Cycling's 50 Triumphs and Tragedies

The Race: The 2015 Japan Cup was a tough, hilly race. The course was the same as used for the 1990 World Road Championships when Rudy Dhaenens beat Dirk de Wolf, 14 laps of 103 kilometers. The 36.869 km/hr average speed tells how hard the race was.

It was on the final lap that the race was decided. Nine riders were away on that final circuit: Sebastian Henao, Diego Ulissi, Jan Polanc, Yukiya Arashiro, Matej Mohoric, Benjamin Prades, Bauke Mollema, Ben Swift and Floris Gerts.

But there were just three racers clear on the penultimate ascent: Bauke Mollema, Diego Ulissi and Sebastian Henao. Arashiro was able to bridge up to them.

In the final meters Henao wasn't able to stay with the quartet and Mollema was slightly ahead at the uphill finish to take the prestigious race. This was Mollema's second victory of the season. He also won the Tour of Alberta.
