Weather at the finish city of Tavira at 12:50 PM, local time: 18C (65F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the south at 23 km/hr (14 mph). There is a 7% chance of rain.

The race: Romain Bardet (Team Picnic-PostNL) crashed with teammate Romain Combaud with 23 km to go and did not finish.

Alberto Dainese (Tudor Pro Cycling) was releghated from second to 134th.

Here's the race report from stage winner Jordi Meeus' Team Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe:

Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe sprinter Jordi Meeus has won today's third stage of the Volta ao Algarve. The 26-year-old Belgian stayed calm amid a hectic, crash-marred finale and and had the fastest legs in the bunch sprint after 183 kilometers. Italy’s Alberto Dainese finished second, with Eritrea’s Biniam Girmay taking third place.

With this triumph, Meeus secured his first victory of the year, while Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe already notched up their sixth win in this still-young season. The team’s best-placed rider in the overall standings of the Algarve Tour remains Primož Roglič. The Slovenian sits in seventh place, 23 seconds behind Swiss leader Jan Christen.

Jordi Meeus: “I’m super happy with this win. I was already second in my first race of the year, and I was really focused on the first stage here in Algarve which also didn’t work out as planned. Today was another opportunity, and I felt strong all day. It was a hectic day from start to finish but the team nailed the sprint preparation despite the many corners and roundabouts—a big thanks to my teammates for doing an amazing job.”

Weather at the finish city of Monchique a PM, local time: 18C (64F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the south at 11 km/hr (7 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The stage: The Volta ao Algarve enters into a new phase this Thursday, one that smiles more on the men in the general classification. The mythical Alto da Foia hosts the finish of the second stage, after a journey of almost 178 kilometers from Lagoa.

It’s a traditional finish, but there are some new features for 2025. First of all, the final climb to the highest point in the Algarve will take place on the northern side of the mountain, where the gradient will be less constant and there will be some more difficult sections.

The climb to the finish line will now be 8.4 kilometers long, but the most demolishing part of the final section will be earlier, 3.5 kilometers from the finish line, where there will be a thousand meters with an average gradient of around ten percent.

That’s why all the ingredients are in place for this to be a day in which the sprinters don’t have much chance of getting on the podium, and in which the main candidates to wear the yellow jersey at Alto do Malhão, in the final stage, take a step forward.

Even so, the men in the sprint will have the chance to score points for the Green Jersey: 22,000 meters from the finish line, in Monchique, there will be an intermediate sprint.

The last few kilometers, as if the climb to Alto da Foia wasn’t enough, promise to be very exciting: in addition to the finish line, there will be two counts for the Mountain Prize. One at kilometer 141.5, third category, in Marmelete, and another just over ten kilometers from the end of the stage, second category, in Pomba.

The Volta ao Algarve is only in its second stage, but it’s on Thursday that some changes in the general classification could begin to emerge. It’s all to see from 12 noon, the start time of the race.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage two report.

Jan Christen, of UAE Team Emirates XRG, is the first Visit Algarve Yellow Jersey in the Volta ao Algarve, after winning the second stage of the Algarvia on Thursday.

Portuguese João Almeida, Christen’s teammate, still threatened the win with an impressive final stretch, but the race didn’t get away from the Swiss rider.

Algarvia headed to Lagos this morning, from where a peloton of 173 riders set off for Alto da Foia, a 177.6-kilometer route that culminated at the highest point in the Algarve.

It didn’t take long to see the first attacks, even in the city in the district of Faro: at kilometer three there were already moves, but it wasn’t until km nine that a breakaway formed.

Four cyclists increased the pace, another five joined shortly after and a group was formed – with the exception of the Portuguese Iuri Leitão (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), who soon gave up on the idea – of eight elements that led the race for several kilometers.

Well into the second half of the stage, the breakaway began to crumble, while the top teams in the bunch set the pace to get to the front.

One by one, the riders fell behind, and the race broke up for good at the start of the climb to Marmelete, one of the three mountain passes in the last 50,000 meters of the race – and the last of the first three that were won by Nicolás Tivani (Aviludo – Louletano – Loulé), one of the breakaways who most animated the race before the final part.

As the slopes got steeper, the main contenders for victory in the General Classification went to the front, in a group that included names like João Almeida, Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) or Primož Roglič (Red Bull – Bora – Hansgrohe).

It was Jan Christen, however, who put on a show. The young Swiss rider’s attacks broke up this group, with Neilson Powless (EF Education-Easy Post), Lucas Vergallito (Alpecin-Deuceninck) and Laurens De Plus (INEOS Grenadiers) still following him for a few minutes, They couldn’t keep up, though.

Only João Almeida, in an impressive final run, managed to catch up with his teammate, in a finish full of fair play and dominated by UAE Team Emirates XRG.

“I’m very happy and very grateful to the team, especially João Almeida and António Morgado, who protected me in the last ten kilometers. It wouldn’t have been possible without the team. I know that António Morgado and João Almeida are very happy for me, we get on very well (…) We pull for each other and that’s what makes our team so strong,” said Christen after the stage.

On the second day of the Volta ao Algarve, Jan Christen is the owner of the Yellow Jersey, four seconds ahead of João Almeida in the GC. Laurens De Plus is in third place.

Christen also owns the other jerseys: the Crédito Agrícola Green Jersey – Points, the Save Water Blue Jersey – Mountain and the IPDJ White Jersey – Youth.

The Algarvia caravan heads to Vila Real de Santo António this Friday, where the third stage starts, on a 183.5-kilometer route that ends in Tavira.

Weather at the finish city of Lagos at 1:00 PM, local time: 20C (68F), fair, with the wind from the east-southeast at 14 km/hr (9 mph). There is just a 2% chance of rain.

The race: The first stage of the 2025 Volta ao Algarve was annuled after the majority of the peloton took a wrong turn just before the finish. Though Filippo Ganna was first across the line, his win does not count.

Here's the race organizer's notice about the annulment:

The College of Commissaires of the 51st Volta ao Algarve has taken the decision to cancel the first stage of the race. On the approach to the finish line in Lagos, the peloton became divided and a large number of the riders took the wrong route, followed the detour of the support cars and missed the finish line.

“The College of Commissaires interpreted the regulations and, given what happened, decided to cancel the stage because they considered that sporting truth did not prevail in the end. All the technical information was clear that the runners should go left at the last roundabout. The fact is that some of them took the right, in a lane parallel to the finish line. It was a wrong decision by the peloton but it’s clear that we didn’t do enough to avoid this outcome, which we very much regret,” explained Sérgio Sousa, director of the Volta ao Algarve.

In view of the stage’s neutralization, the peloton will set off this Thursday for the 2nd stage of the Volta ao Algarve with the clock reset to zero. The stage links Lagoa to Alto da Fóia (Monchique), covering 177.6 kilometers.

Ganna's INEOS Grenadiers posted this:

Following the finish, the decision was made to cancel stage one of the Volta ao Algarve without a result.

Cycling is tough. Some days you win but most you lose.

We want to pay tribute to the incredible love and dedication that organisers and volunteers put into our sport, as well as its amazing fans.

We’re thankful that today everyone finished safely, but let’s use this opportunity to continue to shine a light on making the best sport in the world a safer one.

The stage: Portimão is hosting the start of the Volta ao Algarve cycling race for the fourth time in a row, in what is the 51st edition of the Portuguese event. This Wednesday, the city of Portimão is the venue for the first stage, which finishes in Lagos, over 192 kilometers.

It’s not expected to be a day in which there will be any major upheavals in the general classification, as the peloton is expected to finish in a sprint.

The peloton on its way to the finish city of Lagos.

That’s why, more than the GC men, this is a race that will interest strong names like Wout van Aert (Team Visma | Lease a Bike), Biniam Girmay (Intermarché – Wanty) or Filippo Ganna (INEOS Grenadiers), riders who will certainly be in the fight for the Green Jersey in the overall points classification.

It’s on Avenida dos Descobrimentos, in Lagos, that everything will be decided, in the first moment of the Algarve’s great spectacle, which should start to move at the last traffic circle before the finish, about 800 meters from the finish line.

Before that, however, there are more points to be collected. At kilometer 98, in Nave, the first count of the Mountain Prize takes place, on a third category climb that starts at kilometer 94.

Then, 30 kilometers from the finish line, there’s a warm-up for the sprinters, with a intermediate sprint in Vila do Bispo, counting towards the points classification. There, the aforementioned Van Aert, Girmay or Ganna are names to watch out for, but also cyclists such as Portugal’s Iuri Leitão (Caja Rural), Milan Fretin (Cofidis) or Arnaud de Lie (Lotto).

The peloton races through a Portuguese town.

Time to turn right.

Results: These results do not count. The stage was cancelled.
