The race:

The Giro d'Abruzzo is almost a new race. It is organized by RCS Sport, the owners of the Giro d'Italia, Il Gran Piemonte, Il Lombardia and several other iconic bicycle races.

The intent was to replace the Giro di Sicilia, run from 1961 to 2007.

The Abruzzo is a region of Southern Italy. Its western border is 80 kilometers from Rome. It's considered a region of Southern Italy because of its culture, language, economy and history, though geographically it sits in central Italy.
