Saturday, April 26: Stage 3, Castropol - Vegadeo, 165.5 km

Alessandro Covi (center, UAE Team Emirates) wins stage three.
Les Woodland's book Tour of Flanders: The Inside Story - The rocky roads of the Ronde van Vlaanderen is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.
Weather at the finish city of Vegadeo at 2:20 PM, local time: 18C (65F), fair, with the wind from the noth-northwest at 11 km/hr (7 mph). There is just a 2% chance of rain.
The race: Here's the report from stage winner Alessandro Covi's UAE Team Emirates-XRG.
After a pair of runner-up spots in the opening two stages, UAE Team Emirates-XRG came up trumps on stage 3 of the Vuelta Asturias, with Alessandro Covi sprinting to the day’s victory from the peloton.

The start line.
For the man known as the Puma, it is a second victory in as many months, after his return to winning ways at the Giro d’Abruzzo. The Italian was the quickest in the pack after they caught the day’s breakaway.
Also in the peloton was UAE Team Emirates-XRG’s Marc Soler, who retains the race lead heading into the fourth and final day. The Spaniard has a handy advantage over second place, which allowed his teammates freedom to attack on Saturday afternoon.
Before Covi sprinted to the stage win, his teammate António Morgado had spent the day in the breakaway, with the multi-man group threatening to contest the stage honours at one point.

Early in the stage.
However, through the closing kilometres, the peloton was whipped into shape and ensured that the day would be decided in a sprint from the bunch. Sending his chance, Covi was manoeuvred to the front by his teammates, and the 26-year-old roared to victory in Vegadeo.
Speaking after the stage, the Italian described the winning moments from stage 3.
Covi: “Morgado went in the breakaway, which was the plan so he could go for a result. That left the other teams to chase from the peloton. They got together and closed the gap to the six riders.
“Once they were caught, Soler did a huge effort to launch me in the sprint . He did 600 metres full gas and placed me perfectly on the wheel of Cortina who was the fast rider of the group.
“I was able to come around him in the end and take the win. I risked it a little putting my hands up on the line but I managed to hang on and I’m delighted.”

Weather at the finish city of La Pola at 2:10 PM, local time: 18C (64F), showers in the vicinity, with the wind from the north at 10 km/hr (6 mph). There is a 72% chance of rain during the afternoon.
The race: Here's the report from GC leader Marc Soler's UAE Team Emirates-XRG:
In a repeat of the opening day’s results, UAE Team Emirates-XRG finished second and third on stage 2 of the Vuelta Asturias. Only, this time, the reward was all the sweeter, with third-placed Marc Soler leaving the rest of the peloton behind and riding into the race leader’s jersey.
With Soler the best of the peloton, the day’s stage was decided between the two final survivors of the breakaway, Soler’s teammate Julius Johansen and Movistar’s Iván García Cortina.
The pair went hammer and tongue through the final 20 kilometres, but ultimately came through the flamme rouge together, before Cortina got the better of the Dane in the sprint to the line. Taking second place, Johansen secured his best result since signing for UAE Team Emirates-XRG over the winter.
Behind Soler on the stage, his teammates António Morgado and Adrià Pericas finished sixth and seventh, respectively, with the latter moving up to fourth place overall heading into Saturday.
Earlier in the day, UAE Team Emirates-XRG had shifted their game plan from the opening day, with the ever-reliable Johansen given the green light to enter the breakaway. Using his power and tenacity to secure his spot, the 25-year-old found himself joined out front by Cortina, Jan Sommer (MYVELO Pro Cycling, Iker Gomez (Equipo Finisher-Kern Pharma) and Jakob Schmidt (MYVELO Pro Cycling).
Working in unison, the break developed a handy advantage and despite their partnership breaking down as the strongest riders emerged, their gap was such that the peloton never looked likely to contest the stage honours.
With Johansen marking Cortina out front, Soler got to work at attacking the race lead of Steff Cras (Team TotalEnergies) behind. Sadly, though, the contest never kicked into life, with the Belgian rider crashing out of the race and placing Soler into the provisional lead out on the road.
In Cras’ absence, Soler’s eyes turned to distancing the rest of his rivals, with UAE Team Emirates-XRG going on the offensive as a unit. At one point, Morgado, Soler and Pericas all distanced the rest of the peloton on the steep slopes of the Alto de la Colladiella, before Soler made his march alone. Taking an advantage over the top of the category 1 climb, the 31-year-old pressed on and only stretched his gap on the descent.
With Soler’s strength apparent, Pericas and Morgado continued to mark the moves behind as Johansen engaged in a to-and-fro contest with Cortina out front.
In the final 20km, both Johansen and Cortina attempted to shake free of one another, but no solo attack made it stick before the finish in Pola de Lena. As such, it all came down to a two-up sprint, with Soler crossing the line 41 seconds back.
The Spaniard now takes a lead of 1:51 heading into stage 3, with UAE Team Emirates-XRG also holding the points jersey (through Soler) and the lead of the teams classification. Looking ahead to the final two stages, the task ahead is now to retain the race lead through to the end.
Soler: “A break of six went from the beginning with Johansen in there for us. A few teams started chasing hard and on the descent of the first climb and it started raining hard which complicated the race. There were several splits in the bunch and on the Cat.1 climb I went away solo.
“Julius was in the front covering Cortina and I was behind. He managed a good second place and I was third and took the leaders jersey . Steff Crass crashed on one of the wet descents which was a pity as it’s not the way you want to inherit a race lead. I wish him a speedy recovery.
“The goal now will be to keep the lead and try with Morgado and Covi tomorrow for the stage.”

The race: Here's the report from second-place Marc Soler's UAE Team Emirates-XRG.
Marc Soler and Alessandro Covi made a strong start to the Vuelta Asturias for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, finishing second and third, respectively, on stage 1. Soler was unlucky not to come away with the stage victory, with the Spaniard narrowly out-sprinted by Steff Cras (Team TotalEnergies) in a two-up dash to the line in Llanes.
Over a minute behind the pair, Covi led the next-best group over the finish, with the Italian producing a fine bike throw to pip Sergio Geovani Chumil (Burgos Burpellet BH) into third place. Heading into stage 2, Soler now sits just four seconds off the race lead, with UAE Team Emirates-XRG leading the team classification.
Earlier in the day, UAE Team Emirates-XRG had controlled the early hours of racing through Julius Johansen and Gen Z talent, Abdulla Jasim Al-Ali. Their work on the front of the peloton was efficient, bringing the breakaway under control as the race hit the toughest climb of the day, the Alto del Fitu. Standing at 8% for 7km, the Fitu brought the first action of this year’s Vuelta Asturias between the general classification rivals.
Cras was the first to make an attack, with the Belgian soon followed by Soler and a handful of the peloton’s strongest climbers. For UAE Team Emirates-XRG, António Morgado was never far from the action, and as the pack summited the climb, a group of eight riders had coalesced at the front of the race.
The action lulled through the next 40km, before the day’s final categorised climb appeared in the form of the Alto de la Tornería. It was Cras and Soler who escaped the pack in advance of the climb, and with the climb extending for 6.1km at 5.7%, the pair only extended their advantage with each passing kilometre. Their advantage was such that they could descend to the finish line and engage in a two-up sprint for the day’s honours, leaving Covi and teammate Adrià Pericas to battle for position behind.
At the finish in Llanes, Cras held off Soler in the sprint, with the TotalEnergies rider taking the lead of the race heading into Friday’s stage. A little over a minute later, Covi burst into third place and Pericas rounded out a good day for the team in 11th place.
Soler: “The team did a good job to control the early break for a lot of the stage and on the hard climb of the Fitu, Cras attacked and we formed a group of eight riders. There was a bit of a lull before the final climb and myself and Cras jumped away and built up a good gap which we kept to the line.
“He was quicker than me in the sprint but we arrived at the same time and have a decent gap on the others in the GC so it’s a promising start to the week.”
