The Race: Stage 13 started on fire and stayed that way until the end. By km 65 there were eleven riders off the front with a two and a half minute gap. They had been away since the fourteenth kilometer. None of the breakaways were GC threats, but there were some fine riders in the group: Alexey Lutsenko , Jay Robert Thomson, Peter Sagan, Paolo Longo Borghini, Jasper Stuyven, Damiano Cunego, Stef Clement, Luis León Sánchez, Danilo Wyss, Damien Gaudin and Vegard Breen.

Orica-GreenEdge spent much of the stage keeping the break from running away with the race, never letting the escapees have more than a three-minute gap.

On the day's second categorized climb, the Alto de Caracol, the break fractured with five riders in a front group: Luis Leon Sanchez, Alexey Lutsenko, Damiano Cunego, Danilo Wyss and Damien Gaudin.

It appeared that with the day's stiff uphill finish, Alberto Contador's team wanted the break to succeed rather than risk Alejandro Valverde's explosive form allowing him to capture the stage win and the 10 bonus seconds.

With fourteen kilometers to go Lutsenko attacked the break. That spelled the end for the escape. The other four gave up and Lutsenko was caught with seven kilometers remaining.

On the final ascent the first to go was Gianluca Brambilla, but then Cofidis rider Daniel Navarro unleashed an attack that had real force. Navarro blew by the faltering Brambilla and continued up the hill. In the now drastically reduced peloton, the big GC men mostly marked each other.

Navarro had the suds to make it to the line and win the stage, followed in by Daniel Moreno, Wilco Kelderman and Alejandro Valverde. By coming in fourth, Valverde wasn't able to collect any bonus time and remains 20 seconds behind Alberto Contador.

Contador's seventh-place finish in the group with Valverde, Rodriguez, Froome, Uran, and Sanchez allows him to remain the Vuelta's GC leader.

Stage 13 live updates:

Weather at Obregón at 2:30 PM local time: 22C (72F) and partly cloudy, Forecast is for the temperature to climb to 23C (74F), still with clouds and sun mixed. Wind from the north-northeast at 13 km/hr (8 mph). Nice day for a bicycle race.

Km 59, 129 km to go: The stage had a red-hot start. By km 14 there were fourteen riders off the front. Three were dropped making a break of eleven. Currently the eleven riders are 2min 37sec ahead of the field. Their names are coming.

Km 65, 124 km to go: Average speed for the first 1hr and 20min of racing has been a blistering 48.8 km/hr. This is a far different race than yesterday's leisurely stage.

Here are the name of the riders in the break: Alexey Lutsenko , Jay Robert Thomson, Peter Sagan, Paolo Longo Borghini, Jasper Stuyven, Damiano Cunego, Stef Clement, Luis León Sánchez, Danilo Wyss, Damien Gaudin and Vegard Breen.

Km 67, 122 to go: Orica-GreenEdge is pulling the peloton. The gap to the eleven escapees has stabilized and is currently 2min 47sec. A look below to the stage profile shows two third-category and one second-category climbs late in the stage. The final kilometers are lumpy and should make for interesting racing. The Vuelta posted these comments from the Paco Giner, the Vuelta's technical director:  "This is the second time we will have come to this place [the first time was in 1996 with victory for Biagio Conte]. It's a complicated end with a climb. Two kilometers with gradients ranging from 14 to 16% followed by a descent and a final uphill in the park. It's a difficult time to control and a proper place for a break."

Km 90, 98 km to go: Gap remains at 2min 45sec. None of the eleven riders in the break is a GC threat. Danilo Wyss is the best-placed and he's more than a half-hour down.

Km 103, 86 km to go: FDJ rider Murilo Fischer has abandoned. The break's gap is 2min 40sec. After 2hr 19min of racing, the stage's average speed has been 45.3 km/hr.

The results of the intermediate sprint at Espinosa de los Monteros: 1st Stef Clement, 2nd Paolo Longo Borghini, 3rd Damiano Cunego.

Km 110, 77 km to go: Gap remains at 2min 45sec. Lotto-Belisol rider Jurgen Van de Broeck has abandoned. The break has crested the third-category Alto Estacas de Trueba. The leaders over the pass: 1st Luis Leon Sanchez, 2nd Vegard Breen, 3rd Damiano Cunego.

Km 129, 60 km to go: The break is climbing the third-category Puerto de Braguia. The gap has grown to 2min 50sec, but Orica-GreenEdge has never allowed it to exceed three minutes.

Km 137, 52 km to go: Order over the top of the Braguia: 1st Luis leon Sanchez, 2nd Damiano Cunego, 3rd Stef Clement. Break's gap is down to 2 minutes.

Km 149, 40 km to go: On the second-category Alto de Caracol the break has fractured. Up front are five, Luis Leon Sanchez, Alexey Lutsenko, Damiano Cunego, Danilo Wyss and Damien Gaudin. Gaudin strgguled to stay with the other four. They are 2min 7sec ahead of the peloton. Two riders are between the lead break and the field.

32 km to go: The five leaders are 1min 52sec as the continue to descend the Caracol. Between the break and the peloton are Maxime Mederel and Luis Angel Mate, 1min 40sec behind the five leaders.

26 km to go: Tinkoff-Saxo has moved to the front of the peloton. Orica GreenEdge had asked Movistar to help with the chase and the Spanish team declined the opportunity. Orica decided not to burn all its matches and now the chase has slowed and the gap has grown out to 2min 13sec.

22 km to go: FDJ is helping with the chase. Given the difficult finish, this can't be for Bouhanni. Gap is back down to 2min 49sec.

18 km to go: A Tinkoff-Saxo rider keeps waving the TV motorcycle away, not wanting the motorcycle to pace the field. If the break is caught, Valverde's talents are well-suited for the stage finish, allowing Valverde to grab the bonus time. Hence Tinkoff-Saxo wants the break to succeed.

FDJ's efforts at the peloton's front are showing. The gap is down to 64 seconds.

14 km to go: Kenny Elissond (FDJ) has abandoned. Alexey Lutsenko has attacked the break, which looks doomed. The gap from the field to Lutsenko is just 37 seconds. The other four members of the break are not working well together. FDJ remains at the front of the pack.

9 km to go: Lutsenko (Astana) has 28 seconds. The other four have been caught by the pack.

7 km to go: Lutsenko is caught. It's all together. Orica-GreenEdge has three riders at the front with several Cannondale riders up there as well.

5 km to go: Tinkoff-Saxo is at the front, setting a hot pace to discourage attacks.

4 km to go: Here comes Katusha riding next to Toinkoff-Saxo. 67 km/hr.

2 km to go: The road has become steep. Bam! There goes Gianluca Brambilla. Daniel Navarro goes by him and looks like he's getting a big gap.

Dan Martin goes after him with Valverde and Contador on his wheel. Is that Froome chasing? They are brought back.

1 km to go: Navarro still has a gap

The Finish: Daniel Navarro (Cofidis) wins the stage with Daniel Moreno and Wilco Kelderman a couple of seconds back. Valverde is fourth at five seocnds, leading the group with Contador, Froome, Gesink and Uran.
