Paris-Roubaix cobbles

Compiègne - Roubaix: 259.2 kilometers. 30 sectors of pavé totalling 53.7 km

Paris–Roubaix: The Inside Story

Les Woodland's book Paris-Roubaix: The Inside Story -All the bumps of cycling's cobbled classic is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Roubaix at 2:10 PM, local time: 14C (57F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the west-southwest at 24 km/hr (15 mph). There is a 1% chance of rain. The was some light rain on the start city of Compiègne early in the morning and did rain during the night, so some cobbles may still be wet and slippery.

The race: This is bound to be a day to remember, as two of the best cyclists of this century are chasing both victory and history in the Hell of the North. All eyes are set on defending champion Mathieu van der Poel and the world’s current number one rider Tadej Pogacar, yet there is a deep field of challengers hoping to upset them and this is the Hell of the North - a race where anything can happen.

175 riders began the race at 11:25 AM.

Early in the race, Manlio Moro & Albert Torres (both Movistar) abandoned after crashing.

Here's the race organizer's 2025 Paris-Roubaix summary:

Three out of three for Mathieu van der Poel, who in this 2025 Paris-Roubaix became the third rider in history to win three consecutive editions of this race after Octave Lapize (1909, 1910, 1911) and Francesco Moser (1978, 1979, 1980). The Alpecin-Deceuninck rider went toe-to-toe in Mons-en-Pévèle with current Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar, who impressed on his debut in the Hell of the North by playing for victory until being forced to settle with second place by a crash inside the final 40 kilometres. With this result, Van der Poel and Pogacar are now tied at 8 Monuments each, 6th and 7th in the legendary ranking of Classic winners at age 30 and 26. They were joined in the podium at the Vélodrome André Pétrieux by Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek), who finished 3rd as he already did last year.

175 riders took the start on the 122nd edition of Paris-Roubaix at 11:25, off to ride 259,2 kilometres between Compiègne and the Vélodrome André Pétrieux in Roubaix with 30 cobbled sectors to be covered. It had rained overnight and the skies were cloudy, yet it was not a cold nor remarkably wet race for the riders.

It's time to race. ASO photo

It took 22 kilometres for a breakaway to go clear with Kim Heiduk (Ineos Grenadiers), Oier Lazkano (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), Markus Hoelgaard (Uno-X Mobility), Jonas Rutsch (Intermarché-Wanty), Max Walker (EF Education-EasyPost), Jasper De Buyst (Lotto), Rory Townsend (Q36.5) and Abram Stockman (Unibet Tietema Rockets). The eight riders built a gap that peaked at 3’05” as they were 90 kilometres into the race. The peloton then began to speed up with the first cobbled sector of the day, Troisvilles to Inchy (km 95.8 — 2.2 km) ***, in sight.

26 kilometers into the race a break of eight goes clear. By kilometer 59 they were three minutes up the road. The riders in the break are: Kim Heiduk (Ineos Grenadiers), Oier Lazkano (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), Markus Hoelgaard (Uno-X Mobility), Jonas Rutsch (Intermarché-Wanty), Max Walker (EF Education-EasyPost), Jasper De Buyst (Lotto), Rory Townsend (Q36.5) and Abram Stockman (Unibet Tietema Rockets).

Tense chase for Philipsen and Ganna
Ineos Grenadiers was driving the peloton when its leader Filippo Ganna suffered a mechanical that forced him to chase along with his teammates for more than 30 kilometres. The British team found the company of riders like Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) or Dylan van Baarle (Visma | Lease a Bike), who were also affected by different incidents. They finally managed to rejoin the bunch during sector 25, Verchain-Maugré to Quérénaing (km 128 — 1.6 km) ***. The gap for the eight men at the front was steadily reduced to 50”, clocked at the entrance of Haveluy to Wallers (km 154.5 — 2.5 km) ****.

The break riding on the Arenberg cobbles.

Race-defining attack by Van der Poel
It was there that Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek), Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) and Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) launched their first attacks of the day, whittling the peloton down to around 20 riders. They insisted on accelerating in the Trouée d'Arenberg (km 164,4 - 2,3 km) *****, reeling the breakaway back into the favorites group. The key attack, though, was made by Van der Poel at the exit from Wallers to Hélesmes (km 167.4 — 1.6 km) ***. Only Pogacar, Pedersen, his teammate Philipsen and Decathlon-Ag2r La Mondiale’s Stefan Bissegger managed to follow the defending champion in order to form a five-strong group at the front of the race.

The break of five with 75km to go

Pogacar and Van der Poel alone at the front
At Tilloy to Sars-et-Rosières (km 187.7 — 2.4 km) ****, Pedersen punctured and fell out of contention for the win while Pogacar accelerated to establish a duo at the front along with Van der Poel. Shortly after, Bissegger suffered a flat too and Philipsen dug deep in his own to regain the head of the race. The newly-formed trio cooperated all the way to Mons-en-Pévèle (km 210.6 — 3 km) *****, where Van der Poel hit the afterburners and Pogacar made good use of this to drop Philipsen off the front. Meanwhile, a chasing group with Bissegger, Pedersen, Hoelgaard, Rutsch, Florian Vermeersch (UAE Team Emirates) and Wout van Aert (Visma | Lease a Bike) trailed 1’30” behind.

The lead trio with 66.7 kms to go: Mathieu van der Poel, Tadej Pogacar & Japer Philipsen.

Unfortunate crash for Pogacar
Pogacar was putting the hammer down at sector 9 from Pont-Thibault to Ennevelin (km 220 — 1.4 km) *** when he misjudged a right-hand turn and crashed as a result.

Both van der Poel and Pogacar mis-judge a corner, but Pogacar goes down.

He rode out of the sector 20” in arrears of Van der Poel, with whom he sustained a duel all the way to the finish. The toe-to-toe, though, finished with 21 kilometres to go when the Slovenian had to change bikes and the gap went up to 50”.

Not his day. Tadej Pogacar changes bikes with 20.8 kms to go.

Despite a late puncture for Van der Poel midway through the Carrefour de l'Arbre (km 242.1 — 2.1 km) *****, the race was sealed for him to finish first and Pogacar second.

The near instantaneous bike change.

Mathieu van der Poel off the front with 10kms to go, trying to make it three Paris-Roubaix victories in a row. ASO photo

As for the third spot in the podium, Philipsen was brought back by the chasing group, from which Vermeersch, Pedersen and Van Aert powered away at Bourghelles to Wannehain (km 234.9 — 1.1 km) ***. The trio sprinted for third place in the Vélodrome André Pétrieux, with the Dane taking the best out of his Belgian breakaway companions.

He does it. Mathieu van der Poel won his third consecutive Paris-Roubaix.

And he is clearly well-pleased with his victory. Sirotti photo

The new approach to the Touée d'Arenberg

List of cobblestone sectors:

Race preview: The combined length of the cobbled sectors in the 122nd edition of Paris–Roubaix, scheduled for Sunday, 13 April, will be a bit shorter than last year. Starting in Troisvilles (km 95), 30 sectors totalling 55.3 km (down from 55.7 km in 2024) will leave the champions shaken and stirred.

Speaking to the media during the final reconnaissance, the race director, Thierry Gouvenou, explained the rationale behind the design of the chicane leading into the Trouée d'Arenberg: "There will be four right turns within 600 metres. The approach should be smoother than with the hairpin bend that we had last year. The Porte du Hainaut community of municipalities had the road that we had been unable to use in 2024 brought up to code, repaving a small part that needed to be patched up".

The fifth edition of Paris–Roubaix Femmes avec Zwift will take place one day earlier with a total distance of 148.5 km, the same as in 2024, and an unchanged programme as far as the cobbles are concerned: he ladies tackling the last 17 sectors of the men's course, amounting to 29.2 km.

Here's the organizer's race summary:
Pauline Ferrand-Prevot (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) took a memorable win in the fifth edition of Paris-Roubaix Femmes avec Zwift on Saturday afternoon. Having only returned to road racing this year after becoming Olympic mountain bike champion at Paris 2024, Ferrand-Prevot went solo in the final 20km, taking a clear victory in the famous Velodrome Andre-Petrieux, becoming the first French woman to win the race. Letizia Borghesi (EF Education-Oatly) finished second by 58”, with Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime) at +1'01", winning a sprint finish for third from Marianne Vos (Visma|Lease a Bike) and Alison Jackson (EF Education-Oatly).

The start line. That's world road champion and 2024 Paris-Roubaix winner Lotte Kopecky in the rainbow jersey.

135 riders at the start
Sofie Van Rooijen (UAE Team ADQ) and Julie Hendrickx (Lotto Ladies) did not take the start, leaving 135 riders in the peloton as they got underway in Denain. The neutralised start of the Hell of the North’ was given at 1pm with the riders commencing the real racing 10 minutes later, with 17 cobbled sections awaiting them over the 148.5 km course, which was exactly the same route as the 2024 race.

The race gets its official start.

Constant early attacks
After the opening 20km of constant attempts to form a breakaway, eventually Dutch rider Quinty Ton (Liv-AlUla-Jayco) and Poland’s Aurela Nerlo (Winspace Orange Seal) created a one-minute gap over the peloton at km 33, an advantage which grew to 2'20" after 50km of racing. As the riders hit the first cobbled sector from Hornaing to Wandignies at km 66 the leading duo were 2’50” clear of the chasing bunch. From there the action was relentless, with a total of 29.2km awaiting over the cobbles in total.

The experienced Dutch Lidl - Trek rider Ellen van Dijk attacked out of the bunch towards the end of the second cobbled sector (Warlaing to Brillon, 2.4km, 3*) and early on the third sector of cobbles (Tilloy to Sars-et-Rosières, 2.4km, 4*) she was 20” ahead of the bunch and 55” adrift of the two escapees.

Dancing across the cobbles
By the fifth sector of cobblestones (Sector 13, Orchies, 1.7km, 3*) van Dijk had reached the front of the race, but Nerlo had dropped behind and the peloton were not far adrift at just 15”. Entering Sector 12 (Auchy-lez-Orchies, 2.7km, 4*) a big crash involving Lily Williams (Human Powered Health), Linda Riedmann (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) and three other riders disrupted the bunch. Following the crash Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx-Protime) attacked on Sector 12 and Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime) followed, the pair catching van Dijk in front, soon joined by Marianne Vos (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) in the lead.

A strong lead group
That lead group expanded to eight riders, also soon including Chloe Dygert (Canyon-SRAM-Zondacrypto), Alison Jackson (EF Education-Oatly), Romy Kasper (Human Powered Health) and Jelena Eric (Movistar). There were only six left at the front leaving Sector 11 (Mons-en-Pévèle), Kopecky's pace taking its toll as Kasper and Van Dijk dropped behind. Kopecky tried to force the issue again on Sector 9 but could not go clear and shortly after that section of cobbles a chasing group including Pauline Ferrand-Prevot (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) joined the leaders, to make it a strong collective of 20 at the front going into the final 35km, with eight cobbled sector remaining.

Doesn't play well with others. Pauline Ferrand-Prevot is away with a 55-second lead with 8 kms to go.

Ferrand-Prevot goes on the attack
After Van Dijk's earlier efforts it was Emma Norsgaard's (Lidl-Trek) turn to break away with 32 km to go, just after Sector 8 (Templeuve). The Dane, sixth in 2021, quickly widened the gap to 36" with 28 km to go. Frenchwoman Ferrand-Prevot managed to surprise the group of favourites with 25 km to go, the Olympic mountain bike champion gaining a few metres as Sector 6 (Bourghelles to Wannehain) began and pushing further clear, chasing after Norsgaard who she would soon catch. That leading duo went into Sector 5 (Camphin-en-Pévèle, 1.8km, 4*) with a 27" lead over the chasing group, with Ferrand-Prevot soon leaving Norsgaard behind her in the dust. With 10km to go Ferrand-Prevot was well in control, 25" ahead of Norsgaard and one minute clear of the rest.

Pauline Ferrand-Prévot takes a brilliant win in Roubaix.

A historic first French win
In the final kilometres Norsgaard lost touch with the lead and dropped back, with Ferrand-Prevot flying over the final cobbled sector (Roubaix (Espace Charles Crupelandt), 0.3km, 1*) and riding solo into the velodrome to the wild applause of the cheering French fans. It was a famous victory for the national icon, as she was able to celebrate before crossing the line almost a minute ahead of closest challenger Borghesi.

The podium, from left: Letizia Borghesi (2nd), Pauline Ferrand-Prevot (1nst), & Lorena Wiebes (3rd)
