Weather at the finish city of San Benedetto dei Marsi at 2:55 PM, local time: 27C (81F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the south-southwest at 16 km/hr (10 mph). There is a 6% chance of rain.

The stage: A largely flat stage with a short climb early on before entering the Fucino Plain. The route passes through Magliano de’ Marsi, Celano and Gioia dei Marsi before reaching San Benedetto dei Marsi, where riders complete a 27.7-kilometre circuit featuring gentle undulations. Roads are generally wide, although urban sections include the usual traffic-calming features.

Final kilometers: The closing kilometers are flat, with long, wide straights leading into San Benedetto dei Marsi, where the riders negotiate town streets interrupted by several right-angle turns before a slightly uphill finish.

Never stop believing! Filippo D’Aiuto produced a masterpiece of strength and resilience at the finish in San Benedetto dei Marsi, on Stage 3 of Il Giro d’Abruzzo 2026. The Friulian rider from General Store-Essegibi-F.lli Curia, who had been part of the day’s breakaway, found himself alone at the front with 15 km to go and somehow managed to defend a 45” advantage all the way to the line, holding off the fast-charging peloton.

Once again, Dorian Godon (Netcompany Ineos) was left disappointed. After his team had worked all day, the Frenchman won the bunch sprint but had to settle for second place, with Tommaso Dati (Team Ukyo) third. Alessandro Fancellu (MBH Bank CSB Telecom Fort) remains in the Maglia BiancoVerdeBlu and even managed to extend his lead over Lennart Jasch (Tudor), second overall, by 4” after a gap opened up in the final sprint.

D’Aiuto goes all-in in the finale
The breakaway formed after the Valico Colle Civitella, with Jack Makohon (EF Education-Aevolo), Filippo D’Aiuto (General Store-Essegibi-F.lli Curia), Omer Ramon (NSN Development), Michele Pascarella (Solution Tech NIPPO Rali), Giacomo Garavaglia and Manuel Oioli (Swatt Club) building a maximum advantage of 4’30” over a peloton driven by Netcompany Ineos and Caja Rural-Seguros RGA, the latter working for Fernando Gaviria.

It looked like the classic script, with little hope for the breakaway. But with 30 km to go, D’Aiuto and Oioli, unhappy with the pace at the front, upped the tempo and rode away from their companions. The General Store rider in particular looked to be flying and, with 15 km remaining, he powered clear of Oioli as well. It seemed like a desperate move, perhaps little more than an attempt to gain some extra exposure, with the peloton looming just 45” behind. Instead, D’Aiuto kept going full gas and his advantage began to fall very, very slowly.

Netcompany struggled to find much cooperation from the other teams, opening the door for D’Aiuto to pull off a remarkable victory. He repeatedly looked over his shoulder, kept an eye on the gap to the peloton and eventually reached the finish with enough time to flex his muscles in celebration.

Although he does not officially race at professional level, competing for a Continental team, this is already his second victory against the pros after his success at the Settimana Coppi & Bartali in March. To make the achievement even more impressive, it came in the fastest stage in Il Giro d’Abruzzo history, completed at an average speed of 48.793 km/h.

The stage: A mountain stage featuring several climbs, the toughest of which, Forcella di Acciano, comes shortly after the start. A long descent brings the riders back near Popoli Terme before climbing through Castiglione a Casauria, Pescosansonesco and Nocciano on constantly undulating roads. The final 20 kilometers are predominantly uphill, culminating at the summit of Scagnano (KOM) before a series of gentle rises and descents to the finish.

A perfectly timed and powerful move saw Lennart Jasch claim Stage 2 of Il Giro d’Abruzzo 2026, the Popoli Terme–Caramanico Terme. The Tudor rider had attacked alongside Matteo Scalco (XDS Astana) and Mattia Bais (Polti VisitMalta) on the climb towards Scagnano, before going solo around the flamme rouge and holding off the fast-charging peloton all the way to the line.

It was a bitter blow for Dorian Godon and Netcompany Ineos, who were unable to close the gap to the German. Despite dominating the sprint from the chasing group, the Frenchman had to settle for 2nd place, ahead of Scalco. Jasch also made a significant leap up the general classification, gaining nine positions to move into 2nd overall, just 4 seconds behind Alessandro Fancellu (MBH Bank CSB Telecom Fort), who retains the leader’s jersey.

The Scagnano climb proves decisive
After around 20 kilometres, six riders managed to break clear: Txomin Juaristi (Euskaltel Euskadi), Tommaso Bosio (General Store-Essegibi-F.lli Curia), Álvaro García (NSN Development), Kasper Andersen (Swatt Club), Adrián Benito (Polti VisitMalta) and Emanuele Ansaloni (Technipes #inEmiliaRomagna). They were reduced to five when Andersen lost contact on the steep Forcella di Acciano.

The breakaway tried to make life difficult for the peloton, but unfortunately for them, too many teams were determined to keep the race under control. Alongside MBH, Netcompany, Team Ukyo and XDS Astana all contributed to the chase, and with 16 km remaining the breakaway was reeled in.

On the Scagnano climb, it was the Kazakh team who took control, stretching out the peloton and paving the way for Matteo Scalco to attack in an attempt to draw out his rivals. Bais and Jasch bridged across to the rider from Vicenza, and the trio pressed on all the way to the summit, cresting the climb with a 25” advantage over the Netcompany-led peloton. The situation remained unchanged on the false flat that followed, until Jasch finally made his move, leaving his companions behind ahead of the final ramp to the finish.

It was his second victory of the season after his success at the Tour of the Alps. A hugely satisfying result for the 2000-born German, who is still relatively new to cycling: until 2023, he was a speed skater, and he only took up cycling just over two years ago.

Tomorrow brings the least demanding stage of the week in terms of climbing, the 159 km Oricola (Piana del Cavaliere)–San Benedetto dei Marsi, which on paper should suit the sprinters.

Weather at the finish city of Casalincontrada at 2:45 PM, local time: 26C (78F), fair, with the wind from the north-northeast at 16 km/hr (10 mph). No rain is forecast.

The stage: A very demanding opening stage featuring a first section focused on the slopes of the Majella before finishing atop a true wall climb. The route heads along the Adriatic coast and through the Sangro Valley before tackling a succession of rolling roads via Bomba and Villa Santa Maria, followed by the climbs to Montelapiano and, after Casalanguida, Colle dei Ferrari. A long descent leads to State Road 81 before a gentle rise to Guardiagrele and a fast descent to the foot of the final climb. The opening part is raced on medium-width roads with numerous bends and small villages, while the finale takes place on wider, straighter roads.
The final kilometers are uphill, with gradients exceeding 10% before the last corner and a slightly rising finishing straight.

The race: Edward Cruz (Bardiani CSF 7 Saber) did not start.

CASALINCONTRADA (CHIETI): Alessandro Fancellu won the opening stage of the Giro d’Abruzzo and deservedly claimed the general classification leader's jersey, holding a 6-second lead over Mattys Rondel and Diego Ulissi.
The rider from Como, racing for the MBH Bank CSB ​​Telecom Fort team, secured the win after a challenging 155-kilometer route from Cupello to Casalincontrada. This marks his second victory of the season—following his win in Stage 4 of the Czech Tour a month ago—and sees him don both the race leader's jersey and the points classification jersey.

For the team led by Antonio Bevilacqua, Gabor Deak, the D’Aprile family, and Zoltan Bebto, this is their 16th victory of the season. It is a particularly emotional win for Bevilacqua, who hails from the Abruzzo region.

THE SPRINT: On the uphill finish, Fancellu chose the perfect moment to launch his decisive attack; he surged 350 meters from the line, immediately opening a gap that his rivals could not close. He finished ahead of Rondel and Ulissi, claiming a prestigious victory under the guidance of sports directors Gianluca Valoti and Davide Martinelli.

Supported by a cohesive team throughout the stage, the rider demonstrated a level of consistency never seen before in his career, the result of careful, collaborative planning and his own hard work.

"It was hard to pick the right moment to go, because if you attack too early, you risk paying the price in the final stretch. Timing was crucial; I had to stay calm and launch my move at exactly the right moment. I’d lost races a few times this year by making that kind of mistake. I’m in great form and proud of what I’ve achieved this season. I’ve had some important results over the last month, including fifth-place finishes at Larciano and in Tuscany."
