The Race: Today was the Vuelta's last stage in the high mountains. Only the final stage with its 9.7 km individual time trial remains. It was the last real chance to make a big difference in the standings and Alberto Contador showed he is the Vuelta's best climber by winning the stage alone.

Four riders went clear at the 42nd kilometer: Jerome Coppel (Cofidis), Przemyslaw Niemiec (Lampre), Wouter Poels (Omega Pharma) and Maxime Mederel (Europcar). None presented a GC threat. Over the several difficult climbs the riders in break were absorbed by the pack. Niemiec was the last to be caught, staying away until the final climb, the special category ascent of the Ancares.

On the Ancares, with 8 kilometers to go, Joaquin Rodriguez was the first of the big GC men to attack. His effort looked good and he soon had a half-minute lead.

Alejandro Valverde gave chase, drawing Contador, Chris Froome and Fabio Aru.

Froome unleashed a series of vicious attacks that allowed him to catch, pass and drop everyone but Contador. Contador rode on Froome's wheel, letting the Sky rider to the work.

After the the pair had gone under the Red Kite, in an impressive display of power, Contador got out of the saddle and simply left Froome behind. Contador crossed the line 16 seconds ahead of Froome for his second summit win this Vuelta. He now leads Froome by 1min 37sec, probably enough to withstand whatever assault Froome mounts in tomorrow's 9.7 km time trial.

Valverde came in 57 seconds later, cementing his third place in the GC.

Olympics 50 Craziest Stories

The Start: This is the last day in the high mountains with an above-categorization finish at Puerto de Ancares. Tomorrow is the final stage, an individual time trial. Three riders did not start: Filippo Pozzato, Pieter Sierry and Dario Cataldo, who crashed badly yesterday. Cataldo wanted to stay in the race, but doctors prevented his riding today.

Km 66, 120 km to go: We've got a break of four riders who have a gap 5min 28sec: Jerome Coppel (Cofidis), Przemyslaw Niemiec (Lampre), Wouter Poels (Omega Pharma) and Maxime Mederel (Europcar). The quartet went clear at about the 42nd kilometer. It was initially a trio, but Poels bridged up to the escape.

Km 70, 116 km to go: The gap has grown to 7min 40sec. The other rides are very aware of Chris Froome's improving form. Sky teammate Phillip Deignan said that the final climb will be where the race's big showdown will be and he believes Froome can win the Vuelta.

Km 85, 100 km to go: This is interesting. None of the riders in the break presents a GC threat. The best placed is Niemiec, 27th and more than an hour down. But... there are enough KOM points in play (40) today that he could take the classification from Luis Leon Sanchez. I believe Niemiec would have to win each climb, including the finish at Ancares, to take the dots.

The KOM standings at the start of today's stage:

1 Luis León Sánchez Luis Caja Rural Seguros RGA 58 points
2 Alejandro Valverde Movistar Team 30
3 Alberto Contador Tinkoff - Saxo 24
4 Przemyslaw Niemiec Lampre Merida 20

The quartet's gap has ballooned out to 10min 33sec.

While we're at it, here's the GC at the start of the stage:

1 Alberto Contador Tinkoff - Saxo 76hr 0min 40sec
2 Christopher Froome Team SKY @ 1min 19sec
3 Alejandro Valverde Movistar Team + 1' 32''
4 Joaquin Rodriguez Team Katusha + 2' 29''
5 Fabio Aru Astana Pro Team + 3' 15''
6 Daniel Martin Garmin Sharp + 6' 52''
7 Samuel Sánchez BMC Racing Team + 6' 59''
8 Warren Barguil Team Giant - Shimano + 9' 12''
9 Daniel Navarro Cofidis Solutions Crédits + 9' 44''
10 Damiano Caruso Cannondale Pro Cycling + 9' 45''

Km 89, 97 km to go: The results of the intermediate sprint at Sarria: 1st Jerome Coppel, 2nd Wouter Poels, 3rd Przemyslaw Niemiec. Gap is 10min 55sec.

Km 102, 84 km to go: The riders on on the day's first climb, the second-catgory Alto de Vilaesteva. The efforts of Sky and Astana has brought the break's gap down to 8min 12sec. To recap, the riders in the break: Jerome Coppel (Cofidis), Prsemyslaw Niemiec (Lampre), Wouter Poels (Omega Pharma) and Maxime Mederel (Europcar).

Astana rider Daniil Fominykh has abandoned the Vuelta.

Km 113, 73 km to go: The order over the Vilaesteva: 1st Wouter Poels, 2nd Maxime Mederel, 3rd Jerome Coppel. Since Niemiec was not in this leading trio, he no longer endangers Luis Leon Sanchez's hold on the KOM classification. The only riders who could take the KOM from Sacnhez are Alejandro Valverde and Alberto Contador.

Currently the break is 6min 47sec ahead of the peloton.

Km 122, 64 km to go: It's raining as the riders climb the third category Alto de O Lago. The leading trio are 6min 40sec ahead of the peloton. On the descent of the Vilaesteva three riders fell on the wet road: Jacques van Rensburg, Esteban Chaves and Ramon Sinkeldam. All three remounted without any serious problems.

Km 132, 54 km to go: The order over the Alto de O Lago: 1st Przemyslaw Niemiec, 2nd Jerome Coppel, 3rd Wouter Poels. The four riders in the break are currently 5min 55sec ahead of the Astana/Sky led pack.

46 km to go: The riders are on a steep uncategorized climb before a descent to a first-category climb. The break has a lead of 4min 51sec. The peloton looks together and not particularly strung out.

Km 145, 41 km to go: Sky is leading the pack on a high-speed descent of the O Lago, 3min 44sec behind the break.

37 km to go: Gap is 3min 41sec, Sky still leads the peloton with Astana right behind them.

31 km to go: The riders on on the first category Folgueiras. Wouter Poels has been dropped form the break. The lead trio has 2min 40sec. Luis Leon Sanchez punctured, but he is chasing back on. Sky still has lots of muscle at the fornt of the peloton.

27 km to go: It doesn't look good for the break. They have only 1min 29sec now while Sky's Kiryienka pounds away at the front of the peloton. Contador stays near the front with three teammates close by. The peloton is really strung out now on the climb.

Km 26: The riders in the break are attacking each other, but have come back together. Gap is 1min 23sec. Contador looks to be about the 7th man in the peloton.

23 km to go: The gap up to the break of Van Rensburg, Chaves and Sinkeldam is only 48 seconds. The peloton is down to about 30 riders. It looks like all the big GC guys are there.

21 km to go: Contador just nosed to the front as the pack went over the Folguerias, 40 seconds behind the break.

Order over the Folguerias: 1st Przemyslaw Niemiec, 2nd Maxime Mederel, 3rd Jerome Coppel.

Sky is taking the point as the pack descends.

18 km to go: Niemiec has taken off alone on the descent. Coppel is chasing.

11 km to go: Coppel couldn't close the gap and has been caught by the pack. Niemiec remains 17sec in front of the Sky-led pack as they climb the Puerto de Ancares. Froome rolled ahead of the pack at the Murias intermediate sprint, snagging a couple of bonus seconds.

9 km to go: 18% gradient! Philip Deignan leads Sky. Looks like about 12 riders in the Froome, Valverde, Rodriguez, Aru, Contador group. Niemiec has been caught.

Lead group is down to 8 riders.

8 km to go: Joaquin Rodriguez attacks. He seems to draw no response. He's got 14 seconds. Now Valverde goes after him, taking Warren Barguil with him.

Barguil can't stay with Valverde. Now Froome closes up to Valverde with Contador and Aru. The four have formed an elite chase group, 21 seconds behind Rodriguez.

Aru is dropped and then claws his way back on. Froome is settng the pace with the other three on his wheel.

6 km to go: Rodriguez is doing something big today. He has grown his gap to 31 seconds. Aru is dropped from the Froome group.

Froome took a vicious pull and Valverde is dropped. He has just Contador on his wheel.

5 km to go: Froome/Contador have closed to within 7 seconds of Rodriguez. Froome attacks again but can't drop Contador.

Rodriguez has been caught.

Froome goes again but Rodriguez and Contador hangs on. Valverde has recovered a bit and seems to be holding his gap of 13 seconds and not losing more ground.

4 km to go: Froome stares at his power meter as he leads Contador and Rodriguez.

Rodriguez is dropped. It's now a big fight between Contador and Froome for the 2014 Vuelta a España.

3 km to go: The road flattens and Froome continues to lead Contador. Valverde has caught and passed Rodriguez and is 19 seconds behind Froom/Contador.

2 km to go: Froome still has Contador on his wheel. Aru has caught Rodriguez.

Under the Red Kite: Valverde is now more than a minute behind. Froome tries again to drop Contador, but the Spaniard is still there.

The Finish: It gets steeper. Bam! Contador attacks! He's gone. He flies away to what looks like what will be a stage victory.

He does it. Alberto Contador wins stage 20, looks like about 15 seconds ahead of Froome. Valverde comes in about a minute later.
