Weather at the start/finish city of Arnhem at 2:15 PM, local time: 13C (56F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the southeast at 16 km/hr (10 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The stage: At 12:30 p.m., the riders depart from the Market Square, reaching the official start on Zijpendaalseweg at 12:04 p.m. From there, the route features a beautiful and varied 1.7-kilometer gravel section, included in every lap.

The course winds through the lush Sonsbeek Park, past the picturesque village of Schaarsbergen, and alongside the renowned Netherlands Open Air Museum, before returning to the Zijpendaalseweg for the finish.

This unique blend of city park, natural scenery, and cultural heritage makes the stage a special experience for both riders and spectators.

The race: Here's the report from GC winner Christophe Laporte's Team Visma | Lease a Bike:

Christophe Laporte has won the first edition of the Tour of Holland. In the final stage through Arnhem, the 32-year-old Frenchman defended his lead in the general classification without problems. For Laporte, it was his first victory of the season.

"I am extremely happy. It's great to end the season with a victory. If you had told me this a few months ago, I wouldn't have believed it", said Laporte, who had to miss most of the season due to a persistent virus. It has been a difficult season for me personally, but I am glad that I can end it this way."

The final stage of the Dutch stage race took place in Arnhem, where the riders had to complete eleven local laps of about thirteen kilometres. Halfway through the stage, the peloton split into two groups. Laporte was alertly and found himself in the first part of the peloton. After everything had come back together, four riders broke away in the final phase.

Danny van Poppel stayed ahead of his fellow escapees and took the stage win. Just behind him, Olav Kooij sprinted to sixth place. Laporte reached the finish line unscathed and secured the overall victory. "It was a difficult day to control, but the team did a great job. In the final, we wanted to go for the stage win with Olav, but we couldn't catch the leaders", Laporte said.

Sports director Arthur van Dongen looks back on a successful week. "An overall victory in a stage race is always nice, especially for Christophe, who has had a difficult time. The men worked very hard to secure the victory. I am proud of that. In addition to the overall victory, we also had the goal of winning a stage, but we just didn't quite make it. Nevertheless, I can look back on a good week."

As far as Van Dongen is concerned, the Tour of Holland is here to stay. "As a Dutchman, it's great to race in my own country. I think it can grow into a great event on the calendar, as there is a lot of demand for it. It feels really good to end it this way."

Saturday, October 18: Stage 4, Emmen - VAM-Berg Drenthe, 159 km

Timo de Jong wins stage 4. Christophe Laporte (head down, yellow jersey) becomes the new GC leader.Cycling's 50 Craziest Stories

Weather at the start city of Emmen at 2:20 PM, local time: 11C (52F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the southeast at 13 km/hr (8 mph). No rain is forecast.

The stage: At 12:15 p.m., the riders depart from the Market Square. Five minutes later, at 12:20 p.m., the official start is given on Slenerweg. From there, the peloton winds its way through the peaceful Drenthe countryside, past forests, heathlands, and traditional village greens, heading toward the highlight of the day: the VAM-berg.

The VAM-berg is Drenthe’s highest point and a much-loved climb in Dutch cycling. With multiple steep sides – including sections of up to 16.4% – it’s a serious test for the legs. The peloton tackles this climb several times, giving spectators plenty of opportunities to witness the action up close.

On the VAM-Berg, a fast finale unfolds towards the finish, where the winner is celebrated to loud applause

The race: Here's the report from new GC leader Christophe Laporte's Team Visma | Lease a Bike.

Christophe Laporte has taken the overall lead in the Tour of Holland on the penultimate day. The 32-year-old Frenchman from Team Visma | Lease a Bike made the race hard himself and narrowly missed out on the stage win. Laporte will start as the overall leader in tomorrow’s final stage, holding a 37-second advantage over his closest rival, Lukas Kubis. The victory went to Timo de Jong.

The riders faced a demanding 159-kilometer stage, finishing on the VAM-berg. After the start in Emmen, the peloton headed toward the climb, where twelve local laps awaited them.

A breakaway of seven riders was given some freedom by the peloton after the start. The group reached the local circuits with a two-minute advantage. The succession of ascents of the VAM-berg gradually thinned out the peloton. For Team Visma | Lease a Bike, Laporte, Olav Kooij, and Julien Vermote were part of the select group with 30 kilometers remaining.

With 30 kilometers to go, Laporte launched an attack after strong work from Vermote and Kooij. The Frenchman was joined only by Lukas Kubis. The duo cooperated well to bridge across to the breakaway, succeeding with just over ten kilometers left. Despite several attacks, the final climb of the VAM-berg proved decisive. In the uphill sprint, early escapee De Jong proved the strongest. Laporte finished second and took over the overall lead.

“It was my goal to win today, but I also had to make the choice to go all-in for the overall classification,” Laporte said afterward. “With a few laps to go, I decided to accelerate. Julien and Olav kept a high pace in the peloton, and then it was up to me to close the gap to the front. I gave everything to go for the stage win as well, but in the end, the tank was empty. Tomorrow, the key will be to stay out of trouble in the tricky stage so I can hopefully secure the overall victory."

Why Your Bike is Made in Asia

Bill McGann’s book Why Your Bike Is Made in Asia: My career in bicycles as I watched two continents squander an industry is available in print, Kindle eBook & Audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the start city of Sittard at 2:00 PM, local time: 14C (58F), cloudy, with the wind from the northwest at 6 km/hr (4 mph). There is a 21% chance of rain, dropping to 1% at 4:00 PM.

The race: Stage 3 of the 2025 Tour of Holland was cancelled due to multiple vehicles entering the race route, disrupting the race and leading to rider protests. The cancellation occurred after riders were initially stopped by a car and, during a neutral period, a second car also entered the course, causing riders to refuse to continue. This happened because the race was being run without police support, with the race relying on volunteers to secure the route, which proved to be insufficient.

Epictetus' Golden Sayings

Stoic philosopher Epictetus' Golden Sayings is available in both audiobook & Kindle eBook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the race city of Etten-Leur at 2;25 PM, local time: 15C (59F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the north at 11 km/hr (7 mph). There is a 6% chance of rain. Early in the stage there was light rain falling on the riders.

The race: Niek Hoornsman (Metec-SOLARWATT-Mantel) was the first rider off at 1:30 PM.

Here's the report from stage winner and GC leader Ethan Hayter's Team Soudal Quick-Step:

Ethan Hayter returned in the Tour of Holland orange jersey after a flawless ride Thursday afternoon, when he finished at the top of the leaderboard in the second individual time trial of the race. Victorious in the Den Haag prologue two days ago, the 27-year-old was the penultimate rider to leave the start house in Etten-Leur, where the stage took place over a flat and fast course, which included just a couple of technical parts, especially in the second part.

The British Champion put in a flying ride that saw him record the fastest time at the intermediate checkpoint and set the early mark for success. In the final seven kilometers of the race, Hayter increased the tempo and blitzed the second half of the time trial, clocking a winning time of 16:56 thanks to an average speed of 52.42km/h.

This success will see Ethan start Friday’s hilly stage with a two-second buffer over his closest opponent in the overall standings of the Tour of Holland, where Soudal Quick-Step teammate Yves Lampaert sits in a strong sixth place after moving up three positions at the end of the ITT.

“The morning rain made it difficult, as the roads were still damp and had some leaves, making it a tricky one to judge, but I was able to do a solid time trial from start to finish, and I’m happy I could bring another one for the team. It’s for the fourth time in my career that I won two stages in a race and it feels nice, especially as it shows as confirmation of all the hard work I’ve put in this year. The next few days have some demanding climbs, but I want to enjoy being in the overall lead again and we’ll see what we can do in the general classification.”

“The team is having a fantastic final part of the season, winning here and also in China, so we can be proud of this. It’s incredible to get six victories this week and we hope to not stop here, as there should be a couple of more opportunities”, Ethan said after the race.

The Story of the Giro d’Italia, vol.1 Shade Vise sunglass holder Paris-Roubaix: The Inside Store

Wednesday, October 15: Stage 1, Dordrecht - Dordrecht, 118.5 km

Melanoma: It Started with a Freckle

David L. Stanley's masterful telling of his bout with skin cancer Melanoma: It Started with a Freckle is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the start/finish city of Dordrecht at 2:20 PM, local time: 14C (58F), cloudy, with the wind from the north at 6 km/hr (4 mph). There is a 6% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Tim Merlier's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Tim Merlier kept the team’s incredible winning streak going at the Tour of Holland, powering to victory on stage one after an immense sprint where he combined positioning, timing and speed. The Belgian, who raced clad in the Soudal Quick-Step jersey for the first time in more than a year now that his spell as European Champion concluded, came past his opponents in the last 150 meters of the day, blasting to the Wolfpack’s 50th victory of the year – the 11th time in the team’s history that we’ve hit this amazing milestone.

The exceptional season Tim has had is underlined also by the fact he won at least a race in all the months of the year – except for May, when he didn’t compete – a remarkable consistency for the soon-to-be 33-year-old and a testament to his determination. In Dordrecht, where Wednesday’s stage finished, Merlier showcased again his phenomenal speed after a flawless job of his teammates and claimed a win that put him in the points jersey, which he’ll wear during the individual time trial.

“I’m delighted I could bring Soudal Quick-Step’s 50th victory of the season! It’s an outstanding performance of the whole squad and it speaks a lot of our ambition and team spirit! We are having a great week, here and in China, and we want to keep the same motivation until Sunday. Today it wasn’t easy, quite hectic actually with all the road furniture, and the sprint was a hard one, but I managed to find the right timing and also had good legs to finish it off.”

“It’s my 16th success of the year, meaning that I have now matched my total number of last year, and this is something that gives me a lot of pride. We have a couple of more stages left here this week and we’ll see what else we can achieve”, said Tim, who became the first Belgian rider since Freddy Maertens in 1977 to take 16 victories in back-to-back seasons.

Weather at the race city of The Hague at 7:00 PM, local time: 13C (56F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the north at 18 km/hr (11 mph). There is a 3% chance of rain.

The race: First rider off was Stijn Daemen (VolkerWessels Cycling Team) at 7:00 PM local time.

Here's the report from winner Ethan Hayter's Team Soudal Quick-Step:

Soudal Quick-Step celebrated its second victory in the space of just twelve hours Tuesday evening. After Paul Magnier took the spoils on the opening stage of the Tour of Guangxi in the morning, Ethan Hayter added another success to our team’s tally, this time in Europe.

The British Champion, one of the last riders to roll down the ramp in Den Haag – where the Tour of Holland evening prologue took place – put in a flying ride on the 4km short and flat course to rack up his fourth win of the season, after the ones he picked up at the Tour of Belgium, Nationals, and Tour de Luxembourg. Hayter stopped the clock in 4:26 and finished first for the smallest of margins after averaging almost 54km/h, a success that moved him into the leader’s jersey.

“It’s really nice to take a victory just before the end of the season, and especially after missing out on a medal for less than a second at the European Championships. I feel that I’m back to my best in the time trials this year, and I have to thank the team for this, because they showed a lot of confidence in me and supported me with the best equipment.”

“It was an atypical time trial, held in the evening, and for that reason, it reminded me a bit of track racing. I didn’t take any risks out there, but at the same time, I made sure of going as fast as possible. The orange jersey that I will now wear is a nice bonus, because it’s always special to lead a stage race. We are here with a strong team and we hope to be in the mix for more stage victories”, said Ethan after scoring Soudal Quick-Step 48th victory of the season.
