Jarno Widar has won the Italian classic Tre Valli Varesine. The 20-year-old Belgian beat Tom Pidcock and Matteo Jorgenson in a three-man sprint to claim the first professional victory of his career. “It’s an incredible feeling to take my first professional victory.”
Tre Valli Varesine once again proved to be a tough battle over the hills around Varese. Lotto-Intermarché kept Jarno Widar well positioned throughout the race, before the action exploded in the finale. “With around fifteen kilometres to go, Pidcock attacked, and the three of us got away.”
The trio entered the final kilometres with an advantage of around twenty seconds. “I tried to believe in my sprint. I knew I had to come from behind with speed, so I deliberately left a small gap. I started my sprint with 270 metres to go because I know I can handle sprints like that. When you look at the riders I was able to beat here, it’s actually hard to believe. I’m super happy with this victory.”
For Widar, the victory is also a particularly rewarding conclusion to a difficult start to the season. “It hasn’t been easy because of illness and injuries. I wasn’t in my best shape when I went to the Vuelta, but I was able to finish it with a good feeling. I had that same good feeling at the Giro dell’Emilia on Saturday, but I was set back by bad luck there. That’s why it feels so good to take my first professional victory today.”
