Olav Kooij wins the final stage.

Roman philosopher Seneca’s Letter to his Friend Lucilius and an Essay Addressed to Emperor Nero is available in both audiobook & Kindle eBook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Cardiff at 1:20 PM, local time: 18C (64F), showers in the vicinity, with the wind from the southeast at 14 km/hr (9 mph). The rain is forecast to end about 2:45 PM. About halfway into the stage rain began falling on the riders.

The stage: The final stage of the 2025 Lloyds Tour of Britain Men on Sunday 7 September will start in Newport, outside the Geraint Thomas Velodrome, and finish in Cardiff.

The second of two days of action-packed racing on the climbs and valleys of south Wales, stage six will loop from the city of Newport to a finish on North Road in Cardiff, close to city hall in the Welsh capital.

It marks the first visit for the Lloyds Tour of Britain Men to Cardiff since 2017, and only the second time in the modern race’s history that the city has hosted the event’s overall finish.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Olav Kooij's Team Visma | Lease a Bike.

Olav Kooij has won the final stage of the Tour of Britain. After the Dutch rider of Team Visma | Lease a Bike had already proven the fastest in stages one and two of the British stage race, he sprinted to victory again on the final day in the streets of Cardiff.

“It’s fantastic to be able to finish this week in such a way,” Kooij said afterwards. “The first three days were already very special. That gave us a lot of confidence. Today we made sure, as a team, to end this Tour of Britain in the best possible way.”

The 2025 edition of the race turned into a real success story for Team Visma | Lease a Bike. With Kooij’s three stage wins and Matthew Brennan’s victory in stage three, the Dutch team ended up with four triumphs after Kooij’s final-day success.

After another strong lead-out from Brennan, Kooij caught three escapees just before the line in Cardiff. “We left it up to the GC riders to close the gap today. They still had something to fight for on the road,” Kooij explained. “In the finale, we put everything on the stage win as a team. It was just enough. It really came down to the wire, but I’m happy we managed to finish off all the hard work of the team like this.”

For Kooij, the victory in Cardiff marked his tenth win of the season. With that, the Dutchman has played a major role in Team Visma | Lease a Bike’s 36 wins so far this year.

Weather at Tumble, Wales, at 1:50 PM, local time: 20C (68F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the southeast at 31 km/hr (19 mph). No rain is forecast.

The stage: The penultimate stage of the Lloyds Tour of Britain Men on Saturday 6 September will be the first of two days of action-packed racing in south Wales, as Pontypool and The Tumble welcome Britain’s biggest professional cycle race.

The Lloyds Tour of Britain Men makes its first visit to Pontypool in the Torfaen district for the stage start, with a route through Monmouthshire that will finish with a double ascent of the famous climb of The Tumble, above Abergavenney.

Last used by the race in 2014, The Tumble is one of the most notorious in south Wales, averaging over 8% across its five kilometers.

The race: Luke Lamperti (Soudal Quick-Step) did not start.

Here's the report from stage winner Remco Evenepoel's Team Soudal Quick-Step:

Remco Evenepoel scored his 59th victory in the Soudal Quick-Step on the penultimate day of the Tour of Britain, moving up to second place on the general classification, just a few seconds from the green jersey. The Olympic Champion was part of a large group that arrived together inside 500 meters to go and patiently waited for the last 150 meters to launch an acceleration that ended up securing his sixth win of the season.

The 133km stage had five classified climbs on the agenda, including a double ascent of The Tumble, the 5.5km hill averaging a stinging 8.8% where the GC fight unfolded. A breakaway animated the first part of the stage, but was reabsorbed with 40 kilometers to go. Seconds later, another group went clear, but this too was brought back by the time they took on the final climb. There, a couple of riders briefly snapped the elastic and opened a five-second gap, but thanks to a solid effort of Ilan Van Wilder, they were reeled in ahead of the flamme rouge, paving the way for Remco’s success.

“It’s a win that makes me happy, especially as it wasn’t easy today. The first time up the climb, we wanted to see how it went. We went quite fast, but then, in the last three kilometers, the wind was blowing quite hard in the face, and I quickly realised that we had to wait for the sprint. It was going to be quite difficult to get away, as you could see.”

“Ilan did a great job bringing the late attackers back, and then it was up to me to have a sprint. I know after a tough day and a hard climb, that I still have a good sprint, so I just focused on my sprint, tried it and went out with the win, so it’s good. We are delighted with this outcome and on Sunday we’ll try to see if we can win the general classification”, Remco explained after the podium ceremony, where he celebrated Soudal Quick-Step’s 29th victory at the Tour of Britain.

Weather at the city of Burton Dassett at 1:20 PM, local time: 19C (67F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 14 km/hr (9 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the race report from stage winner Romain Grégoire's Team Groupama-FDJ.

Romain Grégoire was very much looking forward to this first test. So, after champing at the bit for three days, the young Frenchman didn’t miss his chance. On stage 4 of the Tour of Britain, he displayed his power and punch to claim a dominant victory at the top of Burton Dassett’s climb. Thanks to a two-second gap over most of his competitors, he also took command of the general classification. On Saturday, he will have to defend his leader’s jersey in an even harder summit finish.

Things were about to get serious this Friday on British soil. After three stages made for sprinters, the first hills were on the agenda on day 4, with 187 kilometres to cover towards Burton Dassett. “The day’s finish suited Romain’s qualities perfectly,” explained Jérôme Gannat. “There was a short 12.5-kilometre circuit to be completed twice in the final, with three ascents of the finishing climb, which wasn’t easy: 900 metres at 7-8% on a very narrow road. We kept a low profile at the start of the race to try to keep as many riders as possible in the final to position Romain for the climbs. It was also a positioning race.”

The peloton initially had no trouble controlling a four-man breakaway, whose maximum lead was five minutes before dropping below the two-minute mark entering the final fifty kilometres. Shortly after, the peloton hit the first climb of the day, then the riders entered the circuit. The first ascent of Burton Dassett’s hill was done straight after, and Remco Evenepoel started the attacks. “We rather expected action on the penultimate lap, but the four guys who broke away didn’t gain more than ten seconds,” Jérôme said. “We also knew that there would be teams to chase behind, and Lorenzo also did a few pulls to catch the breakaway.”

Nevertheless, a ten-kilometre chase was necessary to make it all come back together. “We approached the race in the right way, and the guys did a great job all day to position me,” Romain confirmed. “On the finishing circuit, it wasn’t easy because some guys wanted to open the race from far and make it hard, like Remco. We managed it pretty well by staying patient and making the effort when necessary. All the guys did their part, but a special mention goes to Olivier Le Gac, who rode a fantastic race. He was there all the time and was really perfect in terms of positioning”.

The French puncher was indeed ideally positioned for the second and penultimate ascent of the Burton Dassett hill. He was able to follow a few accelerations but didn’t push it when a few attackers tried to go away in the final ten kilometres. Still quite big, the peloton got organized to bring everyone back four kilometres from the finish line. “Then the goal was to be in a good position at the last corner, one kilometre from the finish,” added Jérôme. “Quentin and Lorenzo worked well to achieve this.”

When his teammates finished their job, Romain Grégoire took his responsibilities. “I played my cards fully and positioned myself ideally one kilometre from the finish line,” he said. “He got on the Soudal-Quick Step’s train and was smart not to follow Evenepoel, but rather a rider he knows well: Sam [Watson],” Jérôme said. “He went hard from the bottom and that put Romain in a good position.” At the front with 500 metres to go, the French puncher then perfectly controlled the situation. “When Romain is in this kind of finish, when he knows he can win, he doesn’t make mistakes,” said Jérôme. “He took the right wheels and we felt that he was confident and calm. He was patient, because we said in the briefing that he should launch the sprint before the last corner, since the last 200 metres were less difficult, at 4%.”

That’s exactly what the young man did, starting his effort at around 250 metres, taking the lead immediately and keeping it until the end. “When I felt it was the moment, I went for it, and it held until the line,” he said. Ahead of Julian Alaphilippe, the Groupama-FDJ rider could celebrate a proper strong victory. “It’s really great,” he said. “It was a big objective to win here. The whole team did an incredible job and deserved this victory. I’m really happy. We have the leader’s jersey as a bonus, so we couldn’t have hoped for much better!”

While his fellow countryman finished with the same time, the other competitors crossed the line two seconds behind, and Romain Grégoire took the overall lead ahead of Matthew Brennan. A perfect day. “Originally, La Conti was supposed to ride this race,” Jérôme recalled. “We finally decided to come with the WorldTour team, but almost all the staff are from La Conti. It’s also important for them to be with riders like Romain and fight for the win in great races like the Tour of Britain.”

On Saturday, the entire Groupama-FDJ cycling team will try to maintain this strong momentum heading towards The Tumble (5.5 km at 7.3%). “This is practically their Alpe d’Huez,” Jérôme smiled. “It’s a climb that could suit Romain’s abilities. We have a team with experienced riders like Olivier and Quentin to support him, and it will be another challenge for us.” “I’m ready to fight,” said Romain. “Anyway, when you have a leader’s jersey on your shoulders, you have an obligation to battle for it”.

Editor's note. Famed race photographer John Pierce sent me this picture of Tim Torn Teutenberg (sixth in today's stage) training for the Tour of Britain.

It's actually of Teutenberg at the 2006 Stuttgart Six-Day.

Matthew Brennan wins stage three.Story of the Giro d'Italia volume 2

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Giro d'Italia, A Year-by-Year History of the Tour of Italy, Vol 2: 1971 - 2011 is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Ampthill at 2:15 PM, locla time: 17C (64F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the southwest at 24 km/hr (15 mph). There is a 50% chance of rain, declining to 6% at 4:00 PM.

The race: Here's the report from stager winner Matthew Brennan's Team Visma | Lease a Bike.

Matthew Brennan powered to victory in the third stage of the Tour of Britain on Thursday. Following back-to-back wins from overall leader Olav Kooij, it marked the third successive triumph for Team Visma | Lease a Bike on British soil.

“This is amazing. It’s already been a fantastic season so far, and to keep winning these past weeks is really special”, Brennan says afterwards. With his twelfth professional win of the year, the Brit lifts the team’s season tally to 35 victories.

Like the opening two stages, the third stage’s profile was tailor-made for a bunch sprint. The Dutch cycling team kept a firm grip on the peloton throughout. Once the breakaway had been reeled in, all eyes turned to the duo of Kooij and Brennan. After taking the first two stages in the United Kingdom, Kooij led-out his teammate perfectly to the line. The 20-year-old Brennan finished the job in sensational style, becoming the youngest stage winner ever at the Tour of Britain.

“It was a hectic finale today, with lots of riders fighting for position. We managed to move up with our train at just the right time. I was in Olav’s wheel, and he dropped me off perfectly at the line. It’s an incredible win”, Brennan says. “I’m really grateful to the team for giving me this opportunity to go for a stage win in my home country, especially with a leader like Olav in our team.”

Sports director Marc Reef is proud: “It’s really impressive to capitalise on the first three opportunities in this race. Of course, we know we have two strong sprinters with Olav and Matthew. It’s great to see all the hard work from the team being rewarded like this.”

The fourth stage on Friday brings a tough finale, with more climbing to come later in the weekend. “We knew the opening three days would present us good opportunities for stage wins, and we’ve made the most of them. The rest of the week will be harder. Tomorrow’s finish will be more of a punchy one, so we’ll make another plan for that”, overall leader Kooij concludes.

Weather at the start/finish city of Stowmarket at 1:30 PM, local time: 21C (69F), showers in the vicinity, with the wind from the south-southwest at 32 km/hr (20 mph). Rainstorms are forecast to continue through 4:00 PM. There could be heavy & torrential downpours at times.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Olav Kooij's Team Visma | Lease a Bike.

Olav Kooij claimed the second stage of the Tour of Britain in commanding style. Yesterday, the sprinter of Team Visma | Lease a Bike had already won the opening stage. Kooij will once again start in the green leader’s jersey tomorrow.

“It’s really special to win the second stage here too”, Kooij says afterwards. It marked the ninth victory of the season for the 23-year-old sprinter. “The team had to put in a lot of work throughout the day, and this win is the reward. A fantastic start to the week for us.”

As expected, all eyes were once more on the fast men ahead of the second stage. On a mostly flat route, starting and finishing in Stowmarket, four riders broke away early. Team Visma | Lease a Bike kept the race under control on the rain-soaked roads of southeast England and caught up the escapees with only a few kilometers remaining.

While Kooij benefited from a flawless lead-out yesterday, the yellow-and-black formation lost each other slightly in today’s finale. The Dutchman found his own way and powered to his second consecutive win. It was already the sixth time in his career that he raised his arms in triumph at the Tour of Britain. “It seems like this race suits me well.”

“Compared to yesterday, we had to work harder with more riders to bring back the breakaway. In the finale, we had fewer teammates left, but I was well-positioned with Matthew. At the very end I lost him, picked my own line, and jumped onto the right wheel. When I saw enough space ahead of me, I decided to go all-in. Straight away I felt I was the fastest”, Kooij explains.

His victory lifts Team Visma | Lease a Bike’s season tally to 34 wins. Tomorrow, the team faces a similar stage in England, where all eyes will once again be on the fastest men in the peloton.

Weather at the finish city of Southwold at 1:10 PM, local time: 21C (69F), showers in vicinity (riders did get rained on mid-way into the stage) with the wind from the south at 26 km/hr (16 mph). Rain is forecast to end around 2:00 PM.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Olaav Kooij's Team Visma | Lease a Bike.

Olav Kooij has won the opening stage of the Tour of Britain. The Dutch sprinter of Team Visma | Lease a Bike proved the fastest in the streets of Southwold, claiming victory in the bunch sprint. With his win, Kooij also took the first leader’s jersey of the race.

“I’m happy to start this stage race straight away with a win”, said Kooij after the finish. “Given my results here in 2023, I already had warm feelings about this race, and they’ve only grown stronger now.”

Team Visma | Lease a Bike lined up with a strong mix of experience and youthful talent for this six-stage event. With riders such as Kooij and Matthew Brennan, the team has set its sights on stage victories on British soil.

They made a successful start today. Kooij waited patiently in the final few hundred metres and pipped his rivals right on the line. With that, the Dutchman claimed his eighth victory of the season — bringing Team Visma | Lease a Bike’s total tally to 33 wins so far.

Kooij analysed his triumph: “There was a lot of wind in the final and the road also kicked uphill. We knew we had to be well positioned going into the last corner. After that it was all about patience. My teammates did a really good job. In the last few hundred metres I managed to find the right wheel. With the strong headwind it wasn’t easy, but luckily I had the legs to finish it off.”

“We’ll take it day by day”, the 23-year-old sprinter added on the team’s approach. “With Matthew we also have another rider with a strong finish. Our goal is to win stages. Today we’ve already made a very good start.”
