Here's the report from winner Clément Champoussin's Team Arkea-B&B Hotels:
Clément Champoussin won the Giro della Toscana on Wednesday, his first victory in 2024 with the Arkea-B&B Hotels team.
Clément Champoussin:
I'm delighted to have won the Giro della Toscana from a personal point of view, because since the Tour de France and the Arctic Race, I'd only competed in the Bretagne Classic. I did a lot of training on my own after the Brittany Classic, but obviously when I came here to Italy I had a few unknowns. The hard work paid off with this success. The Giro della Toscana is a race that I enjoy. I managed my race and the climbs well, so as not to get too far into the red. I'm happy to have won. Michael Storer and I worked well together over the last twenty-five kilometres, we were able to hold off the chasing pack and, in the end, victory came down to a sprint between him and me. The sprint was more about freshness. I didn't throw him, I stayed behind my opponent and at one hundred and fifty metres we started to sprint, and in the end it was me who turned out to be the ‘fresher’ of the two of us. This win is a great personal achievement for me after a series of second places, but it's also a collective victory that I was able to achieve with the help of all my Arkea-B&B Hotels team-mates involved in this end-of-season Italian semi-classic.
Sébastien Hinault, Sportif director:
The guys stuck to their instructions today. The race was fairly clear, and we knew it was going to come down to the final section of the Monte Serra. Between the 2 climbs, a group of 16 riders broke away. We had Jean-Loup Fayolle. It was perfect because it forced other teams to do the work. Then it was pedal time. A group of 7 riders with Clément Champoussin broke away at the front on the Monte Serra, then Clément attacked at the summit with Storer. They managed to open up a good gap. On the final section, the gap between the duo and their pursuers fluctuated between 25‘ and 40’. In that situation, we knew that Clément had the best chance of winning. That's what we said at the briefing this morning. We knew that Clément was strong and it was for him today. We're really pleased for him and for the Arkea-B&B Hotels team, and all the more so when the scenario we envisaged goes according to plan.
