. At one point, the victory was within reach, but due to a slight mistake, I missed the opportunity. I hope to make up for this disappointment in the final stage tomorrow. This is my last chance to add a victory at LTdL while also defending my status as King of the Sprint,” he explained.

JCL Team UKYO’s Manabu Ishibashi maintained the White Jersey (Best Asian) with a time of 23:22:24, followed by his teammate Yuma Koishi (23:25:05) and Keigo Kusaba from Aisan Racing Team (23:25:09).

In the overall standing, Equipo Kern Pharma continues to lead with a time of 70:01:18, followed by Astana Qazaqstan Team (70:02:49) and Team Polti Kometa (70:02:58).

For the Asian category, JCL Team UKYO also remains the overall leader with a time of 70:12:42, followed by the national team of Thailand (70:35:30) and Malaysia Pro Cycling (MPC) at 70:35:52.

Stage 8, the final stage on Sunday, will cover a distance of 147.5 km starting and ending at Lasar Kenyalang, featuring three sprint zones at Kem Batu 18, Lasar Kenyalang 1, and Lasar Kenyalang 2.

Weather at the finish city of Kulai at 9:05 AM, local time: 27C (80F), fair. No wind. There is a 16% chance of rain, growing to 60% at 1:00 PM.

The race: Antonio Angulo (Burgos-BH) did not start.

Here's the race organizer's stage six report:

VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizane rider, Manuele Tarozzi demonstrated exceptional skill by winning Stage 6 of the PETRONAS Le Tour de Langkawi 2024 which took place from Dataran Penggaram, Batu Pahat to Kulai over a distance of 123.4 kilometers on Friday.

Tarozzi crossed the finish line with a time of 2 hours, 28 minutes, and 58 seconds, beating EF Education-Easypost’s Stefan de Bod, who finished in second place.

Tarozzi and de Bod were neck to neck with 500 meters remaining, but the 26-year-old Italian’s strong sprint propelled him to victory.

Tudor Pro Cycling Team’s Arvid de Kleijn finished third with a time of 2:29:07.

Malaysian Pro Cycling (MPC) rider Ahmad Syazrin Awang Ilah was the best Malaysian finisher, placing 23rd with a time of 2:29:07.

It's time to race.

“I’m really happy today; everything went according to plan. I maintained my pace during the breakaway and then sprinted faster in the last 2 kilometers. I knew Stefan would challenge me at the end, but I tried to stay ahead. My strategy worked today,” said Tarozzi.

When asked about the head-to-head situation with Tarozzi, de Bod acknowledged that his rival was more prepared mentally and physically in the final 500 meters.

“I tried to challenge and catch him from behind, but I couldn’t. I feel a bit disappointed for not winning today, but I’ll keep trying in the next two stages. Today’s race was a learning experience, and I’ll use it as motivation to chase victory in this race,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Team DSM-Firmenich PostNL rider David Max Poole, who finished 33rd in Stage 6, retained the Green Jersey as the overall leader with a time of 19:02:03.

He is closely followed by JCL Team UKYO’s Thomas Pesenti, who is 0.14 seconds behind, and Unai Iribar Jauregi from Equipo Kern Pharma in third.

Despite missing out on a third consecutive win after victories in Stages 4 and 5, de Kleijn was still smiling as he held the Orange Jersey for the King of the Sprint.

Known as ‘Little Gorilla’, de Kleijn accumulated 54 points, four points ahead of Matteo Malucelli from JCL Team UKYO, who has 50 points.

As there were no climbing zones in Stage 6, the Polka Dot Jersey (King of the Mountains) remained with Burgos-BH rider Munoz Mario Aparicio, who has 27 points, followed by David Max Poole (22 points) and Anthon Charmig from Astana Qazaqstan Team (12 points).

JCL Team UKYO’s Manabu Ishibashi maintained the White Jersey (Best Asian) with a time of 19:04:21, followed by his teammate Yuma Koishi (19:07:02) and Keigo Kusaba from Aisan Racing Team (19:07:06).

Meanwhile, Equipo Kern Pharma continued to lead the overall standings with a time of 57:07:09, followed by Astana Qazaqstan Team (57:08:40) and Team Polti Kometa (57:08:49). In the Asian category, JCL Team UKYO also remains in the overall lead with a time of 57:18:33, followed by the Thailand national team (57:41:21) and MPC (57:41:43).

The final two stages will see Sarawak as the host, with Stage 7 on Saturday starting from Miri to Bintulu over a distance of 199.3 kilometers, featuring three sprint zones in Suai, Nyalau, and Kidurong, and one climbing zone in Bintulu.

Weather at the finish city of Melaka at 11:40 AM, local time: 28C (82F), light rain shower, with the wind from the south-wouthwest at 5 km/hr (3 mph). By 2:00 PM the chance for rain drops to 18%.

The race: Giovanni Carboni (JCL Team UKYO) did not start.

Here's the race organzer's stage five report:

Tudor Pro Cycling Team rider, Arvid de Kleijn again displayed his prowess by winning Stage 5 of Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) 2024 at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) on Thursday.

Also known as the ‘Little Gorilla’, de Kleijn was able to surge ahead in the final 100 meters, crossing the finish line with a time of three hours, 35 minutes, and 30 seconds.

“I must thank my teammates for today’s win. Without their support, it would have been tough to replicate my victory from yesterday.

“As I said before, every race promises fierce competition because every rider wants to win, regardless of the stage.

“This victory definitely boosts my motivation to chase more wins in the next stages, but I don’t want to be overconfident,” said de Kleijn.

JCL Team UKYO’s Matteo Malucelli, who finished as runner-up in Stage 4 on Wednesday, had to settle for second place yet again, while Gleb Syritsa from the Kazakhstan Astana Team came in third in the race that started from the Twin Towers (KLCC) and covered a distance of 167.3 kilometers.

Muhammad Nur Aiman Rosli from Terengganu Cycling Team (TSG) was the best Malaysian rider, finishing 21st with a time of 3:35:34.

With this victory, de Kleijn matches his achievement from last year’s edition by winning two stages after also claiming the Stage 4 title from Kuala Kubu Bharu to Bentong on Wednesday.

At 30 years old, he has the opportunity to add more wins to his career in this prestigious Asian cycling event with three stages remaining.

Meanwhile, David Max Poole from Team DSM-Firmenich PostNL, who finished Stage 5 at 49th, retains the Green Jersey as the overall leader with a time of 16:33:04.

The 21-year-old climbing specialist from Great Britain faces a close challenge from Burgos-BH’s Jose Manuel Diaz Galledo, with only 0.12 seconds separating them.

The Polka Dot Jersey for King of the Mountains remains with Munoz Mario Aparicio of Burgos-BH, who added seven points to his total, bringing him to 27 points so far.

Weather at the finish city of Bentong at 11:40 AM, local time: 89F, mostly cloudy, with the wind from the southeast at 5 km/hr (3 mph). Thrre is a 50% chance of rain, growing to 95% at 2:00 PM.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage four report.

Arvid de Kleijn of Tudor Pro Cycling Team showcased his winning mentality by capturing Stage 4 of Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) 2024 at Dataran Bentong on Wednesday.

Known as ‘Little Gorilla’, de Kleijn completed the 131.2-kilometer race from Kuala Kubu Bharu, Selangor, in two hours, 53 minutes, and 37 seconds.

“The race today was quite difficult for sprinters due to the climbs at GAP. However, all the riders did a great job in catching the breakaway group, and I just focused on my sprint.

“I must give credit to my teammates who worked hard throughout the race. I felt responsible for not being able to help the team in the previous two stages,” said de Kleijn.

He then added, even though the race was pretty intense today, he was able to gain his best momentum, similar to his performance last year when he won two stages of LTdL.

De Kleijn’s victory in Stage 4 adds to his collection of wins in the LTdL, having previously won Stages 1 and 6 in 2023.

Matteo Malucelli from JCL Team UKYO, who won Stage 2 on Monday, finished in second place, followed by Manuel Penalver from Team Polti Kometa at third.

Mohamad Nur Aiman Mohd Zariff from Terengganu Cycling Team (TSG) was the best Malaysian rider in this stage, finishing 25th with the same time as the leader.

Despite not making it to the podium today, David Max Poole from Team DSM-Firmenich PostNL retained the Green Jersey as the overall leader with a time of 12:57:35.

The 21-year-old climbing specialist from Great Britain is closely followed by Thomas Pesenti from JCL Team UKYO, just 0.06 seconds behind, while Unai Iribar from Equipo Kern Pharma finished third.

While Poole managed to defend the Green Jersey, he lost the Polka Dot Jersey (King of the Mountains) to Munoz Mario Aparicio from Burgos-BH, who now has 20 points, with Poole in second place at 15 points and Anthon Charmig from
Astana Qazaqstan Team in third with 12 points.

Malucelli maintained the Orange Jersey as the Sprint King with 34 points, followed by de Kleijn with 30 points and Gleb Syritsa from Astana Qazaqstan Team, who won Stage 1 with 26 points.

Manabu Ishibashi from JCL Team UKYO kept the White Jersey (Best Asian) with a time of 12:59:44, followed by teammate Yuma Koishi (13:02:25) and Keigo Kusaba from Aisan Racing Team (AIS) (13:02:29).

In the overall team classifications, Equipo Kern Pharma remains the overall leader with a time of 38:53:18 after four stages.

Astana Qazaqstan Team is following close at second, totalling 38:54:49, followed by Team Polti Kometa at third with 38:54:58.

In the Asian category, JCL Team UKYO leads with a total time of 39:04:42, followed by the national team from Thailand (39:27;30) and Malaysia Pro Cycling (MPC) (39:27:52).

Stage 5 on Thursday will start from the Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur (KLCC) to Melaka over a distance of 167.3 kilometers, featuring three sprint zones in Semenyih, Seremban, and Rembau, along with three climbing zones in Ampang, Bukit Hantu, and Mantin.

Weather at the city of Brinchang, on the route, 8 kms from the finish at 11:20 AM, local time: 22C (71F), rain, with the wind from the west at 5 km/hr (3 mph). The rain is forecast to continue through the afternoon.

The race: Oliver Bleddyn (ARA | Skip Capital), Mohd Jumari (Malaysia), Ratchanon Yapwarat (Thailand) & Jan Paul Morales (Philippines) did not start.

Here's the race organizer's stage three report:

Team DSM-Firmenich PostNL rider David Max Poole proved his climbing prowess by winning Stage 3 of Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) 2024 on Tuesday.

The race, covering 170.3 kilometers from Taiping, Perak to Cameron Highlands, saw Poole cross the finish line first, completing the course in four hours, 24 minutes and 34 seconds.

Astana Qazaqstan’s Harold Martin Lopez finished second, while Thomas Pesenti from JCL Team UKYO secured third place, both recording the same time.

Malaysian rider, Muhammad Syawal Mazlin from Pro Cycling (MPC) was the best Malaysian finisher, placing 44th with a time of 4:29:17s.

“I was surrounded by many great climbers as I approached the finish line. I choose to wait for the right moment before making my final sprint and it worked out well. I’m happy to get my first win here,” said the 21-year-old from Scunthorpe, England

Stage 3 gets started.

With his victory at Cameron Highlands, Poole took over the Green Jersey from Gleb Syritsa of Astana Qazaqstan Team, who was the overall leader with a time of 10:03:58s, just 0.05 seconds ahead of Lopez.

Lopez commented, “He (Poole) was stronger in the sprint, but I’m still happy with second place. There are many more stages and maybe we can achieve a better result.”

Syritsa, who won Stage 1 in Langkawi last Sunday, had to concede his overall leader status after finishing 90th in this stage.

In addition to the Green Jersey, Poole, also claimed the Polka Dot Jersey (King of the Mountains) by earning 15 points, followed by Astana Qazaqstan’s Anthon Charmig with 12 points and Lopez with 11 points.

Meanwhile, young rider Muhammad Nur Aiman Rosli from Terengganu Cycling Team (TSG) lost his status as the Best Asian Rider to JCL Team UKYO’s Manabu Ishibashi.

Aiman had worn the White Jersey in the first two stages but dropped to 58th in Stage 3.

The Orange Jersey for the Sprint King went to JCL Team UKYO’s Matteo Malucelli, who won Stage 2 from Arau, Perlis, to Butterworth, Penang on Monday.

Malucelli overtook the previous holder, Syritsa by two points after the former was handed a penalty which saw him docked three points resulting him dropping to second with 20 points, followed by Manuel Penalver from Team Polti Kometa with 17 points.

Equipo Kern Pharma is now leading the overall standings with a time of 30:12:27, followed by Astana Qazaqstan Team (30:13:58) and Team Polti Kometa (30:14:07).

In the Asian category, JCL Team UKYO leads with an overall time of 30:14:25, followed by TSG (30:27:37) and MPC (30:34:04).

Stage 4 on Wednesday will start from Kuala Kubu Bharu, Selangor to Bentong, Pahang, covering 131.2 kilometers and featuring three sprint zones in Raub, Sungai Ruan and Sungai Klau, as well as one climbing zone at GAP.

Matteo Malucelli (JCL Team UKYO) wins stage two.

Tour de France: 2021

Bill & Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, 2021: The Little Cannibal Dominates is available in both Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Butterworth at 11:10 AM, local time: 31C (87F), fair, with the wind from the northwest at 3 km/hr (2 mph). There is an 80% chance of rain, growing to 100% at 2:00 PM.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage two report.

Spanish cyclist, Matteo Malucelli today delivered a powerful performance to win Stage 2 of Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) 2024, from Arau to Butterworth.

Representing JCL Team Ukyo, Malucelli crossed the finishing line with a time of 3 hours, 34 minutes, and 58 seconds, followed by Manuel Penalver from Team Polti Kometa, and Arvid de Kleijn from Tudor Pro Cycling Team in third place.

Meanwhile, experienced rider Mohd Harrif Saleh from Terengganu Cycling Team (TSG) attracted attention by being the best Malaysian rider in Stage 2, finishing at seventh place.

“I am very happy with my first victory in a 2 Pro race. This will certainly motivate me to continue pursuing wins in this professional tour. This victory is important not just for me but also for our team. We have been working hard for several weeks to prepare for this LTdL,” said Malucelli.

“I am satisfied to finally deliver a win for the team. Thank you to my teammates who supported me throughout today’s race,” he added.

The 154.5 kilometer Stage 2 was marred by a crash involving several riders, including Malaysian, Philippines and Thai national cyclists, who had to be rushed to the Seberang Jaya hospital,Penang.

The incident occurred about 100 meters from the finish line when a rider collided with a roadside barrier during the sprint to the finish.

“About 200 meters from the end, I saw more space on the right. So, I focused on the right and sprinted towards the finish. I didn’t know what was happening behind me (the crash). It’s unfortunate for those who crashed as everyone was trying to find space to sprint in the straight stretch,” explained Malucelli.

Meanwhile, Gleb Syritsa from Astana Qazaqstan Team, who finished fifth, retained the Green Jersey as the overall leader with a time of 5:39:23.

Syritsa, who won Stage 1 in Langkawi yesterday, is closely followed by Malucelli, with only a 0.02-second time difference, while TSG’s Muhammad Nur Aiman Rosli is in third place with a time of 5:39:27.

Aiman retains the White Jersey as the Best Asian rider, challenged by HKS Pro Cycling Team’s Ng Pak Hang and Malaysian national rider, Muhammad Yusri Shaari.

Syritsa, considered a top contender for the LTdL 2024 title, also maintained the Orange Jersey as the King of the Mountains, amassing a total of 23 points, followed by Malucelli with 22 points and Penalver with 17 points.

Stage 1 map & profile

Astana Qazaqstan's Gleb Syritsa wins stage one.

Story of the Tour de France Volume 2

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, Vol 2: 1976 - 2018 is available in print, Kindle eBook & Audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the start/finish city of Kuah at 8:20 AM, local time: 27C (80F), light rain, with the wind from the southwest at 13 km/hr (8 mph). The rain is forecast to end about 2:00 PM.

The race: Here's the organizer's stage one report.

Astana Qazaqstan Team rider, Gleb Syritsa sent an early warning to his rivals by winning Stage 1 of the Petronas Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) 2024 in Kuah, today.

In the 96.5-kilometer race, Syritsa crossed the finishing line in two hours, four minutes, and 37 seconds, beating his competitors, Casper Van Uden from Team dsm-firmenich PostNL, who finished second, followed by Lorenzo Conforti from VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizane at third.

This victory also earned Syritsa, a Russian sprinter who won two stages in LTdL 2023, the Green Jersey as the overall leader.

“It was a good start for our team. My teammates did a great job, especially at the end of the race, which allowed me to win Stage 1 today.

“Approaching the finish line, it wasn’t very risky because I had teammates protecting me. I’m definitely happy with this win and believe I can win more in the upcoming races,” Syritsa said.

It's a rainy day in Malaysia. Early in the stage a break has a small gap.

In addition to the Green Jersey, Syritsa also claimed the title of King of Sprints with a total of 17 points, while Van Uden secured second place with 12 points and Conforti third with nine points.

The Polka Dot Jersey for King of the Mountains was awarded to Tyler Tomkinson from Ara Skip Capital after he scored two points in the climbing zone at Look Out Point, with Terengganu Cycling Team’s Muhammad Nur Aiman Rosli coming in second with one point.

Despite this, Aiman could take pride in winning the White Jersey as the Best Asian Rider after finishing second in two sprint zones and the climbing zone.

“I’m grateful that my strategy and my team’s efforts paid off in Langkawi today. I made a breakaway early in the race, and that tactic worked, allowing me to earn the White Jersey. I hope to defend this jersey until the last stage in Sarawak. But ultimately, it depends on the team’s strategy and my coach; I will do my best,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Malaysia Pro Cycling (MPC) rider Mohammad Izzat Hilmi Abdul Halil also caught attention by finishing seventh overall, making him the best Malaysian rider.

“I want to thank my teammates who helped a lot at the beginning of the race. In the last kilometer, I was a bit behind, but I tried to catch up with the front group.

“I kept pushing, and in the last 500 meters, I realized I was in the top 10, so I sprinted as best as I could and ended up finishing strong,” he said.

The second stage on Monday will start from Arau, Perlis, to Butterworth, Penang, covering a distance of 154.5 kilometers.

The route features three sprint zones in Jitra, Menara Alor Setar, and Sungai Petani, Kedah.
