Weather at Willunga Hill at 11:00 AM, local time: 21C (70F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the southeast at 26 km/hr (16 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the organizer's stage three report.

It wasn’t a fairy tale finish for Richie Porte, the king of Willunga Hill, but he managed to sign off in style in an emotional Saturday for the Tasmanian.

Angus Lyons from ARA Pro Racing Sunshine Coast won the uphill stage of the Santos Festival of Cycling’s grand finale after a McLaren Vale start.

Riding Willunga Hill for the last time as a professional cyclist, Porte still wowed the masses that turned up to farewell the legend after making his mark at the Tour Down Under as a rookie wildcard in 2008.

“This climb is one of the most iconic climbs in world cycling and looking to the future like (INEOS Grendadiers teammate) Luke Plapp, there’s some really good kids coming through and it’s exciting for cycling,’’ Porte who turns 37 on Sunday said.

“In this peloton, you know we could see the next Cadel Evans that is going to win the Tour de France, it’s been awesome to be a part of it. I think I’ll be back in one way or another with the kids and maybe drinking a Coopers Pale Ale at the bottom or the top of Willunga.

“I love Adelaide, my plan is to try and get to the race at some point and enjoy Adelaide for the city it is and not have all the pressure of a bike race.

“Stuart O’Grady (Santos Tour Down Under race director) and Brad McGee, they really helped me become professional with Saxobank back in the day. To have Stuey talking to me about my career is absolutely fantastic.

“This is the best organised race on the calendar bar none, the crowds are really fantastic and the ride up Willunga I enjoyed it for once.”

Porte ended the Festival of Cycling in 19th place overall. He is now focussing on the Giro D’Italia and Tirreno Adriatico and wants to win a bike race before ending his career, aiming for the Tour of Britain as his last WorldTour race this year.

Although Lyons took out the stage, Porte’s seven-time stage crown wasn’t challenged by UCI WorldTour teams for the second year running due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.

James Whelan became the new national road series champion at the Santos Festival of Cycling after BikeExchange-Jayco’s Luke Durbridge won the GC in 2021.

While Lyons team rode the perfect race which essentially was split in two as Team Bridgelane produced the stage winner.

Whelan had the leader’s jersey since stage 1 was completed. Despite being docked 60 seconds by the commissaires on Thursday, he still managed to keep his lead alongside teammate Matt Dinham in an incredible one, two finish for Bridgelane.

Jumbo-Visma’s Chris Harper, riding for Villawood, finished third overall and last year’s Santos Festival of Cycling champion Durbridge was fifth overall, 49 seconds behind Whelan.“I feel amazing, I was a little bit stressed, but now I’ve got the jersey,’’ Whelan said.

“Whether I race WorldTour or ProTour this year, I’m not too fussed. I have done everything I can do, and I have had a blast racing with Bridgelane, we get to Europe in April and hopefully we can keep winning bike races.”

With Whelan eager to re-join the UCI WorldTour ranks again, Lyons was ecstatic that his team did all the hard work in what was deemed an upset given Porte was the sentimental favourite to win after he claimed the stage in 2021.

Lyons finished the 2021 Willunga stage in seventh place. "We came close last year, with a similar sort of situation, just not as much gap on the bottom, so it was nice to finish it off," said Lyons, who took the win after his teammate Declan Trezise drove the break to the base of the Willunga climb.

"Declan rode an insane ride to keep us away there. He did an amazing job to get me there with three minutes up my sleeve."

Ben Hill won the Shimano King of the Mountain jersey to keep on what he deemed “a working holiday” tour.

Within minutes of being paraded on the podium, Hill was expected to drive back home to Canberra with his family, ready to start work on Monday.

Friday, January 28: Stage 2, Mount Lofty - Woodside, 112.9 km

Stage two map & profile

Blake Quick wins stage two.

Melanoma: It Started with a Freckle

David L. Stanley's book Melanoma: It Started with a Freckle is available as an audiobook narrated by the author here. For the print and Kindle eBook vesions, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Woodside at 1:00 PM, local time: 26C (78F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the southwest at 11 km/hr (7 mph). There is currently a 60% chance of rain, quickly changing to just 12% by 2:00 PM.

The race: Here's the organizer's stage two report:

Richie Porte will bid farewell to Willunga Hill as a professional cyclist, but the sentimental favourite has a battle to win the final stage of the Santos Festival of Cycling.

After Blake Quick won the Westpac stage 2 from Mount Lofty to Woodside –his fifth win from seven races this year which includes the under 23 national road title on Friday, all eyes on Saturday are on Porte.

Porte has won eight WorldTour stages at Willunga and Paracombe.

Race leader James Whelan said Porte’s farewell would be fitting for the legend. However Whelan was upset at race officials keen to claim the 2022 Festival of Cycling GC.

Team Bridgelane’s Whelan had 60 seconds docked from his incredible solo stage 1 win at Lobethal. It turned his unassailable lead into a potential stage fight to the end at Willunga.

“It’s super disappointing,’’ Whelan said after he was forced to change his bike near the start of stage 1. “The circumstances are pretty unethical, we have no right to appeal, the commissaire failed to recognise my mechanical problem when the race was in neutral in the first place.

“There is a national road series rule where you can only motor pace for 2km, and I was five minutes behind the peloton after neutral. Those rules seem to be quite inappropriate, it’s disappointing for me, the team, our sponsors and for the race itself.

“Everyone wants a fair race and I have lost a minute and I worked pretty hard to get a minute and a half (lead) up the road. Just for the commissaire to influence the race like that under these circumstances, it’s ridiculous, but there is nothing I can do I have to focus on the bike race.”

The former UCI WorldTour rider with ES Education-Nippo ended stage 2 by keeping out of trouble, ensuring realistic GC rivals weren’t going to trouble his lead.

Whelan is 25 seconds ahead of second-placed Ben Hill from CCS Cycling who kept the King of the Mountain jersey. And with Porte lurking in his competitive racing swansong in SA and his INEOS Grenadiers teammate Luke Plapp capable of shredding the race to pieces, Whelan won’t have an easy final stage.

“I’ve got the legs to do it and I have a really good team and there is no reason why I won’t be speaking to you (media) about the GC tomorrow (Saturday),’’ Whelan said.

Plapp was among the first to congratulate Quick who also won the Trek Night Riders Criterium on the streets of Adelaide on Wednesday night. “At the end of last year, I stayed in his (Plapp’s) place in Andorra,’’ Quick said.

“After I broke my collarbone, I wanted to make sure I was flying in January, and I put in a lot of work over there and I’m actually dating his sister. I have been living at their house (in Australia) since I got back.

“It’s good to show I’m not a one-trick pony and I’m strong as well as fast. I’m willing to race hard go long and take a risk."

As the main GC contenders kept every potential protagonist in check for most of the 112.9km stage, Benjamin Dyball, Dylan Sunderland and Carter Bettles raced from the front.

The trio traded three Ziptrak sprint intermediate sprints.

But it was Dyball (AUS II) who now wears the Ziptrak sprint jersey for the final stage ahead of Sunderland (Westpac) and Bettles (Ara Pro Racing Sunshine Coast).

Thursday, January 27: Men's Stage One. Stirling - Lobethal, 114.2 km

Stage one map & profile

James Whelan wins the first stage.

Tour de France: the Inside Story

Les Woodland's book Tour de France: The Inside Story - Making the World's Greatest Bicycle Race is available as an audiobook here. For the print and Kindle eBook versions, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Lobethal at 12:45 PM, local time: 33C (91F), sunny, with the wind from the west at 23 km/hr (14 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the organizer's stage one report:

James Whelan doesn’t believe it’s game over as he raced to an incredible overall lead on stage I of the Santos Festival of Cycling at Lobethal.

The stage victory is certain to attract the attention of WorldTour teams that are still on the hunt to fill their rosters with a super talent for 2022.

“I’d like to say a ride like this shows that I should still be in the WorldTour,’’ Whelan after having bike problems not far from the Stirling start. “I’m lucky that I have this summer of cycling to show my form and talent.

“It’s definitely not game over especially in the heat, I do have a big buffer now and history suggests that I’ll hold the jersey, but we have a lot of work to do. There are some fast bike riders here and hopefully at the end of the week we’ll sew up the jersey.”

Incredibly Whelan, 25, lost about five minutes when he was forced to change his bike early in the race before riding solo to the finish.

Whelan amassed a 27-second gap over Bridgelane teammate Matt Dinham. It also puts Dinham in the running for the GC by the time the race gets to the Willunga Hill finish line on Saturday for the final stage.

Reigning Festival of Cycling champion BikeExchange-Jayco’s Luke Durbridge was fifth, 32 seconds behind Whelan and Luke Plapp, one second behind the West Australian.

Whelan – a UCI WorldTour rider for EF Education-Nippo for four years – finished runner up to Plapp at the recent Australian road nationals.

Plapp was the danger according to the moves of the twitchy peloton, but Whelan threatened to solo to victory having a 50 second lead with just one more loop around Lobethal.

However, when the WorldTour guns needed to up the ante Whelan’s Bridgelane team rocked the favourites and at times the race threatened to explode in the 33C humid heat.

Plapp managed to chase down a two-minute gap from the lead group with about 19km to go before the favourites started positioning their best hopes of winning the stage.

But it was far too late.

It was no laughing matter said Ben Hill from CCS Cycling who earned five points and the KOM jersey to keep for stage 2 which starts at Mount Lofty and ends at Woodside on Friday. “By the time Whelan went solo there was already a select group with tired legs,’’ Hill said. “Bridgelane had a lot of numbers there, so if it wasn’t James (Whelan going for a stage win) it would have been one of his teammates.

“If you’re Luke Plapp or Chris Harper (Jumbo-Visma and Villawood in SA) or Luke Durbridge they should have been more attentive to Whelan than the other guys.

“He is the guy with pedigree and on form after the nationals, they should have been following him.”

The race started with a breakaway which was getting edgy just before the first Ziptrak intermediate sprint at Oakbank, 37.2km from the start.

Riding for Villawood, Adelaide-born Tim Roe, an ex-UCI WorldTour rider with BMC Racing, looked set to take it out but he was swamped by Jean-Pierre Van Der Merwe from Bridgelane and two other guns.

Full-time electrician Brendan Johnston earned second after his brilliant third place at the Australian national road championships in Victoria this month.

Brady Gilmore from Cycling Development Foundation was a happy third as the breakaway was about 10 minutes ahead of the scheduled 1.55pm finish at Lobethal.

The Shimano King of the Mountain came up quickly, but the Cudlee Creek category 3 climb was not bothering the early season legs despite Wednesday night’s Trek Night Riders criterium on the hot streets of Adelaide.

Johnston won all the major rewards for the second Ziptrak intermediate sprint at Lobethal before Whelan’s finish to hold onto the jersey for stage two.

Cycling's 50 Triumphs and Tragedies

Les Woodland's book Cycling's 50 Triumphs and Tragedies: The rise and fall of bicycle racing's champions is available as an audiobook here. For the print and Kindle eBook versions, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

The race: Here's the organizer's report:

Blake Quick is destined to stimulate the interest of UCI WorldTour teams in SA with an impressive victory in the Trek Night Riders criterium on the Adelaide street circuit.

Luke Plapp, who won a WorldTour contract on the back of his outstanding performances at the Santos Festival of Cycling in 2021, was among the first to congratulate his good friend Blake Quick.

Racing for InForm TMX Make, Quick, 21, celebrated his fourth win from five races this year among claiming the under 23 national road race.

“If you watched it, (the race) you’d know the way I won, my team, I’ve got everyone to thank especially my team,’’ Quick said. “It’s a team full of hitters they can win this on their own, they put it out for me and that’s why we win.

“I have obviously put in a lot of work this summer and the hard work pays off, it takes a lot of time. It’s not an easy sport, it’s extra special when it pays off.”

Jensen Plowright’s second place was under review from race officials after they scrutinised his lead up to the finish line on Flinders Street near Victoria Square

The Equipe Continentale Groupama-FDJ continental rider, who is on the Westpac team for the stage race in SA, was eventually awarded second place ahead of Cameron Scott in third for ARA Pro Racing Sunshine Coast.

However, Quick’s win was the perfect warm-up for the three-stage race which starts from Stirling before ending at Lobethal on Thursday.

The race was fast, furious and dangerous.

The peloton raced hard as dusk fell and they hoped for cooler conditions, but it remained a humid 32C

They broke the city streets 50 km/h speed limit consistently in a race where attack after attack failed to exhaust favourites.

Reigning national road champion Plapp, from INEOS Grenadiers but riding for Garmin-Australia when the stage race pedals off, kept shutting down attacks.

Carnage threatened to dismantle the criterium on lap seven when more than a handful of riders hit the tarmac on turn one of the street circuit near Victoria Square.

Another huge crash forced officials to neutralise the race when a rider crashed into the barriers before his bike flung dangerously high, towards the peloton.

The peloton was forced to a grinding halt as they cleared the tarmac on lap 16 to start the race again.

The race: Here's the organizer's report:

Georgia Baker claimed the Trek Night Riders women’s criterium as her team repaid the Tasmanian's superb work ethic during the Santos Festival of Cycling twilight race.

As Ruby Roseman-Gannon, the reigning Australian criterium champion was favoured to complete the women’s double at the Santos Festival of Cycling in 33C heat, she was part of a strong lead-out train to give Baker an intelligent victory on the Adelaide street circuit.

Tasmanian Baker, 27, is in her first season with BikeExchange-Jayco’s women’s WorldTour team.

“I’m so happy to have a win I haven’t had a win in such a while,’’ Baker said after her team’s clean sweep at the Festival of Cycling.

“Credit to my team, we had the perfect lead-out and we had some really good rehearsal days at the Santos Festival of Cycling, it was great to be able to nail it here and get another win for the team.

“Coming off COVID, I wasn’t sure how I would be on the bike, but it was a real pleasure to lead Ruby out over the last three days (in the stage race). I head overseas next week and head into the (spring) classics.”

SA favourite, ARA Pro Racing Sunshine Coast's Maeve Plouffe finished third after winning stage two of the road race on Monday.

Josie Talbot, from Sydney Uni Staminade, was runner up with Roseman-Gannon finishing fourth.

More than 24 hours after winning overall honours at the Festival of Cycling’s three-stage race at Lobethal, Roseman-Gannon, 22, was at the front of the peloton impressing her BikeExchange-Jayco team for signing her on a professional contract last year.

Rosman-Gannon was keeping a close eye on the threat of Georgie Howe from Knights of Suburbia as the game plan turned to protect Baker – a 2016 Brazil Games Olympian.

Baker also finished fourth overall in the Festival of Cycling’s stage race.

However, crashes marred the women’s criterium with Emily Watts, winner of stage one of the Festival of Cycling on Sunday, one of the casualties.

She got back on the bike for Knights of Suburbia to re-join the front of the peloton after claiming the overall Cervelo young rider’s jersey outright for the stage race.

Lauretta Hanson, from the Trek-Segafredo WorldTour team and riding for Westpac in SA, won the first intermediate sprint after a perfect attack ahead of BikeExchange-Jayco guest rider Amber Pate before the peloton again settled.

Team STEPFWD SOOMOM’S Belinda Bailey claimed the second intermediate sprint.

Stage three map & profile

Ruby Roseman-Gannon wins the final stage and the final GC.

Cycling's World Championships

Les Woodland's book Cycling's World Championships: The Inside Story is available as an audiobook here. For the print and Kindle eBook versions, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner and final GC winner Ruby Roseman-Gannon's Team BikeExchange-Jayco team.

Ruby Roseman-Gannon claimed the overall title in style at the Santos Festival of Cycling as she sprinted to victory on the third and final stage in Lobethal.

The 23-year-old finished off an impressive lead out by her Team BikeExchange-Jayco teammates to finally get her arms in the air after two tight second place finishes on the opening two stages.

Not content to sit back and defend her race lead, Roseman-Gannon went on the offensive on the stage as she briefly clipped off the front of the bunch with teammate Georgia Baker, after claiming the remaining one second time bonus at the first intermediate sprint.

A lone attacker then claimed the maximum bonus seconds at the next intermediate sprint, with Roseman-Gannon again picking up one second from the peloton behind. The race was eventually all back together on the final gravel sector as the pack prepared for the Ngangkiparri QOM inside the final five kilometres.

Roseman-Gannon displayed her strength once more as she crested the climb in second wheel before Team BikeExchange-Jayco amassed on the front of the peloton ahead of the upcoming sprint finish. There was no stopping the Australian criterium champion in the dash for the line as she powered to a convincing victory, securing the overall title in the process.

Ruby Roseman-Gannon:
"I think after the last two seconds I was pretty hungry, and my team every day, and especially today have been riding so, so well for me. There’s a lot of pressure when you have such a high calibre of riders riding for you, so I really felt the pressure today, I was really nervous, but I’m so glad I could finish it off, it’s a dream.

"It’s absolute relief, it’s joy and relief. Everyone in my team is so good and I feel like I should be riding for them, not them riding for me and just every day they’re smashing themselves for me, so it means so much to actually finish it off for them. I’m really, really happy I could do that."

Weather at the finish city of Echunga at 11:30 AM, local time: 24C (76F), cloudy, with the wind from the northeast at 16 km/hr (9 mph). There is a 95% chance of rain during the afternoon.

The race: Here's the report from GC leader Ruby Roseman Gannon's BikeExchange-Jayco team.

Race leader Ruby Roseman-Gannon extended her advantage in the general classification after sprinting to second place on stage two of the Santos Festival of Cycling.

Just like on stage one, Roseman-Gannon went after the bonus seconds on offer and the 23-year-old came out on top in the first intermediate sprint in a tight photo finish. The pace was relentless in the opening half of the stage with Team BikeExchange-Jayco working hard on the front of the bunch to control the race.

The stage then burst into life on the 2.8km long gravel sector as Roseman-Gannon followed a strong move from Australian champion Nicole Frain that saw seven riders edge away. However, the select group was soon shutdown and it was all back together again as the peloton returned to the paved roads.

Despite several attempts to escape from numerous riders, the race remained as one for the next intermediate sprint at 25km to go, with Roseman-Gannon extending her virtual race lead further as she took second place and two more bonus seconds.

The focus then switched to the stage finish with Amanda Spratt, Alex Manly and Amber Pate taking turns to close down the various attacks inside the final 10km. Georgia Baker was tasked with leading out Roseman-Gannon in the finale, but it was Maeve Plouffe who proved to be the fastest on as she sprinted to victory.

With the bonus seconds collected throughout the day, Roseman-Gannon now leads Plouffe by eight seconds in the general classification heading into tomorrow's third and final stage

Ruby Roseman-Gannon:
"Not the perfect day, but still a good day. I’m here to win the race and I wanted to win today, but just didn’t have the legs and Maeve was very strong today. I can’t thank my teammates enough, I think the other teams really put it up to us in the final and sent people up the road and made us chase, which meant we didn’t have the perfect lead in. But my teammates destroyed themselves to make sure Grace’s move came back, so I can’t thank them enough.

"I think she (Plouffe) is definitely somebody we’re going to watch, I think I still have a bit of a lead on her going into that [stage three] and I’m excited to give it everything I’ve got and I’m keen to go up for the win tomorrow.

"We’ve got two Olympians, Spratty and Amber Pate who came second at the nationals TT, so I think we’ve got one of the best teams and a great bunch of girls and I have absolute trust in them that we can pull it off, so I’m going to give it everything I have and I just want to do them proud because they work so hard for me."

Sunday, January 23: Women's Stage 1, Tanunda - Williamstown, 85.4 km

Stage one map & profile

Emily Watts wins the first stage.

Dirty Feet: Early days of the Tour de France

Les Woodland's book Dirty Feet: How the Great Unwashed Created the Tour de France is available as an audiobook here. For the print and Kindle eBook versions, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Williamstown at 11:30 AM, local time: 21C (69F), rain, continuing through the afternoon, declining to a 50% chance of rain at 3:30 PM. Wind is from the northeast at 24 km/hr (15 mph). Riders are crashing on the slippery roads.

The race: Here's the race organizer's report:

Carnage threatened to ruin the opening stage of the 2022 women’s Santos Festival of Cycling as several riders crashed before order was restored at the finish line on Sunday.

Knights of Suburbia’s Emily Watts claimed the rain sodden stage and her teammate, former rower Georgie Howe earned the Queen of the Mountain jersey.

Rachel Neylan on debut for new women’s UCI team Cofidis but riding for Westpac in SA was rushed to hospital after a nasty crash.

Neylan was involved in the early race incident which involved overall leader Ruby Rosemary-Gannon and three-time Santos Tour Down Under champion Amanda Spratt.

It was Spratt’s first race since serious leg surgery last October.

“I was lined up behind Spratty (Spratt) and Rachel Neylan’s wheels and unfortunately there was a rider in front that crashed, and they went down too, I was on top of them,’’ Rosemary-Gannon said.

“I didn’t want to hurt them; I was OK and Spratty had to have a bike change.”

Rosemary-Gannon became the overall leader after earning maximum bonuses in the intermediate sprints.

Another hefty time bonus came her way when she finished second behind stage winner Watts at Williamstown.

She has a two second lead over Watts before stage 2 pedals off from Penny’s Hill Wines from McLaren Vale to Echunga where rain and wind could influence the race on Monday.

“I like the rain and I like the wind; we’re excited we’ve got a really strong team and I’ll do everything that I can and go for that stage win,’’ Rosemary-Gannon said.

Watts, last year’s under 23 national road and time trial champion, was ecstatic with the stage win.

She claimed it was her biggest career win after the 2021 nationals with her team executing a perfect game plan after a series of crashes marred the race.

“There were a few nervous riders since the nationals (titles last week),’’ Watts said. “The rain added to a little bit of scary riding out there. Our team played our cards right, with good positioning, staying together and staying safe.

“We had a race plan releasing Georgie Howe up the line (near the finish) that’s how she got the QOM (Queen of the Mountain jersey) and we came together which wasn’t the plan.

“We wanted Georgie to go to the line. I’m not a sprinter so I didn’t get any (bonus) points but I’m also happy with the young rider’s jersey and it’s been a goal to get a national road series win here.”

The peloton signed on at the picturesque Chateau Tanunda before pedalling off on rain swept cobbles which wouldn’t have been out of place during the Roman Empire before the Ziptrak stage 1 tested bike handling skills.

SA Sports Institute’s Katarina Chung-Orr was the first rider forced to abandon the race after a crash.

The peloton looked settled just before Roseman-Gannon picked up a three second bonus for claiming the first intermediate sprint ahead of teammate Georgia Baker and Hayley Jones from Giant Racing.

And in what is understood to be a first for a major bike race in Australia, 2010 national road champion Ruth Corset, 44, and daughter Caitlin Corset, 17, were teammates for VA Pro Racing.
