The Race: A big group of riders went clear early in the stage. Of the 31 who had escaped, the best-placed was Lampre-Merida rider Winner Anacona, who was down 2min 50sec. The big break rode with good cohesion and didn't start to fracture until the climbs late in the stage. At one point they had a gap of more than eight minutes.

Paris–Roubaix: The Inside Story

Anacona went clear from the break with Bob Jungels and Javier Moreno for company with about 22 kilometers to go. Meanwhile, the peloton was still more than six minutes back, making Anacona the virtual red jersey. Then it began to rain hard.

This stage had a hilltop finish at Aramón Valdelinares, and 6 kilometers from the summit Anacona left the other two behind and headed for the barn. He rode well on the hill and looked to be riding into the GC lead at the end of the stage.

But, the contenders in the peloton finally started getting itchy and started attacking each other. The attack that mattered was from Alberto Contador which came about 2 kilometers from the top. He took off in a huge gear and started eating up the distance between himself and Anacona. Katusha reacted and as Contador crossed the line, Joaquin Rodriguez and Nairo Quintana closed the gap.

The result, Quintana is the new GC leader, three seconds ahead of Contador. Anacona is in fourth place, nine seconds shy of the lead. This was another terrific day of racing at the Vuelta.

Stage 9 live updates:

Weather at Teruel (about mid-way through the stage) at 11AM local time. Instead of baking heat, we're probably going to have rain. It's 24C (75F), partly cloudy and forecast to climb to 28C (82F) with a 90% chance of rain. Wind is from the south-southeast at 8 km/hr (5 mph).

Km 25, 160 km to go: All 195 finishers of yesterday's stage signed in and started today. Today is a hilltop finish, so we'll see more changes to the GC.

There have been continual attacks and right now 27 riders are in front of a chase group of four with the peloton 1min 10sec behind the lead group.

Km 44, 141 km to go: The four chasers linked up with the big lead group, so we have 31 riders 4min 8sec ahead of the peloton.

Belkin rider Moreno Hofland has abandoned.

Km 59, 126 km to go: The 31 riders are now 5min 22sec ahead of the field. Cannondale, Tinkoff-Saxo and FDJ do not have riders in the break.

Km 74, 111 km to go: The 31 riders are 6min 22sec ahead of the pack. Best placed rider in the break is Winner Anacona (Lampre-Merida) in 21st place, down 2min 50sec. That would make Anacona the virtual leader.

Km 85, 100 km to go: Gap is up to 7min 18sec. Movistar is leading the peloton without panic. The race has been moving smartly down the road with an average speed after about two hours of 44 km/hr. Trek hit the jackpot with this break, they have three riders in the 31-man break: Fabio Felline, Bob Jungels and Julian Arredondo.

Km 98, 87 km to go: The results of the intermediate sprint at Teruel: 1st Yannick Martinez, 2nd Romain Zingle, 3rd Alexey Lutsenko. The 31 riders have an 8-minute lead. The break is approaching the first categorized ascent of the day, the third-category Puerto Cabigordo.

Here is a list of the 31 riders off the front: Carlos Verona, Rinaldo Nocentini, Tom Boonen, Adam Hansen, Romain Zingle, Sam Bewley, Fabio Felline, Johan Van Summeren, Winner Anacona, Bob Jungels, Ryder Hesjedal, Dominik Nerz, Yannick Martinez, Paul Martens, Peio Bilbao, Julian David Arredondo, Jay Robert Thomson, Javier Moreno, Danilo Wyss, Daniel Teklehaimanot, Damiano Cunego, Natnael Berhane, Pirmin Lang, Jerome Coppel, Alexey Lutsenko, Eduard Vorganov, Dario Cataldo, Nikias Arndt, Jérôme Cousin, Luis Mas Bonet and Maxime Bouet

Km 112, 73 km to go: Order of the KOM competition as the break went over the Puerto Cabigordo: 1st Jerome Cousin, 2nd Luis Mas Bonet 3rd Dario Cataldo. The break still has 7min 54sec. After three hours the average speed has been 43.2 km/hr.

Km 129, 56 km to go: And at the Cedrillas intermediate sprint: 1st Nikias Arndt, 2nd Jay Robert Thomson, 3rd Yannick Martinez.

37 km to go: Movistar is leading the peloton and has cut the lead down to seven minutes. Angry looking clouds hover over the riders. Johan van Summeren leads the break.

32 km to go: The road is rising and falling here. The two Garmin-Sharp riders, Van Summeren and Hesjedal, lead the break. Tom Boonen has been throwing in a few watts as well. Two Paris-Roubaix winners in the break, Boonen and Van Summeren. The gap is 6min 50sec. Movistar continues to lead the peloton.

25 km to go: Bam! Sam Bewley (Orica-GreenEdge) has attacked the break. He's got a nice gap. The pack is 6min 41sec back. Average speed so far is 43.2 km/hr. The stage may finish almost a half-hour ahead of projections. Bewley is on the second-category Alto de San Rafael.

23 km to go: It's raining hard now. Adam Hansen and Danilo Wyss have joined Bewley. Gap back to the peloton is 6min 30sec.

21 km to go: The Bewley group has been caught and virtual red jersey Winner Anacona is pounding away at the front of the break, aided by Bob Jungels. Sky is leading the peloton now. Fabio Aru had a problem and is chasing to get back to the peloton.

The break is fracturing on the climb.

20 km to go: Winner Anacona and Bob Jungels are off the front of the break with Movistar rider Javier Moreno as a passenger. As race leader Valverde's teammate, Moreno won't help Anacona. Pack is 6 minutes back.

14 km to go: Well, I was wrong. Moreno is helping the break, probably thinking stage win. The lead trio is 40 seconds ahead of the 27 members of the big break. The peloton is 5min 36sec back.

10 km to go: It's pouring rain, especially at the finish. The break is descending the Alto de San Rafael and will be starting the final climb soon.

9 km to go: Tony Martin is at the front of the pack and the gap has fallen below five minutes. Winner Anacona will have to finish 2min 50sec ahead of Valverde to take the red jersey.

7 km to go: The riders behind Martin are having real trouble staying with him as he sets a fierce pace. Teammate and GC contender Rigoberto Uran is on Martin's wheel. Martin has reduced the gap to 4min 25sec.

6 km to go: We're on the final climb to Aramón Valdelinares. Bam! Anacona tries to it alone. He's gone.

4 km to go: Sky leads the peloton. There was some hail, but it has stopped. Anacona has a lead of 3min 53sec. He can give up only one more minute and still take the lead. Looks like about 25 riders in the lead group of the peloton. The big GC riders are there.

Order over the San Rafael was: 1st Javier Moreno, 2nd Winner Anacona, 3rd Bob Jungels.

2 km to go: I see only one Tinkoff-Saxo rider in the peloton, Contador. Sky continues to pound at the front. The gap to Anacona is 3min 33sec. I forgot about the 10-second time bonus for winning the stage, so he can lose a little more time.

Bam! Dan Martin attacks the peloton. Joaquin Rodriguez goes after him with the pack in tow. Katusha gathers at the front of the peloton and puts a lot of pressure on the group.

1 km to go: Anacona has 3min 2sec. Bam! Contador attacks hard and has a real gap almost immediately.

Quintana responds. Valverde is cracking.

The finish: Winner Anacona wins the stage. Contador is pounding a big gear to the finish as he passes riders from the original break. Rodriguez and Quintana look to have caught Contador at the line.

Quintana is the new GC leader by 3 seconds over Contador.
