Weather at the finish town of Loulé at 1:10 PM, local time: 21C (69F), sunny, with the wind from the east-southeast at 16 km/hr (11 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage five report.

Juan Ayuso won the 52nd edition of the Volta ao Algarve cycling race, which ended this Sunday in thrilling fashion with the iconic climb to Alto do Malhão. Making his debut for Lidl-Trek, after leaving UAE Team Emirates XRG, the Spanish rider donned the Yellow Jersey – Turismo do Algarve on the second stage, at Alto da Foia, and never let it go. More than that, he will take it home.

Ayuso had already raced once on Portuguese soil, in the cadet category – in 2017, he lost the Volta a Portugal in the cadet category on the last day – and made no secret of the fact that he wanted a different story this time. He got it, and he worked for it.

Right from the start, he took advantage of an intermediate sprint at kilometer seven of the stage, in Olhão, to gain a bonus second and send a message to the competition.

Unlike on other days of the race, the breakaway took a while to form, but when it did, it was a strong one, with five high-quality names: Maximilian Schachmann (Soudal Quick-Step), Jan Tratnik (Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe), Tobias Bayer (Alpecin-Premier Tech), Luca Van Boven (Lotto-Intermarché), and Julian Alaphilippe (Tudor Pro Cycling Team).

The breakaway group consolidated its advantage over the peloton, reaching a lead of more than two minutes, which made Schachmann the virtual leader of the General Classification for many kilometers.

Then came the first mountain climbs of the day, in Soidos and Malhão, and the race broke apart. Schachmann and Alaphilippe were left alone at the front, the first eventually fell and it was the Frenchman who was left alone in the lead, winning the Combativity Award – Água Monchique.

Further back, João Almeida also decided to shake things up in the afternoon: a strong attack on the first climb of the day to Malhão split the peloton and left the group of favorites greatly reduced.

The group regrouped, but the damage was already done. Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull – BORA – Hansgrohe) and Kévin Vauquelin (INEOS Grandiers) also attacked, passed Alaphilippe, and entered the last climb of the day to Malhão in the lead.

However, there were more riders with strong ambitions behind them: João Almeida attacked again and broke away from the group once more, but was unable to shake off Ayuso and Paul Seixas (Decathlon CMA CGM Team), second in the general classification, as well as Oscar Onley (INEOS Grenadiers), Matthew Riccitello (Decathlon CMA CGM Team), and Thomas Gloag (Pinarello-Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team).

Riccitello tried to help Seixas, Onley also proved strong, but nothing on this sunny afternoon in Malhão could stop Juan Ayuso: the Spaniard wanted redemption in Portugal and got it, after a week in which he was stronger than the competition. The Yellow Jersey – Turismo do Algarve is his, as is the stage victory.

“I am very happy to have achieved this victory in my first race with Lidl-Trek. The opponents made the race very difficult, but the team responded well. I am very proud to belong to this team and to be able to offer the team to my colleagues”, said Ayuso, before praising the Algarve.

“It was a pleasure to race in Portugal, I really enjoyed the race, the reception was very good. I am very happy to have started my season here.”

Paul Seixas tried hard, but the 19-year-old prodigy leaves Portugal in second place in the General Classification. However, he wins the White Jersey – IPDJ, for youth. João Almeida was third overall.

In the points classification, Paul Magnier (Soudal Quick-Step) takes the Green Jersey – Crédito Agrícola, while in the mountains, it was Tomás Contte (Aviludo – Louletano – Loulé) who closed the Blue Jersey – Save Water.

The curtain falls on the 52nd edition of the Volta ao Algarve cycling race. After Jonas Vingegaard’s triumph a year ago, another big name in world cycling joins the Algarve’s hall of fame: on a day of celebration in Malhão, it was Juan Ayuso who came out on top.

Weather at the finish city of Lagos at 1:05 PM, local time: 19C (66F), sunny, with the wind from the east-southeast at 14 km/hr (9 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage four report.

From Albufeira to Lagos, the 52nd edition of the Volta ao Algarve saw its second sprint finish of the week on Saturday, with the same outcome as the first. Paul Magnier was the fastest rider of the afternoon and claimed his second victory of the week.

In four days of racing, three were won by a rider named Paul: Magnier won both sprints and Seixas celebrated in Foia. Only Filippo Ganna (INEOS Grenadiers) was able to interrupt the dominance of the French duo.

As on previous days, it didn’t take long for the breakaway to form, with nine riders, again all from Portuguese teams. It was from this group that the winner of the day’s first intermediate sprint in Lagoa emerged, with Hugo Nunes of Credibom / LA Alumínios standing out.

Further ahead, the only kom, a third category climb in Nave, also took place. Tomás Contte (Aviludo-Louletano-Loulé) took advantage of this to strengthen the lead of the Blue Jersey – Save Water, on a day when Gonçalo Carvalho (Tavfer-Ovos Matinados-Mortágua) was the most voted rider for the Combativity Award – Água Monchique.

Shortly afterwards, the front group split up, with three riders attacking, but the attempt did not last long. It was once again with the larger group that the hot spot of Alzejur was passed, with two bonus sprints in the space of about one kilometer. Rubén Fernández (Anicolor/Campicarn) was the fastest in the first sprint, Hugo Nunes in the second.

The peloton toughened up the race, putting pressure on the breakaway group, and by the first pass through the finish line, only three riders remained in the breakaway. Of that trio, Hugo Nunes offered the most resistance, but he was eventually caught about 25 kilometers from the finish.

From then on, the race remained tight until the very last meter. As the finish line approached, the different groups began to move, but in the end, as in Tavira, it was Soudal Quick-Step that came out on top, with Paul Magnier winning twice in the Algarvia. Jordi Meeus (Red Bull – BORA – Hansgrohe) came second, Oded Kogut (NSN Cycling Team) third.

The Frenchman arrived in Portugal as one of the big favorites to be the fastest man in the Volta ao Algarve, alongside Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Premier Tech), and he lived up to expectations.

“It’s a great feeling again. I felt good. It was tough at the end, but the team did an excellent job and I’m very happy with the victory”, said Magnier.

This Sunday is decision day in the Algarve, with the iconic climb to Alto do Malhão. The fifth stage starts in Faro, where the Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports, Margarida Balseiro Lopes, and the Secretary of State for Sports, Pedro Dias, will be in attendance.

For the decisive stage, Juan Ayuso will start as the Yellow Jersey – Turismo do Algarve. Paul Seixas is the owner of the White Jersey – IPDJ, for youth, and in terms of points, it is now Paul Magnier who will wear the Green Jersey – Crédito Agrícola.

“I’m happy to have made it through today and hope we’ll be fine tomorrow. It will be a day like Foia, with a lot of tension, a lot of bonus seconds at stake, and everything counts. We’ll have to fight. I’m fine, the team is fine, and I believe we can try to win the race”, Ayuso said.

Weather at the race city of Vilamoura at 1:25 PM, local time: 18C (65F), sunny, with the wind from the northeast at 10 km/hr (6 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Francisco Pereira (Feirense-Beeceler), last in the GC, was the first rider off at 2:11 PM.

Here's the race organizer's stage three report:

From the Foia effort to the individual effort, the third stage of the 52nd edition of the Volta ao Algarve, this Friday, was marked by the Vilamoura time trial, on a flat 19.5-kilometer route that saw Filippo Ganna deliver and win the day.

The INEOS Grenadiers cyclist arrived in the Algarve as the big favorite to win this time trial, as he is one of the world’s leading specialists in individual effort, and he managed to live up to expectations.

“We are at the beginning of the season, my physical condition is not the best, but I tried to defend myself. I tried to follow the team’s plan and we achieved this fantastic victory. Thank you to the team. It’s important to stay motivated for the next races”, said Ganna after his triumph.

Pejtersen first, Söderqvist after and then… Ganna
Johan-Price Pejtersen of Alpecin-Premier Tech was the first rider of the afternoon to warm the hot seat for a while, before Jakob Söderqvist of Lidl-Treak stole his seat.

Meanwhile, Ganna headed out onto the road, took seven seconds off Söderqvist and took the lead in the hot seat, from where he would not leave.

Ayuso didn’t win, but reinforced the Yellow Jersey
The Italian was threatened by Juan Ayuso, the Yellow Jersey – Turismo do Algarve, and Paul Seixas, but neither of them managed to set the fastest time of the afternoon.

Ayuso, from Lidl-Trek, clocked the second-best time, six seconds behind Ganna, and strengthened his lead in the Volta ao Algarve General Classification, now seven seconds ahead of Seixas.

The young rider from Decathlon CMA CGM Team won in Foia and started Friday’s stage with the same time as his Spanish rival, but only managed to be the fourth fastest, 13 seconds behind Ganna.

João Almeida has less reason to smile: the Portuguese rider from UAE Team Emirates XRG set the tenth fastest time in the time trial and saw Juan Ayuso pull away in the General Classification: the two are now separated by 44 seconds.

“I’m happy, it’s my first time trial with the team and it gives me a lot of confidence to have been competitive with the team’s equipment. We kept the Yellow Jersey – Turismo do Algarve, which was the goal, and now we have two tough days ahead to fight for the victory”, Ayuso said.

Ayuso set the tone, with two tough days ahead, although Sunday is reserved for the final battle for the General Classification. On Saturday, we will have a sprint finish in Lagos. In addition to Ayuso’s Yellow Jersey – Turismo do Algarve, the Green Jersey – Crédito Agrícola (points) belongs to Paul Seixas, as does the White Jersey – IPDJ, for youth. Tomás Contte (Aviludo – Louletano – Loulé) is the mountain leader, wearing the Blue Jersey – Save Water.

Weather at the finish town of Monchique at 1:20 PM, local time: 12C (53F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the north-northwest at 16 km/hr (10 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the race organizer's report.

After the start for sprinters, which saw Paul Magnier wear the Yellow Jersey – Turismo do Algarve, the second day of the Volta ao Algarve brought another kind of adventure for the peloton, with the climb to Alto da Foia.

On the first mountain finish in the Algarvia, Paul Seixas was the strongest, on an afternoon when the cyclists experienced a new route on the climb to Foia, which offered a different kind of difficulty and made the stage even more exciting.

The start was in Portimão, in the Zona Ribeirinha, and as on Wednesday, a group of almost a dozen riders, all from Portuguese teams, managed to form a breakaway before the ten thousand meters mark.

It was from this group of eight cyclists that the winners of the first intermediate sprints of the afternoon emerged. Iker Bonillo Martin (Feira dos Sofás – Boavista) took the lead at the Paderne sprint, while Tomás Contte, the owner of the Blue Jersey – Save Water, was the fastest to pass the first KOM, in Picota.

Not everyone managed to stay in the breakaway, and by the second difficulty, the KOM in Alferce, the group was down to just five riders: Contte was once again the first to pass.

The Argentine cyclist scored a hat trick in the mountain counts in Casal, before the hot spot of Casais and Serenada. Toms Skujins, from Lidl-Trek, was the fastest in the first, Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates XRG) in the second, where, importantly, Juan Ayuso, leader of Lidl-Trek, took the opportunity to add another bonus second, which would later prove decisive.

The climb to Foia began, Lidl-Trek worked hard and split the peloton, until only the trio that is the favorite to fight for the general classification remained: Ayuso, Paul Seixas (Decathlon CMA CGM Team), and João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates XRG).

At the age of 19, and considered one of the next big things of world cycling, Seixas did not hide and took the reins of the group, always closely marked by the opposing duo. Oscar Onley (INEOS Grenadiers) and Matthew Riccitello, Seixas’ teammate at Decathlon, also managed to join them, but in the last few meters before the finish line, the trio regained their advantage.

Then, in an exciting finish, Paul Seixas beat Ayuso in the sprint and proved that he is ready to swim in the shark tank: his introduction to the Algarve was complete.

“Of course I’m happy, it’s special to win here for me and it’s also my first ProSeries victory. It’s incredible. It was amazing to compete against Ayuso and João Almeida, I used to watch them win races on TV and today I’m able to compete against them and win. It’s crazy. It’s incredible to have won, but winning against both of them is even better”, said the young Frenchman after the race.

Ayuso was inches away from celebrating victory, but he ended the day smiling: he is now the owner of the Yellow Jersey – Turismo do Algarve, with the same time as Seixas, who came second. João Almeida is third, seven seconds behind the pair.

“I feel great. The team did a good job, I’m happy to be in yellow and I hope we can hold on to the lead in the GC until the last day”, said Ayuso.

Weather at the finish city of Tavira at 1:15 PM, local time: 16C (61F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the west-southwest at 16 km/hr (10 mph). There is a 2% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage one report.

The heart of Vila Real de Santo António came alive this morning to watch the official start of the 52nd edition of the Volta ao Algarve cycling race, in an opening stage rarely seen in recent years.

The city had not hosted the first stage of the Algarve race for some time, but it was once again the scene of the first pedal strokes in 2026. It was from Praça Marquês de Pombal that more than 150 cyclists set off for the sprint finish in Tavira, won by Paul Magnier. And while there was plenty of excitement in Vila Real de Santo António, Avenida Zeca Afonso in Tavira was filled with a crowd rarely seen before, eager to witness the thrilling outcome of the first round of the Portuguese race.

The early moments of the day saw a compact peloton, but after ten kilometers the race heated up and the breakaway of the day formed, with nine cyclists, all from Portuguese teams.

The peloton, with Soudal Quick-Step setting the pace, never let the breakaway get too far ahead, with about two minutes separating the two groups. It was with a slightly smaller advantage that the nine riders at the front passed the first mountain climb of the day, a third category climb in Mercador: Tomas Contte (Aviludo – Louletano – Loulé) passed in front, ahead of Enzo Leijnse (Anicolor/Campicarn) and João Silva (Feira dos Sofás – Boavista).

The pace remained steady for the next few kilometers, only picking up again near the second mountain climb, in Faz Fato: the peloton, with Alpecin-Premier Tech already working hard, closed in, and at the front a trio broke away from the rest: Tomas Contte, Viacheslav Ivanov (Feirense – Beeceler), and Enzo Leijnse (Anicolor / Campicarn).

THE FILM OF THE STAGE:
Contte took the lead again and ensured that he was the first to wear the Blue Jersey – Save Water, in the mountain classification. Ivanov was second in this second climb, Leijnse third.

Stage one gets started.

In the peloton for most of the day, Hugo Nunes decided to bridge the gap to the front of the race after passing through Faz Fato, just in time to shine in the golden kilometer. The Credibom / La AlumÍnios / Marcos Car rider attacked from the breakaway and took the lead in the first two intermediate sprints of the hot spot. Jan Tratnik (Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe) won the third intermediate sprint.

Meanwhile, Juan Ayuso also took the opportunity to send a message to the competition: tipped as one of the big favorites for the overall victory, the Spaniard, who is making his debut for Lidl-Trek, took bonifications at the last two intermediate sprints.

Magnier won the battle of the strong men
From then on, it was a battle for position until the finish line, with the teams trying to position their fast men in the best possible way. Alpecin-Premier Tech looked like the big favorite to win, with Jasper Philipsen, but it was Paul Magnier, the Frenchman from Soudal Quick-Step, who stole the show.

Magnier was the fastest to the finish line, ahead of Jordi Meeus (Red Bull-BORA-Hansgrohe), who had won at the same location a year ago, and Pavel Bittner of Team Picnic PostNL.

“It’s a good start to the season. I’m very happy with the team’s work. Tomorrow will be too difficult for me, but I’ll do my best to help the team and then focus on the other sprint on Saturday”, said Magnier after the stage.

Paul Magnier won the first stage and is thus the first Yellow Jersey – Turismo do Algarve of the 52nd Volta ao Algarve. Overall, the young Frenchman has a four-second lead over Meeus, in second place, and Hugo Nunes, whose strong performance at the hot spot puts him on the podium at this stage.

Magnier also holds the Green Jersey – Crédito Agrícola, for the points classification, and the White Jersey – IPDJ, for the youth classification. Tomas Contte, meanwhile, will start the second day of the Algarve race wearing the Blue Jersey – Save Water.

The Volta ao Algarve continues on Thursday with the first mountain finish: the second stage connects Portimão to Alto da Foia, covering a distance of 147.2 kilometers.
