Alejandro Valverde

The Race: Yet another hot, brutal day in Spain. Today had this year's first hill top finish and it smoked out the GC men.

For much of the day Pim Ligthart and Luis Mas Bonet rode off the front, at one time having a lead of more than twelve minutes. Even towards the end of the stage it looked as if the pair would succeed. But today was too important to the teams with GC ambitions and one squad after another sent men to the front to help pull the pack.

The pair weren't captured until partway up the final ascent, the first category climb to La Zubia.

When the climb began to really bite Alejandro Valverde set a fiery pace as he led teammate Nairo Quintana. As expected, near the top Joaquin Rodriguez attacked, but he doesn't have the form to put the others to the sword. Then Chris Froome attacked and several others scrambled up to him, including a surprising Alberto Contador. Valverde swept by and drove hard up the hill. No one could come by. Valverde accomplished the double coup. He won the stage and takes over the GC lead.

Stage 6 live updates:

Weather at Granada (base of final climb), Spain at 1PM, local time: Hot! 33C (91F) with some clouds, clearing to full sun and climbing to 36C (97F) . Wind from the north at 5 km/hr (3mph). Really dry, humidity is 23% and will drop to 20%. Wind should shift to west-southwest at 8-16 km/hr (5-10 mph). No chance of rain.

Km 25, 142 km to go: Two of this year's Vuelta escape artists have broken away: Pim Ligthart (Lotto-Belisol) and Luis Mas Bonet (Caja Rural). Mas Bonet currently leads the mountains classification. Ligthart spent many kilometers yesterday off the front with Tony Martin or alone, on an ultimately unsuccessful solo break. The pair are 5min 47sec ahead of the field. A couple of times groups have tried to bridge up to the duo, but each time they have been caught by the peloton.

Km 35, 132 km to go: Ligthart and Mas Bonet are being allowed a lot of freedom. Their gap has ballooned to 9min 40sec. Average speed for the first hour of racing is 39.3 km/hr.

Km 50, 117 km to go: We're closing in on the first categorized ascent of the day, the second category Alto de Zafarraya. Garmin-Sharp has moved some riders to the front and the break's lead, which had grown to about fourteen minutes, is down to 13min 30sec

Km 65, 102 km to go: The ascent of the Alto de Zafarraya has begun. The lead duo's gap continues to fall, it's now 11min 50sec.

Km 77, 90 km to go: Ligthart and Mas Bonet have passed the summit of the Zafarraya and are 11 minutes ahead of the peloton.

Km 86, 81 km to go: The order of the top three over the Zafarraya: 1st Luis Mas Bonet, 2nd pim Ligthart, 3rd Jerome Cousin. Lightart and Mas Bonet are 9min 55sec ahead of the field. Garmin-Sharp and Katusha are working to chase the pair. No doubt the teams are thinking the hilltop finish suits Dan Martin and Joaquin Rodriguez.

62 km to go: Gap is 9min 34sec as the leaders ascend an uncategorized climb. Garmin has several riders at the front, followed by Movistar.

Km111, 56 km to go: The breakaway duo are approching the second categorized climb of the day, the third category Alto de los Bermejales. Gap is 8min 45sec. Lots of riders are going back to the team cars for bottles.

48 km to go: Garmin-Sharp still works the front of the peloton, getting some help from Katusha. Astana has several riders near the front. Lighthart and Mas Bonet are 7min 55sec up the road.

BMC and Movistar have just put some muscle at the front as well.

32 km to go: The order over the Alto de los Bermejales: 1st Luis Mas Bonet, 2nd Pim Lightart, 3rd Amets Turruka. The lead duo's gap has been cut to 6min 22sec.

21 km to go: Gap is down to 4min 31sec. The lead riders go through the intermediate sprint at Alhendan. Ligthart is first, then Mas Bonet. John Degenkolb was third. Gap is down to 4min 15sec.

17 km to go: The speed is going up and the peloton is stringing out. Now the gap is 3min 48sec. Orica-GreenEdge and Movistar are at the front of the pack.

13 km to go: The leaders are 2min 42sec up. Closing in on the final climb to La Zubia. Damiano Cunego had a puncture and was back on the road in a flash after a teammate gave him a wheel.

11 km to go: Ligthart and Mas Bonet are looking surprisingly good but they have only two minutes as the fast-moving pack close in on them. No, gap is 1min 44sec. Race leader Matthews is near the front. But his ownership of the red jersey is doomed.

7 km to go: Riders are moving up for the final ascent. Omega Pharma and Tnkoff-Saxo are up there. Gap is one minute.

6 km to go: Tinkoff-Saxo leads. Might be Michael Rogers. Peter Sagan is already dropped. Gap is down to 37 seconds. It's over for Ligthart and Mas Bonet.

4 km to go: The final climb has begun. Average grade is 7.8% with a maximum over 12%.

3 km to go: Le Mevel (Cofidis) has attacked the peloton. He's not getting a gap. Ligthart is still off the front, but only with a few seconds. It's all together. The pack is much smaller now. Lots of riders are getting shelled. Cadel Evans is in trouble.

2 km to go: Contador and Valverde are at the front. It's steep. Quintana looks good. Looks like Valverde is leading Quintana. Chris Froome is near the front as well. Dan Martin is in trouble now. Now Kelderman is dropped.

1 km to go: Valverde is setting the road on fire as he leads Quintana. Samuel Sanchez is gone. Looks like we're down to about 15 riders in the lead group.

The finish: Bam! there goes Rodriguez. Valverde Chases. Froome chases. Others scramble up to them

Chris Froome Goes. Valverde goes by to take the stage and the ten-second stage winner's time bonus.
